Question about first few weeks weight loss
Veronica Page replied to joleno's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I just got out of the dreaded 3 week stall and it was brutal. I was almost at tears most of the time and it took its toll on me but when I broke it I realized that I was being pretty silly about the whole thing. I would of never lost even close to this much weight without the surgery so I was worried about losing what? ....Three maybe four pounds? If you are truly concerned about it though. Which I was I went back to basics. I went back on the liquid diet. Made sure if anything I got in 50g of protein and 90% of my water. If you choose to eat the pureed stuff just watch for sodium in foods it can tend to hold the water and also vamp up your work out a lil. I broke my stall in about 2 days of doing this. Good luck and don't worry your body does need time for adjustments and you will start to lose again real soon. Good luck! -
If losing weight was easy pre-op people would not have surgery. Stop beating yourself up, that is only going to make your depression and anxiety worse. If you take meds for those, those meds make you hungry. I'm surprised you are having RNY with the conditions, most shrinks say they cannot manage your meds post-op because of restriction and are against RNY in favor of other options that don't have malabsorption. If you know you want to eat instead of not eating and feeling hungry or eating the wrong things keep good options around. Deli meat, grilled meat cut into chips, protein bars, quest chips. There are all kinds of things you can eat and stay on track.

Here is my 2 cents worth: I work out 6 days a week, 3 days 1 hr. cardio (HIIT and Medium mixed), and 3 days weights with 30 min moderate cardio. I eat about 1900 cals a day and it breaks out to about 30% carbs, 50% carbs and 20% fats. I found that this is a 40% deficit in cals, based on my activity levels, and have been at same scale weight for 30+ days. I have seen lower fat levels and slow muscle growth, so I am not too concerned. I have 15 lbs. of fat left to lose, and plan on cycling my calories/carbs soon and I feel my scale stall is partially associated to some metabolism slowing. (Been in big calorie deficit for 9 months now) My revision seems to be much looser and allows me to eat much more than many with RNY do, so getting this much food in is only a little challenging with 5 meals a day. I mostly focus on getting in proper protein, and making carbs fibrous, except right after training, so I am not too concerned with the totals values. My fats come from clean sources only, mostly coconut, flax and olive oils, and lean meats, and I feel high fat levels of the right fats is OK, if we can handle it. It has taken me a while to get to this point and a lot of trial and error to get the right fit, and I am sure you will need to do the same. I suggest tracking your diet and any changes and measure the affect every week or so and adjust again as needed. No trainer know you like you. Best on your journey. . .

It could be useful for current patients to get back down to their goal weight if they have some slide back, or just to get rid of those last 10 lbs. But then again, if we already have those hormonal changes, would this injection do any good for us.

Sorry this happened to you!!! My mom ( who is NOT banded but lost over 100 lbs a decade ago very slowly) had the same thing happen to her last yr. My dh had to rush her to the hospital while i was away. at first her docs thought she had a liver disease but it was her gall bladder. Hers had built up over years. I think it is a risk whenever you lose a great amount of weight. I hope you are feeling better!!!

Thank you Cheri! I hope to be at your weight one day! I will see how I feel tomorrow when I wake up. Maybe I am just exhausted? I have not slept well for the past 2 nights. Crossing my fingers for a better day tomorrow! If not, I will be making a phone call! -

What kind of routine do you have to lose your weight? That was the other question? What are you eating? Exercise, how long and what kind of exercise. Just curious, I seem to be teetering up and down the scale. Not happy. -
What am I doing wrong? I started losing weigh one year ago, on Weight Watchers. Had surgery on 1/23/2012. I lost 45lbs before surgery and 57lbs after. I eat 600-800 calories per day Plenty of liquid, mostly Water. Exercise 1-2 hours/day-walking, hiking, Zumba, recumbant stationary bike, etc (and...rarely sit still for long) Only getting 40-50- gms of Protein most days Eating some fruits and veggies between meals Most months I lose only 6-10lbs 275lbs May 2011 230lbs day of surgery 173.8 today 58.8lbs to go What am I doing wrong? Should I eat fewer calories? My body ALWAYS needed less than most people. As a teen, my doc put me on a 1000 calorie/day diet. I could not lose weight till I eliminated all foods except for veggies and lean protein AND walked at least 2 hours a day, PLUS rode a stationary bike another 1-2 hrs/day. Should I eliminate the fruits and veggies and eat more protein instead? I just get bored eating only ONE food group. I know that the less one needs to lose, the slower it will happen, but...COME ON!!! EVERYONE is losing weight faster, even people in my support group that had less to lose. I am open to any and all suggestions on what I am doing wrong. Also waiting for a response from my NUT, surgeon and surgeon's nurse. (Sent an email to all) I feel like such a disappointment!

When did you realize it had to be surgery for you
Miss Mac replied to leslie1958's topic in Mexico & Self-Pay Weight Loss Surgery
There are a lot of us in this forum who are around your age. I am 61. We all want the same thing....better health and a bigger bucket for our bucket list. It's all I can do now to walk through the drug store with a cane. I want to go to my ancient homeland of the Scotland, but won't be able to do it without losing weight. I am sure we all have goals that can't be realized in our present condition. If you feel you need the surgery, then go for it. We're all rooting for you. -
I walk as often as I can and on average four days a week. Started with about a mile and have been doing 2.5 to 3 miles for quite some time now. I don't jog but I don't saunter either. Guess I'd call it a fast walk. Didn't do any weight training until this week. I lost some muscle mass in my upper arms so I'm trying to get some of that back. But I have to say that I feel absolutely great and look forward to walking. I started walking on my treadmill but soon changed to walking in a park near my home. I enjoy the park more and so does my black lab. I'm 27 weeks post-op and it took several months but at this point I'm really quite addicted to walking. There is absolutely no question in my mind that walking has helped me enormously with the weight loss. I also feel better, physically and mentally, when I walk. I have noticed that I get tense and irritable when I don't walk for two or three days. Can't explain it but it definitely happens.

I do cardio (walking/jogging) on the treadmill on tuesday's and thursdays....on monday, wenesdays and fridays I weight train....so I work out 5 days a week! I'm kinda frustrated because I have only lost 8 lbs in the last 3 weeks and this morning the scale tried to telling me I gained 11 lbs.....I have no clue how that happened!

After my first fill, (4cc's) I gained weight within that month before my 2nd fill........felt like a failure and the Dr. would be upset...turns out he laughed at me....asked me what did I expect?? He then took the time to fully explain the reasons for the fills, what the Green Zone is, and until the band is properly adjusted it will be nothing more than my own will power....(bandster hell) Which we both knew I did not have...if I did I wouldn't be in his office in the first place, having failed so many times at so many diets.....I needed WLS to do what I could not do. .. ..

That's an awesome non scale victory! I know that feeling. I was excited to get a bra from Victoria's Secret for the first time ever! We have to count the small things, that are really major accomplishments for us. I used to be hot ALL the time, now I'm often cold. So I get the sweating thing being a big weight lifted off your shoulders...major congrats, keep it up!

Hi all, Just wanted to check in, I had my first fill 1.75cc today (5 weeks after surgery), I'm happy because last week I was starting to get hungry and it worried me. They told me in the office today that that's not unusal. I did lose another 5lbs since my last weight in 3.5 weeks ago, totally 17 pounds in 5 weeks. I'm a slow loser so that' good for me. Love my Band

I had my surgery in July 2015, and have lost about 80 pounds so far. I have lost a lot of inches and wear all new clothes. I am still working on healthy eating but am doing better. I have listened to my doctor and my dietician, and am exercising regularly. I realize now how bad my health was at my highest weight, and how much better I feel now! I was almost denied because of depression. I failed my first psych evaluation. I had started taking Effexor, an anti-depressant, about 4 weeks prior to that evaluation. Typically, it takes 6 weeks before the Effexor is stabalized in the bloodstream enough to see the full effects. So the psychologist told me I could re-take the test after two more weeks. My test showed that I was still depressed but it was under control now. Severe depression, in remission was his notation on my approval. I think that many of us have weight related complications, both physically and mentally, which need to be under control in order for the surgery and following journey to be a success. Giving up food and the extreme lifestyle change that happens with weightloss can be overwhelming. And if we are already teetering on the edge, well... they don't want to push us over. Talk to your doctor about getting some medical help with the depression and find out if you can be evaluated after you've had time for it to really begin working in your body. Best of luck to you in your journey. Sincerely,

jay22 replied to melidawn's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Yeh I would say it would be ur asthma, but make sure u check in with ur doc just to be safe, I had a lot of pain in my gut but once I started walking it was only my port site that was sore and is still uncomfortable even now (I think that can't take several weeks to feel normal again) It was funny for me up until day 4 I wasn't drinking anything other than juice and Water and day 4 I had my first Protein shake, then day 5 I was hungry so had some fat free tomato Soup then by day 8 I was starving so spoke to my clinics dietician about moving into the pureed phase early and tonight was my first problem night although It was the first night I rememberd not to drink while eating and I only got through half a cup if dinner so yeh the hunger kind of came on from me out of no where really but I had read things about it being a sign u are healing and to talk to ur dr about moving into the next post op diet stage I have done pretty well with my weight so far and have Ben doing a lot of wAlking I am glad I went through with it all -

Thank you for putting it all out there and being blunt about it. I really admire that. I liked that you wrote about the fact that it is still a struggle and weight gain is still possible after 4 years. I really needed to hear that. You are definitely an inspiration! I look forward to continuing to work hard to get to where I want to be too. -
Does Decreased Intake & Calories Cause a Slower Metabolism?
Jachut replied to Sooner's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
That just goes to show how much some WW leaders know. Honestly, the kind of advice people supposedly "in the know" like WW leaders, gym instructors and personal trainers give is sometimes very much a layman's point of view and quite misleading. Many people here would easily know as much about fitness and nutrition as the experts we seem to feel compelled to pay to tell us what we already know, and then tell us some completely untrue facts to boot! Moderate calorie reduction when you were previously stuffing down ten times more than you needed is not starvation and your body is not likely to respond like it is being starved either. You can take in completely adequate calories and nutrition and still lose weight. What happens is that as your body weighs less it needs less calories to fuel and maintain it. No matter what you do exercise wise, although keeping up your body's muscle is great and you should do cardio and strength training to fuel a good healthy metabolism, but still, no matter what, a body that weighs 100lb less is going to require far less calories than it once did. So you will not be able to eat as much as you once did and get away with it. That is not a slower metabolism though, that is just that you dont need that many calories. Now eating under 1000 is getting chancy though, that really is eating very little. But it seems to be what some people have to do, and those are probably people that had slow metabolisms in the FIRST place, not people who have killed their metabolisms by dieting or whatever. We all know people who appear to become and stay very fat on quite normal amounts of food. -
Weight loss pattern - curious
Froggie D replied to Froggie D's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Sorry , it is hard to describe. I feel like I lose from my top roll and my top roll seems to be flatter (the waist on my pants seems to be looser). Then the next day the top roll seems to get bigger again and I feel like I have gained, but I have not gained weight on the scale. The waistband seems to be tighter, but no gain on the scale. Then the next day I will feel like the top roll gets littler, flatter again and my waistband is looser. Maybe it is just bloating. It just seems like a pattern to me. I just wondered if you actually lose from just one spot and then your body redistributes your fat before you lose more, again, from the same spot. -
18 day post-op and have gained 4 pounds......not sure why
settebee replied to MissPrissBecky's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I wouldn't worry too much about it. I gained 2 lbs, but I was drinking high calorie drinks and eating a few dum dum lollipops for 2 days. I've lost those 2 lbs plus 2 more and along with serveral inches. No worries my love! -
18 day post-op and have gained 4 pounds......not sure why
MissPrissBecky posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I had my sleeve on Oct 5th, I lost 11 pounds during my 2 week pre-op diet and another 10 pounds the first 8 days after surgery. I have since gained back 4 pounds of the weight lost and I am not sure why. I am eating the smushy/blended foods but have to eat about an ounce or so every hour or hour and a half to get the 50 grams of Protein in. I am basicly eating the same foods I eat and lost the 11 pounds pre-op but have gained 4 pounds eating them. I am open to any and all suggestions. -
It has been three weeks since I was banded, how my life has changed - I am down 15 pounds - I am happy - I just hope the weight continues to come off. I have changed eating habits - ok - so i didn't follow the recommended diet - But I am still doing good - Dr. didn't yell at me when I told him that i was eating already. He said I was doing so well he wasn't going to fill. I go back in a month. I still have these fears of all the times I was on Weight Watchers - where the weight starts to come off - then slowly comes back - This really has to work.
