Well Luu, Part of the wonder of the band is that it helps us keep it off. We still have to eat healthy and take in fewer calories but we do it without being hungry. I think it's normal to have 2nd thoughts. It's hard to know you won't be able to eat to cover feelings anymore. It's like loosing a good friend. But think out it as a friend who is overstaying her welcome and spoiling your life. You will be able to keep your friend but in moderation.

well spoken. i use the term starvation mode, but i use the term loosely.. ive known that my body shuts down with weight loss very easily. ive never been at that point where i would say i was literally starving, its just that my body kicks into survival mode, whatever you like to call that. i dont lose weight at all when i drop my calorie intake below 1200... i try to move my intake around a lot from day to day. it varies from about 1000 to perhaps 1400-1500 the next day... that does work for me. however, i know that my metabolism is very slow and very efficient. i had so many goes on the Atkins diet that im sure i did something to my metabolism then.

On day 1. What are some tips you have to stay motivated?
Mdnytangel replied to K8ecakes's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Absolutely...stalls & patience. However, I look at stalls now as a way for my body to catch up to the weight loss~ I find it’s important to think about what our bodies are going through~ I already have some excess skin, however, I find that it’s not quite as bad after a stall. (Or maybe that’s just hope lol) Try not to focus on the scale, do NOT weigh yourself everyday, or several times a day! Stay focused on your path and new lifestyle, and improvements- keep moving forward! Don’t forget to do your measurements, as well! Often, the scale won’t be moving, however, inches will!!! (Woot woot!!!) My daughter keeps showing me pictures from last year, or sometime in the past to help me keep things in perspective....because I KNOW how much I have lost, etc., however, I still see myself as before- it’s difficult to let reality set in, I guess! I think we all agree that this place helps as well..no matter what you’re going through, whether it’s tailbone pain rubbing on your butt skin, the reactions of others, etc...you are NOT alone! Most of all...enjoy the process and the new you!!! ~xo~ Oh, and being able to sit at a booth or normal sized chair with arms on it without worrying about what I like to call “suck & tuck”, PRICELESS!!! Or, worry about if the chair will cling to you as you get up, making the dreaded scraping noise, while everyone turns to look at you. Keep going...and LIVE!!! -
Should I Do It????
shouldidoit replied to shouldidoit's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Thank you all for your quick response.Your support is overwhelming and much appreciated. This is not a decision I am just pondering. I have thought about it for 2 or more years and have done all the research.2 years ago when I went to the weightloss clinic it was in my mind my final attempt to loose weight before surgery. Surgery seems so permanent. I have thought about this for so long. Most of my friends do not face the weight loss battle. I needed reassuance that my feelings are normal. You all have given me that. I am now in the process of finding someone to accept my insurance.Another battle I am afraid. How long does it take form the time you find a doctor have a consultation and then have surgery??I suppose that varies form doctor to Doctor but maybe you al can g ive me a ball park figure. -
First off, you are absolutely not a failure. Being overweight is just one part of your life. You should never measure your self worth by your weight. For one thing, you're a mother, the most important job in the world. You sound like a very thoughtful and loving woman, and I'm sure you're children are being raised in a wonderful home. Look at your life, and don't get stuck on diet failures as a measure of your worth. Secondly, you've had some very successful weight loss victories, but there's just something out of whack when you can lose weight, but not keep it off. I have friends who eat like there's no tomorrow, and they don't gain an ounce. I blame my ancestors. They were rugged pioneers who worked hard, and I'm sure needed a slow metabolism to stay healthy during lean times. Unfortunately, for me, life is just too darn easy. :tt2: I was used medically prescribed diet pills for weight loss, and they worked great for a short period of time. My body adjusted, and soon, the affect wore off. They really are a short term solution. I've only been banded for two weeks, and I've lost 20% of the weight I want to lose to be healthy again. Part of that was during my two week pre-op diet. I still have good restriction from being so recently banded, but I can tell you that I've never had this feeling of satiety with so little food. Once I start feeling hungry, I'll be able to get fills that will keep me in this zone. The band isn't magic though. Food cravings can still hit you, you have to make good healthy food choices, and there are changes you'll have to make when you have a lap band. For me, those small sacrifices are worth it. I already feel so much better. My clothes are loose, rather than skin tight. I feel victorious, because I know I'm going to win this battle once and for all. Good luck with whatever you decide to do. But know, that there is help for you, and you're not alone in this.

Food "intolerances' at what stage did they start
suepro replied to elcee's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
I found that with each fill as I progressively got more restriction, more foods wouldn't go down easily and I haven't always had the inclination to try something again if it caused me discomfort when eating it. I suspect that some of the foods I keep away from would go down on some days but not on others but I have a nice wide range of healthy foods that go down easily with no discomfort so tend to stick to them. My main forbidden foods are bread, Pasta, tomatoes unless skinned and celery. Some foods can be tolerated if eaten in a certain way, for example Grapes have to be peeeled, apples have to be peeled and chopped, carrots have to either be cooked or grated. -
Hello Everyone!! I was informed 2 was ago that I was approved for Stage 2 for the BariatricPal program through Molina. I have a BMI of 39.5 weigh 224, 5’3” and possibly have Sleep apnea. My problem is I’ve tried weight loss on my own, I’ve diet, killed my self at the gym and just couldn’t loose weight. I have started my PT classes and Mental Health but still waiting on my Nutrition classes. Does anyone know if we can get approved for the surgery without having to complete all the classes. I just recently found out I might have to move to California in mid year and it bums me out because I don’t believe I can complete all these classes by then, then they told me I’d have to start all over again there. Is there anyone out there that can help me with loops and advice? Thank you!

Anyone else's boobs GROW as their bodies are shrinking????? I've been a C cup basically since I got them, only having them grow when I was pregnant.... I went bra shopping today and I had them measure me, and I went up a cup size. How is that possible?? Could it be the excess skin from losing that could cause that, b/c they feel smaller then they did pre-op but 2 professionals told me otherwise... Anyone else have this issue??:smile2:

Hello I have struggled with weight my entire life. It seems like every year I creep up and up. I'm about 5 ft. 7inches and about 220 lbs. My size 20/22 jeans have recently started getting tight and those were my jeans that were always going to be my 'loose' genes. I am very knowledgeable about nutrition/exercise and I try over and over to take the weight off but it always comes back and worse. It makes me feel terrible about myself on a daily/hourly basis. I know that my weight is just at the cut off for the surgery and I wonder about any of your thoughts of having the surgery if you are right at the cut off for bmi? I am guessing that I am at about a bmi of 34 Thank you for your thoughs Sarah

Will I still be able to get rough and wild?
Leena replied to Leather's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
You can be even rougher than before, trust me, after loosing my first 100 pounds I can now take on all 3 of my sons in a wrestling match and win by power, not because of mere weight (sitting on them, LOL). Yes I'm still a tom-boy at my age. In the beginning you are going to have to watch your port area. But last week one of my sons hit it and I could really feel it. It doesn't hurt too much, just feels really wierd. And it takes a while for the general soreness to go away post-op. In the next few months I'm starting Tang Soo Do and should be fine. I'm not looking forward to being kicked in the port though. -
Post-op checkup went well. I walked in and they weight me right away... from 281 day of surgery to 271 today (Dec3 - Dec11). So it looks like I lost some weight.... So they also measured everywhere and asked a bunch of question and told me I dont need my bandage anymore. So the Nurse told me that I can gradually move on towards the mushy stage for about 3week. Doctor told me that I'm doing ok and look like my first fill will be in 6weeks . So they told me to come back in 6 weeks and also do some blood works before appointment day. I knew my first fill wont be for like 4 weeks but.... 6 week? I hope I dont gain anything and keep loosing weight. I think once my wounds heal more then I can start walking extra and xmas coming up... which means vaction time, I should hit the gym with all that extra time.

I just got back from my checkup too - and also lost 10 lbs since surgery (December 3). Wahoo! He said he likes his patients to loose 15 lbs in the first month . . . so I'm in OK shape (well not physically lol). I have an appointment for January 2 for my first fill. He said he is pretty agressive . . . and we will see what happens then. He said I can do anything as long as I still feel good . . . don't overdue it. And I knew my incisions were glued shut . . .but he said "yup . . .it's a high grade super glue that is bendable and flexible" . . . amazing! Chris

Really hard time adjusting to life with the band?
kiz replied to dietpeach's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
"Does the lack of hunger help?" In a word, YES! It's amazing how beating that demon, hunger, wards off cravings and over-eating. This is going to be a healthy way of life for me, not a quick fix diet. I finally see a light at the end of the tunnel, and I'm not going to set myself up for failure, by trying to be a super dieter. I'm eating healthy foods, but I will allow myself treats now and then. There are foods that I'll never have in the same way again, for instance, a large diet Coke, but I know, in the future, I can have a sip now and then. Right now, I don't want it or miss it. I stopped drinking diet sodas a month prior to surgery, and I think that helped a lot. I would put in my time on my elliptical prior to surgery, but it was a chore. I knew the weight wasn't coming off. Now, I can't wait to get on it. I'm also walking 3 miles in the evening, and because I've already lost around 20lbs, it's a breeze. I'm walking it ten minutes faster than I was previous to surgery, and I'm just getting started after taking time off to recover. As far as bread, I already ate whole wheat bread. Since banding, I'll have a slice of LF whole wheat toast with my tuna occasionally. I know I'll miss having a nice hamburger with a big bun or an Italian sub, but I'm confident that I'll find replacements that I'll enjoy just as much. Heck, right now, having my clothes loose, rather than "pop the button" tight, I'm not craving any of those foods. My husband and I were out for dinner, and rolls were served. I ate a small section of a roll in small teeny pieces w/ butter, and it was very filling. I wouldn't do that on a nightly basis, or even weekly, but as long as I'm able to eat it w/o getting stuck, I'm fully satisfied with it. -
I got some honeycrisps at the grocery store yesterday and tried them this morning. Amazing! I peeled the skin, cut them up in chunks, sprinkled a bit of water, some cinnamon and some truvia and put them in the microwave for about 45 seconds. They are AMAZING! Thanks for the ideas y'all!

Hi! My name is Tabitha...I'm 17 years old, 5'5" and 275lbs and my BMI is 45 and I'm am hoping to be banded. I've been overweight all my life and I want to get it taken care of now because being a teen and being big like me is really not easy...Mentally and physically..All of my friends are thin and active but me? I can't even walk up a flight of stairs without ending up out of breath. I'm tired of the back and knee pain...I've tried diets and I've been going to the gym for months but it's like my body refuses to loose weight. I'll loose a few pounds and turn around and gain back 2x what I lost and I don't want it to be this way anymore....I'm registered for a seminar on May 2nd and I was just wondering what all I should take to the seminar with me. I don't have an ID so if they want that is there anything else I can take to replace it? Thanks for reading,(:

I was banded on Nov 12th and am scheduled for my first fill on the 2nd of January. I had been thinking that I would tell my doctor that I didn't want the fill, because I really haven't been hungry and have not had any problems sticking to the diet. I've been loosing fairly well, so I figured I wouldn't mess with success. That was before Xmas dinner. Whoops! I had about 1900 calories yesterday - with probably 1300 coming between 7:30 and 8:30 pm. Wow, I had prime rib, mashed potatoes, sweet potatoes, and salad. Not as much as other people, mind you, but it still blew my 900 to 1000-calorie daily average right out the window. As a one-time slip, I am not too worried; but, since I didn't feel any restriction at all during the whole episode of piggery, I started worrying for the future. So, I think I am going to get that fill on January 2. Even if my Xmas dinner was a isolated incident, it will probably be good to know that I have some sort of internal "limit". Until now, I figured I did and just hadn't ever tested it. Now that my devious mind knows I don't, I am sure it will be whispering in my ear "just eat a few more bites." Better safe than sorry, I guess.

Anyone have a slipped band and just live with it?
faithinjesus posted a topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
I would like to know if anyone has been told they have a slipped band and that it needs to be re-possitioned, and decided not to have it repositioned and just kept the band empty and still had success in loosing weight. I was a cash pay patient and don't know if my insurance is going to want to pay for the band to be repossitioned. The doctors office is having to send a letter to the insurance company stating that it is medically necessary. I won't know for 7-14 days whether they will pay or not. I got to thinking and wondered if anyone has had success with no fills. Thanks! -
I guess that is what happens when you want the best...
Jachut replied to Paulax's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
Oh, that wait would kiiiiiiillllll me, lol. But - like you say, that's what you get when you want the best. Think about it like this, that last 3 pounds will go, some more could even go in that time, you have some time perhaps to do a bit of a fitness blitz, get those abdominals in superb shape, really do everything you can to maximise the result AND your skin will have had some chance to snap back to what extent its going to. -
Getting a realize band in Oct- a couple of questions
JillW replied to tomatogirl's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
Thank you for sharing that information. I am tired of feeling I have to defend myself for the choice I made of Realize vs Lapband. I guess my question is why are people who have the Lapband care and why do they continue to getting in these forms and debating the choice we made for ourselves. I am sorry but I keep seeing one person responding to the Realize band in negative tone and unless you have it how can you comment. I am VERY pleased with my Realize Band. Many are discouraged on the amount of weight they have lost but keep in mind with either band the weight loss will (or can) be slow but steady. I choose the band over RNY because I didn't want it to come off so quick that my skin would not have time to respond to what the heck was going on. As my Dr. said to me one day . . . "you banders want the band because if comes off slower but when you don't a 10 - 15lb loss a month you get upset and complain". He is correct we just have to hang in there for the long haul. Be postive and think of where you would be if you hadn't made the discussion to get band at all. This is a journey on a short road trip. Thank you for letting me vent!!!! -
Hi! I was banded on 8/13. I am constantly amazed when I read about how quickly some people are allowed to progress through food stages. My bariatric center wants us to go two full weeks at each stage. I am getting to week 6 now, which means I will be ready for "unrestricted" textures, including, at long last, raw veggies, fruits and veggies with skin, and nuts. I'm not in such a hurry to have them, but it is nice to reach this stage. I'm pretty contented with the soft food stage as I can eat almost everything I want anyway. But a good salad - oh yum! I've been craving it for weeks now. I have to say I cannot say thank you enough to everyone who posts and replies here. I was beginning to worry early last week as my weight went up another pound. Then someone reminded me (duh me) that I haven't had a fill, and with each new food stage I'm likely taking in more calories again. I am due to see the Dr. on 10/2 and find out how much he wants to do for my first fill. Because of thinning in my abdominal wall from previous abdominal surgeries I've had, he's sending me to a radiologist to have my first fill done under the fluoroscope. I can feel the outline of my port, but have NO problem with this. It may even mean less time for me to wait for a fill - the average is about 1 1/2 hour right now if you go to the office. My point is, right now my pouch is unrestricted, and I'm clearly healing well. I can eat MUCH more quantity of food than I thought in a meal. Still less than before I was banded, but much more than the nurses led me to believe. So I was getting concerned about it. Now I feel much more relaxed and am lightening up on myself. I did feel, for the first time, the sensation of food getting stuck yesterday. I think I took too big a bite & didn't chew it small enough before swallowing. I didn't bring any back up, but there was a minute there when I was quite uncomfortable. Lesson learned! One reason (in my top 10) for choosing banding was because of the low purge incidence. I am not a purger. So PB's are not something I want to experience - EVER. Compliant little brown-noser, that's me! LOL. Thanks to all. I really appreciate your willingness to share your experiences and support one another. It makes me feel quite pleased that I chose this route to help me lose weight.

Well, its been over a month since I did a blog.. I have gotten behind.. Oops.. Well, a lot has occured in my life the last month.. I was given a clear bill of health from the neurologist.. Everything was normal.. However during this scare I did have to get an attitude with the Doctor's office for not communicating with me as a patients.. I was being left in the dark about everything.. I am glad thats over with.. Well, this month I had to learn that my husband cheated on me with some stank.. I found this out on Mother's day weekend not to mention that my in laws were there.. excuse the expression.. We have been married 11 years this month.. I am still uncertain what I need to do about this. I am still in the grief process. I think that the biggest problem about all of this I don't know if I will ever going to be able to trust him again.. All of the stuff I had to deal with this made me fail my first college class since being in college. I am pissed about that.. Now, I had to retake the class not to mention I have to pay for it again. Well, I have had some interesting issues occur during my last post. I can not eat roast, pork, and apple skins.. I know that this is still a learn experience but you would think that I would know things by now.. It gets really upsetting when have these episodes..

watching what I Eating less and Exercising...but still NOT able to lose much weight!
AlisonL replied to vkcse03's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
Don't get discouraged! My doctor said I should hope to loose 6 - 10 pounds a month. When your eating making sure you eat very slow, this allows your mind and stomach to relaize that it is not hungry. The hardest thing for me was to learn that i didn't have to feel full, just not hungry...there is a big difference. Once you get an adjustment you will also drop weight quicker...Set small goals for yourself. I started at 282 I was looking so forward to less than 2 1/2 (250). Once I hit that I started thinking how exciting the 10 pound increments were. It will come off, don't get discouraged! -
Hi Tracy, I am 26,5'5 and was 235 before banding. I have been banded since Aug. I have lost 20lbs. I had a similar sweet tooth. I did notice that once I was banded it wasn't as bad. About a month after surgery I was at the grocery store with hubby and he wanted some ice cream and he asked me what flavor I wanted, well after spending about 10 mins in the ice cream isle I didn't see any flavor that tickled my fancy and he just got a pint of what he wanted. I can't garuntee that your cravings will stop but I do know that for some people their tastes kinda change. I chose the band personally because I have a little one less than a year old and could not afford that much down time. Also I am not done having children and I wanted to have a way to re loose the pregnancy weight. I knew if I got bypass I would most likely be skinny up until I got pregnany then gain alot of weight back. With the band, I can get a fill after pregnancy and start all over again. Not true with bypass. To tell you the truth, I had no recovery time. I was back to normal activity the day after I got back from surgery. I think you would probably only need a week of recovery if that much. I am 100% happy with my band. Only you can make the choice for you. With the band I can still enjoy the things I like to eat, but most of the time 2-3 bites of it satisfies my craving and I am done with it. I know with bypass you have to be careful what you eat and change your eating habits completely other wise your body will start dumping, which doesn't sound fun to me. Only YOU can choose what you think is best for you, do your research though and go into it knowledgable and 100% sure that you have made the right decision. I would encourage you to explore all the threads on this board and maybe find a bypass forum and explore their threads too. Good luck!

I Knew This Would Happen Eventually But...
Jachut replied to Jenn1214's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
Mine looked truly freaky, and at a BMI of 20, I dint have to lay down, it stuck out when I was standing up too. It looked like a walnut under my skin. I had a tummy tuck and ventral/inguinal hernia repair ten weeks ago during which my PS moved my port to right by my navel and took the back off it to reduce the profile (there's no low profile port for my 7 year old 4cc band). Its now virtually invisible, even at my low weight. Its very flat, but he also put it right by my navel where you have a natural fat pad, not up and to the side in that hollow we all have outside of our rectus muscles. I was lucky to have this without getting a new scar (well, I got a tummy tuck scar, but you know what I mean). But I would say a scar is well worth the better look of no lumpy port. -
Congrats Melanie! You are doing an amazing job!! Just think of how far you've come in less than 6 months!! And don't worry about the loose skin...just focus on how great are doing and how good you look!! Keep it up, girl!!:tt2:
