Failing w the Sleeve
New&Improved replied to Cryoskin Sonora's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
1000s of people have had the bypass over many years with no issues -
I learned about these complications from a noted surgeon at Massachusetts General Hospital noted as the World's Best Hospital in the New England Journal of Medicine. I was told that all hospitals are "cutting back on the bypass" as much as they can because of these types of complications which are not SO rare. I never would post anything like this if I weren't certain I could trust the source

Question about weight loss related to body shape
perfektlynrml posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hello. I had my final appointment with my surgeon and we decided on August for gastric bypass. I wanted to run this by the ladies out there. I am extremely wide on the bottom. What happened when you started to lose weight? Did it come off evenly? Did you lose all the weight on the top first? Any suggestions about how to encourage even weight loss? Thanks. -
that's actually really rare. I'm surprised she's had two patients like that. there also aren't that many more complications with bypasses than there are with the sleeve. The sleeve is more popular now because they're easier for surgeons to do, and patients are more afraid of getting the bypass - they think it's more invasive (although to be honest, I find the sleeve just as "invasive"...)

Dear heaven: Your body shut down and you couldn't go to the bathroom for over a year?? ..... and you are considering surgery again? I had a sleeve done on February 26 and have only lost 22 lbs with strict dieting. I asked my surgeon if she would do a full bypass for me. Her answer was an emphatic NO. She told me that they are doing fewer and fewer full bypasses because of too many complications. She had two patients who are receiving nutrition from a feeding tube. Imagine, they ate compulsively and gained a ton of weight and now cannot eat at all. It seems to me that your body shutting down for over a year would be impetus enough to never have elective surgery again. Just sayin' -Grace

CIGNA requirements HELP
CapeFearNC replied to Heather120617's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I have Cigna through my employer and it all depends on how the policy is written regarding Bariatric surgery. My policy shows one thing when you look it up online but when anything is submitted it gives not covered by policy. Putting my medical billing & coding to work i did little digging and found that it actually was in the underwriting of the policy that it excludes weight loss surgery. Yes i have been under my PCP care for health issues related to my weight along with weight management (meds/diet/etc) my surgery is also a medical necessity as i have OSA, NAFLD, & PCOS. Even after both my PCP & OBGYN gave the "medical necessity" insurance still will not cover any form of bypass surgery and has left me to figure it out on my own. After lots of medical practice locations/surgeon research, i decided to proceed with having a Vertical Sleeve which will be done by one of the surgeons at Blossom Bariatrics (fast track program). They will utilize my insurance for all the Pretesting labs, stress test, upper Endoscopy but i have to cover the surgery procedure part out of pocket. Between my husband and i we were able to obtain a medical loan to assist in the remaining amount we needed and my surgery date was scheduled for week of Sept 7th so my countdown is on!!!!! -
23 Days Post Op-Only 9lb Lost
over65 replied to KASx4's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
The problem with fiber is it swells up and fills small stomach/pouch. Interferes with nutrient absorption. Bypass patients have very short section of small intestines for absorbing nutrients. So fiber will encase food making it hard to absorb. Sent from my SM-T580 using BariatricPal mobile app -
Revision from sleeve to RNY
Tracyringo replied to CandyMel's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
If you are doing this for weight loss it will be harder as far as I am concerned. You also may not have the same kind of restriction that you are use to with the sleeve. I will be 2 months out revision to bypass due to GERD on the 22nd. I lost 12lbs the first month and have not lost anymore weight. I can eat more then I could with the sleeve and have no issues with food other then dumping but I stay away from those things since I know what they are. Good luck. -
HELP diagnose pain? Bypassers, what's going on?
MaybeMeow replied to MaybeMeow's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
This does make me feel better. Thank you. I was pretty nauseous after my bypass and remained in the hospital for 2 days due to it. Even got a little delirious after so many hours riddled with nausea. Really hoping not to relive that. -
What should my daily protein goal be?
Pandemonium replied to Happyfamilyof5's topic in Protein, Vitamins, and Supplements
The program I'm in says 1 gram of protein per kilogram of body weight, which seems kind of on the high side to me, but it worked out well for me pre-op. 9 years ago, the program I was in for my lap band had a goal of 60g of protein, so there was a little bit of whiplash on my expectations when I went pre-op for revision to VSG back in February. I'm 9 days post-op and right now I've been getting 89g of protein a day from the liquid diet I'm on. -
Revision from sleeve to RNY

Did you have success after revision? From my understanding, having the revision is not as effective as the first surgery that was done. Did you experience this? -
Anyone use Dr. Fitzer at Virginia Bariatric?
JRT Mom replied to obxshell89's topic in Weight Loss Surgeons & Hospitals
I had my band-bypass conversion by Dr Fitzer almost 8 months ago. I stayed two nights, but I had not just the conversion but also a hernia repair. If I lived locally I might have been able to go home after one night, but since I had a 5 hour train ride they approved staying an extra night. Now there is a new bariatric surgeon in a city only 30 minutes from where I live. But I was happy with Dr Fitzer and especially his whole staff. A good surgeon is of course important, but how the rest of his staff works is also very important since you only see the doctor that one time but all the follow up is by the office so they have to have their act together! -
I need a little help from others that have been approved with CIGNA. THIS Is the most up to date policy (see below). They actually update their policy on the 15th of July so it was revised and updated today. No changes were really made. Anyways, I do meet the requirements but my question is regarding Cigna coverage. Most plans require a monitored 3, 6 or 12 month diet/nutrition/weight loss management through PCP or somewhere similar. Cigna's policy says NOTHING about this, only that "a statement from a physician other than the surgeon, that the individual has failed previous attempts to achieve and maintain weight loss by medical management" - it gives no other requirements or indicators. I called Cigna and two different reps confirmed that it is not required. Although when I went to my Drs appointment they told me they thought it was six months worth of supervised diet! I think they are confused bc of the “within the last six months” part. SIGH! They said they will look into it more So, for those of you that have been approved in the past few months, do I have to have a letter from my primary that recommends bariatric surgery? Would this be the same letter or separate from the on where they state I have made several attempts and failed? And what did you submit/have your PCP write to say that you had failed previous attempts? Thanks in advance for your help! Sorry I just know Insurance’s are so picky! below is link to coverage https://static.cigna.com/assets/chcp/pdf/coveragePolicies/medical/mm_0051_coveragepositioncriteria_bariatric_surgery.pdf

HELP diagnose pain? Bypassers, what's going on?
WishMeSmaller replied to MaybeMeow's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Please contact your surgeon, @MaybeMeow. He can order tests if he thinks they are needed, and will not order them if he has an explanation for your symptoms. It is a win for you either way. I am sure your husband does not order unnecessary tests for his patients and your surgeon won’t either. You trusted your surgeon to do your bypass, so it is time to trust him again with your concerns. Please keep us posted. -
HELP diagnose pain? Bypassers, what's going on?
MaybeMeow posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I've had unexplained pain for over 48 hours. I am 5 weeks post Bypass. I am not constipated. I have had a bowel movement every day for the last 5 days (rocks, but I go). I can eat very small amounts of solid food (like 1 oz moist chicken or ground beef) and while it does usually feel stuck up high and makes me uncomfortable for an hour or so, my body processes it. I can also drink water and protein drinks. I do not have a fever. BUT the pain is center upper stomach. It's always there and it ranges from moderate to extreme. It almost feels like a mix of gas and a sore burning muscle. It's constant but hurts more when I move. In a car the bumps in the road increase it. It hurts in my upper stomach when I take a deep breath. Like my diaphram is hitting whatever is causing the pain. And oddly... I feel air movement. Like maybe a bubble is popping and I would expect to pass gas but it doesn't happen. And that happens a lot. Like an air leak. WHAT IS GOING ON? To go to my surgeon's office and ask for tests seems overkill since I'm not throwing up, no fever and I'm able to take nourishment. But I've been slightly slumped over walking holding my upper stomach for two days and my husband (a physician) thinks I need to go in and be checked out. He asked out the blue "can your detached stomach fill with gas?? I didn't know the answer. Why not? And if it can does the Gas X get there? Any thoughts? -
No you're not, not one little bit. You love that you've been super successful and now you've forgotten what it was like the hundreds of times you tried to lose weight and failed pre WLS. You forget too easily that you had to have an entire organ bypassed from your digestive tract to get you where you are today. Don't forget, have compassion and empathy.

Myotomy and sleeve to bypass revision due to GERD
Foxbins replied to Foxbins's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
Because I was at goal and having the revision because of intractable GERD, the dietary instructions for RNY really don't apply to me. The texture progression does, liquid to pureed to soft to regular food, but the caloric advice doesn't. So I scouted around on the web. Gastrectomy and intestinal rerouting has been done a long time for GI cancers. There is a surgery called a Billroth II that is almost the same as RNY so I have been following dietary guidelines for them--whole milk and full fat yogurt, mashed potatoes with small amounts of butter, basically avoiding low-fat and low-sugar options without taking in so much fat and sugar that I might dump. We'll see how it works, I only weigh myself once a week and there are a few more days to go. Last night I woke up at 2 am and had to pee. When I got back in bed, my abdomen, inside and out, ached and throbbed. I have no idea what happened, maybe I twisted getting out of bed. I tried to deep breathe enough to relax and go back to sleep but couldn't. I ended up taking half an oxycodone (2.5 mg). Tylenol probably would have worked but it was in the bathroom and the oxycodone was in the drawer of the nightstand. First painkiller of any kind I've taken since July 5. -
I had bypass surgery 9 days ago and already down 16 lbs!!!! I'm so glad I did this. Was this just a lucky week for me or can I expect to lose this much weight each week for the first couple of months? Sent from my LM-V405 using BariatricPal mobile app

July 2020 Surgery anyone?
maxtomin replied to IWantTheDream's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Underwent RNY Gastric Bypass yesterday at 1PM. Woke up with 6 lap sites (I thought it would be 4-5 wondering who else can post their amount). Was in a lot of pain in recovery where they gave me 0.5mg Dilaudid once and then a 5mg Oxycodone when I arrived to my room and was still in a little discomfort. Even with scheduled Tylenol and Gabapentin the pain, although tolerable, does keep me up from sleep. Been eating ice chips and had 3 sugar free popsicles. Up and walking like a champ through the hallways as I’m bored and am unable to have visitors at this time. I guess my question to anyone reading this is: is my experience Expected and typical? -
Hello. I understand the people getting lap band need a port to adjust the band. But I feel like I’m reading about people getting bypass who end up with drainage ports. Why is this? Is it common?

keep us posted i would love to hear about your time at Blossom! how you do on the two week preop meals plan (i refuse to use the word diet) going & meeting everyone, pretesting, surgery day, Your return flight and traveling home. Of course when you feel up to updating! We have about the same travel times on the way back, we leave Vegas at 9:30am arrive back to NC at 7:15pm then also have little over 2 hour ride home. I am buying a special seat belt pillow to use on the plane along in the car then also buying the after surgery pal for gastric bypass, its technically a "plush toy" but would be the perfect size to travel with on the way home. keep in touch hope your procedure goes well, look forward to hearing all about it!
