I'm a little over a year post-op revision and I still have "dumping" episodes a couple times a week. It was MUCH WORSE the first couple months after surgery. Unfortunately, there isn't really any rhyme or reason to when I dump. Yes, high sugar and high fat items are sometimes a trigger, but overeating anything can have the same result. I get hot flashes, then severe bloating followed by diarrhea. But, dumping does keep me honest when it comes to watching what I eat. And I have to be super careful about my eating when I'm not at home!

17 months post op. Yes I still get sick. I have figured out somethings that will get me but like you said one time for something is okay and then the next time its not oaky. I ended up losing down to 142 from 180 after revision. I pretty much sit at 148. I dont worry about regain anymore which is good. I dont mind the trade off really, it keeps me in check. It does get better the farther out you get just listen to your body. Over eating makes me sick too and in the beginning I could not feel a thing until it was too late and I was already sick. I really have to be careful.

What do I say to get insurance to cover revision when band hasn't slipped?
brandibandtosleeve2012 replied to MaddieJ's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
I had my band for 4 years and while I didn't have complications, it sure didn't work. I went to a different surgeon and he wanted me to work with the band for a while because it wasn't anywhere near full. I asked that we please try to get insurance approval to revise and was initially denied. My surgeon and I decided to keep documenting my work with the band for at least a year. He said if we didn't give it at least a year then they would turn me down again. In that time I developed acid reflux and high blood pressure. The surgeon submitted the letter for approval and I got the approval two days later. It took a lot of time and patience but it finally paid off. I wish you the best in your journey from band to sleeve. -
What do I say to get insurance to cover revision when band hasn't slipped?

Continue to complain of acid reflux and abdominal pain that's why I had my revision -
I am nervous because the insurance is questioning why I should have the revision when my band is intact and not eroded or slipped. If anyone has had good results getting insurance to cover in this situation please let me know what to say to them. The band totally failed for me. I am still hungry after I eat and weigh the same.

Help needed making decision please ( urgent)
Jengo825 replied to dizzy lizzy's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
I had a Lapband gone wrong and had it revised to gastric bypass on July 5. I had the Lapband removal, hiatal hernia repair and gastric all in the same surgery. No complications and very little pain. I didn't go with the sleeve because I have GERD and the doc said that it would get worse with the sleeve. The amount of food I get is just fine. I couldn't hold much with the band either but it doesn't hurt to eat anymore! No GERD at all anymore and I feel great. I still get some fatigue from the surgery but it gets better every day! I was 170, 5'3.5, and a 29.6 BMI. I am very happy I made the decision to do this. If your doc recommended bypass, I'd believe him. He knows what's best for you. At first, I asked for the sleeve. He told me why it was best for my situation to have bypass. Best of luck to you whatever you decide! -
I totally feel the same way! I am having a revision from a band, but unlike you, I gained all my 60 lb back that I lost. My willpower is nil, so I hope someone can give us some encouragement - when is your surgery? Mine is the 19th.

Revision from sleeve to bypass -- stricture and dialation
Aimstergal posted a topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
Hi all. Looks like I'm one of the very few with complications. I stopped losing weight at 6 months and even the first 6 months added up to LESS than what I lost during prior prep! . I was up 4 days a week at the gym at 5am, eating healthy and still, nothing happened. My surgeon and nut were stumped and we did an intensive 6 week study. I saw him weekly, as well as my nut and we tried everything...raising calorie amt, lowering them, etc. nothing. Finally we did a ct scan and discovered a stricture. Top of my stomach healed too tightly and my stomach created a type of side pouch it seems so basically I could get down much more than I should. And that's the main reason I had the surgery!! I couldn't get full and now even with the surgery, same thing was happening. We did an endoscopy this week and not only saw the stricture up close but also discovered after filling up my sleeve with air, that my stomach is extremely thick and elastic and it was heavily dilated. So, I'm facing a revision to gastric bypass on the 16th. 11 months to the day that I had the sleeve surgery. I'm devastated. -

Choosing between SIPS and traditional DS
Strivingforbetter replied to onmyway11's topic in Duodenal Switch Surgery Forum
@onmyway11I had the exact same experience with the band. Then I was revised to the traditional DS two years ago. No regain at this point. The doctor who did my DS is located in Salt Lake City, Utah. -
How much do we eat with mushies??
Parvathi replied to AngelaT's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Every doctor/surgeon is different on this one, just like most other things lol. I was wondering the same thing, as I started mushies today after having a revision surgery two weeks ago. Felt kind of stupid calling as I've done this all before and I should know the answer that mine would give me, but called to double check when I couldn't find it in the paperwork. So for me, its eat until you feel satiated (not stuffed). They said that they wouldn't give me a exact amount, cause half a cup or one cup or whatever, may not make me full .. or it may make me too full. Just eat until I was no longer 'hungry'. That works for me *shrugs*. Last time around, one of the hardest things for me was learning the difference between no longer being hungry and being full. Just like alot of other people out there, prebanding, I ate until I hurt quite often. So finding that fine line was difficult. The easiest way for me to do it, was to make sure I really slowed down and took very small bites (ie, if I'm eating with a teaspoon, I may only eat 1/4 of the teaspoon with each bite). My meals last like 30 minutes or more sometimes, just cause I drag it out that long .. but its worked (or it did with the last band). Let's just hope I can use the same common sense this time around lol. -
I was on the very low end with my T4 levels pre-op with my band, and with my sleeve revision. My revision surgeon said it might resolve on it's own after I lost weight. At my 3 month follow-up, my thyroid levels were right in the middle of the "normal". I just had my labs pulled yesterday, and will get the results Monday. They did an extensive thyroid panel so I'll share the results when I get them on Monday.

Which Procedure do you think is best?
James Marusek replied to Rucamama's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
If you have severe acid reflux (GERD), gastric bypass is better than sleeve because sleeve will only make the condition worse. Too many people who had lap band surgery had to have a revision due to problems. The band will sometimes erode into the stomach wall over time and this can become a life threatening condition. As a result many doctors have discontinues performing this type of surgery. -
Looking for April peeps for RNY (Bypass)
claddagh66 replied to claddagh66's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Are you a revision? I hope and don't see why you wouldn't have just as good of an outcome this time also! I sure hope so! Yes first time for me! RNY. I wanted sleeve but too much acid damage. I'll be getting a hiatal hernia fixed along with my esophagus fixed a liver biopsy and an endoscope done. I'm hoping all goes perfect. I'm extremely nervous! -

Scared of regaining it all!
dreamingsmall replied to BubblyTXGirl's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
In my opinion. A revision is not something to be considered unless all things have been tried. There is an increased risk when going in for another surgery. Also you do not get the reset you get with the first surgery. The best thing to do in my opinion when you gain. Is to: Go back to tracking everything you put in your mouth. Make sure your Fluid is in check. Make sure your Protein goals are reached. Reduce carbs for excelerated loss ( I don't eat low carb but if my loss reduces I up my protein and reduce carbs) When hungry eat protein it's so filling and your working your tool as you really feel the restriction. Make sure to not drink calorific drink's it all adds up. Try and get more sleep. And so on and so fourth. If someone tries this for months and no movement then perhaps discuss a revision but at this stage it seems to soon.. Not to mention the weight creeping up that much from eating once a day (what is it you eat that once a day ?) A dr visit is warranted before a surgeons visit to see if there is anything contributing to the weight gain. That is just my opinion though. Sent from my Vivo 5R using BariatricPal mobile app -
Gastric bypass vs sleeve
Niki15 replied to shay_shay209's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
I chose the bypass for a couple of reasons. 1. The Surgeon advised it would be the best for me as my weight was 363 at 5"9 and I was a bordem eater not over eater . 2. So many stories of people that get the sleeve and later have a revision for the bypass because they gained back weight. -
I currently have a band and am revising to a sleeve in 2 days. I don't understand when VSG patients talk about sliders. With a band, a slider was something that went quickly through my band's restriction, and into the major part of my stomach. With a sleeve, how can you have a slider? Where does it slide to, exactly?

Ok now I have my surgery date which is June 3 however I paid my doctor the $221.27 for whatever I had to pay I can’t remember. Now today the hospital called and informed me that I have to pay 2,821.00 on the date of my surgery or I can’t have it. I told that lady why in the hell would I just not receive this information some people don’t have that type of money. She said we will only accept half and we will bill you for the rest ok but still I don’t have $1400. This is crazy because I should have known this information way before now. When I had the sleeve my doctor had the hospital to tell me what I would have to pay out of pocket and they put me on a three month payment plan before I had my surgery. I actually thought that I wouldn’t have to pay since it was deem medical reason for the revision to bypass. My insurance company said that I hadn’t met my in network out of pocket deductible which is $5,500 some of these insurance companies are complete riff off.

Lapband removed and gaining
kerrik54304 posted a topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
I had my lap-band removed a little over a year ago due to complications. Since then I have gained 30 pounds and growing, and now have a BMI of 35. I met with my surgeon today in hopes of getting a revision to gastric bypass. He does not believe I would qualify due to my BMI not being 40 or above, although my band was removed due to complications. He is still willing to play out the process and see what happens (dietician visits, etc.). He has also ordered a bunch of tests to see if anything shows up that may be obesity related that may help the process. Has anyone else been in the the same or similar situation? What was your outcome? I appreciate any feedback. -
Gastric bypass vs sleeve
Spiceyfrog replied to shay_shay209's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
I chose the bypass for two primary reasons. 1. - I had read about waaaaay too many people have a sleeve to bypass revision and only wanted to do this once. 2. - It was my understanding that with the sleeve you were still able to tolerate sweets and with the bypass they were a lot less tolerated. I know myself when it comes to sweets and I am never satisfied with one of anything! Therefore, I did not want to put myself in a position where I was "allowed" to have sweets because I knew I would not be in control of the situation. Since my surgery in June, I have attempted sweets/sugar twice and dumped both times! -
08 Band Slipped, Sch. consult for Surg - what's next
NaNa replied to Bkhuffman's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
Well if your band has slipped, you need to figure out WHY it slipped. If it slipped from non-compliance and keeping it too tight and vomiting and purging, then it may not be a good idea to get a band replacement. The Sleeve has been a good viable for option for those who've had band slippage, some surgeons wait for the stomach to heal before revising to the Sleeve and some surgeons will do it all in one surgery, I guess depending on the damage and adhesion's left from your band. Also, some people have had slipped bands, learned their lessons and have gotten rebanded, and have been complication free and successful, but from what I've read getting rebanded comes with more risk and everyone is not a candidate for rebanding depending on the damage the band may have caused. Edited to add: I got rebanded last year, and had the old band removed hiatal hernia repaired and new AP band placed, however I did not have band slippage, so your case may be a bit different, I am very happy that I decided to get a new band, it's working great so far. Talk it over with your surgeon, they know more about your medical history and what may be best for you. Good luck! -
I'm planning on revising to the sleeve. I've had problems with my band with vomiting. Not sure if it's from not chewing appropriately or what. But I was just wondering if you don't chew well with the sleeve does it cause problems? I have a class 3 malocclusion. Basically my teeth don't meet in the back and I literally have to push my lower jaw forward to chew. Sometimes I feel this causes problems with me chewing well. So I was just wondering if this will cause problems with the sleeve? I may try to ask my surgeon tomorrow if I remember but I wanted some input from people who have the sleeve TIA
