Newbie: started off great and going downhill fast!!
DroppingOneHundred posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hello all, this is my first post and I hope you all can shed some insight! I have read a few posts (on this site and google) about this topic and no real answer has come to be! I had my gastric bypass 4/4/17, and was doing great the first week! By my one week check up I was getting in 3 protein shakes a day, water in between, and a few spoonfuls of yogurt and apple sauce through out the day! I was proud of how good I was feeling. Happy with my decision. Got my staples out (those things are the devil) and was happy! Almost immediately the next day or so I started getting nauseous sipping my shake. Would set it down. Put back in fridge. Try to finish later. Same thing. Bubble a bite of yogurt. And vomit. I was so confused. Would sip some water... then same. Walked away from everything for hours and then try again and same results. Vomit. All day long. Those first couple of days that it started (right after my one week mark) I was very confused and still trying. Now, at 3.5 weeks out I am down to one protein shake very slowly sipped over 2-3 hours and barely 30-40 oz of water sipped through out the day. That's it. Zofran was called in for me last week and no change. I've tried food again (pudding, yogurt, apple sauce) and all come back up and if I drink my shake "fast" and by fast I mean over the course of ONE hour it also gives me the same gagging nauseous feeling. I feel so sick all day long! On the flip side, I'm perfectly fine with just water, herbal tea, even gaterade, but it's ANYTHING thicker that causes issues. i am a mom to FOUR kids. It feels exactly like the all day morning sickness I had with my two girls for nine months straight. I feel like I'm failing as a mother because I'm so energy depleted my patience wains fast. I love them dearly, and they are all younger than the age of six, so they have no clue what I'm going through. I keep telling them "mommy is sick" but they obviously don't know why. I can't live off just water and a sip or two of protein shake. Help! -
I'm eating soft solid food in my 3rd week. I didn't have to stay on a liquid diet. Your surgeon has given you the ok to move on to solid foods. He wouldn't tell you to eat them if it wasn't safe. Don't worry. Just make sure you chew and eat slowly. You should already feel full with less food.

Restriction time post recovery
liannatx replied to ElizabethO's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
My teacher friend and her husband had it done on the same day, and felt it worked out perfectly for them. They also went to Mexico and said it was convenient for them to do it one trip. They were able to be on the liquids at the same time, and were on the same food progression together. She said it was great that they were able to fix things they could both have... not have to watch the other eating a 'regular' meal. There is no way to predict how one will recover after this. I am a teacher also, and I went back to work after 7 days. I do believe there are lift/weight restriction for several weeks, so I am not sure how long your husband would need to take light duties in his work. Again, some of it will also depend on how fast he bounces back. -

When will I fit into smaller pants?
James Marusek replied to WendyinWI's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
One of the great things about bariatric surgery was how quickly I began to drop clothing sizes. I would buy a pair of pants one week that I could barely fit in. (I would take a deep breath and suck it all in to get the pants on.) The next week they would fit like a glove. It will happen to you. Be a little patient. But then marvel at how good it is making you feel. -
A little pain when introducing new food?

Most foods have not bothered me, but the first time I ate steamed cauliflower I was quite uncomfortable for about three hours. -
How will I know I'm advancing too quickly?
losergrl75 replied to TheRevisionedVagabond's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Depends, some feel nausea, some vomit, some people feel clammy or flush and some just feel pain. I tried grilled shrimp at about 8 weeks out and as soon as the first bite hit my sleeve, I knew it was all bad lol. It felt like a lead ball just sitting there, uncomfortably. When will I fit into smaller pants?
Baconville replied to WendyinWI's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
You will get there before you know it! Congrats on making the decision to have surgery. It has been the best decision I have ever made! If you are only two weeks out you still are probably experiencing quite a bit of abdominal swelling it normally takes 4 -6 weeks for that to completely resolve. Give it a month - by May 1st those jeans are going to be falling off! Carol -

Thecloude1 posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Looking for some food advice/ideas to help me reach my 600-800 calories I should be getting 11 weeks post op. On a good day I'm around 500 calories. I'm at the point where I can have 2-3oz of protein but I struggle even getting 1.5 oz . So far today I had my protein shake for breakfast. 116 calories....for lunch...1 oz grilled chicken, 1 oz fresh mozzarella and half a small banana for a total of 144 calories. Not sure what to eat! Any advice would be greatly appreciated [emoji3] -

How much are you eating or were eating Six weeks post op
jane13 replied to mariab3's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I followed my NUT and then saw my doctor 1 month post and he said to try to only eat 2 meals and if hungry in between eat veggies. I like his idea and I think he did it to help get the scale moving a bit better. I eat a Protein bar for breakfast, IF I am hungry, for breakfast. Small lunch and dinner. It works for me during the week. on the weekends I have a small breakfast ( couple of scrambled eggs) and a small dinner. I may eat a "snack" mid-day. I missed my veggies because of the protein first, veggies and then carb for meals the NUT said to follow. -
I started massage therapy school 5 weeks ago and I'm lovin' it! Except for anatomy! Any secrets or tips for getting through this class? I have Anatomy and Physiology I, II, and III through next April and I think I'm going to die! We have our first anatomy exam tonight and I'm a nervous wreck. At my age (49) I don't seem to retain the information as well as I did when I was younger. But, my practicals and labs are going very well. I'm retaining everything that I put my hands on, so to speak. I have the flash cards and coloring books and they help but this subject matter is just so complex. Anyone else share my pain?

My second fill, I felt wide open until 2 weeks after. My first bite of dinner came back up in a PB because I was not expecting the restriction.

Anyone mess up on puree diet and not die?
james2021 posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
OK, I know I should not have done this, and I'm not going to do it again. I had a small amount of grits that were restaurant-prepared yesterday morning. They had corn in them, which I was conscious of, but I was thinking that if I chewed it really really well, it would be okay. In the two or three bites of this that I had, I maybe had like.... 6 kernels of corn? I've kept everything down since surgery and I haven't had any issues with it since, and now I'm 24 hours out. But, re: having anxiety, now I'm worried I'm going to get a bowel obstruction from this and die. SO... did anyone else do anything they weren't supposed to do in the puree stage and end up fine? -
Restriction time post recovery
ElizabethO replied to ElizabethO's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Thank you for your replies. We'd really like to have it together at the same time for travel purposes and support. I'm just really trying to talk him into being able to be "light duty" for 2-3 weeks if needed. But I don't want him to hurt himself either. -
Restriction time post recovery

I think it's possible that you would both be able to go back to work according to your plan, but I think your plan is pretty ambitious. If you go forward with it, I would say have a back-up plan for what you are going to do if it doesn't work out the way you envision. I was not ready to go back to work for two weeks, and I have a desk job. I was just too tired. And I had what most people would consider an easy recovery: no complications, able to get all my fluids and protein in from day one, up and walking 2 hours after surgery. It isn't so much the fear of hurting yourself after surgery as it is just not having the strength or energy to get through a day doing the sorts of things you describe. It might also be hard to keep sipping liquids throughout the day while working on things like putting a fence up and getting fields ready for planting. It might even be hard for you to go back to work as a teacher with just a week off (I couldn't have -- but you are probably younger and perhaps starting at a lighter weight than I did). I am not meaning to discourage you, I just do want you to think of back-up plans for what happens if you and/or your husband end up needing more than a week off and/or a couple of weeks of light duty. -
Hey y'all! My husband and I are having the surgery sometime this year in Mexico with Dr. A! I'm so excited and anxious. However we cannot decide on a time that works for us both. I want the surgery ASAP in April while I'm on spring break. (I'm a teacher) My husband is self employed and runs his own machine shop and farms part time. In April he worries it will be too busy of a time of year for him. He will be needing to put up a new fence to get his hay field ready and that usually is a busy time at the shop for him. He wants to wait until July. This upsets me to no end. I'm so ready to start this new journey and start living again! He can take the week off of surgery and can be restrictive with his heavy lifting for 3 weeks or so but my question is for people who have fairly physical jobs, how long before you were back to work and felt comfortable completing your normal task without fear of hurting yourself?
