Briar Rose - yes, its a huge decision and major surgery. I hope we can make the best decisions for our health and well being and not think we are taking the easy way out. Reading these posts there is no easy way about it and can have some long term ramifications. Don't get me wrong, I am still intrigued by the surgery; however have fears of complications and weight gain of course. It will cost me $19,000 to get the revision done. So it needs to make sense to me.

I found that I got bored quickly. It was easy for me to make excuses as to why I didn’t go to the gym or why I chose to eat cheesecake at 10pm at night. I recognized that I was depressed. We all know what we are supposed to do and yet we choose to do the opposite? Once I recognized my depression, I made the decision to work on it. I also stepped out of what I normally did and tried something new, in terms of exercise. I scoffed at the expense of doing Pilates, but I tried it for a week. I got a pass for $20 and I vowed that if I showed up at least 3 times a week, then I would sign up! I went 5 times. It was so relaxing. It was in a small setting( COVID conscious) and I felt very accomplished after each class. It surprised me. I was getting stronger every class, my anxiety about the pandemic went away, I began drinking more water and I started making smarter choices with my eating. I noticed a difference almost immediately. That one act created a domino effect. Just say to yourself, “I’m going to walk/climb stairs for 15 minutes 3 times a week” see where that takes you. Do a sleeve reset. Do one thing for yourself and see if it’s a catalyst to getting back on track. I ended up having surgery to convert from a sleeve to bypass. I had horrible Gerd and I decided I wasn’t going to live on ppis for the rest of my life. I just had surgery last week and the struggle is real. But I look forward to getting back into the Pilates studio and I haven’t experienced GERD at all. I have faith that you can find that one thing to get you back in track! I’m rooting for you! Good luck and be well!

Hi Everyone, I am a 10 year lap bander that is now getting it removed for various reasons. I am trying to decide if I get a revision to mini gastric bypass or just leave it alone. I too have gained - not all, but I have. I want to lose 50 pounds in total. So deciding if I just do it myself by healthy diet and exercise or go to the next level of surgery. What I am reading here is with the surgery, you have to do it yourself anyway - healthy diet and exercise. And that is a problem for most. We did not have surgery because we found it easy to eat healthy, small meals and exercise. Its an addiction to food for a reason - comfort food. It makes us feel good. Until it doesn't. Its a love/hate relationship. if we all had great motivation we would not be overweight and need surgery to lose weight. Its not that simple. It's psychological. What these clinics are not providing is mental support. We all know what to eat. So why are we all still challenged? Our patterns are inherent in us. Once we get over that food = everything will be better, we will be better. Just like any other addiction. I'm not sold on this surgery.

Help! Thinking about cancelling
The Greater Fool replied to Sandra90's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
If you are not sure Gastric Bypass is what you want, perhaps you should cancel surgery. This is a life long choice and you need to be committed to it. Your Doc works for you. Doc is your expert. Doc gave you an educated and experienced opinion on which surgery is best for you. Doc gave you reasons for the surgery suggested. You need to be your own advocate. If you don't want RNY, don't get it. No one is forcing you to have surgery. If you want VSG, tell your Doc that's what you want. This is a LIFE LONG choice you have to live with. You better be 100% sure about your choice. Good luck, Tek -
Help! Thinking about cancelling
BigSue replied to Sandra90's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I went into my initial consultation thinking that I wanted the sleeve, but my surgeon pushed me to get gastric bypass instead because I had a very high starting BMI (over 60). I had gotten the impression that the sleeve was a more modern, less risky, less extreme surgery, but my surgeon explained that the risks are about equal (although there are different risks), and gastric bypass typically results in more weight loss. I was unsure at the time, but as I learned more about both surgeries, I became more confident that gastric bypass was the right surgery. It might just be confirmation bias, but I've seen a lot of people talk about getting severe GERD with the sleeve, and/or not losing enough weight, and getting a revision to bypass. What surgery you get is YOUR decision, though, so if you are not comfortable with it, you have the right to cancel. However, it's best to avoid making big decisions when you're in a heightened emotional state, so what were your thoughts a few weeks ago when the surgery was a little farther in the distance and you were in a calmer state of mind? -
Help! Thinking about cancelling
Confirmed replied to Sandra90's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hello I too have thought about cancelling I am on Nov 16th. But I have come this far and even began to buy supplies. I don't know if I want the sleeve or the bypass my doctor says he is ok with either one so that doesn't help me decide. I feel you will cheat yourself out of a fresh start and grow to regret staying in bad health. I wish you all the best and wise decisions. -
Help! Thinking about cancelling
Jaelzion replied to Sandra90's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hi there. For me it was the other way around - I really wanted the bypass but my care team determined that it was medically contraindicated for me. I tried hard to change their minds but in the end I went with their recommendation. I was disappointed, but it turned out okay, I didn't have any major complications and the surgery has been effective so far. However, in my case, there was an actual medical reason why the bypass was extra-risky for me. I got a 2nd opinion and the 2nd doctor agreed it was contraindicated. In your case, it sounds like the surgeon just feels the bypass will be more effective? If there is no medical contraindication, it seems like after being told the pros and cons, you would be allowed to choose the surgery you want. What would happen if you just said, "Look, I understand your reasoning, but I'm not comfortable with the bypass. I want the sleeve."? Would he refuse to do it? Could you get a 2nd opinion? Maybe if another doctor indicates that the sleeve is a viable option for you, your surgeon will relent. Have you shared your concerns about the bypass with your surgeon? Maybe with more information, you'll be more comfortable with it? In any case, it doesn't seem right for you to be forced into a surgery you're not sure you want. You're the one who has to live with it, so you should be calling the shots (assuming there's no medical issue preventing the sleeve). I'd revisit the issue and get more information, then decide for myself one way or the other. Hope it all works out for you! -
Hello all! I’m scheduled to have gastric bypass surgery in 2 days 10/22/2020. I had my pre-op appointment yesterday and completed all my labs. Since the beginning of this process I wanted the sleeve but my surgeon feels like I will have greater results and long term results with the bypass. I’m 30, 5’8 and weigh 307. Highest weight 323. I have been going back and forth in my head about just going through with the bypass, but I have not came to peace about the decision as of yet. Has anyone experienced this before? Any advice will be appreciated. Thanks for reading!

Revision due to Reflux and scared!!
Jaelzion replied to bajankat's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
I had the sleeve, not the bypass so this may or may not help, but... I had also had multiple abdominal surgeries prior to my bariatric surgery. My surgeon did say the surgery took him a little longer than usual due to adhesions and scar tissue, but it was nothing he couldn't handle. I haven't had any major complications either. I know everyone is different, but that's how it went for me. ☺️ -
Sleeve to Bypass for weight loss?
Christina760 replied to Christina760's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
Jean! I have my surgery scheduled 11/2. I met with my surgeon last week and he said as long as I stick to my no carb, protein and physical activity I will lose the weight and go back down to my lowest. Today is my first day no coffee and I’m dying but ready to get back into track. I also follow some on IG that has revision for weight loss and she said it takes longer but possible if we follow the diet and don’t go back to our old habits. I totally know how much this sucks to have come so far only to gain lol but we got this!!! -
Ate a small piece of candy feeling extremely nauseous
Jdymitc posted a topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
I had a sleeve July 2019 due to a lot of issues had a revision to gastric bypass 2/2020 had not had any candy at all in that timeframe. We had a 21st birthday celebration for my daughter and I avoided all cake, soda and other goodies at the party but while cleaning up there was one leftover peanut butter cup left in the candy dish and I rationalized it in my head that well it’s peanut butter and peanut butter is a source of protein (I know I was making excuses to myself to eat it) so I popped it in my mouth and chewed it up. About 5-10 minutes afterward I started feeling sweaty and nauseated (not like I need to vomit just an icky feeling). My family has a history of diabetes (not me personally but my dad and brother are both insulin dependent. Do you think since I had the surgery I better get checked for diabetes? (I don’t plan to try and eat candy again but wasn’t sure if this is a “normal” reaction to introducing sugar to my new body or something else) -
Hi from UK (new ) , liver shrink diet
Deb9386 replied to Halechap's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Hi 🙋♀️ I'm also in the UK and my RNY bypass surgery is this Thursday (22nd)! My liver shrinkage diet is between 800-1000 calories and I've been on it for just over 2 weeks already. I'm having the op privately - very difficult to get it on the NHS in my area - but my dietitian provides the same pre-op diet for NHS and private patients. It's not protein shakes; she gives a full diet plan which includes specific amounts of protein, fruit, veg and carbs. She said quite specifically not to go below 800 calories at this stage. I found it hard to stick to the 800-1000 cal limit when including all the carbs she put in so dropped some of them, and have also decided from today to go onto liquid (protein shakes) for the last 3 days. I think all plans are different but tailored to the patient? My pre-op diet is usually for 2 weeks but I was put onto it 4 days early as apparently I have a "fatty liver", so there may be a specific reason why your nurse told you 600 calories a day. You could ring/email them? Good luck! -
Revision due to Reflux and scared!!
dorkyfaerie replied to bajankat's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
I had revision from sleeve to bypass on Sept 18 due to severe GERD. I had also not lost much due to maladaptive eating I had developed due to the GERD symptoms (the symptoms were WAY worse when my stomach was empty, so I had to eat something every 1-2 hours). After sleeve surgery, I woke up with GERD symptoms and they never really stopped. Since the revision to bypass I have had zero GERD symptoms and it has been glorious! I have absolutely no regrets for going through the revision. My only hiccup has been in the transition from pureed food to mashed food, but I think it's mostly me just needing to adjust to the new way my stomach/system works. Good luck! I hope it goes as well for you as it has for me! -
My first gastric bypass I was told that I cannot eat soup after surgery. However I have no such limitations this time around. I also see many soups in the store. I was wondering how people felt about eating chunky soups after surgery.

Lesson: You'll waste food. Don't beat yourself up
chunkarella replied to MaybeMeow's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I feel that. I've always been told to not waste food and to clean my plate (cue lifelong issues with food and feeling guilty) and since i was bypassed, I have to be okay with stopping and leaving food on my plate. When I make food, I put it on a paper plate and let my dog eat the rest (no complaints from her) It's weird because i sometimes have to tell myself, outloud, to stop eating and that i can always have it tomorrow. -
What was/is your greatest fear?
chunkarella replied to Smitty74's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
^^^^^^^^^^^ THIIIIIIS ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ I have been big my entire life and i've tried EVERYTHING and was afraid that bariatric surgery would be the same way. So far, this is working the best for me (bypassed in July) and I feel more confident with this than I did with anything else. Sometimes our minds are our own worst enemy. -
What was/is your greatest fear?
blackcatsandbaddecisions replied to Smitty74's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
My biggest fears are: 1. Dying- I am the breadwinner for my family, have two young children, and two elderly parents with dementia I take care of. I need to be here because there are a lot of people counting on me for pretty much everything. 2. It not working- I feel like I hear so many horror stories of it not working, or people losing only a small amount of weight before nothing happening. I know it generally works, but you can’t help but be concerned that you might go through all this for nothing. 3. Regain. This is not my first rodeo with weight loss. Over 10 years ago I lost 150 lbs (without surgery) and had an amazing experience being “thin” for the first time in my life with all the accolades, pride, etc that comes with it. Only to gain it all back plus a lot more. I am doing everything I can to try to make this time different but I’ve done it to myself before and I’m terrified I’ll do it again. 4. My freaking insurance finding some dumb loophole to deny my surgery that they submitted for last week! Or Covid causing elective surgeries to be cancelled again and my husband losing his job that has the Bariatric coverage medical insurance before they resume surgery. Or basically some new reason that I get denied after so many years trying to make this work. 5. Complications: a leak, chronic issues, being nauseous forever, a clot, having to have the surgery revised later due to gerd, or any other issues that I can think of. So basically what are my greatest fears? Everything, it looks like. Ha! -
Anyone for October 2020?
theshrinkingchef replied to barbieater's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I am so over drinking broth. I’m going out of my mind! My left side incision is so painful.... at times I want to cry! I’m on day 5 post op gsv to Rny bypass conversion. I’ve never experienced pain like this. I was so cavalier about my recovery and I’m thankful my mother was able to help me, otherwise I don’t know what I would’ve done. Has anyone tried a post surgery girdle/band? I feel like I need one of those to help with gravity and the incision pain! I’m about to run out of pain medicine and in my life, I’ve never gone past 2 days with medicine. Please tell me it gets better?
