    So Cal Kaiser Permenente?

I have Kaiser in Orange County. They have you go through the Options program which is the medically supervised diet. Then, once you meet their criteria and do lots of tests, etc. they give you a list of surgery centers that you can go to. I'm having my surgery at Pacific Bariatric in San Diego. Once you select your surgery center you have to go for an orientation with the center and then you have your pre-op appointments and then you get your surgery date. It has taken me over a year to get through the entire process, I know for some it's shorter and others it's longer. Because yours is a revision you might get approved and through the process much faster than that.
  2. Revision surgery? I was sleeved, nothing to revise to since all of my health conditions have been resolved.

    sleeve or band?

I had originally asked about the band as well until I went to a seminar and learned about the sleeve. I also have friends who had the lap band and are not at all happy with it. The sleeve is the perfect solution! Why wouldn't you want to have the size of your stomach reduced permanently? It is the best thing I have ever done. There are alot of people here on this board who are band to sleeve revisions - lots of problems and lack of success with the bands. Don't even go there. Go with a sleeve and have a lifetime tool!

    Revision Gone Wrong

I had a revision to sleeve on the 16th. Luckily I used an amazing top Dallas bariatric physician. I too had the ng tube for a couple of days and just that alone slowed my recOvery in the hospital. Soon as that was out I was doing great. Today was my first follow up. Thank God everything looked okay. The only problem I am having is getting my protein and liquids in. I stay so incredibly full. They told me that Sunday I can start full liquids and that I will not feel as full by then that I had a major surgery and there is swelling. I forgot to mention they repaired a hiatal hernia and i think that has made things a little harder. No pain until today. My mother in law told me that her mother always told her that the 7th day after any surgery is the worse. I think I am a believer now haha. I wish you the best of luck and strength. It is wonderful to hear all the stories good or bad. Don't just jump in. I'm glad I ended up not.

    Oh the doubts!

Just wanted to throw out there that my starting BMI was over 49, and now look at it ! ! ! I wouldn't really be too concerned with a 10% of EWL after 5 years, think of what's going to happen in 5 years with bypass vs. VSG in ways of nutrient/vitamin deficiencies. Don't sell the sleeve or yourself short! ! ! I know that statistics are a great resource, but let's be honest, those stats are only as good as the people questioned. I would recommend checking out the revision and complication forum on obesityhelp.com so you can see for yourself the number of people that are looking at revising from RNY to either DS or ERNY because of weight gain or pouch issues. I won't try to convince you that the sleeve is your best option because you have to make the choice that is best for you, but I challenge you to really think about the fact that with RNY you get only 2 years of malabsorption of calories/fats then after that time period, the intestines adjust and start absorbing everything you eat calorie/fat/carb wise and you get a lifetime of vitamin/nutrient malabsorption. Plus a pouch can and does stretch, our stomach stretching is so minimal and we get to keep our pyloric valve which is a big plus. . . Also, no medication or food restriction for VSG. So, with VSG, you get a non-stretching stomach, no malabsorption, can take all meds, no food restrictions, and you get to keep your pyloric valve (I know I said that twice, but it's really important LOL). . . I had a pouch with my band, and it sucked. My body hated it, it wasn't natural, and nothing feels as good as being able to eat all foods without issue. I know I'm biased, but it's hard to argue that I might have made the wrong decision with VSG when I stare my size 0 Gap jeans ! ! !

    August 29th, Sloooowwww Going

Day 19 post-op. I'm down .2 pounds after a big stall. Wonder if this means the stall is over? I hope so; tomorrow will tell. Although I'm two days from mushies, I've been eating clear chicken noodle soup with some mushy small bites of veggies and an occasional noodle. Went down fine. That's all I'm doing except for my Medifast oatmeal thinned way down. Monday I can have cottage cheese and other mushy stuff, oh boy!:biggrin2: Energy is slowing returning. I notice a bit more every day. I can walk through a parking lot without it draining me. My incision from the drain finally closed after about 16 days but that's going to leave a big scar.:mad0:. I wish they could have made that hole a little smaller to begin with. Oh well, the nip/tuck can be revise that.:cursing:

    Revision Gone Wrong

So glad you are doing better. Thank you for sharing your story as it is important for people to know the risks! I have been told that risk of leakage is higher for band to sleeve revisions. It was one of the things I was most scared of as statistically it is a much higher rate then 1% for us revisions.

    My lap band journey

I visited with the doctors this past week. They are putting into insurance to authorize band removal. I'm so happy about that. I just need to wait 2-4 weeks to hear from them if insurance will approve. Then we will wait 3-6 months for everything to heal and try for revision. Not sure if I will go for a sleeve or bypass yet. One step at a time though. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

    My lap band journey

Hi Bugaboo, I feel what you are going through. This is the catch about getting the band removed: you either pay for it out of pocket,,,not an option or if your BMI is still high the insurance company will only cover if you have a revision which means they take out the bad and give you a full bypass! But my doctor showed me what needed to be done to remove the band and do the repairs wi h you end up having part of the stomach removed so I'm going to get the full bypass I wish you much luck on your journey! 13. I have battled with my weight since I was young but pretty much kept it under control with working out and diet. Late 2009 I started having issues with my hips and was unable to walk more then just a few feet, so the weight just piled on was at my heaviest 312 I'm 5"7. My doctor recommended I have a bariatric consultant. At the time the way things went with the bariatric doctor it seemed like the magic pill we al dream of. Just one consult and I was underway to my upcoming surgery I had to lose 10% of my weight. Took me about 3 months and had my surgery January of 2011. I was outpatient surgery and was home by dinner. I have to say it was fairly easy very little pain, some shoulder gas pain I walked off. Being on the liquid diet the weight came off quick and I followed the liquid diet to a T. No issues weight came off and I was back to my normal activity within 2 weeks. Solid foods in the beginning where great small portions and chewed everything very carefully. Fast forward to 2014 I am down to 220 total weight loss 92 pounds feeling and looking great. Went from size 24 to 16. I had to watch everything I ate because the weight was creeping back so I went on weight watchers at this time I had put on about 25 pounds but back down to around 220. I never lost anymore weight. When I went back to my bariatric doctor for fills I was almost full...that's when things went down hill...after that I threw up every day every meal and still not weight loss but weight gain, then came the reflux...so bad I was taking medicine and eating bottles of tums every day, had to sleep with a wedge..but worse then that was my asthma was so bad, I was taking tons of prednisone my immunity was going down, I had thrush for five weeks...I was a mess, not to mention my weight was up to 263. My bariatric doctor said just go back on liquids I did but who can live on liquid for ever...finally my primary doctor got me a consultation with a different bariatric doctor and he was amazing ran test found out I had an ulcer around my band. I will not even do bands do to 50 % of patients having issues, I am no awaiting my insurance to authorize a band removal and revision to full gastric bypass...the band was a nightmare for me.., my band is open all the way now, my reflux and asthma is great! I've lost 8 pounds and going to meet with the nutritionist next month.... Sent from my iPad using the BariatricPal App
  14. I've read that after sleeve surgery you don't have to have much pain med. .....tarodol which isn't a narcotic is what most say they are given. Is it the same with a revision? I would think after removing the band and port plus any adhesions you would have quite a bit of pain for 3-4 days. Can anyone give me their experiences? Thank you

    Pain after revision

I had my band removed and revision in two separate surgeries. The band removal was a breeze. I think I took one dose of Percocet the night of surgery and that was it. The sleeve revision was not much worse and the surgeon said I had a bunch of adhesions. The original band surgery was by far the worst of the three but less of a recovery than my c-section. I'm pretty sure most revision patients will tell you that the sleeve is so much better than the band. You'll do great. Good luck!

    Pain after revision

I had my revision done Monday the 28th. The band procedure was lil to no pain. The revision was a lot more painful, but not due to the incisions but because of the gas they fill us up with. I certainly did use the PCA and was also getting the taradol. Right now I'm on the Vicodin every 4 hours. But it's getting better.
  17. I'm in a bind myself. I have United healthcare, and had no problem getting my surgery paid for in 9/07 since I was morbidly obese. On 11/5/09, I just had a revision surgery to remove/replace my LAP-BAND® VG to a LAP-BAND® APL... Doc said I was all set. I called and they didn't say I wasn't covered. Today, I just rec'd a letter from UHC saying my surgery is NOT covered. WTF???? I am very upset.. I HAD to have the surgery. It was NOT optional. Their reason was that I was NO lONGER morbidly obese, and therefore was not able to get the surgery! Not too mention, without the surgery, my stomach had prolapsed up over my band, and 1 night I coudn't even swallow my own spit.... Will keep you posted. Brenda

    Can’t make a decision

On the other hand, you can try sleeve, which as you say, is less invasive and has fewer malabsorption risks longterm....and see how it works. If it's not working, you can do a revision to DS. The majority of patients have very good luck with sleeve. it's a personal judgement call.
  19. I used mederma and I think it made a huge difference they are very light. My tummy tuck scar is below my bikini line yep I wear a bikini! I just was revised from band to bypass so have some new scars but will be using mederma again.. Tummy tuck was awesome and I love my new belly button
  20. I was banded June 3rd 2010 I have lost 120 lbs to date how is everyone else doing! I had a minor set back when I had port revision surgery in July to place a smaller low profile port. I'm finally back on track and losing weight again!

    New Here

So I've just this past week found VerticalSleeveTalk.com. My story - had the LapBand in September of 2005 - lost about 100lbs in the first two years and maintained between year 2-3. This still left me with an obese BMI but I'm very active and happy. Then I gained 29 lbs between year 3-4, thinking it was because I hadn't had a fill in years I requested a fill. Shortly after I developed heartburn, I had expierenced a few random bouts the year before but nothing like this. I went back to my doctor at 4.5 years and had an upper gi (thinking hernia...ha ha) and was diagosed with pouch dilation. At first I wanted to save my band at all costs. It was unfilled and I am waiting 6 weeks to go back for a second upper GI to see how the dilation is doing (doc doesn't seem optomistic). We did discuss my options if the band needs to come out and I told him that the sleeve would be my first choice as I don't want to dump or have vitamin issues. The office is doing a preapproval right now so we're ready to go at the end of the 6 weeks. I came home and have been researching the sleeve ever since and now I'm thinking that even if the dilation resolves, what are the chances it will happen again? The sleeve is looking better and better all the time. I've read my insurance company's requirement for revision and I qualify so I actually don't think there will be an issue there - Its probably going to cost me about $3000 out of pocket for copays/deductable that I really don't have but I'm gonna find it. I desearve to be healthy, pain free and not afraid to eat.

    Emotional Wreck

So I've been doing a lot of crying lately. I'm having very conflicting feelings about taking out my band and converting to a sleeve. At first I was thinking - well my band has been good to me, right?? I've lost 90lbs. Yes it can be hard at times. I've noticed in the past year that both my husband and I have been saying "we could have this for dinner but you can't eat it". I guess while living with the band you ignore, or take in stride the things you can't do as part of the price of weight loss. Yes, there are certain things I can't eat but its worth it right? Is there a better option, does it work, and is it worth it? Is eating with a sleeve really better? That ability to eat everything just less of it, kind of what I had been expecting from the band. The more I read and search the more I say WOW, and now I'm starting to become excited about a sleeve and that is where the guilt comes in. I've raved about the band, recommended it. I feel rather odd now saying, whoops it didn't quite work out how I had planned - isn't that partly my fault, technically the band just sits there, didn't I fail. Who's to say I wont screw up the sleeve to?? My husband doesn't understand and the rest of my close support network was used up with the band - their reaction now is "Well don't you know how to eat right now" - silly people, I've always known how to eat right, that doesn't mean anything. See now I'm rambling. I have so many emotions rolling around together right now and I'm having a hard time getting a handle on them. I'm happy that I'm getting the opportunity to revise because secretly this is what I've wanted for a while. I've always put on my brave band face but my band and I haven't been getting along for a while and I feel guilty about being excited and then I'm petrified that I'll just fail again anyway. The risks of a leak and general increased risk due to revision is also on my mind........ Then I see the revisions here that are so happy with their new lives - I was like that for the first 2 years after my band - will it last this time? My horoscope for today is kinda fitting: You may try to avoid an intense emotional interaction today by bringing the conversation back to the basic facts. It's not that you're disinterested in feelings; you just don't want to be overwhelmed by a topic that you cannot easily manage. Consider setting boundaries in a way that allows you to face your fears rather than run from them.

How Do You Stop The Anxiety?

Not being a revision case, I can't completely understand all your concerns. But, to address the "extreme" part: I think the process is fairly easy, unless there are complications. Most people don't have complications. I am seven weeks out and feel very good. I don't even feel like I have had surgery, I just can't eat like I used to. Overall, the surgery itself just seems like a blip in the big scheme of things. Of course, taking advantage of the processes leading up to surgery and readying yourself for this change will help you adjust better. Not preparing or living in denial of the changes that must occur may make things harder. I'll bet you'll be just fine!

    Other reasons for surgery

I had my Lap Band removed last April and awaiting revision to RNY also. And yeah I'm having to do the regular pre op program with my surgeon...
  25. As a revisionist, Dr Aceves said that I had so much scar tissue from my band that he added 5 days to each food stage. So, I had an additional 5 days (so 15 days I think??) on each phase. I know of another gal that was revised just after me and it was the same for her.. So, I think he just started doing this. I guess each doc is different. I was so terrified of injuring my staple line that (even though it was tough) I was 100% compliant. Best wishes to you!!! Erika
