Undecided - Newbie - figuring my way around
catwoman7 replied to Blue.ring.key's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I don't know if you have GERD or not, but if you do, surgeons usually recommend the bypass because the sleeve can make that worse (it doesn't happen to everyone, but it happens to a significant enough minority that you'll usually be advised to do bypass instead). You may have other health issues that would make one surgery or the other more appropriate for you - if so, I'd at least consider what the surgeon is recommending. -
So...prior to having Gastric Bypass, I heard stories of people losing 15lbs a week. I was 297 lbs on day of surgery (09.08.2020). Today I am 267. Im curious as to the whether this is normal. I was hoping for more. My surgeon, nutritionist and fitness coach have assured me that I am progressing well. However, when I get on this forum I see people who have lost much more. Thoughts? I am eating my protein. I walk about 6000 steps a day. I am optimistic as I write but I just want to make sure I am successful. On a happy note, I know that I am losing inches because my skinny jeans literally fell off the other day

Hello, all the way from Dubai, United Arab Emirates. My name is Yumna and I'm Canadian/Pakistani. Living in UAE since 2008. I've been obese my entire life. Thank you, mama and Papa genes! I have the same story as all of you in my position. Did 100000s of diets, activities, prepared food subscription, spent thousands of dollars on things that just DIDNT WORK! I also suffer from PCOS and it's not been easy! I'm honestly so tired of trying and now that I am married (since 2019 January) I want to start a family. My PCOS is the number 1 reason why I've resulted in looking into gastric surgery, I knew the option was always there but to be honest I never felt uneasy in my skin. Growing up chubby made me comfortable with who I am. But now that I had a miscarriage and want to start a family. All i am seeing at the end of this dark tunnel is another thousands of dollars, needles, and suffering for years to try to grow a family. JUST BECAUSE OF PCOS AND OBESITY! Ahh, my frustration now is beyond I've ever been with my weight and PCOS. So here I am looking through this forum and trying my best to get all the information i can for 1. Gastric mini bypass 2. Gastric sleeve These two are what I'm stuck between, I've visited a very qualified surgeon here in UAE - he has recommended the mini gastric. however, the idea that not only will my stomach be sliced but also my intestine is scaring me. So i ask you gastric sleeve and bypass recoveries to tell me which option is best and why. When you were deciding why did you choose what you did and how has it helped you and failed you throughout the years post-surgery, I want to know the good the bad, and the ugly! I would like to make a decision in the coming 2 weeks and set my mind up. Till then ill continue to go through the millions of threads here! If you've read this far, THANK YOU! 😍- 15 replies

I’d never heard that. I know that rapid weight loss can effect the gallbladder and many people need gallbladder removal for that reason. But I’ve never heard of it causing elevated liver enzymes. I’m sure it’s one of many risks involved in surgery but I would think it still needs monitoring. Especially when symptomatic. I did have my gallbladder removed during my gastric bypass surgery. Due to what turned out to be chronic inflammation. But I’m pretty sure my liver levels in previous tests were ok. I’m waiting to hear from my primary care physician about getting more bloodwork done to see what the situation is. My ferritin was very low even though my iron was fairly normal range. Slight elevation of my liver enzymes before maybe, but then a drastic spike. Normal is 6-29 I’ve had it go from 9 to 13 in 2018 my gastric bypass was April 2019. I think May after surgery it was 10. But then a year later May 2020 it tested at 43. Strange. I’m not necessarily worried. But with my other symptoms I’d like to know. And I’m having a lot of pain. The next test July it was 29 but I’d had two blood transfusions ... so of course my blood labs were altered by that so I need a new baseline bloodwork done. Interesting that my ferritin was only 7 in a range of 16-232 after those transfusions it was 39.

Wow it's coming in fast. I got a call today, they want to schedule my bypass surgery for Oct 26, exactly 2 weeks from today! I am totally unprepared! I don't have any supplies! I am not sure I call pull it off by the 26th. Plus, it is very short notice for time off from my job! I am very stressed about this. First they told me early November and that is great, perfect even. They are going to get back to me if they have a November date, if not I will be taking the 26th of Oct, and start fasting the day after tomorrow! I'm not sure where to start. Not sure what kind of protein water to buy, etc. I started this journey in August of 2019, lost my job and insurance in Oct 2019. Was blessed to get a new job with the same insurance in April. Now my bariatric checklist is done. My health is terrible and I can't this surgery soon enough. However I want to be able to do it right. Any advice appreciated!

Anyone for October 2020?
Coexister replied to barbieater's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Had my surgery October 7th converted to bypass and hiatal hernia repair. Had someStill feeling pain and had some really rough nights. Last night was first night I slept through without any incidents. Turns out nurse in hospital told me wrong pills to crush and once I figured that out it made a huge difference. Loss of energy , sleeping a lot , walking a lot to move gas . Things are improving day by day. No issues with drinking water or protein shakes. -

I'd like to think that you just have not found the right filling for that bread, Dr. Tea!😉🤣 Kidding aside, I agree with you. I did not fully swear off refined carbs and grains at the beginning of my journey, but knew I would most likely have to avoid them to speed up the process of losing weight, especially since I'm a revision.(tend to lose a lot slower than virgin procedures) The truth is, the fact that I allow myself the freedom of eating them occasionally, has made me realize that I don't really need/crave them anymore. Instead, I look for an alternative and even then, once in a while will do just fine. It feels foreign and weird to me, but I like it!🤫 How far out are you, Tea? And when did you reach your goal? -
Horrible GERD episode last night

Did your Surgeon send you home with a prescription for a PPI? I believe it is fairly common even after revisions to still take them for a few weeks during the healing phase Get Well Soon ❤️ -
Horrible GERD episode last night
Happy Go Lucky posted a topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
Last night I woke up choking from acid back up and even threw up a little. Throat on fire and still have nasty taste in my mouth no matter how many times I brush and swish around listerine. I also am wheezing and go no sleep after fear of it happening again. I had revision from vsg to DS (9.17.20)and never suffered from this before but since the revision, this has been an issue(not as scary as last night).I have chewable antacids that helped little but boy was this scary. Hate bypass
DesperateEC replied to DesperateEC's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
Hi, with the sleeve before my 3 pregnancies I could only take 3-4 bites of food before feeling incredibly full even leading to vomiting. Within a year I had lost 150 pounds with the bypass it’s no longer a pouch fullness but an uncomfortable nausea feeling. I have an iron stomach so I’ve only had dumping once but I stick to what I know to be safe. Everyone is different. To me the sleeve was much bettter because I’m a good addict -

Re-sleeve to Bypas
Kikikiki replied to Rocky4521's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
I might be a band to sleeve to bypass soon lol I had the band in 2015, that just did nothing for me, 2016 got the sleeve and now I’m struggling big time with GERD symptoms and my surgeon said that he needs to look inside and if it is in fact GERD and not a hernia causing these symptoms then bypass is my only option! -
Hi! What do you mean you no longer get the full sensation like with the sleeve? I’m currently sleeved but might possibly need revision to bypass due to gerd... what do you feel now with the bypass when you eat, apart from what you mentioned, does it feel a lot different? Do you get dumping syndrome?

Swelling and pain upper left side of stomach, 3 weeks post op bypass
Alsgal posted a topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
Hello I'm new to bariatric pals, this is my first day actually. Im still trying to figure out how to fix my profile to show post op instead of pre op?? As far as my stomach issue, I do plan to call my surgeon in the morning. I am wondering if anyone else experienced this issue? I knew to expect pain on the left side however surgery soreness has improved everywhere except this one place is like along my ribs and an area about as big as my hand it is visible swollen and is a dull pain mostly except when I reach or bend I feel a sharp pain and it's gotten worse about every day. Am I alone in this? -
I just got this email update and thought maybe I’d update my own on Linzess and hopefully not too long a story here. But taking linzess due to chronic issues even prior to gastric bypass surgery I ended up moving to a higher dose. It wasn’t very consistent for me. But I think some of my issue is nerve damage and muscle weakness, spasms. After I had plastics to remove excess skin with a Belt Lipectomy/ Butterfly Lift and some stomach muscle tightening I stopped Linzess. It did help more initially and I got off the medication. I still have problems due to chronic illness but now I just take Dulcolax soft chews which are the only thing that doesn’t cause painful cramping. And it’s easier to control dosage. also keep in mind dietary fiber, getting fluids, and other factors can effect this. Chia is a good source of fiber and you can make a chia protein pudding.you need both soluble and insoluble fibers.

1 year after gastric sleeve problems...
California Guy replied to Anna N.'s topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
I have a similar experience to share. I got the sleeve in 2013. About 1 year post op I hadn't reached my goal weight and decided to do a liquid only diet for 4 weeks. We all know liquid diets will result in weight loss. Three weeks in, I felt faint. I almost passed out a few times when going from sitting to standing. I lost my appetite and found no pleasure in anything I did. At this point I had lost 117 lbs. I convinced myself if weight loss was going to make me feel so bad, it wasn't worth it. I gradually let my diet slip and over the next few years gained 90 lbs. This year I went in for a revision to DS. Again, I felt faint frequently. I fainted one time at home and woke up on the tile floor. This time I did some research and consulted my doctors. I attributed the light headedness to a combination of several things. Too much low blood pressure medicine, so we halved it twice. I assumed my blood sugar was low so I added more fruit to my diet. Restrictive diet with many artificial foods (shakes). It was time to advance to a soft food diet so I started eating a great variety of real food and dropped protein shakes completely. I needed more calories. Ketosis, I had a lot of rapid weight loss. At this stage the weight loss slowed a bit. Dehydration. I was doing a lot of outdoor home projects in the Summer. I wasn't getting enough water. I tested as much as I could individually and was able to rule out the blood pressure medicine. Even when I didn't take medicine for days, I was light headed. Even when I drank plenty of water for days, I was light headed all the time. From my experience the second time around, I dealt with the problems and changed everything up until I found the right combination. I eat healthy meals, get plenty of food, and lose weight each month. Four months later, I'm no longer feeling light headed. Today I'm at my lowest weight in 20 years. I know they call loss of satisfaction a form of depression. I never went to a psychiatrist. Maybe I should have but I don't feel I would get much benefit from them. My advice is to evaluate your nutrition plan and eliminate anything that isn't natural food. Natural sugars in fruit are better than anything with added sugars. Protein in lean meats is better than protein shakes or bars. -
Weight Loss and Probiotics
California Guy replied to peachadee's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I came back home after 5 days in the hospital for my duodenal switch revision. I weighed 23 lbs. more than when I left! I literally ate nothing during those 5 days. I had as little of the liquid diet components as possible. This weight was all IV fluids. I was on IV everyday for 5 days. I had IV infiltration due to a poor IV placement. I dropped 5 lbs. per day for 5 days. Don't gauge progress day by day. It is best to track your weight and look at the month to month change. You may even stall for a full month, but overall, you'll progress fine if you follow your diet. -
Anyone go into surgery alone?
California Guy replied to samiaam25's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I was dropped off by my wife. My surgery was at the end of May. No visitors were allowed in the hospital but they were allowed in the operating waiting room, for a quick visit if desired. I decided to go alone anyway. In May, no one wanted to go near a hospital There was a lot of uncertainty and perceived risk around hospitals due to COVID. It was more difficult for my family since they didn't get good phone reports back from the surgeons or hospital but they knew there were some issues not going as planned. My first surgery (Day 1) was cut short. They resolved a hiatal hernia and removed the gallbladder. Required a second surgery (Day 3) to investigate and resolve a common bile duct stricture. I had the third surgery (Day 4) and got the revision to duodenal switch done. Went home on Day 5. Despite planning to be there only one or two nights, and having 7 procedures over 3 days of surgery, I felt great and recovered quickly. I'm grateful for the excellent care and precautions taken to ensure my weight loss surgery would be safe and successful. I wasn't nervous at all going into the first surgery. I have complete trust in the Surgeon's experience. I was well motivated to make a drastic change to improve my health. It paid off for sure. -
I have a gastric bypass RNY the following Thursday (22nd) and I've been on the pre-op diet for a week. I'm starving hungry too and also feeling anxious about the surgery. Covid means I have to go to the hospital on my own too and no visitors for the 2 nights I'm there - I agree having to be on my own is very daunting. I'm just trying to hold it together by reminding myself why I'm doing this - steady weight gain, yo yo dieting for years, high bp, arthritis, pre-diabetes. If I postpone it now, all routine ops here might be cancelled till who knows when if covid accelerates more, so I think as my decision is made, it's best to just do it now. Good luck!

Gastritis and sleeve surgery
catwoman7 replied to thinnerS's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
they usually recommend bypass for people who have GERD, because for a significant minority, it does get worse. Although there are people on here whose GERD actually improved. And for others, it stayed the same. It's more likely to get worse than better, but then, it's all a giant crap shoot. It's hard to predict how it'll turn out for you since it's an individual thing. -
Will HIP cover gastric bypass? And what requirements if any do they have? Thanks Sent from my SM-G975U1 using BariatricPal mobile app

That's a question you'll have to ask your surgeon before you have the surgery. NSAIDs are not good to take after bariatric surgery because they can cause ulcers, but that is more important for gastric bypass patients than sleeve patients. Some doctors say it's ok for sleeve patients to take NSAIDs. Please ask your surgeon.

Anyone for August 2020
Napua replied to MotivatedMomma's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I had reflex, sleep apnea before surgery and did the bypass. During the surgery the doctor found the hernia and took care of it at the same time on 8/28/20. Doing well as of today with no dumping.
