    Too much or too little?

@tjgillman : first, congrats on all your hard work and weight loss! Though you may not think it, but a 100lbs (45kg) weight loss in 10 months is NOT slow. It is average to above average. Second, based on your height, weight, gender & daily activity, at a very high level, in order to lose weight you need to be taking in roughly LESS than 1800 cals a day (I got to this very general number using the calculator at https://www.ruled.me/keto-calculator/) Sooooooo.... if you are averaging 1300 cals a day, weight loss at this time for you will be relatively "slow" compared to before, when you were bigger Doing the math: it takes a calorie deficit from of at least 3500 to lose a lb. based on your stats, you need to get below 1800 to lose weight. you are taking in 1300 which means: every day, you have a deficit of 500 cals. sooooo... that means it will take you 7 days to lose one pound (3500/500) IF you are in fact taking in 1300 cals and are moderately active EVERY DAY. If you want to speed up weight loss, you'll need to create a bigger calorie deficit (which does NOT mean eating more nor exercising less) Good Luck! ...and again congrats on the weight loss, you are doing great!

8 Years Post OP - Weight Gain

My weight loss calories seem to be different as I progressed out from surgery. Calculators don't wok for me. My calorie zone is less. I don't eat Keto - I am back on baritric basic diet to get the weight off. I'm further out from surgery. I can eat more food. If I stay in my weight loss calories,I lose weight. I logged in a food app to find my weight loss calorie zone. Some log food consistently to get the weight off. Others can guess if they are in weight loss range. I was gaining when I guessed. None of this is a one size fits all to get the weight back down. Find what works for you.

VSG Regain 6 Years Post Op

It seems to be pretty common for people to be active on forums (and in post-op support groups for that matter) for a year or two and then disappear. They've just moved on with their lives and don't feel like they really need it anymore, I guess. I stick around because it keeps my head in the game - and there are a few of us still around here, I'm guessing for the same reason - but most people do disappear after awhile. And not just on this forum - I've seen it on others and....as I mentioned...in post-op in-person support groups, too. I'm battling with losing a 10-lb gain. I've always monitored myself really closely (weighed myself several times a week and track every bite of food that I eat), so I just cut back on calories by about 200/day and increased my exercise. It works, but it's S-L-O-W going. But then, I'm 4 lbs overweight (according to the BMI charts), so I wasn't expecting any huge, quick drops. One-two lbs a month was about what I expected - unless I was willing to drop to sub-1000 calories or something, which I wasn't... regain once you're a few years out is pretty common. The trick is to catch it and deal with it before it gets out of hand. There are some vets who've had success with programs such as WW, Keto, and IF - so you could always try one of those if your current method isn't doing the trick. Lots of people have managed to re-lose their regains, so it can be done!
  4. I am 3 months out from RNY surgery and have lost about 45lbs , the weight has been slow moving this past month and I work out 7 days a week, I do a full mix of cardio , weight lifting and yoga/Pilates / barre and follow a Keto or Lazy Keto diet. Depression , anxiety, sleeplessness , restlessness and anger have been a constant no matter how much I keep my endorphins up. Is this normal? Is it normal to look in the mirror or photos and still be angry and upset with what you see? Are the mood swings 3 months out still normal? I’m disgusted and saddened by what is looking back at me and I am critiquing myself harder than before when I was 200lbs , 154lbs just doesn’t feel like the progress I was hoping g for at 3 months and I feel like no matter how hard I work out I am not seeing the muscles or definition in my body , all I see is saggy skin , bingo arms and cellulite. I just want to know am I the only that has felt or feels this way ?

    Bacon....

Are you a dietician? Not sure why you are telling people what they should or should not eat when a lot of bariatric patients are successful with Keto, which is high fat. I wouldn't do it, but I wouldn't tell people not to either.
  6. I think you are right, that you need to start keeping track of your calorie intake....it will give you a better idea of how much you should be eating to lose weight. Take a look at this calculator and input your data and it will give you a general sense of what calorie level you should be at to lose weight: https://www.ruled.me/keto-calculator/ There are many other calculators out there, this just happen to be the one I used. Good Luck!
  7. Dietician had me on keto for a couple of weeks before surgery. My surgeon puts all his patients on a pre-surgery diet to reduce fat around the liver & give him a clearer line of sight during surgery. He put my friend, with a much higher starting BMI than me, on a protein shake diet pre surgery. Maybe too lose a little more pre surgery???

KETO NO GO = You are getting healthy not inducing fats - Plus you can not stay on that you need to get a well balanced diet of healthy foods/

    Diet questions

Depends on what keto you do. I did a version that was low carb, high protein, moderate fat. You want your body to burn your fat stores, not the fat you are eating. Plans that advocate for eating fatbombs and pouring cream and coconut oil on everything are the ones you want to avoid. You go into ketosis due to a lack of carbs, not an excess of fat. So keto for me is a lot closer to a normal healthy diet, lots of vegetables and protein and limited processed carbs. Depends if you want to count macros as well. I never did.

    Diet questions

Keto tends to be high in fat and high in calories, the exact opposite of what the doctor wants you to do. Admittedly, it's low carb, but everything else isn't good. Also, Keto tends to work best for short periods anyway. It 'shocks' the body into working a different way. But once your body gets used to it the weight doesn't fall off like it does in the beginning. Also, most Keto dieters only eat once a day. That's not good for bariatric patients! I know a few people who do Keto so I'm basing what I know about it off of them and once they go off the Keto diet... the weight comes back. With interest. It's not worth it.

I had the sleeve done in November. I still struggle with handling certain foods. Has anyone tried the keto diet since have bariatrics done?! I thought about trying it. Sent from my moto g(7) supra using BariatricPal mobile app

    Bacon....

@BayouGirlMrsS this sounds like a well balanced plan! Thanks for sharing. I have an appointment with my nutritionist in May and I am going to discuss coming up with a plan that works for ME! Researching online, it seems like a lot of people implement their own plans because I see a variety of Keto, IF, counting macros. I haven’t tried the yogurt you mentioned but I will. I either buy Dannon Light and Fit or Chobani.

    Bacon....

This is just my opinion.... the little amount of Bacon/sausage you will be able to eat, won't make that much of a difference. Yes it's high in fat, but you are only eating maybe one-piece... I would eat the meat before i would eat the potatoes..... lots of dr. put there WLS pt on a high fat, low carb diet... Kinda like Keto. I don't, i stick mostly to portion size. I stick to 1/8 cup of protein, 1/8 cup veggie 1/8 cup of "other". Breakfast is coffee and normally a breakfast bar. I like the Special K Pastry Crisps during the weekdays. On Sat/Sun my husband is normally home and i cook. Me: coffee and a 1/4 piece of Daves Good seed bread toasted well. Or one egg (fried), 1/4 piece of bacon and 1/4 piece of toast...(i never finish this). Lunch is tuna salad, egg salad, chicken salad, left overs from the night before... if not to dry. Chili, baked sweet potato... Dinner is fish, steak, chicken.... with a veggie... Green beans, baby peas, baked S/potato,
  14. Hey Guys, I just found this site after a hopeful search looking for someone who has or is going through something similar. I had RNY with a Minimizer Ring on the 18th of February 2020. I am 43 and 5ft 9In. My surgery weight was 296 pounds and I am now 238 pounds. A loss of 58 pounds so far. I had been planning/researching the surgery for 5 years and after my last failed attempt of maintaining, went ahead with surgery with full knowledge of what to expect (well so I thought). For full disclosure, my weight problems I think were based on years of yo-yo dieting. Mainly extreme calorie cutting and exercise to get to normal weight. However, when off the ‘diet wagon’ I would only eat a huge meal once a day after not eating all day and being starving when I got home. Usually meals were very much carb based with heavy sauces. I would eat normally on the weekend, but overly big portion sizes. I am not a sweet tooth or an emotional eater, nor am I a fussy eater. I also loved coke zero, which I have just found out is apparently a trickster. Anyways, I think I ruined my metabolism and losing weight was no longer working like it used to! What I expected: · 5-10 days of a keto kind of flu whilst my body adjusted to fat burning mode · Minimal appetite, but still some kind of signal I needed to eat · Being easily satiated with small amounts of food · Having to chew my food 20-30 times · No water 30 mins before or 60 mins after food · Protein first, avoid simple carbs What I did not expect · Persistent nausea · Aversions to all meat/poultry/fish and eggs (physically make me heave) and other random things (sour cream, mushrooms, pumpkin soup, cheese that has been grilled) · Complete and utter exhaustion to the point where my personal hygiene is embarrassing because sometimes I can’t muster enough energy to have a shower for days · Dumping sometimes trying food for the first time, sometimes after having food that did not make me dump last time (for me it is sweating, heart racing, severe cramps and diarrhoea within 30 mins of eating) · Being so uncomfortably full even if it is just water, or a couple of tiny bites of food. I get less than 1000 calories in a week · That chewing the food so many times would make most foods unpalatable and having to spit it out or throw up · The amount of times I belch, heave and bring up thick saliva……all day…..its disgusting and embarrassing! I had read many stories before the surgery, some positive and some negative and was always quick to judge people thinking they were just negative Nancy’s or hypochondriacs and like attention. So it hard to write this post knowing a lot of people will think what I did. I have had scans with contrasts and there are no issues. I have been hospitalised for dehydration, low potassium and high blood ketones. Ketones are normal due to weigh loss. Dehydration and potassium easily fixed with IV fluid. I have a gastroscope tomorrow morning to check if there is scar tissue etc causing my issues. BUT WHAT IF THEY FIND NOTHING???? WILL THIS BE MY FOREVER??? HAS ANYONE DEALT WITH ANYTHING SIMILAR OR IS IT JUST MY BODY FREAKING OUT AND TAKING LONGER THAN NORMAL TO ADJUST? Thanks if you read this far, it really means a lot. I would love to hear from you. I am open to all feedback. Best, Laura (Alice Springs, Australia)
  15. Do you know how much they want you to lose? PCOS is usually looked at as a comorbidity. Metformin did absolutely nothing for my PCOS and I slowly gained over the years. Keto did help me lose around 10lbs, but as soon as I stopped Keto I gained it back. Before my surgery I lost 11lbs by the pre-op diet that was basically Protein shake in morning and at lunch, sugar free jello or pudding between that when I got hungry and one healthy dinner like a salad. For two weeks. It sucks and not something recommend for long term, but if there is a certain lb'age they are wanting you to lose before they approve you that might help. I'm lucky and my insurance didn't require any weight loss and I was at a 40bmi so I didn't need any comorbidities to get me approved. I am 8months post op and have lost 74lbs! So this surgery does work for us PCOS girls. Unfortunately it only worked on the weight loss. I still have hair growth thanks to PCOS and my periods are still wonky too. Good luck on your journey!

    Scared about hunger

I have felt hunger since having the surgery. I also have gastric reflux which I think makes it feel more pronounced but I am losing so I am happy with my progress. It is all so odd because it is not like anything I have ever experienced. I read what is posted but know that our experiences may be different. I am trying to find the right balance because I do want bread, rice and pasta and I have tasted it so I know I can eat it but I dońt want to undo my progress so I found thejoeduff on YouTube and he has a lot of great keto recipes. I learned to make toast and some pancakes. The funny thing is that now my kids eat MY leftovers and it used to be the other way around! So usually my first meal of the day goes down rough and Ím burping and its all so noisy. I also find I get hungry later in the day. I was doing IF before the surgery so I dońt know if I became used to eating more later in the day in that window of time. Anyway, my point is for me this has been a lot of trial and error. Someone posted earlier to practice mindfulness and to listen to your body which I think is the best way to approach it. If something doesn’t feel right, listen to the cues and monitor what you can. If you get off track, forgive yourself and get back on. Wishing everyone health during the difficult time!
  17. I have PCOS as well and am also on Metformin. It's honestly disgusting how little I have to eat in order to lose weight. Metformin helps me maintain weight, so long as I am eating healthy. However, to lose weight, the best thing I can recommend is keto. Check out the keto subreddit, find out what your daily intake should be, and give it a try. I have lost quite a bit of weight following that alone. I do gain quite a bit of water weight once I stop keto, though, so keep that in mind.
  18. Arabesque, You are describing my journey! Low BP, low blood sugar, most of the time, light headed, lose my balance easily. Drinking Propel and other sugar free electrolyte replacement, making sure I have frequent small “meals”. Fortunately, hubby goes out walking with me because I’m afraid I could pass out! This is why I was never able to do Keto pre-op. I guess some of us are just predisposed to these issues. Thanks, and I do hope things have gotten better for you? Please tell me it goes away? I’m so light headed, I think it officially makes me an airhead Lol.

    January 2020 Surgery Folks

Sorry to hear about your trip, I hope you guys at least got to hop on the phone together. I've been staying connected with zoom meetings, had my whole family on this Sunday and it was great to see their faces. I'm in Maryland so the shelter in place order came just yesterday. Fortunately, as a dog walker, I can still get out everyday to serve those clients who have essential roles, so that's helped a lot. I cannot get all my protein from food. I'm still drinking a shake everyday. I'm also a big fan of keto, so while I'm focused on protein, I'm not shying away from full fat cheese(don't tell on me). I've had almost no veggies!!! I miss them so much, but I just have no room. I'm in a stall at the moment, only lost .4lbs this week. So annoying, but hoping to see the results in my measurements which im terrible at taking. Also feeling lucky I had surgery before all of this or I'd be mostly binge eating while stuck at home. I'd totally take .4 down than 10-20 up, so silver linings I guess.

    January 2020 Surgery Folks

Sick of lockdown/quarantine/shelter in place that's for sure. Been doing nothing but walking around neighborhood or riding bike, quick grocery store trips maybe once a week. Been home since March 13th, orders for California where I live are to continue this until May 3rd. 😭 Today is the 3rd anniversary of my mom's passing and I'm suppose to be with my sister. But no traveling, had to cancel my flights to see her. I physically can't eat more than about 3 1/2 ounces of food which is super helpful because I think I would totally be gaining weight if I could eat more. I've been doing "very well" with my hydration as I track like I'm on crack every ounce of fluid going into my body and usually hitting about 70 ounces. I was on a keto diet prior to doing WLS and have pretty much continued that but more protein then fat diet, but not very many veggies. How do people fit in veggies when protein is your main objective? The struggle is real. Also how to get in so much protein besides drinking it when we have to wait 15-20 minutes before and after eating to drink again and we need so much liquid. It's like there are not enough hours in the day. I know I'm crazy spiraling sorry. As for weight loss, gosh I feel like I should weigh less by now. I mean I exercise regularly and I eat/drink less than 800 calories a day and my active calories per day are anywhere from 800-1200. Total calories burned daily like 3000-4600. The math just doesn't seem to add up to me 🤷🏼‍♀️ I miss hugs 🤗 I am an extrovert and this being cooped up is killing me.

    Stalling for TWO MONTHS.

What does your nutritionist/surgeon want you to have? Your carbs are higher than most people's teams would suggest (so early on- I can eat around that much almost 3 yrs out to maintain my weight/indulge) so that may not work for you right now. But the bottom line is sometimes the professionals recommendations along with trial & error will work better than anecdotal info from a peer. If you were tracking during the time you were consuming 800 vs 1200 cals check the trends in your weightloss. Then talk to your team. Try lower or Keto level macros for carbs, after consulting with your team of course, and see if there is any difference after about 2 weeks. Good Luck ❤

Help! Craving Pancakes 4 weeks out!!

Google "Keto Pancake Mix" and you'll find lots of companies that sell keto friendly pancake mix. I can't vouch for how they taste, but they might help your cravings...
  23. My surgery was canceled on Wednesday after a week on the all liquid diet. So frustrating! But those soft scrambled eggs and keto toast as a first meal? Sooo good. It's frustrating when there are so few cases in my county but I know it's more about the supplies and concern of a future surge than the current situation. I'm hoping the hospital will reassess on Apr. 1 like the other hospital system in my area, but for now Peacehealth's stance is "indefinitely". This is hard as I work with special education students as a paraeducator and I am trying to also work with my teacher to figure out how we can support our 26 kids from a distance in April... when I would also hope to have surgery instead. This would have been so much easier if life had not gone insane for us all! Upside, I am very techy and she is very supportive. We collaborate well on curriculum and a lot of what we use I've put online or in our Google drives. Downside, I have 15 kids from multiple classes who need reading/writing support alone through 3rd, 4th, and 5th grades and 5 more who need early literacy and math supports at all different skill levels between K and 2nd. And I have an 8th grader and 10th grader of my own at home to support. I worry so much for our most vulnerable kids and am really having to consider putting off my surgery until the end of June.

    Keto Rash

Post op Dec 2015 gained back 35 pounds. Went on the Keto diet. Was excited and lost 12 pounds in a few weeks. Then Boom this rash sent straight from satan himself! I’m like what is this? Immediately i started putting like hydrocortisone creme and taking benadryl. I got off the diet. Here is pics. I sit at the dermatologist right now seeking answers doing blood work and urine samples when I really feel like this is a keto rash but i want it to go away. Then i will just go back to my shakes and salad greens. Jesus this itch is horrible! Does anyone have this or have got rid of it? Does it have to do with us being through bariatric surgery?
  25. Well said. When I had my first surgery and was finally eating regular foods I focused on carbs and protein and let the fat macros fall where they lay (probably around 40-50g per day, but I did eat a lot of cheese ). The other day I was going through all the books I had related to eating, weight loss, keto, and bariatric surgery and came across the Pound of Cure book by Dr. Weiner (who has great videos on YouTube as well). I know I read some of it, but I'll definitely have to reread it for when I'm past all the post-op stages and into eating regular meals. The problem for me in Japan is that there is a very limited variety of vegetables here, many of which are hard for me to eat due to some gastrointestinal issues I have unrelated to my gastric surgeries, and anything not local tends to be very pricey, so it limits my options. Honestly, when I go to other countries (US, Canada, Europe), I feel like crying when I go to the supermarket and see all the amazing fruits and vegetables available that I just can't get in Japan, or in a limited way because they are so expensive ($3 a peach anyone? $2 for 3 spears of asparagus? $5 for 1/3pint of blueberries?). However, I'm sure I'll be able to figure something out. Note: for everyone who thinks Japanese food is healthy, most of it is carbs+protein, with very few vegetables. If you think of a bento box, half the box is rice, the other 40% tends to be meat or fish, and the remaining 10% is vegetables, usually pickled. A traditional breakfast may have miso soup with tofu (healthy, lots of protein), rice, and fish. Or rice porridge. Many people just eat toast, or maybe eggs. Lunch and/or dinner might be something like curry rice, or fried chicken and rice, or ramen, or whatever. Few to no veggies. When I ask my students how many vegetables they eat per day, the vast majority of them don't eat any, although to be fair, they are university students (this is usually part of a larger discussion of what it means to be healthy - just because people are thin, doesn't mean they are healthy, and vice versa). People doing keto, or who are vegetarian (or worse, vegan, since so many things are made with fish stock) really struggle when travelling here to find enough healthy foods for them to eat.
