Severe slime choking me constantly and acid in lungs at night
Kate207 replied to Kate207's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Thank you for this. This really makes sense! My consultant explained a few days ago that it was the lower part of my stomach that was removed although thats all he said. They never really go into much detail. I'll ask about the pyloric valve as I think you're right on this. Regarding the twisting this also fits. I never suffered from this slime or reflux until approx 3 weeks after surgery. I stupidly chugged back approx 750ml of a litre bottle of milkshake quite fast and instantly felt sick. I had extreme pain in my stomach so I went and lay down. As I did I had this strange muscle spasm in my stomach followed by a weird flopping sensation inside. Exactly as if my stomach had moved position. Thats the only way I can describe it. I was going to go to A and E but held off. The pain eased. The sickness went away. Then that night. Slime. And slime ever since :/ -

Severe slime choking me constantly and acid in lungs at night
RickM replied to Kate207's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
There are some Facebook groups specifically for people who have had gastrectomies, both total and partial, and that may provide better context and patient experience than a basic WLS group like this. That said, it sounds to me, in my non MD view, that you may have some kind of stricture, where the stomach has twisted or folded over in itself owing to it now odd geometry; the sudden onset leads me to this type of conclusion. What you have had surgically is not a classic sleeve gastrectomy (most likely, at least) but rather some variation, particularly if they were trying to minimize the amount of stomach they were removing. That puts it outside the normal bariatric experience base. Frequently what is done in these cases is a partial gastrectomy that is more akin to an RNY gastric bypass, where they remove the lower part of the stomach including the pyloric valve, form a pouch with the remaining stomach and tie the exit some distance down the intestine. This, of course, depends upon where the tumor is, how much they need to remove, and surgeon's preference and experience. We rarely see these problems these days with a conventional WLS sleeve as they are fairly cookie cutter and routine once the surgeon has done a few dozen of them, but it does happen occasionally early on owing to inflammation from the surgery, but that usually resolves itself in a couple of weeks or so. The RNY type procedures are somewhat prone to strictures around the joint between the stomach pouch and intestine from scar tissue if that is the type of configuration that you have. The endoscopy (or a barium swallow test) should provide some answers, though I am a bit surprised that they aren't expediting that considering the situation. Hopefully you can get some answers soon. -
Hair is starting to thin a bit
Candigrl1 replied to liveaboard15's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
My hair shedding started around month 3 and is finally decreasing a bit. I had already had massive shedding before surgery so maybe that's why it slowed down so fast. I see lots of scalp now but I'm going to wait until it stops then see the hairdresser about what type of cut I want. Hang in there it will start to decrease and eventually stop. As for the stalls I usually get one every month and of course this month was no exception. I reexamined my diet and found I was drinking way too much Crystal Light (approx 50-60 oz) and have switched back to plain water and have started losing again though a bit slower. Stay safe out there in Florida! -
I'm sorry you're not feeling 100%. I'm not sure if this is helpful but I am having trouble being motivated to eat the food I should. I realized on Friday I havn't been walking and I haven't gotten any real sunlight in the last week. I started making an effort to get outside and take my vitamin d. I think its helping.

Clothing subscription services?
Queen ApisM replied to KimA-GA's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I've started using Eloquii's service. You actually pick out the clothes you want to rent and they send you a selection of those you picked. I did it mostly because my work clothing situation is sad right now, and I am going in 1x week again and don't want to wear jeans all the time. I also was tired of wearing old things (granted, old things I haven't worn in 17 years) and wanted to feel better about my clothing situation. I've enjoyed it - I've tried things I would never have bought, and Eloquii also lets you buy stuff you like at a deep discount. Seriously the discount is dangerous because I keep buying the cute skirts and tops because they are hella cheap. Having said that, Eloquii has a trendier profile than Avenue or Lane Bryant, so some of their items might not be things you are willing to wear, depending on comfort level. Having said that, though, I have enjoyed it and it has made me willing to try some new stuff because I am not committed to it permanently. I totally think it is worth trying one of these services, especially as you venture into new territory where you don't have any sizes in your closet and you want new stuff! -
Hair is starting to thin a bit
kcuster83 replied to liveaboard15's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Stay safe out there! We have a vacation planned for Florida the first week of next month, hope it is cleared out by then. My hair is thick and has always had a lot of shedding so I can't really tell if it is more than normal or not. My ponytail seems a bit smaller so maybe it is but not enough to stress. Hopefully it stays that way! I think I am in a stall too, my first one since 3 weeks post op! I thought for a minute I was dodging stalls. haha (yea right). I have lost 3lbs over the past 3 weeks. THIS TOO SHALL PASS! -
So i am about 5 and a half months post op. My hair is starting to thin out. Knew it was coming, Oh well lol. It will grow back eventually. Lost almost no weight so far this month. guessing i am in a stall again... gotta hate it lol. anyways prepping for a hurricane here in Florida. Should be here by the end of the week.

September surgery buddies!!
Hope4NewMe replied to Slwhurst's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I think everything is normal because everyone is different. It could be so many things that effect weight loss. . Just keep following your program and give it more time. Everyone looses at different rates and maybe next week you will have a large loss or maybe you will be slow by steady and still reach your goal. Hugs! Its hard not to have huge losses after going through all of this. But its going to be a long journey so don't stress too much, just keep at it and every little pound will add up. -
has anyone else his a weird low? I was feeling really good, but this last week I am miserable. I have no appetite, I can't get my water in, everything tastes and smells bad to me. Its to the point where I would rather not eat than possible be nauseous because of it. So all that makes me tired all the time. I am hating this.

Severe slime choking me constantly and acid in lungs at night
St77 replied to Kate207's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
In the first few weeks after my bypass I kept choking on slime in my throat and that was also coming up when I was heaving. The surgeon said that I had a lot of mucus and that's what was coming up. I wonder if Carafate is something would help the acid issue you are having. Good luck, I hope you find some relief. -

I just hit my first real stall at one month post-op. I had asked my husband to hide the scale so I wouldn't obsess and only weigh weekly. Got on the scale Saturday and I hadn't lost a single ounce from the previous week. I was expecting 3-5 lbs. So discouraged.

Hey there! I came to wish everyone in Oct good luck but saw your post and thought I could help answer your question! I’m nearly 3 weeks post-op and feeling *almost* back to normal but I can shed some light on the first couple of weeks. You will be very, very tired when you get home. I don’t recall nausea (I know for sure I didn’t vomit) but the gas is for real. Walking helps. Take it slow and do laps in your house. I didn’t experience too much pain (I had no narcotics) just 1000mg Tylenol, Gabapentin & Celebrex…weird combo but it worked. I needed it for the whole week mainly for the laparoscopic incisions and the largest one has some really deep internal sutures that are painful. Stay hydrated - tiny, tiny sips of water. You can figure out protein later but you will 100 legit not be hungry - it’s weird. Forget it if you are a side sleeper…invest in a back support pillow because you will need it. I’ve also seen that a lot of people lounge/sleep in a recliner…if I had it to do over again I would likely have invested in one. Roll out of bed holding a pillow to your tummy and letting gravity assist. Do not lift heavy things or reach for things overhead (I would prepare your home now anticipating no lifting/reaching). But, you will definitely be able to manage! All of these things get better and better each day - 3 weeks out seems to be the magic time when everything gets a lot easier. Sorry for the long post but I’m hoping this will be helpful!! Good luck! -
Severe slime choking me constantly and acid in lungs at night
Kate207 posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hello :-) I'm 9 weeks post surgery and honestly this has ruined my life I don't feel this is ever going to stop and I'm so scared. So my story is a little different. I had a laparoscopic gastric sleeve because I had a benign tumour growing on the outside of my stomach. My gastric sleeve is a smaller op than normal because they didn't take as much of my stomach away but I can't understand why I'm suffering so badly. Due to other health issues I've also got dysphagia and have been on a permanent liquid diet since 2016 and already very underweight. This is unrelated to the benign tumour and still being investigated. I never had any issues with acid before surgery. Anyhow, after surgery I was doing really well. The first few weeks I was building up to 4 300ml ensure shakes a day quite well. I felt great but this might have been the painkillers I was on for a pneumothorax. I wasn't taking the anti reflux medication as they couldn't prescribe it in liquid form and the orodispersable ones had hundreds of tiny hard capsules in them which made them difficult to swallow. But I was ok. No reflux problems. Then suddenly everything changed. I started getting the general foamies at first. Which I could deal with as they were quick in passing and after a google search I eased off the ensure shakes a little, drank more slowly and drank more water. I was started on omeprazole capsules that I have to open up and dissolve in water so I'm not really getting the full 40mg of it. I never miss taking this though. Over the past 6 weeks its gotten to the point that I no longer have foamies I have this constant thick sticky slime in my throat which is so bad I'm now losing sleep due to waking up choking and trying to hack it up. Every night is a nightmare. I go to sleep and start producing more thick slime and breathing in acid that I wake up choking and covered in sweat. I'm panicked trying to get the slime up to breathe, coughing up acid, gagging, choking on the slime, gulping on the huge lumps of slime that I can't hack up or swallow and sometimes vomiting. Its now gotten to the point that I'm living on a few cups of tea a day and water as I can't get the ensures past the slime during the day. Even an empty stomach has made no difference. I saw my surgeon and nutritionist finally a few days ago who treated me like I'd had something as simple as a tooth extraction and were unbothered by my weight loss, the fact that I can no longer get ensures down so I'm basically not eating at all and that I'm becoming depressed dealing with this choking slime and acid despite taking omeprazole. He's scheduling an endoscopy but in the meantime I'm honestly just so done with dealing with this. Its completely ruining my life. I can't eat, I can't sleep and I'm tortured every second by this choking slime in my throat. I have a young child to look after and I feel so tired and panicked daily. Has anyone dealt with the slime constantly? Rather than just when eating too much? Has anyone found a way to reduce stomach acid if already on anti reflux meds? Thank you in advance for any replies. -

Blood thinners after gastric sleeve
Spinoza replied to skinny44's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Oh wow - such different post-op regimes (as ever here)! I needed to inject blood thinners for 4 weeks post-op. My surgeon told me he didn't care whether I was running a marathon by then, I still had to do it. I had no other risk factors than obesity and bariatric surgery. -
My tips and why I Don't recommend Sleeve surgery for long term
KimA-GA replied to strawberryga's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I have never heard of bypass to sleeve. Would be great for you to tell us more. I would think that would be difficult to do considering the anatomy of both surgeries. Committing to changing your lifestyle and dealing with the underlying issues with food is hard work. you can out eat any surgery! Gastric sleeve, d/s, bypass etc are all just tools to help you be able to better control your consumption of calories . Personally, my issues with food brought me to this weight and will bring me back to it if I do not continue to work on and control my food issues. I have seen a few people I know eat themselves obese again after bypass. (One with bypass resumed her constant Dr Pepper drinking two weeks in because she “couldn’t live” without several cans a day. Surprise surprise she didn’t loose as much as she thought and is creeping back). Sleeve does work well for a majority of people, especially those who make the changes. I hope you are finding a path to achieve what you want. -
Don’t worry everything is gonna be ok I’m on my 2 week just get relax good look

Guys is it normal to be terrified of my surgery tomorrow? I am getting the gastric sleeve and this has been a two year process. I’ve been on the liquid diet for 2 weeks and now that my surgery day is here I am extremely nervous. I suffer from anxiety so I know that plays a part. Anyone have this un easy feeling ?

My surgery is on Wednesday and this morning I finished my protein shake I purchased from my doctors office. According to them my pre-op supplies are exactly for the 2 weeks of liquids. I just have my soups. What am I to drink until Tuesday? Sent from my SM-A716U using BariatricPal mobile app

My tips and why I Don't recommend Sleeve surgery for long term
strawberryga posted a topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Iv'e had BOTh the ruen-y bypass surgery that was successful FOR over 10 years, after having a baby, gaining weight back and having vitamin deficiency issues I had a revision to a gastric sleeve. The sleeve has been a joke, there is no stopping me from over eating sweets or fried foods, I was sick when I ate those things with a ruen-y. I had an upper gi last week (I am 7 years post op of revision) Dr says my stomach looks like any other non surgery stomach he sees. So much for my surgery dr saying stomachs dont stretch. 1.Ruen-y is more evasive but it keeps you from eating sweets/fried foods without becoming so ill you have to lay down for 2 hours. (not dangerous, just very uncomfortable) 2.If you have weight loss surgery be SURE to have lipo suction after you've lost most of y our weight. Once you grow a fat cell you NEVER loose it unless you have it removed by having lipo suction or cool sculpting. A fat cell will lay flattened until you have extra calories that need stored then they pop right up. Get rid of them b&&*$ right away, you can still grow more cells if you over eat but it takes time to grow them new, old cells are like little saboteurs waiting to fill up again. 3. If you don't like aerobic activity try chill-aerobics. Sit somewhere cold.. shiver and ur body burns fat. 15 min. of shivering equals 30min,. of aerobic activity. Your body will burn fat to try and warm you up. (it's actually opposite in a polar bears body) -
I'm feeling EXACTLY this way. Even worse since I was told this week to weigh myself every 3 days, not good for my mental health! I weighed myself this morning, swore I wouldn't be upset, yet still was crying and I'm still so upset 3 hours later. I also thought this surgery would change my slow loser status. I gobbled up the success stories and thought, hey maybe THIS time I'll be one of those successes! Nope! I'm doing the math, pre-op I was told I should expect to lose 125 my first year. Unless I suddenly start losing a steady 3 lbs a week, which I haven't done so far...there's no way I'll hit that. I wanted to lose 160 lbs, and if I can't lose it in the first year it's extremely difficult, yet it's ALREADY so difficult...I just don't see how realistic reaching my goal is. I'm already drinking my water, getting my protein, exercising 6 days a week 40-60 minutes. Weighing and measuring my food, tracking everything that passes my lips, following every single instruction I've been given. There's nothing I can do more, I really think I'm only going to weigh myself monthly or every 2 weeks. Every weigh-in is so traumatic, telling me I'm failing AGAIN, I'll never be one of those success stories. I'm not going to quit, but I don't know how to adjust my expectations. Every time I swear I'm going to feel ok about whatever the scale says, but I'm not. When not weighing myself I feel good about my progress. I'm stymied on how to handle this. So yes, I understand how you feel.

I had mine done in Tijuana, Mexico almost 3 weeks ago. It cost me 6320.00 American dollars plus my travel there by plane to San Diego, California where a driver picks you up from the airport and takes you across the border. I chose Frontier airlines and it was about 250 for a round trip ticket. All was very professional and safe. They take better care of you than any hospital I've ever been to in the USA. My doctor was Dr. Papilla and he was wonderful. You can even purchase your surgery video after its all done if you want. That is 50 bucks. I chose to have my after care meds delivered to the hospital for 180 bucks but you could get a prescription instead if you prefer. Its a very seamless experience and I have already lost 50 pounds since I started this journey. I started at 318 pounds and today weighed in at 268 pounds. That includes the preoperative diet that started 4 weeks prior to surgery. The day I weighed in for surgery (September 6th 2022) I was a whopping 295. My diabetes is gone, my fatty liver is reversed and my vision has returned almost completely (I can read without my glasses again) and the swelling in my legs is nearly gone. I have a personalized diet plan with their dietitian and they are still keeping in touch with me. I am so pleased with them. I had surgery at Hopsital CIBA through a company based in California called Be Slim Bariatrics. They ONLY do bariatric surgeries. The doctor will approve you for the surgeries he sees fit vased on your medical application and you can choose the one you want to go with. I chose Gastric bypass instead of the sleeve since I researched it and found that it was more likely to reverse diabetes. I took the gamble and feel like I have WON! The doctor speaks English and most of the nurses do too. I put a translator on my phone and we had no issues. I do not regret this decision and I would do it all over again. My only regret is having waited so long to jump on it. Beslimbariatrics.com It literally is saving my life. Health insurance in Texas said its purely cosmetic and refused to even consider it. I feel alive again. Diabetes was literally killing me. If you have any questions please let me know. I was scared to go but after researching for almost a year I made the decision to leap. I figured that I was dying anyway and I would rather die trying than to sit back and wait for diabetes to kill me first. Oh and the hotel they put you in the night before surgery was the nicest place I have ever stayed. I literally felt like a movie star. Its gorgeous. They transport you to the hotel and to the hospital. Its called the Quartz Hotel in Tijuana, Mexico. Look it up. I couldn't have asked for a better experience.
