Weight loss meds after surgery!
carpeediem replied to carpeediem's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I don't have hunger cravings; if anything, I have the opposite problem. I'm constantly battling dehydration because I still cannot get all my protein and fluid in one day. Luckily my insurance has covered IV infusions, but I know that can not be a long-term solution. My doctor said that insurance won't cover weight loss drugs if your BMI is 27 or below, and I that should start the drugs now still. My BMI is already 31.1. Though, that's not a solution to not losing weight. -

Weight loss meds after surgery!
Tomo replied to carpeediem's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Yes, I did. Before my revision to RNY for gerd, I was suffering from severe gerd and as it progressed it gave me a constant hunger-like pain. I ate more and more small meals but the food in my stomach only helped the burning symptoms temporarily. I gained 1/4 of my total weight loss back after developing gerd, so my surgeon put me on Lomaira while I was waiting for my revision. The Lomaira helped a lot for appetite control. I only took it as needed, not daily, often in the afternoon or evening. Of course, it doesn't help with the gerd but it did take away that particular symptom. -

pre surgery non scale victory
blackcatsandbaddecisions replied to KimA-GA's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Congrats on the pre surgery weight loss! I had a lot of weight to lose so I am very grateful I lost 50+ lbs before surgery. It might not make as big a difference for those who have less than 100 or so plans to lose, but for those of us who are 150+ lbs to lose it can make a huge difference. Plus it can make surgery safer for us. And the amazing thing is unlike all other diets this pre op weight loss actually stays off! -
My tips and why I Don't recommend Sleeve surgery for long term
blackcatsandbaddecisions replied to strawberryga's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I’m mostly confused on the lipo portion of this. Speaking as someone who recently had plastic surgery, I had multiple surgeons I consulted with note that I didn’t need lipo because quite frankly there wasn’t fat to suck out. If you lose enough weight you won’t even be a candidate for liposuction. Having just had all the loose skin removed from my hips up, I am not sure how this would have worked even had I asked for it. I can clearly feel bones and muscles under the surface now especially in my arm and chest. -
how did you create a goal weight?
STLoser replied to KimA-GA's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I weighed 393 at my highest. I always wanted to get under 200. I was there as a teenager and young adult, when I weighed around 160. I had hoped to get down to 160 or 170, but knew I'd be happy to get to 199. I got down to 187 in July, and I'm in maintenance now, 2 years and almost 3 months post op. I have gained a few pounds and I'm at 193 right now. I'm very happy at this weight, even though it's not a "normal" weight for my height. I wear a size 12 or 14, and I'm very happy with that! I've decided to make my threshold 195 before I get concerned. I want to stay under 200. Sent from my Pixel 5a using BariatricPal mobile app -
I'm in this situation now! I haven't lost any weight in three months, which is frustrating!

Hello All! I was just wondering if anyone has taken weight loss medication after having bariatric surgery?! I had VSG in March and lost about 50 lbs in four months which was super exciting. Though, I haven't lost any weight since mid-July. My 6month post-op doctor suggested that I start taking Saxenda because Wegovy is on back order tool January. I started at 250 and have been sitting at 200-202 for three months. I guess my question is, has anyone else taken weight loss medication after having surgery? I feel pretty disappointed! Yes, fifty pounds is something to be proud of, but I feel like I lost 70-80% of my stomach, and now I need to take medication. Wtf! I'm just frustrated because I'm following my plan so I'm not sure why I'm not losing any weight anymore.

What made you decide to have a WLS?
Voogs replied to omrhsn's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I'm 66 and tired of taking meds for diabetes, high blood pressure (that never seems to go down) and thyroid issues brought on by the various meds for diabetes. I'm a 35 BMI , so on the low end but assorted diets and exercise never seemed to work. Hoping that the sleeve helps reduce the weight (245) and allows me to possibly drop some if not all of my meds. -
3 years out from Sleeve. I feel like a failure.

Just had my revision 4 weeks ago! My liquid diet was protien shakes, broths, low sugar yogurt, low fat cottage cheese, sugar free jello, and sugar free popsicles. Oh, and any sugar free drinks (non-carbonated) and tea. I had a sleeve 7 years ago and gained all my weight back as well. I decided to do gastric bypass because I knew I needed more permanent help if I wanted to truly get healthy. I was arrogant and not in the right frame of mind when I got my sleeve so I sabotaged myself. This time, I was 100% ready and its been soooo much better and the will power to want to do better seems almost natural now. Having said that, when I did my liquid diet before surgery, I dropped weight so fast! 12 lbs in 1 week and was down 21 lbs by the time my surgery rolled around (3.5 weeks). So, doing the liquid diet again definitely re-starts your sleeve but it will be up to you to keep up the diet after, which for me is the hard part. Good luck, whatever you decide to do! -
Yes, it happens to 95% of people who have weight loss surgery. So perfectly normal. Mine is just starting sooner. It lasts a few months and then your hair comes back.

I've read before you can restart your sleeve by going back on a liquid diet for 5 days. I had a sleeve 7 years ago and just updated to a bypass 4 weeks ago an I can tell you when I had to do my liquid diet again, I dropped weight FAST. Like 12lbs in a week! Almost to the point where I questioned if I even wanted to have another surgery. In the end it was better for me to have it, but maybe that might help you. -
I'm just over a year out and have maybe 15 more pounds I'd like to lose. My rings are dangerously loose, so my husband bought me some ring sizers and they help. I went in and had my finger sized just out of curiosity, and I've gone from an 8 to a 6.5! That just seems crazy to me. Anyway, I won't get them sized until I stop losing weight as I don't want to have to do it again later.

What made you decide to have a WLS?
ShoppGirl replied to omrhsn's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I was a lower BMI to start but only because I had basically been on a never ending diet for years. Just because of the portions of what I ate (even when it was nutritious food) I was gaining like ten pounds a year). Well my knees were starting to hurt when I exercised and I just knew that within a year or two when I weighed even more it was going to hurt that much more and make it impossible to exercise making me gain even more weight. I could see it snowballing and I decided to do something before it got out of control. -

Congratulations on the weight loss. Also, I understand not having a normal sized childhood. I wanted so much to have the experiences my friends were having when they were picking out prom dresses or going shopping for bathing suits in the summer. You're not alone. Sending you hugs! -

@kcuster83 I didn't realize you are 6ft tall! I'm so happy to know there's another tall gal on here! I'm 6 ft 2 inches and when I tell people my goal is to get to onederland they always question... "is that it?" I've also battled 100 pounds over the last decade. Some years I would feel like I was winning, but most I would be struggling and railing against srubborn weight that would not come off. I'm so grateful for this surgery and the chance at a healthier me. -

I have a bad knee.... again. The only way the dr will fix it is if I lose about 30 lbs. Im 68 years old. I cant breathe and cant walk because of my knee. I have been dieting forever and now I am losing a minimal amout of weight. My dr suggested it in April but I wasnt quite ready She refered my to a dietian and I have been following that diet and by July had only lost 5 lbs. I decided if I wanted to ever get my knee fixed and get off the oxygen I would have to have the surgery. The dietian said it would be the sleeve which I hadnt even heard of. I go for my first surgery appt on Tues. Im hoping it is not going to take another 6 months to a year for me to have the surgery. -
What made you decide to have a WLS?
omrhsn posted a topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
Hi. I know that we all had our different reasons for having WLS. I did it because I was fed up with yo-yo dieting. I was on-off Keto diet for over two years. I've lost some weight and gained it all back in the end. The longest I've stayed on diet was 5 months and that paid off really well (lost 25 kg). But then Covid-19 hit. I was about to go back to Keto diet in January 22 when my sister called to tell me she was going for the mini gastric bypass. That was the first time time I've heard of it. Fast forward three weeks and I'm on the plane flying to Egypt to have mine. My "breaking point" was finally going back to work in the office and having to remove the arm rests of my office chair because it somehow "shrunk" and was squeezing my thighs. How about you? What made you decide to have the surgery and what was the breaking point? -
Weight loss and menopause
Arabesque replied to SleevedGAPeach21's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
HRT! (That’s likely what your mum was on too @ShoppGirl.) I was menopausal before my surgery. It was the reason of the sudden 15kg weight gain I had that pushed me to the surgery. The hormonal flush from the oestrogen released from my fat as I was losing was fantastic. No menopausal symptoms at all. Once my weight loss slowed they came back though. ☹️ I’ve had symptoms since about 2016 & still do. Still have breakthrough hot flushes even on HRT though they’re not as bad as when I’m not on it. And I’m not as ‘feisty’ on HRT. My 82yr old mother is still on HRT - if she goes off it all her symptoms return & you don’t want her feisty! I wonder sometimes if I might end up being the same. Lots of benefits. Good for supporting calcium absorption & therefore your bone density. Can reduce the risk of heart disease & strokes too if you start before you’re 60. Certainly worth a conversation with your GP &/or gynaecologist. -

There are lots of exercises you can do seated which wouldn’t impact the healing of your ankle. Google is your friend. Resistance bands are really useful too. Sure won’t stretch you from a cardiac perspective but will work your upper body muscles. And yes, exercise only contributes to about 10% of any weight loss you have to lose. Have 50lbs to lose then exercise will be responsible for about 5lbs. Unless you start running marathons! If your calorie consumption is less than your body needs to function, you will lose weight even if it is a little slower with your reduced activity. Maybe check in with your dietician to ensure you’re on the right path. Sometimes a small tweak can be helpful. Am a little surprised you’re being advised to still be getting protein from shakes instead of real food alone this far along even if you have weight you still wants to lose.. I didn’t have another shake once I began purées. My calories were still low & I got my protein in. Even now I get in 70g of protein & consume about 1300/1400 calories a day in maintenance. Oh & I didn’t really exercise while I was losing & apart from some stretching exercises I still don’t. Wouldn’t burn 40 calories a day. Hope your ankle heals quickly & you’re up & moving easily soon. -

So sorry you are experiencing this. Your PCOS is the likely suspect or at least a contributing factor to your struggles. Also check your medications. Many common meds are renown for resulting in weight gain. There is not one diet/way of eating that works for everyone. So your nutritionist saying you eat healthily & gave you no other help is pretty poor. Like @Sunnyway, I made changes to what I eat. I did lots of reading. And as I was slowly introducing foods back into my diet, there were some I didn’t start eating again, some I started & dropped again. I really listened to my body & what it needed. There are foods/food types I avoid, others I restrict or reduce my intake. Much like @Sunnyway, I cut out a lot of added sugar, artificial sweeteners & sugar alternatives (so no desserts, cakes, biscuits, sweets, etc.), little starch (no potatoes, bread, rice or pasta). General keep to fairly low processed foods prepping most of what I eat myself which allows me to control the ingredients & how it’s cooked. I eat some carbs - about 2 serves a day but whole or multi grains. But I found this is what works for me. I feel better: no bloating, less gas, more even energy levels, etc. Don’t really miss anything. Eating this way works for me. It may not work for you. Question the nutritionist further - they are there to help you. You may benefit from a eating plan that incorporates aspects of anti inflammation diet, or to reduce foods naturally high in hormones (soy products, lot fed beef & chicken, etc.) There may be additives in more processed foods that are fighting your ability to lose weight too.* Again the nutritionalist should be able to advise you. *- Watched a great documentary earlier this year which showed that a high processed food diet actually increases the hunger hormone in your body & decreases the hormone that tells you you’ve had enough. Gracious knows what they do to your other hormones.
