Anyone for October 2020?
bajankat replied to barbieater's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Good Morning, I had my revision to bypass surgery yesterday morning. When I woke up I had no surgery pain. I was thinking it wasn't done until the GAS damn near killed me and still is. That gas pain ain't no joke, for those of you who haven't gotten surgery yet, make sure you get enough gas relief and walk. I walked around the unit 4 laps yesterday, the nurse told me not to overdo it.... over do it?! I'm walking this damn gas out and preferably out my butt 😁 which by the way isn't happening and the gas is stubborn. I'm belching tho but it's not moving. I did finally pass one little gas out this morning. I saw the doc this morning and he said my stomach was in my esophagus. Now when I get up gravity is taken place with my right incisions I'm using a towel to walk when I get home I'll use my binder -

Hi all. Long time lurker but first time posting 😆 I was ‘sleeved’ a few years back, was successful in losing some weight, though due to different circumstances regained a large portion of that weight and also developed qUite severe GERD. My surgeon has recommended the bypass for me which is now all booked in for December 2020. Feeling excited, nervous, fear of failure again etc. hoping for a smooth journey ahead and will definitely looking forward to being a part of this community. Thanks!

Waiting on a date and social media thoughts
futureshrink replied to ajb1029's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I had lap band surgery about 10 years ago and I posted everything. Long story short band slipped twice and had to be removed a year ago. i have opted for gastric bypass for a number of reasons but I have let very few people know this time and haven’t posted anything on social media. This is why. when I had my first surgery I was thrilled, it worked, I worked hard and lost about 100 pounds. Everyone wanted to talk about it. And then my band slipped and I gained every pound back. And then I had the band repaired and I dropped 100 again. And then it slipped again and I did nothing about it until my weight crept back to my original weight over a 4 year period. I was not prepared to have to explain my story over and over including my failures. I also found that even though I was not in a huge body anymore, I still felt every bit as fat as I had when I weighed the most. I needed to process not being a fat girl anymore and I found I didn’t share the same excitement as everyone else. I never got any bullying or negative comments, even after I failed and people who love you will be over the moon at your progress. For me, it’s a choice to not have the super personal conversations over and over with people that aren’t in my inner circle. And to be honest, I am my own worst critic and every goal I don’t accomplish doesn’t need explanation to people I went to high school with. But that’s just me. I’m more selective about what I share now than I was 12 years ago. this time I started an art journal as part of the Brooklyn art project. It goes to a library I. New York anonymously. I can get my story out on my own terms. -

I'm excited for all of you. I wish the best you the best of luck. I am on track for my bypass as soon as I get insurance approval. I have NC Medicaid, and get my pre-op diet I'm still hoping for sometime in November. We shall see? -
So I am 3 weeks post op bypass. I had hives really bad a week ago all over my legs my doctors didnt know why. Then for the past few days I have been having really watery diarrhea. Tuesday was bad. Yesterday wasnt as bad and this morning I had to go a few times and I didnt even eat anything. I'm barely eating yet. My doctor is wondering if I maybe took too much miralax. I took a cap full Sunday night and then Monday morning which is what my doctorrecommended. I'm concerned this is going to be a constant thing. I'm afraid to eat. Im trying to go back to work but having to go to the bathroom pretty regularly isnt helping. If I am with a client I can't just stop what I'm doing. Protein shakes seem to make go as well. I am drinking lactose free shakes so I don't think it could be lactose intolerance. Anyone else have this? Anything help make you regular? My doctor suggested probiotics so I started them today. I'm desperate to get rid of the diarrhea. Sent from my SM-A102U using BariatricPal mobile app

I lost 180 lbs thanks to Gastric Bypass! Saved my life!
Christo711 posted a topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
Hey everyone! Just a quick intro!! My name is Chris. I'm 45 and had gastric bypass in 2015. I lost 180 lbs and have kept it off! As you all know, sooooooo many things in your life change after surgery. More than just weight loss. One thing that changed for me was that I went back to school. I found it so interesting during the process leading up to, and all the changes afterwards, just how psychological eating is for us. I also noticed and was very frustrated by the way people, including myself, had been and still are treated as a big guy as opposed to a small guy. If you have been through the process, you know EXACTLY what I mean. So, I went back to school at Cleveland State University, and am on track to becoming a clinical psychologist! My specific interest is, working with bariatric patients! (big surprise right??). As a part of my senior project, I am doing a research paper on bariatric surgery and self esteem. I'm interested, of course, in surgery patients. But anyone who has lost a large amount of weight is also of interest to me. If you are interested in helping my by taking a simple survey I have created, it would be really awesome! it is all anonymous, and only will be used for my paper in class. Nothing to be published. That will be another study in the next couple years for grad school!! It would be awesome if anyone would be willing to participate! If you want any more info, or want to know more about me. Just ask!! Here is the link : https://forms.gle/TQy3fAreLdjmRQYq9 I think that link works. IF there is an issue and you'd like to help, please let me know and I'll email you a link. Lots of love and thank you everyone!! Chris P.S.- Anyone who has not had the surgery but is thinking about it. 1. Make sure you are REALLY ready. 2. Don't be scared. It saved my life. 3. All your feelings and emotions are normal and valid. Please feel free to take the survey even if you haven't had surgery. I'm interested in your feelings too!!!!!! -

Sleeve to DS
GottaBeBlair replied to Happy Go Lucky's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
Hi Kozyjozie! Of course you’d have to consult with a doc to see if you are a good candidate for revision but I was the same as you. I regained almost all of my weight after having a child. I chose a revision to DS versus RNY since VSG is the first step of a DS surgery. So when I was revised, they didn’t touch my tummy, just completed the intestinal procedure. Please note that far less data is available on revisions, so the outcome may not be as significant as you’d like it to be. I am losing less than I did with my original procedure but I am losing much more than I would have on my own. I suggest before you even jump down the rabbit hole to really figure out why you regained. And come to terms with the excuses, so you won’t repeat. I got therapy as well. Hope that helps! -

at a BMI of 51, it's unlikely you'll be able to lose most of your excess weight and keep it off. Nothing against you at all, but fewer than 5% of people are able to do that on their own. I spent literally decades gaining and losing the same 50-ish pounds - and I had over 200 to lose. No way in h*ll was I ever going to lose that on my own, if I couldn't even keep 50 off, despite my best efforts. Maybe you'll be one of the people who can - but the statistics are against you. It's tough to lose that much weight - even WITH weight loss surgery it's tough, and some people do fail because of that, but it's a powerful tool that'll greatly increase your chance of success. (I know that YOU probably know this, but it sounds like your husband doesn't...) at one time weight loss surgeries were very risky, but they're not anymore. They've come a long way. Mortality rate on gastric bypass is 0.3%, for sleeve it's even lower (I can't remember the stat on that one since I had the bypass). Major complications are also rare. I was scared of it for many years, too, but I finally came the conclusion that staying at over 300 lbs put me at greater risk than having the surgery. I am SO GLAD I did it and would do it again in a heartbeat! I just wish I hadn't waited so long to do it! It may help if your husband started doing research on the surgeries - or reading books such as "Weight Loss Surgery for Dummies". Or maybe he could go with you to a consult. He's probably freaked because he doesn't know a lot about them. Hopefully armed with some good information, he'll start to come around! -

Hello everyone. I had the sleeve done august 17 2015. I lost 70 pounds in the first year. Little by little my weight started to come back. Now I’m the same weight I was before doing the surgery. Would this da revision be an option for me? I really would appreciate any advice you could give. I need to get healthy again. -

Deb9386 replied to cellbell's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I had the RNY bypass only last week but had been thinking about wls for some time. My husband was exactly the same as yours - very anxious about the risks of the operation and not understanding why I couldn't just lose through dieting as I had in the past. Anybody who has not been obese/morbidly obese almost certainly doesn't understand the issues around weight gain/loss for those who are. I had various co-morbidities and once I decided that I was going ahead with the surgery, just powered through his anxieties by saying I'd rather die of the surgery than spend 10 years having limb amputations due to diabetes. The day before my surgery somebody recommended to me Dr Matthew Weiner's book - How Weight Loss Surgery Really Works - and I read this immediately before my surgery. It validated all of my decision making and I highly recommend reading it if you're undecided about the surgery. If you, like me, are a yo-yo dieter who can lose weight on a diet and then gradually regains it all - it will resonate with you and give insights. Good luck with the decision making! -
Slow Weight Loss
Arabesque replied to sydneymarie2013's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
First, congrats on your surgery & weight loss so far. Some of us lose quickly others lose more slowly. We have weeks we lose more then the next hardly anything. The rate can depend on our age, gender, metabolic rate, past weight loss history, etc. all things we can’t control. The thing to remember is you’re losing. Whoo hoo! You didn’t put on all your weight in a couple of months so you can’t expect to lose it that quickly. Follow your plan. Measure your food. Keep a track of what you eat. You will reach your goal but it you have to put in the effort to have long term success. There are no short cuts. This is your journey & there are many things to celebrate along the way. Good luck. PS - Sleevers tend to lose weight more slowly than bypass patients at first but the average weight loss is about the same. -
Anyone for October 2020?
MamT replied to barbieater's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I have discovered Fairlife protein drinks that are lactose free and are a life saver for me. I prefer the vanilla but the chocolate and strawberry ones are good too. I had gastric bypass with hernia repair that was done robotically and I still have some pretty big bruises but it doesn’t hurt. I hope this helps. Good luck! -
First of all... it's your absolute right to keep it a secret if you wish. So don't feel pressured on any side. I had 65 pounds to lose and told my 10 year old that I was having hernia surgery (which was true). I just left the bypass part out. Only my husband and my best friend (who stayed with my daughter overnight know I had WLS. No other family. Not my parents of siblings or other friends. But your kiddos are older. I imagine it would be very hard to keep it a secret from them. Your eating significantly changes. And the recovery is no joke. And I'm not sure why you would keep it from teenagers who can understand the concept and honor your privacy. .. unless you don't trust them. Regardless... your body, your choice. Period. Best of luck!!

As far as Bypass goes my surgeon and I spoke at length about how much bowel he would bypass. He did a short or 100cm bypass on me when most do 150-200cm I'm told. I preferred this as I'd come in for a sleeve with 65 pounds to lose and he convinced me with my history of GERD the Bypass would be better. I was concerned about malabsorption and dumping and he said he found the shorter bypasses had far less dumping and said the bloodwork of his patients was usually better with the shorter bypass as well. He did say the weight loss was sometimes slower with the shorter bypass. And mine definitely is with a 37 pound loss at 4.5 months post op. But I'm ok with it. So... not stomach size but bowel bypass... yes!

Erin2020 replied to barbieater's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hello! I'm new to the forum but found it while searching online. I had gastric bypass on October 6th and so far, I'm doing great! Post op weight was 311 and today marks my 3 week anniversary and I'm down to 286.4. my 2 week visit post op appt went well and my Dr gave me a fist bump which is definitely not his style. 😁 I saw some people talking about their incisions but they heal quickly. I am having a lot of gas pain though. I feel like I take chewy tums like every other day. I don't think I'm eating enough and then I have dinner and I'm like whoa! pain alert! Def a process but I'm sure it will get better! Congrats to everyone who started the journey in October! -

Anyone had a revision to original gastric bypass?
Jsteelecat replied to Jsteelecat's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
Hi Misty, I am in NYC. I saw Dr Chaio at Mercy Medical center on Long Island. He was the only one at the NY Bariatric group that would take my insurance. But the NY Bariatric group routinely does revision surgeries so if you have private insurance you can check them out! -

Hello I hope you are doing. Congratulations on the revision of the Gastric Bypass. If you would not mind sharing the name of the surgeon who conducted your revision in case I experience the same issue and may need to seek further medical support. Are you in NYC? Misty
