I am two years from my revision. At this point I eat pretty normally but small portions. I choose to eat low carb and few processed foods. I had the band for10 years and never was comfortable like I am with the sleeve. Good luck!!!

Dr. Kelly vs. Dr. Aceves
LilMissDiva Irene replied to TheSkinnyCow73's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I had my revision with Dr. Aceves - and never have anything but rave reviews for him, the hospital and his staff. That said, I've not come across any bad information about Dr. Kelly except one time. I've also never seen an actual account of that incidence either, it was just hearsay IMO. I KNOW for a fact based on my own personal experience that Dr. Aceves is an excellent choice. Good luck!! -
Hi! It's been a while since I've been online, I was waiting (what seemed like forever) for my surgeon to refer me to an experienced VSG surgeon, and I FINALLY have the consultation appointment this Tues 4/6 at UCLA with Dr.Mehran! I am so nervous, I am scared that they will reject me for the VSG because I am "damaged goods" since I had the band for 7+ years and when they took it out and tried to convert me to the Bypass, my previous surgeon said my insides were too scarred to do the conversion. She did think I was the perfect candidate for the VSG, since they would be cutting out the damaged part of my stomach anyways. Ok, so here's my question: What kinds of questions should I ask the surgeon at UCLA-I don't want to seem like a "know it all" cause I'm not, but I do know a thing or two about the way one feels after weight loss surgery, since I've been through it (and lots of complications). I am so worried that they will reject my case entirely because I am a revision and they have perfect statistics and may not want someone like me to mess up their stats (in case something goes wrong). I attended their seminar and they boast that they are super strict on who they pick to do surgery on- I'm pinning all my hopes on this-I really need this tool ! Since having my lap-band removed I have gained another 10+ pounds and that is with really watching my foods! Sorry to ramble on- Does anyone have some advice on what kinds of questions to ask, or how to let them know just how serious I am? I've got everything organized in a binder, including my most recent labs, and all of my medical history.

canadian who have gone to mexico
Donna replied to andreerichards1's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
I strongly recommend Canadians get banded in Canada or only in the United States if they are very near the border and that is the closest lapband surgeon. If you have any type of complications or when you need the regular fills most doctors in Canada will not touch you because you are not their patient and due to liability issues. Frankly also why should they desire to when you deliberately chose to go to Mexico. Lapband weight loss surgery by the very nature of it necessitates strong aftercare and support and should be a high priority. Donna VBG/87 Revised To Lapband/06 By Dr. Cobourn 251/162/125 goal -
Unable To Fill Because Can't Access Port!
lillieb53 replied to neece1's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I haven't had it happen personally but I have heard it happen to others. Did the doc attempt to use a fluoroscope? My doctor's office used it to locate my port's exact position so they didnt have to prick me more than once after I had a revision surgery and was still sore in the abdomen. -
Revision surgery pre op diet
m.simpson88 replied to Jsteelecat's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
Hello, I had a revision surgery a year ago. The only way I got through the liquid diet was hot beverages. Hot tea and decaf coffee. Sweetened with calorie free sweetener and if I wanted creamer I used fat free half and half with sugar free/calorie free flavored syrups. They curbed my hunger and still do. Same for hot soup and broth. I drank it as hot as I could stand. I tried to also keep myself full off water. The key is to make sure you try to stay ahead of your hunger with the approved options. Try to consume something every 2-3 hours. -
Like everyone else, I am thrilled w/my experience w/Dr. Aceves....my revision couldn't have gone better

Trying to decide if I should just remove my band, or convert
Daenerys Targaryen replied to loridee11's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
I revised band to bypass and am so glad I did. The bypass has a more natural feel. You just get full like a normal person, and I don't have to deal with foods getting stuck and all that. Plus, the weight loss is quicker and better than the band. -
I'm going to St. Agnes with Dr. Averbach. He is doing my revision. Dr Von Rueden did my original RNY in 2005

Surgeons Owens or Oliak in southern California
TriciaC. replied to Busytee's topic in Weight Loss Surgeons & Hospitals
(7) years ago, Oliak did my lap band procedure. Initially I had a (50) pound successful weight loss. But the distance and numerous saline adjustments weren't working for me. I've had many problems with getting "stuck" and vomiting food that was too dense or fibrous. Foods that are supposed to be good for you and able to satiate your appetite. It became a vicious cycle. I am now with another bariatric surgeon named Dr. Quebbemann, trying to get approval for a revision but having problems with my insurance wanting to cover only the band removal but not the gastric sleeve. Very frustrating. From what I remember, Oliak wasn't a warm and fuzzy type of Dr. Most of them aren't, I suppose. I am not familiar with Owens. Is he in the same area as Oliak? My new surgeon is based in Newport Beach and Beverly Hills. He works with Dr. Braverman and I am disappointed that although I voluntarily cancelled my operation the day before, (supposes to be Jan. 16, 2014) neither of them have contacted me to speak about my circumstances. (insurance issues). I thought this was supposed to be a "team" effort. Not the case when the surgeon's office notifies me that only Part of the surgery is going to be paid for by my insurance the DAY BEFORE scheduled surgery. Not cool at all. -
Anyone have the sleeve to bypass revision? I had the sleeve done three years ago and now have regained most of the weight . I would like to have the bypass done but I'm scared. Im worried about the risks . They say your risk for leakage is higher and I'm just so lost now because i don't know if i should have the revision .

5 days & and counting... I started this journey at my highest weight of 245 pounds. I got my lap band in Aug of 2012 & have lost about 90-95 pounds since then. My current weight is about 155-156. It's gone up since my band only has 1cc in it right now. I started experiencing discomfort with my band in April of last year. They took fluid out, then put it back in a month later. Then in August & October, same thing. The last straw was when I was on a mini vacation in NYC in Dec. I wound up in the ER for 15 hours. I'll spare you the details but it was confirmed that my band had a partial slip. They gave me morphine 3 times then dilaudid (something like that) for the pain. It finally worked many hours into my stay there. I had my band placed by a reputable surgeon in Aug of 2012, but am now under a different insurance, Kaiser Permanente of CO, and will have my revision done through them. As it stands right now, since the sleeve is being considered "elective" I will be paying about $12K - $15K out of pocket. Don't get me started because my husband is unemployed & no longer receiving unemployment benefits. Not sure how we'll handle this, but we will. No point in getting upset, though it does rather suck. Have to keep our head up & move forward staying positive. So, after my appointment last week, I found out on Friday that my revision date will be Thursday, the 16th, done as a rush surgery because of the pain that I have with the slipped band. It's not severe but constant. Dr gave me liquid vicodin, which I take once or twice a day, only as needed. My band will be removed at the same time as the sleeve is done. While I was anxious about getting the band back in 2012, I'm even more nervous about getting the revision to the sleeve. Would appreciate any feedback from previous banders to sleevers. I'm trying to read up as much as possible on what to expect so I'm ready. I hope to post on here the day of surgery then a few days later. My goal is to document this journey & potentially help any way headed on the same path. Talk to me people. How did your revision go? What did you drink the first few weeks? Sounds like I"ll be on liquids longer than I was with the band. Oh, I'm definitely anxious. Could use your support. Thanks! Fran

I lost 90 lbs with the band but gained 25 lbs in between surgeries. Now the weight is being stubborn and doesn't want to go away. I do about 45 mins cardio each day.

Major Lap-Band Failure - 8 Years Later - 2-Part Revision Upcoming - Need Support
rosemary79 replied to divaofsongs's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
Getting my lap-band revised to RNY was one of the best decisions that I have ever made! There have been ups and downs since my surgery in May but it has all been worth it. I have lost more weight in these last 3 months than I ever did with the band. I am just 3 lbs away from this fabled place I hear of called "one-derland", I can't wait to see 199 on that scale!! I wish you luck on your new journey, you truly deserve some things to go your way after such a long struggle. -
Need Positive Feedback On This Procedure. Some Reviews Are Very Scary!
LilMissDiva Irene replied to Lisa's Hope's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hi Lisa I'm over 18 months out from my revision from Lap Band to VSG - and I'm doing excellent. I had a blood test only a month ago (have shared the results here) and they are great. The only problem I had is low blood count (anemia - need to up my iron) which is normal for me. I've been anemic pretty much my whole life and runs in my family. Other than that I'm able to keep up with all my supplements and all my levels are right on. I am my own advocate too, so I'm always getting copies of my results to be sure all is well. I DO have a tiny stomach and I'll want to know if anything is borderline or below as it would be a bit more difficult to get them up without quick response and supplements. Anyone who doesn't eat properly has the chance of being malnourished, wether they are thin, or overweight, normal sized stomach or tiny - or whatever the case may be. All the best to you! Do whatever you have to do to be as healthy as you can be. For me, that meant having WLS. -
I would suggest calling Dr. Cobourn's clinic and asking them for feedback regarding this. Donna Banded By Dr. Cobourn/06 Revised From VBG/87 251/142/125 goal

How long was the surgery? How long did you stay in the hospital after your procedure? I'm having my revision in December - I've had the band for almost 10 years. Sucks. -

Banded X 5 Years = Tortured X 5 Years
kekerene replied to bindi's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I was banded in 2006 and had all the same issues you are having. Lost 60 lbs, threw up all my food, heartburn, tired and sluggish all the time. Then I gained it all back plus some when the band slipped out of place on me. The worst 5 years of my life to say the least. I was also cash pay. I paid $17,000 for the band. After it slipped I had a revision to the sleeve on 06/23/11. Best decision ever. I am down 87 pounds and still losing. I do not throw up my food anymore and I feel so healthy and vibrant. I was self pay again for the sleeve and the revision cost me $11,500 in Mexico with Dr. Aceves. It was worth every single penny. I could not be happier -
Anyone get to a NORMAL BMI with VSG?
Tiffykins replied to losingitin2012's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I hit a normal BMI within 8 months of having VSG. My BMI was 50 when I started, and I maintained that weight for a year before pregnancy. I was 263lbs the day of my revision, standing 5'2" and before pregnancy, my weight was 125lbs. So, yes, I'm in a normal BMI for my height. Before going off just getting to a normal BMI, please investigate and research, the regain stats and long term complications on RNY. Also, check out the Revision forum on obesityhelp.com and see just how many RNY patients are looking at revisions because of complications with their pouch/stoma or with significant regain. Think of all the pros and cons of each surgery type. Not just getting to your goal. Maintenance with any of the surgeries is the tough part. Losing was/is disgustingly easy for me, maintaining that's where the work comes in. With RNY, there is no guarantee that you will dump on sugars, only 30% of RNY'ers dump on sugar/fats. You'll only get 2 years on malabsorption of calories/fat/carbs, then after that you have to rely on dieting and your pouch to keep your portions small. I'm not trying to convice (ok maybe I am), but please research every aspect of both surgeries, and go with what is best for you long term. -
Wondering about the doc I might use
Tiffykins replied to kkandrod's topic in Weight Loss Surgeons & Hospitals
I would want to know how many gastrectomies he's performed. A lot or several isn't a solid enough answer for me. My revision hadn't perform a ton of revisions, but he had done over 200 sleeves, and over 400 RNY surgeries, and he had removed several lap bands without revising. So, while that might not of been good enough for some, it was good for me. Plus, he had zero leaks, or deaths with any of his patients. I met one of his patients and she raved about him. I grilled him intensely. I was his first leak, and honestly I can't blame him. The band destroyed my stomach tissue, and we didn't know the extent until he was in there. I honestly don't fault him for my complication. He repaired the leak immediately, and I had a much quicker recovery than other patients that have experienced leaks due to his surgical intervention to repair the leak. A lot of this surgery is about surgical technique. A surgeon can use a standard size bougie and still make big sleeves or leave part of the fundus behind. The 300 number gives more practice therefore perfecting technique. And, of course, decreasing complications due to several surgeries under their belt. Research, ask for patient testimonials, and get as much info on him and his sleeve patient's results. -
Lap band or sleeve? Why did you get revision to sleeve?
okaykay posted a topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
I'm debating between getting the lap band or the sleeve. I see pros and cons for each of them. The main thing I like is that the lap band is reversible and I don't know how I feel about a chunk of my stomach being permanently removed… BUT, I don't like the idea of a foreign object inside me with the band, although with the sleeve theres staples anyways.. Also, there aren't any long term studies on the sleeve yet, which worries me. As you can see I am very torn and I'd love some opinions and advice. Also, I am very curious why so many people with the lap band have it revised to the sleeve.? Let me know if I've been misinformed on any of this. Thanks! -
Lap band or sleeve? Why did you get revision to sleeve?
allielee replied to okaykay's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
I was a huge band supporter, banded in 2008 lost all my weight in 9 months stayed at goal for almost 6 years no problems.. The bam I started having major issues, couldn't keep anything down, for a complete unfill still vomiting.. I followed all the band rules for 6 years! No pasta, no rice no bread no soda.. Never ate more than a cup of food at a time I didn't drink with meals etc.. My band failed. I was devastated. It didn't slip and it wasn't anything to do with me. It had eroded. I still am super upset I paid $18,500 for that damn thing. Yes it helped me to lose the weight I just wish I had had bypass first. I had to be revised from band to bypass on May 21, 2014 and honestly it's been amazing! I haven't had any dumping at all and I am healthy. If you think your band will stick with you I pray you are right but out of the 5 friends of mine who had it I was the only one who's lasted over 5 years. @@2muchfun I understand your eagerness and joy with your band I used to be you. I pray you don't have issues as soooooo many do. I honestly only know of a handful who still have a lapband that is still doing great over 6 years with no issues and I only know of them from these type of posts. -
Lap band or sleeve? Why did you get revision to sleeve?
chris73 replied to okaykay's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
Stay away from the lap band! It is failing at an alarming rate. In my case as with many others I have dilated my esophagus and have been in horrible pain. Vomiting in my sleep. I have been completely unfilled and have severe cramps and sickness. I lost about 50 lbs at my best and gained 20 back in the last few months, going right in line with the failure of the band. Ask your dr directly, "is the band meant to be permanent?" The answer is no! I was not told this up front and would have chosen differently. I am being revised to the sleeve, I feel this is probably the safest choice, after all we are modifying something from its original. The foreign body thing, fillings are hardly a comparison.
