    5 years post op

Thanks! I do eat a range of things but honestly I make a lot of substitutions when possible like: regular bread when eating out but always keto bread at home (never was going to give bread up), regular fries when out vs airfryer fries at home, and yesterday I ate grilled chicken tenders vs fried tenders because the calories made more sense (even though I wanted the fried ones). Oh and I am dead serious about picking desserts over salads when the calories are on par 🤣 so I do watch calories (and sugar) more than what appears to be the “healthier” choice.
  2. I wouldn't have the required amount of fat. But keto foods being mainly protein and veggies would work. Sent from my Vivo 5R using BariatricPal mobile app

Any 2016 Type 1s out there?

I'm T1 on an insulin pump and got sleeved about 2 years ago. Was good for about a year, lost quite a bit and had energy and then my fibro got really bad and stopped working out, started eating crap again so gained a bit back. Started a keto diet a couple of weeks ago and that's helping, but I've cut down on my insulin quite a bit but still taking glucophage. I guess the sleeve is still good bc it limits how much i can eat otherwise would have gained more back. When i went for surgery though had to get off the pump and they didn't know how to control my bs so i was a mess (went to TJ for my surgery).
  4. Thank you. I can't help but be depressed. There are other things going on in my life (work & family) that are contributing factors, so this mess with my stall & my hair doesn't help. I feel like if I had a full head of hair (which was thin & fine, to begin with!) and was continuing to lose weight, it might help and feel like progress. I'm trying to stick to things as best as I can, but when the surgical staff says "stop snacking, only eat meals", it's hard! I just can't do it. I get stomachaches easily and do better with frequent snacks. I'm pretty much on a keto diet as it is. I just hope this stall breaks quickly... I have 50lb to go to get to my goal. Even if I don't fully reach it, I want to get close.

2 Years Post OP and struggling

Start today! Procrastination, giving up and excuses will not burn calories or help you lose weight. Give yourself some tough. Love you don't want a small gain to turn into a large gain. Join a weight loss challenge to keep you on track. Some on this site or google them. If your not logging your food. Get back in the habit again. You have lost the weight before you can do it again. Years out, we can get a bit complacent or slip back into old behaviors. I'm four years out I've also had to lose a regain. It's work. It's the same work we put in our first year. It may mean overcoming some mental battles to get back into your weight loss mojo. Pouch reset or real food? Some people can go back to liquids and progress in food stages. Shakes never make me feel satisfied. If liquids are too restrictive for you, Choose a whole/real food diet that you can be consistent with. If you can't consume your weight loss calorie/macro goals, spread them out to five to six small meals. Log your food. Accept the you will feel crappy for a bit as you detox. Get temptations out of your house. Keep health sweet and salty options on hand. (IDK much about keto. I'm sure others can give you better options) Examples that I use Sweet: fruit, can dip it in sugar free chocolate or caramel syrup. Salty: I make chicken fajitas without a tortilla or eat jerky. The best workout is the one you will be consistent with. A trainer or on your own with a gym membership. Whatever works for you.
  6. I agree with this totally. Many of us have experienced regain and lost the regain by getting our heads right again. It's easy to fall off track after some time and almost forget that you are a WLS patient, but that should always be part of who you are! The only true way to know if there's stretch is to have an EGD or a barium swallow. Most bariatric surgeons will tell you that a sleeve can't truly stretch because of the basic muscle type involved. I went back to my NUT, went back to the psychiatrist, went full on Keto and lost my regain. For ME, It was really about getting out of my own head, finding what I know works, and getting back to work.

    Liver Shrink diet

I'm 3 weeks post op now, in the puréed stage of my diet. I will kind of be honest with regards to boredom of foods. You need to prepare yourself to be bored with food after the first few weeks of surgery. You will only be able to eat a few things, and you are lucky if those are things you enjoy eating. During this time, try finding liquids you enjoy and plan on eating those for days at a time. During the first 2 weeks there aren't many options. I found eating the broth from a Vietnamese restaurant was way better than broth from a box or can. I had planned on Jello after surgery because I enjoy it, but even the sugar free caused me to have dumping. The Protein shakes were too thick and didn't settle well on my stomach so I chose GENEPRO as a protein replacement because it's unflavored and can be mixed in anything. Try to prepare for boredom because I wasn't and it hit me hard. I'm doing as little carbs as possible (keto diet) so I cut all carbs from my diet during my liver shrink diet. I had tons of grilled chicken and veggies, spinach and chicken salads (chick filet has amazing salads), lean beef kabobs, and tuna salad. I also tried many egg dishes because that's my go to protein with avocado for breakfasts. If I craved carbs I would eat protein. I don't know why but it helped. Also jello with whip cream was amazing before surgery when I could still eat it. I've not craved carbs or Coke one time since surgery and I think it's because I already went through those struggles during pre-op. Good luck and I hope that helps some. 8. Thanks guys! I hope you are all right! haha! @Berry78 Gosh I your reasoning and math skills too! IKR on the fat and so little makes so many cals! I often used to look at people who were doing keto and some of the young ones were adding fat EVERYWHERE! And I'm like, you know, you really don't have to do that...cuz you're gonna hit keto numbers just by the fat in the meat, nuts, and dairy.
  9. Well, keep in mind that many of them are aiming for 1800 or 2000 calories.. which means adding another 8 TABLESPOONS of added fat! Lol! Yum.. keto sounds delicious! Fat is my favorite.. .... .... at least always used to be... Hmm.. on second thought, I don't think it's as good anymore... I don't DISlike it.. I just don't crave it. (Guess I'm still transitioning my brain to the then/now.) Btw..For the sake of accuracy.. I attributed all the calories in nuts to fat. Nuts also have some protein and carbs, so just wanted to point out that my numbers are just rough estimates.
  10. I've been doing Keto WOL for past 15 months in preparation for losing weight prior to pursuing bariatric surgery and also seeking relief from inflammation - which doing Keto has helped me with greatly. I probably won't have my weight loss surgery until the end of June or the beginning of July and am trying to get started on taking vitamins/supplements to meet my body's needs that I feel are being missed right now. I also want to head off/reduce the chances of massive amounts of hair loss. I noticed my hair is thinning - I'm on a blood thinner which causes hair loss and I've hit menopause which also causes hair loss so I've been VERY stressed over this. Then I think about how much hair loss I've seen in ppl who have had WLS although my nutritionist said most hair loss was from not getting adequate amounts of protein each day (min of 80 grams she said). My surgeon gave me a pamphlet for Bariatric Advantage vitamins but it is a bit confusing as I haven't had weight loss surgery yet, but I need to bolster my intake of QUALITY vitamins/supplements. If anyone has any recommendations for what would be a good vitamin regimen PRE-SURGERY, I'd greatly appreciate it! I know I need extra calcium and vitamin D in a bad way as well. I appreciate any help you can provide!!
  11. Hello! My name is Taylor and I am 25 years old. I am 5' 4" and my weight fluctuates around 235-250. I've struggled with my weight since I was a pre-teen despite being active. My mother got gastric bypass (Roux-en-Y) about 10 years ago and has been very successful. I've tried many diets (WW, Profile by Sanford, Whole30, Keto, calorie counting) and nothing ever sticks and I always go back to my range weight of 235-245. I can never lose more than 20 pounds and always end up going back to the weight I've mentioned above. I would love to get this surgery sometime soon, and I am in the process of setting up a consult with a bariatric surgeon. I have a trip to Italy and Ireland for two weeks in September. And then my family and I are spending Christmas in Hawaii (Ive never been). Half of me wants to get the surgery sometime soon, before going to Europe to look and feel better so I can look back on this trip positively. On the other hand, my mom mentioned that I should wait until after Europe so I can enjoy the food (which Italy is known for). I could try to lose some weight before then, but then I dont think I would be eligible for surgery because my BMI would be lower. And I know I will just go back to my weight range eventually and go through the never ending cycle with my weight. Can anyone offer some advice? Any would be much appreciated! Thank you

I Pinterest a lot and found these noodles from a keto recipe. Not sure how they taste seeing that I'm only 2 weeks post op but they're good reviews. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App
  13. You know there is a difference between "ideal" and goal weight right? Just to nerd out on you, "ideal" weight is a very specific metric based on pretty archaic insurance charts. And for women (don't know for men), you use this formula to calculate it: 100lbs for the first 5 feet. 5lbs for every inch over 5 feet. So for me, a 5'4" woman of average build, I have a theoretical "ideal" weight of ABOUT 120lbs give or take. I asked my cardiologist if 120lbs was a reasonable goal. He said, he doubted very seriously if I could get there and that he didn't really think it is do-able for most people, not just me. But the wls peeps use ideal weight to calculate your theoretical expected weight loss for your type of surgery and they also compute a theoretical "goal range" for most of us--whether or not they are willing to disclose that information, they still calculate and track it for each of us. My theoretical goal based on my ideal weight and based on my surgery was 156lbs. My 1st goal for myself was 150lbs. Now I'm going for goal #2 140lbs which puts me slightly under the mark on a weight chart where I'm in "normal weight range". My goal #3 is to get to 130lbs. My doctors think I should be able to do that if I really apply myself. So even at 130lbs as a goal, and even though I'm a "normal weight" for a woman my size, and even though I will have met and exceeded the expected/targeted % of expected weight loss...I will still be 10lbs heavier than my "ideal weight." This morning I am 32% fat (different than BMI) by Tanita and that fluctuates wildly with hydration. I go from 26% fat in the afternoons to 32% fat in the mornings. So by that metric, I have about 47lbs of fat sitting on my frame. Of that 47lbs of fat, I have what "they" figure is 13-14lbs of ESSENTIAL fat. That's the fat I must have on my body to continue to live. We all have something like that amount of essential fat. So accordingly, I have about 47-14=33lbs of excess fat left to lose. I think I can lose about 20lbs, but the rest of that seems impossible. And losing 20lbs still doesn't get me down to my ideal weight. Can I maintain it? I believe I can as long as I take each day as a new chance to live healthy and eat my best and exercise. I too am low carb/defacto keto, and get only "adequate protein". I also eat very low glycemic foods and try to get my daily 20g of fiber into the mix. Sorry for the book. (Oh I'm nearly 12months out and have lost 140lbs from my recent high weight.)

Very cool! I haven’t had surgery yet so I’m looking for ideas to help lessen future hair loss and preserve skin elasticity. I’ve taken CP before as part of my keto diet, but I was going over on my protein macros too easily and decided to quit the CP to free up some room for actual food. I never gave it time to see any results from it so I think I’m going to add it back just to get ahead of the game. 👍🏼

    Pre-op doubts

One can fast and incorporate good fats with no problem. Many VSG patients are on the keto diet and/or intermittent fasting. Surgeons each have their own philosophy about diet after WLS and they vary drastically. The one I like the best is Dr. Duc Vuong (Ultimate Gastric Sleeve Success). I also love his YouTube channel. I'm currently reading Dr. Weiner's (Pound of Cure) so I can't remark on that one yet but others have but so far, it's really enlightening. https://www.amazon.com/Ultimate-Gastric-Sleeve-Success-Practical/dp/0615830447

    Long term success

You are right, its going to be up to me on the success of my weight loss future. I'm starting to look into the keto diet and the meal plan. I do know the dr I'm going too does not want you to eat red meat or pork for 1 year. I'm not sure I can go a year with out red meat lol.
  17. Yes I totally understand it can be very hard, I still struggle with what am i going to eat and half the time dont eat and then i get miserable. i guess its just a case of tasting things as see how you enjoy them. I have found also that one day i might really enjoy something and think yep I will have that again and then not like it the next time I try it. Maybe you could cook together there would be no harm in him eating better food you never know maybe he might loose a few pounds too. I know you said you dont like to cook but have a look on pinterest I searched meals for gastric sleeve and easy lunches for sleevers a lot came up, lots of keto foods came up as well they looked amazing and were food most people enjoy, it might give you some inspiration and I am sure your hubby would enjoy them too. I have found simple meals like a piece of steak and a few veggies or salad its quick and easy or chicken breast and that is stuff you could do for both of you or even your hubby could cook.

    So impatient

Believe me, done that, pretty much all of it. LOL I already drink a minimum of 120 oz of water a day (it's basically all I ever drink). I follow a low carb diet so my protein is already where it needs to be. I have two Pinterest boards full of bariatric and keto recipes (I hate to cook but my husband will cook for me). The only thing is diet soda (haven't had sugary soda in over 12 years), but I already gave up caffeine about a year ago and I've cut WAY down on my soda, so it'll come in time. The dietitian I saw on the 11th said I'm her favorite patient and that there isn't much more for me to be doing except learn to eat slower (I have 3 kids, if I don't eat fast my food goes cold lol). I just feel so ready, I want the surgery now, darn it! LOL
  19. My name is William Godfrey and I am a 21 year Army retiree. I currently work as a Culinary instructor and also part time at the Home Depot. My journey has been up and down with weight struggles since retiring. I quit HD back in 2017 to get my culinary degree and during that time I hit an all time high of 303 being 5'6". I've tried all the diets and the last was keto. Before retirement I got a disc fusion from my bulging discs and with this extra weight it just made the pain worse. Going through the VA, we tried just about everything until they told me that VA was authorizing gastric surgeries and doing that would help me release weight and pressure from my back. So here I am after almost 2 years of going through their program requirements, hold ups from COVID, and other issues...I received gastric sleeve surgery on 22 Feb and am now in the loser's club. I'm looking forward to longevity in life and less pain..moreover time with my kids and grandbaby.
  20. You can stay keto or low carb as your body is already adapted. Check out Ketogains website for info and to calculate Keto macros.
  21. Most of the popular fad diets over the years have some therapeutic basis - ketogenic diets are useful for epileptics, Atkins, etc. have long been used for diabetics and the insulin resistant (since long before Atkins, for that matter), gluten free is just the thing for those with Celiac disease (and some forms of non-Celiac gluten intolerance). It is when they cross the line to be promoted as all things to all people, and the latest "must diet" for weight loss that they enter the fad diet domain. So yes, keto is a fad for non-epileptics looking for the next weight loss miracle cure. The current low carb craze started with Atkins, and as the pendulum moved to greater extremes that not only are carbs bad, but fats are divine and one can't have enough of them. When the diet pendulum was last moving from low fat to low carb, courtesy of Atkins, the full fledged HFLC diets a la Paleo and keto were too extreme to be marketable at that time. From a long term weight loss perspective, these diets are no better than any other that has come and gone before (and will likely return again in time) - there is really nothing new in the weight loss business that hasn't been tried before and found wanting, often multiple times. In keeping with diet fashions, terminology becomes flexible, as those who need to be seen as doing the latest diet tend to adopt the term for whatever they are doing ("I have eliminated all fats/carbs from my diet - well, not those fats/carbs, those are the good ones....", " I'm doing XYZ diet except...") Your nutritionist's advice is sound - it is fine if you want to do that type of diet, as it isn't particularly harmful as long as one doesn't go overboard on the calories. That is the big benefit of your WLS - it doesn't care what kind of diet you use with it as it gives you this year of time, give or take, to get your dietary act together and learn what you need to do for the rest of your life. Most who go with the popular diet of the day run into diet fatigue and get lost when they never learned sustainable nutrition, or they jump to the next trendy diet when the current one becomes old. WLS gives one the chance to get off that merry-go-round if one is so inclined.
  22. I haven't ever had a surgery but in on Keto diet and intermittent fasting and I've lost almost 35lbs in 3 months. I love the food on this site, it's a little expensive but allows me to eat sweet stuff without the sugar. Anyways. I was wondering if anyone has had a tummy tuck or nose job and could recommend a good Dr in Connecticut that's good but not 1000000 dollars. Thanks
  23. I would say that these are very valid concerns, and one of the things that i struggled with in the past with weight loss, and it caused a lot of self sabotage— im working on it now with my therapist, and its a struggle. I don’t want to be noticed- and im my case, noticed for my body- and there are underlying factors that im working to uncover. My body is not something anyone should be commenting on- good or bad, imo. I would rather be noticed for something that is not fading, like a nice personality or a kind heart. Perhaps finding a counselor that has experience in body/weight loss issues would be beneficial. And you are safe here too- Im like you- I was self pay and having to come home to find resources like a counselor, dietician etc on my own. Build your team to support you, you deserve it. The hair loss was expected, as I had that when doing keto— it does turn around though, so keep up the faith there.

Speaking of fad diets ... everyone wants me to try the keto diet. Fad diets don't work - they come and go. The real success is actually with people that have used surgery as a tool. The keto diet ain't real good for you either - it's terribly high in fat. The studies point to about a 65% success rate. That's a little bit more than 1/2 people keeping weight off long term. I am done with the fad and the yo-yo.
  25. Question for those following the Keto Diet. I'm curious as to how much fat you consume. I'm getting in roughly 600 to 800 calories a day, 19 to 25 carbs, 75+ Protein, and roughly 30 grams of fat. I've had some say that's too much, and others tell me it's way too low. Any thoughts/advice? Please and thank you. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App
