Getting banded in 17 hours
divaofsongs replied to TNGirl's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I was just banded 5 days ago and I have to tell you that what you are experiencing is normal. It is called anxiety and I had a ton of it. I almost walked out of the surgery center 3 times before they wheeled me back. It is important to remember WHY you are getting banded. For me, it was to save my life in the long run. I have over 200 pounds to lose and if I did not do something soon, I was bound to die from obesity related diseases. It is 6 of one or a half dozen of the other. If you continue to live gaining more and more weight, then you can almost rest assured that things will go terribly wrong. You have to look at it as you are doing this to save your life. I wish you the best. -
I am at 10 months post-banding and wanted to share my NSVs with all of you. :clap2: In no particular order: 1. I have a noticable jawline & cheeckbones, and only 1 chin. 2. I can sit in any seat now and not be squished in by the sides. 3. I now shop in the misses section for my tops (size Large). 4. I weigh less now than I have for the last 18 years. 5. I can cross my legs! 6. I can sit in a booth in a resturant without my belly hitting the table. 7. My collarbones are visible again. 8. Hubby can reach all the way around me when he hugs me. 9. I am just over 1/2 way to my goal weight (mine, not doctors). 10. I can look down when standing and see my toes! At my first visit to the surgeon my weight was 329. I now am 249.6. My personal goal is 165 or so (doctor says 135). At 5', 3", that was a lot of weight to carry around. I work out 1 1/2 to 2 hrs 5 days a week at the gym and love it. I hope to be at goal weight at my 2 year bandaversary. Thanks for sharing with me.

Trying to get to the onerland:
shalotta1974 replied to grandmaofone's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
You doing a great job I have the same problem with certain foods and get sick easy as well just keep doing whats best for your body remember everybody differnt. I exercise three times a week I do elliptical and I love it. -
1.) To be healthy. Being as heavy as I was at 19 isn't healthy, and even though I didn't have severe health problems, I'm sure I was getting there. But 45lbs lighter I'm healthier feeling both physically and mentally. 2.) Comfort. I don't feel very comfortable carrying around 100lbs+ of extra weight. It sucks, and even dumb things such as going to the mall really makes me uncomfortable. The weight is coming off and I see myself feeling much better personally. 3.) I LOVE rollercoasters, though I always aimed for the middle of them because that's where the "heavier" people can fit. I never had a problem fitting, but it will be nice to go on and be able to sit where I want and not have to worry about a thing. 4.) Looks wise. Of course, at 19 going on 20 I wanna be able to look good and feel good too. I'm already down to a size L/XL in most clothing and down 2 pants sizes, so I'm getting there.

New and have questions
RestlessMonkey replied to RABarras's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Kiz summed it up pretty well. I had insurance (tricare standard) and it took me about 4 weeks from seminar to surgery (7/10 to 8/11) but there was no doubt, at 405, that I met the criteria. No tinkering with BMI etc etc. -
I have my date!!!!!Monday August 12th!!!!!!!!!
Countryheart2000 posted a topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I am so excited! I am on day day 5 of my 2 week preop diet. 3 slimfast shakes per day, with a lettuce and tomato salad with the supper shake. It is hard, but I am hanging in there. It is hard to cook for family and not eat. I can do this! Any other bandsters with same date? -
get supplement to take before and after surgery
MacMadame replied to ALISIA's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
It's not "sleeve vs. band", it's "doctor vs. doctor". Some say to wait to start up the Vitamins and some say to start out with liquids and chewables. I was on liquid Centrum and TUMS right way. I then moved to chewable Centrum and then regular. But I stayed on the TUMS too long and I think that contributed to my kidney stone. I was only supposed to be on it for 3 weeks and I was on them for at least 7! Anyway, I can't imagine it would be bad to be on vitamins early out, but I also think nothing horrible is going to happen to you if you miss a few weeks of vitamins and it is one less thing to think of and less pills to deal with. You are supposed to stay with very little pills immediately pre-op though. So it would be better IMO to not take vitamins at all than to take big horse pills until you are on regular food. But that's just my opinion. I'm not a doctor or nurse or anything. -
get supplement to take before and after surgery
ALISIA replied to ALISIA's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
thank you for telling me now ii know to ask my doctor when i see him again. are sleeve rules the same as band rules because last time i saw him i was going for the band. thank god for this site otherwise i would be making a big mistake. i know with all my other operations you have to stop taking supplements at least 3 days to a week before surgery. did your doc tell you why you cannot take it until your on solids is it because it not really absorbed properly or does it hurt you in some way? -
Thank you all so much! I am so encouraged that my emotions are normal and you've all given me something to think about. Vulnerable is a great description for how I feel about talking to folks right now. My husband is very supportive and so are my 3 daughters (27, 28, 29). Now that I've found support from folks who understand, I don't know if I'll feel the need to tell others. Can you hear me taking a big sigh of relief? :biggrin2:

I think it depends on your insurance. I called mine and found out I have to do a 3 month nutrition program. I am definitely 100 plus pounds overweight and am tired of my health deteriorating. I am 33 and weigh 235 and only 5' 4". I think my kids feel ashamed of me sometimes too:-( I would also like to be able to exercise without all the accompanying pain!

Starting This Journey....
dwbrown1978 replied to dwbrown1978's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Thank you for the very nice replies. A quick update.... Met with the surgeon on Friday 8/31. He said I was about 75% there already which was nice, but there were still a few things I needed to do before he could schedule my surgery date. I needed a x-ray of my chest, some blood work and schedule at least one appt. with a nutritionist, and have a psch/mental health eval done. Since yesterday was a holiday, I had to wait until this morning, but I have everything scheduled for this week and next week. Also my doctor called this morning and asked me to get a ultrasound. I was able to schedule that too. Whew! The pre-op diet consists of 7 day liquid Protein fast, which doesn't seem so bad. I have certainly done those in the past, so I don't think I will have too hard a time with that. Keep on keeping on..... -
I am a week and a half post op, and experiencing my first cravings: tomatoes, cucumbers, and carrots. To drink? Ice-cold fresh Water. I am, of course, still in liquids, but added yogurt this week. I really enjoy the Bariatric Pal Cream of chicken Soup as well. I never craved fresh vegetables before, so I could get used to craving something healthy!! I hope it's still what I crave layer when they are something I can eat.. Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-G900A using the BariatricPal App

Having A Weak Moment! Pull Me Back!
feszyk replied to fattymcfatterson's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Actually I am a believer in the mainly vegetarian lifestyle. There is a book (The China Study)- and an ongoing study- that is a result of 20-year partnership of Cornell University, Oxford University, and the Chinese Academy of Preventive Medicine. They have 20 years of empirical data showing a huge cross-section of lifestyles in Taiwan and many rural areas. Dr. Colin Campbell headed it up from the Cornell side. They have documented clinical data that shows that a diet consisting of less than 10% of Protein coming from animal sources (most notably casein) can actually arrest development in cancer in lab rats. The people with the lowest incidences of cancer are the rural farmers who A) cannot afford huge amounts of animal protein and B ) move their bodies rather than drive their cars everyday. Even rural places impacted by China's terrible pollution problem have shown a notable avoidance from cancer. Joel Fuhrman is another guy crusading for a more 'nutrative' vegetarian lifestyle. He is more toward the vegan side and is definitely worth checking out, but his program is very strict. His eating method has allowed diabetics to come off of insulin within the first three weeks. IMHO I believe that the days of eating rich foods all of the time is over for me. I am OK with that, I had a good run . I think it's OK to have meat and cheese, as long as it is on a weekly or biweekly basis rather than a daily basis. I am post-op now, and still relying daily upon yogurt and cheese and eggs and whey powders, and I suspect I will continue to be as I lose over the next 18 months, but the long term plan is to steer towards plant-based protein sources and integrate them to get myself to that <=10% protein animal intake level. -
i just started on my pre surg appt, too. i have 2 weeks before surgery. my dr. has me on a protein shake diet with a snack in between breakfast and lunch. my limit for the meals are 8oz only. the snacks can consist of jello (yuck), broth, clear juice, sugar free popsicles,& v8-splash, i have to say it is killing me, especially cooking for the family and not picking something up to eat. i am required to do at least 15 minutes of exercise a day. i also am anxious to start this journey and while waiting on insurance approval, put 5 # on in about 2 weeks, knowing i was doing so. i am forcing myself to follow the dr. orders, though, and imagining after a few days (praying actually) my body and MIND will become used to this new regimen. all i can say is the next 2 weeks can't go fast enough. i think you have to have enough confidence that the decision you made to have this surgery is the best one for you and your family. remembering the reasons to get the surgery and enforcing those memories in your weak moments should make it a little easier to watch what you are eating, control how much you eat, and begin playing with your children for at least a little bit, each day. these are things you're going to HAVE to do after the surgery for it to be successful, so might as well get started and get used to your new lifestyle now. good LUCK!

Concerns if not 100% Liquid diet 2-3 weeks before surgery?
Keepgoing247 replied to TexasBear in OZ's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
You will be fine! By losing the weight you have shrunk your liver which is why the Dr put you on the pre-op diet. Stick with the liquids for the next 3 days, follow your post op diet and you should be great! Keep us posted on your progress! -
So i just got the call confirming surgery dates for both my MIL and I and although we have dates set up we now await Insurance approval according to my doctors office we both should be fine with the insurance it just worries me because even though my BMI is 42 and i have PCOS and we both have hiatal hernias i keep having that thought that something will go wrong or that it won't be enough for the insurance to approve me =( They put me down for September 10th and my MIL will be on the 17th .....omggggg i am soooo nervous this is just around the corner so many thoughts and worries i just can't wait till its all over and done with my MIL in starting to talk like she wants to back out she wanted to try to cut through shortcuts and get out of her sleep apnea study and i kept telling her that even though i didn't have to have it done if the doc ordered it for her then its a must because i've read that it crucial for monitering her while in surgery if she does have it.....it's been such an emotional roller coaster between getting her appointments done and my own she doesn't speak english sooo i have to travel an hour to get both her appointments done and my own every time we have one sometimes i just wanna sit down in a corner and cry because its overwhelming its sooo much between all the appointments for both, homeschooling my babies 3 of them they start school tomorrow and church my husband and i are pastors =) sooo yeah got alot going on in my plate right now but at the same time am very excited! If anyone can tell me if a BMI of 42 and PCOS got them approved i'd greatly appreciate you sharing your story i know most likely it will be different insurances i just wanna have know if there is hope that i'll get approved? Thanks ya'll my prayers and best wishes to all September sleevers and upcoming as well

Just got my surgery date of July 20th.. Reality if it hasn't set in yet. When does it get real? What should I expect pre-operatively? I read surgery can lead to hair loss? Maybe I should spend a week reading everyone's posts and think about this...

You just made cry. You can never be terrible when are trying to take control of your health. So get that right out of your head! I've only told my immediate family and there are range of emotions and opinions I get from them. Mostly it's worry and concern of the unknown. So I gauged each persons reaction and for those who seem interested in knowing what's it all about; I shared the high lights of my 3 years of research, and they get it. With my husband and daughter I've educating them every step of way and they are optimistic but at the same time they keep the risks involved in the back of their minds. I never asked, but mom and my sis offered to come to lighten my household load and help me focus 100% on recovery(which doesn't include lying on my butt all day...lol). I do however have another sister and brother in law who don't support me and just yesterday they noticed i lost some weight, i explained it was do to the pre op diet and their like "you see you can do it by yourself just keep doing what your doing". I'm like "are you kidding me I am practically starving myself and if I don't keep myself distracted I could eat one of my own arms off". Lol, then I said "besides you guys know every time I get on a diet I always cheat". My brother in law straight flat out said "by doing that sleeve thing you are cheating". At that point I just walked away and said sarcastically "ok thank you for your support". He later apologized. So do what you must to get healthy just prepare for some not to be on board. Good luck and good health to you.

So did the pulminology test Tuesday. Was supposed to meet with NUT today so the insurance could be submitted next week. Well I guess there was an error on my pulminology results and they need to retest. So hope I can get that done soon. I had set up my NUT appointment a few weeks ago and I was told it was today at 11:30. I showed up at 11:20 and the receptionist told me I didn't have an appointment set up for today. She said they scheduled me for September 28th. What??? So the receptionist squeezed me in in Tuesday. I just want these tests done already! :-( Little things that have been so aggravating.
