Anyone for August 2020
Camillia replied to MotivatedMomma's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I am scheduled for gastric bypass on August 18 -
I have been riding my bike as apart of my workout routine since COVID hit. I was wondering how soon after gastric bypass surgery are you allowed to start working out again.

Now the Doctor Thinks a Sleeve Would be Better Then a Bypass.
tarotcardreader replied to Hope to Resolve's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I didnt ever have band and the surgeon pretty much laughed about the statistical data on band being bad and it is. GERD could get worse w sleeve. You could develop it permanently. Bypass is the gold standard for the diabetes resolving! I do want to say here that we dont know all your micro deets that your doctor does that might influence their suggestion. I’d suggest a second opinion on the side from another surgeon instead of the internet so they can really review your stuff. Bypass has an ulcer issue which may be why they r pushing sleeve but ppi can help w prevention. Get another surgeon opinion if unsure is best advice -
Now the Doctor Thinks a Sleeve Would be Better Then a Bypass.
Hope to Resolve posted a topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Below is an edited version from 3 weeks ago when I was conceivably talking about getting a bypass with the medical group. Now the Doctor Thinks a Sleeve Would be Better Then a Bypass. With battling weight most of my life 10 years ago I got a lap band put in. I am now 57 years old, 15 years ago I was diagnosed with type two diabetes At the time my Lap Band was put in my weight was 230 pounds. That might not sound like a lot of weight but for a male 5’8 it was a lot for me. In addition to having type two diabetes I have also had two neck surgeries and three back surgeries over the years. The Lap Band gave me significant weight loss. I got down from 230 to 160-165. I also lowered my Metformin from 1000 mg to 500 mg. I lost approximately 70 pounds of weight and maintained this weight for about nine years. To say that it was an easy road for me would be lying, I was constantly having the band loosened tightened loose and tightened like being on a roller coaster. I had problems with the Lap Band being so tight that I was having major acid reflux problems. In addition to that I had some small ulcers around my esophagus next to my Lap Band. Last year I decided I had enough of this and had a lot of Fluid taken out of my band. The major acid reflex went away immediately however, I still have some ongoing small minor heartburn and a small cough because the Lap Band is still in place but a lot of the fluid has been taken out. Because of that removal of fluid I have gained back for the first time in 10 years 35 pounds. Now I am back up to taking the same amount of diabetic medicine Metformin 1000 mg because of the 35 pound weight gain. The bariatric center in Los Angeles is now recommending that I conceivably switch to a Sleeve. This decision is not completely final yet and the acid reflex problems I’ve had for so many years which only really developed soon after getting the Lap Band 10 years ago. As in all surgeries there are risk concerns for changing the body anatomy, any advice or opinions from anyone that has been down this same kind of road would be much appreciated. Thank you for your time and concern. Hopefully one day I can help someone else. -
Anyone for August 2020

I'm flying home today (had my operation on the 10th), other than a bit of an odd reaction to the anaesthetic it seems to have all gone fine. My surgeon said he would like to do a 120 cm (rather than the more standard 60 cm) bypass of my intestine.... not really sure why but I went along with it. Not eaten anything yet, just been on water. Tbh I am nervous about drinking too much in one go.... when will I be able to drink normally? -

@Repeatingthoughts and @Groovymommy! So happy to hear about your progress! The little milestones (like baggy clothes) are all going to add up to big milestones. Groovy, if I don’t have a 30 g protein shake per day I struggle to get my protein in. And I hate the taste of whey protein post-op as it tastes like rotten milk to me. Talked it over with my dietian friend today though, and it really does give the best bang for the space, so I drink it. 🤢 Also, if you haven’t been checking out the food before and after thread, you should. It has really inspired me to get creative with food. I do miss big meals and eating whatever sounded good (I am a major foodie with a bread addiction), but I just ate an amazingly satisfying salad with chicken. I want more because it tastes good, but I have that tell tale pressure at the back of my throat that says no more. If I get that “rock in the chest” feeling, I will be miserable until I puke it up. Yay me 🙄 Let’s just keep on keeping on, bypass buddies! -
Sleeve revision (re-sleeving)
Hopefulmommy44 replied to klwilliams's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
Does it really resolve IBS? I wasn't in the market for revision, but this would be worth it! Is there research on how it improves IBS? What is the recovery period? I had vsg in 2012, need to lose 80lbs to get back to goal...which I'm committed to seeing this through, but I'm just off of an IBS flare up, and it's horrible. -
I had a sleeve 7 years ago and lost 85 pounds over 6 months. I had no loose skin whatsoever, but I have regained the weight and I'm due to have a revision to a Mini Gastric Bypass in a few weeks. I'm curious to know if you are more likely to have loose skin after a revision for weight gain? I am also now 7 years older 🙂

Drive to Eat vs. Actual Hunger
WhatATool:-) posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
So I recently had gastric bypass and I’m recovering well. I haven’t been nauseous at all, one of the lucky ones. I haven’t felt hungry, but also haven’t felt full (still on liquids). But, I still have the drive to eat. I don’t think it’s necessarily emotional eating, because I’m feeling pretty stable and good right now. I just like food, and enjoy eating. It’s almost like I lost a hobby. I haven’t given in or anything, and it’s really not that bad. I’m trying to focus on my other interests, and I’m guessing that this will level out over time. But I’m curious, anyone else deal with something like this? Any tips?- 6 replies

Looking to connect with others who had bypass surgery in July and veterans
Kaylieghm posted a topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
I had bypass surgery on July 20th. It was nearly impossible to eat or drink when I transitioned to the purées stage. I have an appointment scheduled on August 24th for an X-ray with contrast die to see if there are any issues. I’m supposed to be transitioning to soft food in two weeks, which I’m excited about. I’ve been eating yogurt, low fat cottage cheese, protein shakes, low fat cream of mushroom soup, and retried beans. I was able to swallow scrambled eggs this morning. This is a lot harder than I thought it would be. How are you or have you been making it through the early stages after surgery? Any food ideas? -

Groovymommy replied to MaybeMeow's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hello my fellow bypassers! I hope everyone is doing well. I'm doing great in general, although I've been doing a lot of thinking and confronting some hard truths about myself, my relationship to food, my exercise habits (or maybe I should say LACK of exercise habits), etc. Firstly, my progress is GREAT. Almost two months and I've lost almost 40 pounds. All my clothes are now 1-2 sizes too big, which is pretty exciting. My weight hasn't been this low in YEARS, like maybe since before I had my daughter in 2006! I'm still obese of course, but damn! I feel so much better and I'm so excited about my progress. It's starting to feel REAL in a way it never has before. Very rewarding. I have not thrown up at all (knock on wood, etc.) but I have had a few episodes where I was close. This is usually a result of me being stupid and not chewing something well enough. I get a feeling like a rock in my chest, I feel nauseated, and then my mouth starts watering overtime? Ugh, it's triggering to even write about it. Sorry. On a related note, I find that I don't really enjoy food very much anymore. Even things that I do like, I can only eat a teeny-weeny amount. And my body's way of telling me I'm full is that "rock in the chest" feeling, which kind of sucks. So it's hard to enjoy something I'm eating knowing that as soon as I'm full I'm going to get that unpleasant feeling. Realizing this has me thinking a lot about my relationship to food, and how obsessed with it I used to be. I guess at this point I should be talking to a therapist or going to group therapy or something, but you know - Covid-19 has screwed up everything! So instead I journal and rant here. 😆 And exercise, ugh. I still don't like it, but I'm trying. My energy level is not terrible, but not great either. I get tired really quickly. I'm certainly not getting enough protein (I am TRYING, but damn). Also my left shoulder is frozen and it hurts like an SOB but as far as I know I'm still not allowed to take the only thing that helps with that, which is ibuprofen. So yeah, poor me, huh? Haha j/k. Taking my vitamins? Yes. Taking my calcium? Um...yes, but most days only 2/3. Getting enough water/liquids? I'm probably getting about 70% of what I should. Getting enough protein? See above, again, about 70%. Exercising? Hahahahahahahah....does walking the dog count? How about the rest of you? -
GERD before surgery advice
mcfluffington replied to AchieveGoals's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I heard that a lot of people get the bypass to help with GERD. When I had the bypass I had no trouble with GERD. Now that I have gastric sleeve I have a problem with it. though it is mostly taken care of with Nexium or Prilosec. -
MGB or RNY? Can't decide
Tralynn222 replied to Loriey's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
I don't think you'll be disappointed with your decision. I had the revision from the Band to MGB in Dec of last year and couldn't be happier. I had the band for 12 years and never lost any weight. Now, since having the MGB I've lost 83 lbs in 7 months. I always hated how the band felt when I ate, now I just feel full. It's not painful or aggravating like that band was. Good Luck to you! -
MGB or RNY? Can't decide
Photo925 replied to Loriey's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
I think this has to be a personal decision, but I had a sleeve first then was advised to have a revision to MGB. Since I struggle with the worst reflux of my life. Dr's just referred me for a secondary revision to RNY and said that is what I should have done in the first place. After my sleeve, reflux was marginal, but after MGB its intolerable. I've had 5 EGD's and 2 Bravo tests and a countless number of different meds to get to the point they would refer me for the RNY and I've wasted years feeling horrible (mind you some of the problems I've experienced had more to do with the California health care system). So I know different things work for different people, but that was just my experience. -
GERD before surgery advice
Lanie992 replied to AchieveGoals's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
My GERD got better with the sleeve, but I had a hiatal hernia repair ---which I think was the cause of my pre-surgery GERD. But just from reading here - seems like a lot of sleevers do develop GERD after surgery and some subsequently get bypass to help relieve it. -
GERD before surgery advice
NovaLuna replied to AchieveGoals's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
My surgery has a sleeved stomach and while I don't have GERD I have EOS (a.k.a EOE: Eosinophilic Esophagitus) which causes acid issue at night. I used to have to take two acid reducers at night, but after my surgery I only need to take 1. I was surprised by that as I actually thought it'd get worse... So while acid issues do tend to get worse for most people who have VSG (or DS or Loop DS), I think there are also a rare few who it improves upon. At least that's what I've taken from my own experience. In the end it comes down to whether you're willing to take the risk that you may have to end up having to have a revision because it makes your GERD worse. -
Revision due to Reflux and scared!!
Jdymitc replied to bajankat's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
I had a sleeve done in July 2019 couldn’t keep anything down due to newly developed gerd (never had an issue prior). Lost so much weight in the first 3 months (100+ lbs). Had to have a pic line put in to get my nutrition levels up to where it was safe to operate on me again). Had a revision to gastric bypass in February 2020. Since then I’ve had 3 instances of vomiting but the first was what I assume was leftover acid because that happened still in hospital after revision. The second and 3rd times were my own fault drinking to quickly after eating. I also had a hernia repair at the time of my revision. I originally wanted the bypass but my team talked me into doing the sleeve as my insurance requirements were easier to get approved with the sleeve. I will say I am very thankful I had the revision done and am feeling much happier and healthier now in the 13 months since my original surgery I’ve gone from 350+ to 175 and from 4x pants to a pair of large today. I worried after the horrible outcome from the original surgery that I might be making a mistake having the revision but today am very happy I did. -
How long is the "honemoon" phase for sleeve? Talk to me about transitioning out?

Bypass here but results are very similar between the 2. My weight fell off very quickly for the first 6 months and hit maintenance at 8 months. Lost all my excess weight.. -

July 2020 Surgery anyone?
Motivated54 replied to IWantTheDream's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Day 15 after gastric bypass. Just ate cream of chicken soup as phase two liquids. It was amazing! Lol. Never thought I would be so excited to eat something so simple. Also hit 40lbs lost since pre-op diet and walking 4-5 miles a day. I’m so glad that this surgery came in to my life. I’m a bit concerned on how mushy and solids will go but so far so good. I’ll take it! Hope everyone is well and I appreciate all the posts. It really helps navigate the journey. -
Stop vitamin before annual lab test?
2Bsmaller18 posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I am due to have my annual labs done. No issues in the past or currently. I do take the high dose vitamin that my doctor recommends for bypass patients. Did anyone stop their vitamin before their labs? for 24 hour? longer? Thanks, -
Revision due to Reflux and scared!!
Foxbins replied to bajankat's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
I had a sleeve to RNY revision for GERD. I did not have reflux before my sleeve, developed it a couple of years later. I was on the maximum dosage of omeprazole (80mg) for a few years and still had breakthrough acid, which gave me an esophageal stricture. I regurgitated everything I swallowed. Still, I didn't want RNY, so I found a surgeon who was willing to explore alternative surgeries with me. However, after a bunch more testing that uncovered some previously unknown issues, I decided on RNY. Had the surgery on 6/29. I had one episode of reflux two days after surgery, I figured it was the last bits of acid in my stomach trying to make me miserable one last time. No acid since. No regurgitation. No vomiting. It has been a massive relief not to wake up in the middle of the night with acid in my mouth or throat. I am really pleased with the RNY so far.
