6 weeks post op ZERO WEIGHT LOSS AND DEPRESSED

btw - yes, you can absolutely stall after one week. My "three week stall" (which most of us experience) was weeks 2 & 3. Not a pound lost during those two weeks.
  2. My surgiversary is 6/18/19. Three years out and I look and feel great! I weighed 280 pre-op and lost 140. My biggest complaint is gas. I was feeling terribly self conscious because I thought I lost too much weight. Took me awhile to get used to it.

As my post mentions. I have lost two pounds in five weeks. To me that is pretty much nothing. I shouldn’t stall after one week. i log EVERYTHING. i have zero support from Mexico so paid to see a dietitian here instead of the six month wait through a referral. the dietitian said because of kidney issues that landed me in the hospital week 2/3 to avoid protein powder (I’m also allergic to whey) and to keep my proteins around 50-60. She also said to get minimum 1000-1200 cals a day. She also told me not to worry so much about the fibre fat and sugar and carbs right now. But I still do. I won’t eat rice, pasta, or salads. And if I eat bread it’s only gluten free toast low carb. Any crackers are either made from cheese, sweet potatoes, or almonds. we also went through all of my supplements and she said that they are perfectly fine. The colonic cleanser also went through all of my supplements and medication and also said they were fine. I’ve also increased my calories as suggested by two other people who had the surgery by 200 cal the last few days which was really hard but it hasn’t helped any. as mentioned in my original post I literally have never felt restrictions on what I ate I would have to stop myself. It’s only been the last couple weeks maybe even three weeks that I actually feel full. And that was a concern I brought up to the dietician to is that I can eat a whole container of yoghurt and still keep going if I wanted to. I never did though. so I’m at a loss. Either there’s something really wrong with me or it’s completely normal to only lose 2 pounds in five weeks. here are some ss from the app I use

Thank you so much! I'm trying to work on my patience. It's been 3 weeks, but feels like 3 months! I keep telling myself it will all be worth it.

21 pounds in 5 weeks isn't zero... That is normal. Stalls in the first month are also super common, and I would say that the majority of us have had them. Normal weight loss with a sleeve is 10-12 pounds a month. you went beyond that. Having the colonic emptied your system, now you are adding back to it. The water that went in, did eventually come out, along with anything else that came out. Just be patient and stick to your program.

I don’t think the stomach they remove really weighs much. I didn’t lose any weight in the hospital. It’s possible that you were slightly dehydrated and lost more water weight in the beginning since you didn’t spend as much time at the hospital hooked up to fluids. Then when you got rehydrated your weight loss that week didn’t show because you added fluid weight?? There are honestly soooo many factors when you just went through major surgery that could cause weight gain or loss. It’s best to not even weigh yourself for the first few weeks. I would just look at the overall if I were you rather than trying to account for every pound because for six weeks out you are going great.

But you have lost a total of 21 pounds in 6 weeks so that is normal and good, I didn't loose that much.you will have weeks where you don't loose much it's part of the healing process and the journey in general

    Start to Surgery Date

This is very independent to each surgery center and insurance company. My insurance required a 4 month process, but my surgery center required a 6 month minimum with the "potential for fast tracking". They said that they require the 6 months to show your dedication and make sure you really understand the process and the life long changes. I was fast tracked, about 5 months total. Once I finished all of the insurance requirements and did my final weight check for the surgery center I had my last apt with the surgeon and surgery was scheduled. It took about a week for insurance approval and I had surgery about 3 weeks after my last apt with the surgeon.

You can eat way more than I could at 6 weeks out. I had a tough time of nausea and sickness. For months I only managed about 300 calories a day. Even now at 10 months out I can only manage 800 to 1000 Cals a day. This made me have slow weight loss because my body was holding on to everything, I managed to give it. So, let's see if we can find out what's going on with you Are you on regular foods now or still on pureed? We are all given different plans so we don't know what yours will be. Can you show a food diary for a typical day ? How is your protein intake ?

Two pounds lost in five weeks? How is that normal? It’s making me feel like something is wrong. The other 19 was legit the first week and included whatever the weight of my stomach was that came out and water I was retaining. So what has changed since then? I went and did a colonic hydro cleanse and came home heavier than I went in too. ps. Thank you for your reply I do appreciate it ❤️

21 lbs in five weeks is very normal. We started off at about the same weight, and that's about where I was at that point I think shows like "My 600 lb Life" give people unrealistic expectations about their weight loss. You have to remember that those people start off at MUCH higher BMIs than the average WLS patient. Most of us lose somewhere in the 15-25 lb range the first month. So your loss is perfectly normal! I went on to lose over 200 lbs - so the surgery works as long you're committed and stick to your plan. Edited to add that almost all of us hit our first major stall sometime during the first month after surgery. It's usually the third week, thus we call it "the three week stall". That may explain the 2 lb drop over those couple of weeks (367 to 365 lbs). If you search this site for "the three week stall" you will find over 17,000 posts on it (and no, I am NOT kidding). but overall, you have lost 21 lbs since surgery. Again, that's a normal loss for the first five weeks.
  12. At a loss here. went to Mexico and had surgery Aug 12. Less than 24 hours after surgery I had to leave Tijuana because of the civil unrest going there. I have only heard from the dietician once they do not answer my emails or messages through WhatsApp. to the point where I paid a dietician on my own here in Canada. I went from consuming pre-surgery over five 6000 cal a day to now always sticking between 1000 and 1200 as per dietician. I used to only walk 500 to 1000 steps a day and I’m now doing 5000 to 6000 minimum a day. i have not smoked a cigarette even since before surgery. I went for a colonic cleanse last week and I’m taking many many supplements. because of kidney issues when I do take protein powders I cannot take them anymore according to my doctor and dietician so I make sure to get lots of protein through Greek yoghurt and chicken or ham or turkey or other vegetables. I started off day of surgery at 386. after surgery I was 373. When I made it back home to Canada five days later (stayed in California to rest before flight back) my doctor Weighed me at 367. Five weeks later I am at 365. I have never puked, and for over a month I would get feelings of being starving now finally I’m starting to get where my stomach says hey you’re full but I’ve always been very careful to track everything that goes in my mouth from day one. I am making sure to get all my liquids in. I am so depressed at this point I don’t know what to do and I just feel like giving up and saying screw it and going back to my old habits. I’m beginning to wonder if maybe the doctor in Mexico messed up the surgery or if there’s something really wrong with me I’ve gone to my family doctor four times and she doesn’t seem that concerned and said that she’ll keep an eye on it. has anybody else go through this?
  13. I’ve had first appt and now scheduled for bone density and nutrition tomorrow and psychologist and program director Oct 18 . I have to do my sleep apnea test next week and meet with exercise specialist that should be it . How long do you think it will take to get a date based on your experiences? TIA

Glad you're also doing well! (And glad to know I'm not the only one after hearing all the horror stories here.) Please let me know what your doctor says? I don't have a follow-up until 2 weeks after and would be curious to know what they say, as I'm in the same boat in terms of what I can eat. I suspect since it's liquid, it's flowing right out of the pouch into the small intestines, but I'm thinking real food won't do that. Tomorrow is my first day on purees, so have not had a chance to find out yet how anything will feel other than liquids.

Oh girl, don’t get down on yourself! 3 weeks is still really early! My energy was so low too until I started being able to eat actual food and take my vitamins. Also, my dietitian said she didn’t care if I puréed my food in a blender or in my mouth so long as by the time I swallowed it was basically mush. This helped me soooo much because puréed food is disgusting! I was able to add in so much more food this way which helped. Just remember, it feels so long and hard but in the grand scheme of things, it’s actually such a short amount of time. 1-2 months is the hardest but you’ll get through it, I promise!
  16. Hi Bypass, I have been absent, sorry. I had my revision March 21, I can’t believe it’s been 6 months! I now know how eating with bypass is different from with the band. It feels more natural to me too. I started out following the guidelines to the letter but have since slacked off a bit. I meet with the nutritionist tomorrow and the physician assistant Wednesday; they will help me get back on track. My recovery was pretty easy, I was lucky. The surgery pain only lasted a week (except for sneezing!). have been able to eat any food I’ve tried and have only vomited when I failed to stop eating after getting my signal - hiccups. I’m down about 73 lb but still want to lose a little more. I’m trying to hit the gym 3 x a week but most weeks it’s only 2. I have a ton more energy and my blood pressure is under control. I hope you’ve had similar successes, thanks to my surgeon. Let me know how you are doing now. Take care.
  17. Hi all, I had a sleeve in 2014 and a revision to bypass in 2017 due to severe GERD. My resting heart rate has been low consistently for several years (40s-low 50’s) and although I exercise, I am by no means an athlete. I have dealt with on and off light headedness for a while, and have fainted probably 3-4 times over the years, the most recent time this last week. I honestly hadn’t even thought about my WLS being related, but came across an old post on here today that was talking about low heart rates and did some research online. It sounds like low heart rates aren’t that uncommon after surgery, but my understanding is that this is something that usually resolves itself eventually. Has anyone dealt with fainting or low heart rates this far out from surgery? I did reach out to my doctor this past episode and she’s referring me to a cardiologist, but I thought I would check here since I’m sure this isn’t something a normal PCP would come across often. Thanks so much!

    Still getting ill...

At almost 4 years out I started to get nauseous for no reason. I have been like this since Feb. it’s not food. I really can’t figure out what it is & neither can any Dr including my surgeon. He did an EDG a couple weeks ago & didn’t see anything wrong. some days I’m good & somedays, like today, I’m bad! I have been to my PCP, gastrointestinal, urologist, naturopath & my surgeon. Who else can I try?

    September surgery buddies!!

I'm so glad you are doing so well! I too am having an easier than expected time. I am hitting my water and protein goals since getting home but I still don't know what full feels like and getting to hit those goals worries me a bit. I can somewhat feel full when drinking my protein shake, but it doesn't even feel like anything until I hit around 6 oz. Then I feel pressure but not bad pressure, no nausea, no pain. I am drinking slower on purpose, so my drink will take me like 40 to 60 min to drink, but that's more by choice then by need. I've eaten a 4 oz sugar free pudding in about 5 min and didn't feel anything either until like 40 min later and then I felt pressure. I have my drs appointment tomorrow as my one week check up after my bypass and I'm going to tell him my worries so hopefully I'll have some answers soon. As far as pain, I have been using the belly binder (wrong name) and that has pretty much kept the pain away. I have been able to sleep on my sides and roll over, even when I was in the hospital. Take it off and its a different story though lol. I hope we continue to do well and no bombs drop!

    September surgery buddies!!

I'm wondering if I'm the oddball here? I keep hearing about all the challenges everyone's having and this almost feels too easy to me. I'm one week post surgery and I've had very little pain and no nausea at all. I'm easily able to get in all my fluids and protein and then some. I've not developed any aversions to anything, so have been fine with the fairlife protein shakes and a bit of bone broth to mix it up a bit. I do have lower energy than I'd like, but that's to be expected as I heal. Evenso, I still have been able to get in 30-40 minutes of walking a day. I think the only sub-optimal thing I've experienced is a few dizzy spells (maybe once a day). I can't tell for sure at this point if it's hypotension, but that's what I suspect. Since it just happens in passing, by the time I check my BP, it's in the normal range, with my diastolic borderline low (60-62). I'm honestly waiting for the the bomb to drop. If something can go wrong medically, I'm typically the poster child.

Not every doctor requires a preop diet. mine also doesnt. You can check just to be sure though, I did as well. They just told me to stay away from fatty foods the week before and no carbonated beverages. I also notice you are a lower BMI like myself, and its pretty common for lower BMIs. Generally you dont have the same issues with fatty liver as someone higher and thus no need to do the liver shrinking diet.- this is how it was explained to me.

Totally agree with that especially weight loss and moving through stages of food! But kellyarw95 and NewmeDC, here are a few practical things that I learned: You will be very, very tired when you get home. I don’t recall nausea (I know for sure I didn’t vomit) but the gas is for real. Walking helps and a heating pad on your back/shoulders. Take it slow and do laps in your house. I didn’t experience too much pain but definitely needed meds for the whole week mainly for the laparoscopic incisions and the largest one has some really deep internal sutures that are painful. Stay hydrated - tiny, tiny sips of Water. You can figure out Protein later but you will 100 legit not be hungry - it’s weird. Forget it if you are a side sleeper…invest in a back support pillow because you will need it. I’ve also seen that a lot of people lounge/sleep in a recliner…if I had it to do over again I would likely have invested in one. Roll out of bed holding a pillow to your tummy and letting gravity assist. Do not lift heavy things or reach for things overhead/down low. Hope that’s helpful. Good luck!

    August surgery buddies!

Thanks for sharing! I recently had my six week evaluation and so far I’ve lost 12 kilos or 26 pounds after surgery, so I’m pretty much on track for my starting weight. Yes, the stalls can be very frustrating and I had one for almost three weeks in the beginning of this month. But then the number on the scale started moving again. I still vomit sometimes, especially after dinner, no matter how careful I try to be. Happened tonight. So that’s my biggest problem, still.
  25. Thank you for this. This really makes sense! My consultant explained a few days ago that it was the lower part of my stomach that was removed although thats all he said. They never really go into much detail. I'll ask about the pyloric valve as I think you're right on this. Regarding the twisting this also fits. I never suffered from this slime or reflux until approx 3 weeks after surgery. I stupidly chugged back approx 750ml of a litre bottle of milkshake quite fast and instantly felt sick. I had extreme pain in my stomach so I went and lay down. As I did I had this strange muscle spasm in my stomach followed by a weird flopping sensation inside. Exactly as if my stomach had moved position. Thats the only way I can describe it. I was going to go to A and E but held off. The pain eased. The sickness went away. Then that night. Slime. And slime ever since :/
