Well, it is post op day three, and I want to thank everyone who gave me so much encouragement yesterday! I am feeling better today. Still sore, but much better than yesterday morning. I was able to drink an unsweetened ice tea last night at dinner time, and even sipped some apple juice when we got back to our room. I had my procedure done in Tijuana, Mexico, and we choose to stay in San Diego overnight before we flew home. (Have a six hour flight today, with a two hour lay over in Minneapolis, MN, then another hour long flight to Iowa, then a 45 minute drive home, so will be a LONG day.) Am sipping apple juice this morning, and plan to have a Protein drink before we leave for the airport. I am amazed that I haven't felt hungry at all since the surgery. Usually I am ALWAYS staarved. I can't wait to get home to get on a scale and see how much I have lost. I lost 20 pounds on the hated Pre-Op diet. I couldn't believe how the weight dropped off, BUT the diet was horrible. NO carbs. I really missed my potatoes, Pasta, breads, etc. I guess I better get used to it, cause I'm going to have to eat those things in real moderation in the future. I am so excited to get to the mushy foods stage, I can't wait! But today I am just going to concentrate on feeling thankful that I feel so much better today! Thanks again everybody who wrote to encourage me! Kathy [link=http://www.TickerFactory.com/weight-loss/wt7yUNu/] [image noborder]http://tickers.TickerFactory.com/ezt/t/wt7yUNu/weight.png[/image]

What did everyone eat 1 week post ok?
-
i was sleeved on monday, july 25th and let me just say that i was totally NOT prepared for the pain and discomfort that i have been thru these past 3 days. I knew it wouldn't be easy but I have been having so much discomfort, its awful. I am home now and must say feel better than the first 2 days. I am having trouble drinking water, i try to drink about 5 - 6 little ounce cups of water per day. I have had sugar free frozen popsicles, and also jello. I also tried some of my protein shake today and it went down ok. My discharge papers says I am to be on a liquid diet for 2 weeks. so maybe some of you can help me out on what you had to eat. and also please tell me that it does get better. ive been reading about some kind of drainage thing, what is that? i have more pain on my right side, i think thats the side they took the stomach out of. ive had a c-section before and this is nottthing like that pain at all, totally different. any encouragement that could be given, id really appreciate it. thanks

I am on day 3 and have the same thing. My sleeve fusses about everything I eat or drink, which isn't much. I feel week and nauseated this afternoon. I don't know what to do.

I am one week post op as well and I am definitely able to get 48-64 ozs in. At first I was having a hard time getting 3-4ozs at a time but each day has gotten better. I can do more than just "sip" too.... There is some miscommunication on your liquid intake cause 8ozs a day is definitely not enough!! How much are you getting in when you add everything together?? You should be getting at least 30g's of protein in as well.

Stomach Swelling! When Does It Go Down?
circa replied to MsThickSlimSexy's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
it varies for everyone - the more you walk and get the gas out, the faster that aspect of it will go down. The swelling from the trauma of the surgery is an individual thing. Mine took about 2 weeks really. Everyone's different though. -

Mine took about three weeks:) -
Well, it's two days after my surgery. I feel better today than I did yesterday that's for sure. The gas pain was the worst yesterday I think. Not so bad today. I have one dose of my pain killer (lortab) left and I don't think I will take it anymore after its gone. The heating pad has been an awesome thing to have. Haven't really had much desire to "eat" anything, I have only had two small shakes and a half cup of yogurt since surgery. I almost wanted to gag trying to eat the yogurt, but I am trying to keep up the Protein. I have been doing some light chores around the house, and went to the store and walked around a bit, trying to be up and moving to get rid of this gas pain which I think is the worst part so far. I am able to remove the dressings today for a shower! Pretty excited about that. Haven't really been nauseous thankfully. Just gassy sore and the port incision is pretty tender. I'm sure tomorrow will be even better yet! I am a side sleeper, so sleeping on my back hasn't been real fun, but I'm hoping to be able to get back to normal there in a couple weeks. Husband has been SUPER AWESOME and I am blessed to have him to help. If anybody wants to keep in touch e-mail wise or anything I would be more than happy! Blessings to all!

Hi! I was banded just over a month ago. I lost around 6 pounds the first week, but only 2 since then. My surgeon has a new doctor in his practice so I haven't seen my surgeon since my actual surgery. I really do not like this new Dr. He made me feel horrible about not losing more weight. I have been doing what I am supposed to but my losing really slow. He just made me feel like he didn't believe me and I was completely honest with him. Anyways, guess I am stuck with the practice for now but wish I had made another choice. I am really curious to know what guidelines other people's doctors have them following. For example, my doctor has me on Low Carb...only 30 carbs a day. I hear other doctors have no restrictions on their patients except them eating smaller portions. I would even be glad to have a calorie limit to follow rather than Low Carb. I know I should do what my Dr recommends, but if other people can eat what they want (healthy) and still lose, then why not?? I would love to find a buddy that I can bounce ideas off of, so PM me if you want to chat. I could really use some advice on the whole Dr thing as well as determining what I should be doing eating wise.

Anyone from Gainesville, Fl.
Ragdolz replied to becca4uf's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Hi Becca, I'm in Middleburg. I contacted the college recently and was told that in three months they would have a surgeon teaching it there, they are currently working out what the cost is going to be. Dr. Cendan says he should be able to tell me what it is going to cost in about two weeks. I do know that St. Vincents Hospital in Jacksonville chares $16,500 for the surgery. Good luck on finding your surgeon! Best, Dotty -
Gall Bladder Surgery 9/20/11
FlyGirl replied to FlyGirl's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I remember having those sharp stabbing back pains a few weeks after surgery and for me it never got bad enough to go to the Dr about it... I just assumed it was kidney pain because I was having a really hard time getting all of my fluids in. If it gets real bad definatly at least call your Dr to see if he thinks you should come in. My gallbladder pains are in the front, right side, right under my rib cage. Now I have read that some people get the back pains as well when they have gb problems. My dr ordered a ultrasound to see if there were stones and a HIDA scan to determine the function %. Good luck, hope you feel better soon. -

Pre-Op Diet.. part of that 60-70%?
OutsideMatchInside replied to Ruth1ess's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
@@Ruth1ess What you are asking is if you can bio-hack your way to more weight loss. No one can give you an answer to that. The 60-70% is an average, It is a completely arbitrary number. Doctors use it because that is the average and its is a good number. Losing that amount of weight is life changing for obese people and can end a lot of medical problems. If you use a calculator like this http://www.obesitycoverage.com/weight-loss-surgeries/gastric-bypass/how-much-can-i-expect-to-lose This is what the calculator estimates I can lose at my starting weight This is what the calculator estimates I can lose from the weight I am at right now. I have lost 101 lbs in 6.5 months with the sleeve. The weight lost estimated from my start is 222. The weight lost estimate from where I am right now is 182. The start weights are 101 pounds apart but the end result is only a 40 pound difference. Is it worth it to wait and have to lose weight taking the chances on being hungry, to possible lose an little extra? It might be to you. The amount of weight you will be able to lose on your own before surgery is unlikely to be that much so the differences will be minor. I would have never lost 100lbs on my own. I would never lose more than 30-50 on my own and I always gained it back. I am only 6.5 months out and I have lost 101 lbs basically effortlessly. I haven't been hungry, and after the first 6 weeks I have had plenty of energy. I am more active, but I don't run. I walk, I do yoga, and I lift weights. I do things that don't stress my body and I am still losing at a fast pace. The way I am dropping weight right now 10-14lbs a month and it isn't slowing, as I lose more weight and am more active, it is coming off faster. I expect that I will blow right past that first lost estimate from my start of 365 to 222, I will probably be past 222 long before my one year anniversary. I expect to keep losing long after my 1 year anniversary just because I would have to be really dedicated to eating, basically eat all day to get above my resting metabolic rate. So try that calculator and see if you think the difference is worth waiting for. Just remember it is just an estimate and it is arbitrary. -

Question: one week out
4me4them replied to tagaroo's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Glad to hear you are on the mend. I had bruises show up for about 2 weeks after...but I tend to bruise easily. -
Hang in there it takes time. it was 9 days for me and my pain to disappear, but after that wow, energy galore. Rem to eat protein foods, shakes etc. Take a shake and vitamins, you really feel a difference. I have averaged 4.35 pounds a week since Jan 4. It's working and also with exercise too, 30 to 45 min 3 times a week. Try it you will see the difference.

Pre-Op Diet.. part of that 60-70%?
VSGAnn2014 replied to Ruth1ess's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Lots of folks here have lost 90 - 100% of their excess weight. IMHO, it doesn't matter how much of it you lose pre-op or post-op. I know you think you're being clear, but I think there's a big misunderstanding. You seem to think there's a finite limit to how much weight you can lose (and no more) that's defined as a percentage of your current weight. Also, there's not deadline or expiration date on your ability to lose weight. How much weight you can lose is a function of a lot of things you said you understand and that you can control and (perhaps) a few things you can't control. Consider that I'm 5'5" tall, lost 19 pounds pre-op (11 pounds on my own 2-month diet and 8 pounds on my surgeon's 2-week diet). My surgery day weight was 216 pounds. I reached my goal (150 pounds) at 8.5 months post-op. In the 9+ months since then I've slowly lost another 15 pounds and now weigh 135 pounds. My BMI is now 22.5. That means I've lost 90 - 100% of my excess weight. And as I said earlier, many people here have done the same. EDIT: P.S. The "frustration" you anticipate "toward the end" would be completely self-imposed. The interesting thing is that this trip you're about to start actually never ends. It just goes on and on and on .... -

Band adjustment question
alilbittyna replied to alilbittyna's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
That makes me feel so much better!!!! I was really scared that this hunger was going to be a forever thing. Dont get me wrong, when I have my "meals" and eat slowly like I am supposed to, I am full for a good amount of time, but before the next mealtime I start with the gnawing hunger. Thank you so much for your input!!! Two and a half weeks to go till fill. I can handle that!!! ; ) -
Newly Banded...and need help!!
snordstrom replied to snordstrom's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Thanks everyone for your input!! I had a little pity party over the weekend but I am back at this week. I can really tell I got a fill as I have been sick several times. I am going to stick to the low carb for now but I hope to one day not to feel like I am on a diet. I was never a huge overeater before but still gained weight each year. I am going to try to not let this guy bother me as I know I have been doing the right things (for the most part). There was a women I was talking to in the waiting room who was a couple of months out and had only lost 6 pounds so I know I am not the only one. I hope it will come off a little easier now that I have had this first fill. -

Too few calories
James Marusek replied to Kirbykendall06's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Your calories are the total of the calories in your meals combined with the calories in your Protein shakes or other protein supplements. The three most important elements after RNY gastric bypass surgery are to meet your daily protein, Fluid and Vitamin requirements. food is secondary because your body is converting your stored fat into the energy that drives your body. Thus you lose weight. So generally forget about counting calories but make sure you meet the protein, fluid and vitamin requirements. Weight loss is achieved after surgery through meal volume control. You begin at 2 ounces (1/4 cup) per meal and gradually over the next year and a half increase the volume to 1 cup per meal. With this minuscule amount of food, it is next to impossible to meet your protein daily requirements by food alone, so therefore you need to rely on supplements such as Protein Shakes. -
Did you have a calorie limit for the pre-op diet?
melissaw1976 replied to dolphintattoo's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
The nutritionist at my hospital gave me a 1200 calorie a day pre op menu. I did it for two weeks before surgery.
