I had my surgery on May 3, 2010 and I started this adventure a year earlier trying to convince my company that this was the right thing to do! I was pretty convincing and they aproved my surgery. On 4/19/2010 I weighed in at 345lbs with a BMI of 49.6. I currenty as of this date weigh 280lbs. I have lost more weight in the last 6 weeks than I had over the past 4 years. My wife said I am loosing it 2 fast but I feel good! This was not without some pain and frustration but that you probably know already. I felt like I had made the mistake of my life the day after surgery but I have since changed my mind. Had I not taken this step I probably would not be here in 3 to 5 years. My wife had a lap band done in 1996 and had great weight loss until 2005 when it broke and damaged her stomach. She had to have an emergency gastric bypass but has had some issues with this surgery. The picture above was from 2006 and I have not had a picture of me taken since. That will be changing! I am having some problems with eating 6 weeks after surgery and I am still having to puree all my food. I have tried multiple times to eat small amounts of food that is not ground up to a pulp and have had no success. I will be seeing my Dr. on Wednesday and this is one issue I want him to talk to me about. I also have a wierd experience when I eat with my nose starts running and I then have to sneeze for about 10 minutes. I thought maybe I had a a food alergie but it happens no matter what I eat. Is this a problem with anybody else? Let me know. I am walking 3.5 miles every day and today I pushed it to 5 miles with no side affects. I plan to step it up a mile a week until I get to the wall! In closing I want to hear from some of you about what issues you are having and maybe we can work together to help each other. Thanks for the support! Jim P.S. the 1SunMoney name is my Poker name.

It being summer do you have access to pool. That is a wonderful way to exercise and keep the weight off the joints. I wish I would do it more often. I'm just lazy lately.

TES replied to kandi p's topic in Mexico & Self-Pay Weight Loss Surgery
-how many VSGs he/she has done -complication rate -average weight lost -amount of time in hospital -what does pre-op testing involve -what about post-op testing...leak test? -post-op care provided by surgeon's office (dietitian, PAs, surgeon, primary care) -what kind of pre-op diet -what kind of post-op diet -is VSG right for you or would he/she recommend a different procedure -does he/she correct hiatal hernias if needed during surgery? in what percentage of patients? -do all patients go on a PPI post-op (gastric protective agent)? -will you get a drain and when does it come out? -will have an abdominal binder post-op (loved mine)? -will you have a catheter in the hospital -how long after surgery can you drink -
A little about me I'm 5'9 245lbs. I'm on the lower end of the bm..predicate with elevated liver enzymes. I've been struggling with my weight my ENTIRE life. My first diet i was about 11. How sad. Anyhow I'm having surgery with Dr. Elias Ortiz through A Lighter me June 22nd. I am curious to know Dr. Ortiz staple technique. Does he use a 3 row stapler? Does he double enfore staples with sutures. I've asked my coordinator Janese these things but it would be nice to hear it first hand from a patient of his. Thanks in advance.

Gastric Sleeve And This Will Help Me?
Texasgirl73 replied to momofthree's topic in Mexico & Self-Pay Weight Loss Surgery
Hi Momofthree...I have not had my surgery yet, but it is scheduled for March 13th with Dr. Alvarez. My husband has said the exact same thing to me. He supports me, but is worried about failure once again. I think it comes from seeing me work so hard to lose the weight on so many diets only to see it come back a little at a time plus an extra few pounds. I know he loves me the size that I am, but knows my quality of life is not 100% at my current size. He does not want this to fail for me as much as for himself. I'm self pay so its not like we are only paying some co-pays or even 20%.....this is a pretty big investment, but I know and he knows i'm worth it. Lots of luck, stick around here you'll get lots of support. -
Survive Gastric bypass pre op diet
danirose replied to liiarod's topic in Pre-op Diets and Questions
Hey...I just started my 2 week diet today! I drank my protein drink for breakfast. It was kind of gross but there's 40g of protein so I actually feel really full! I was told I can have a small meal like weight watchers or lean cuisine for dinner. We can help each other through this! -
lapband in mexico, have some questions
mansaw replied to bartman22's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
I am getting mine done at the OCC in Mexico on Dec 22 by Dr. Martinez. I am able to get fills free at the Grande Prairie hospital with an order from my family doctor  I am sooooo excited ( and nervous of course! ) OH! Also - Alberta Health care said they would re-emburse me roughly $1700 - and my private health insurance will pay for the rest - I never thought they would but called to ask. They said as long as my doctor would give them a letter stating why - which is to hopefully assist in lowering myblood pressure after the weight is gone. She had no problem doing this and now will be getting the money back - yup, even from mexico. So you never know! The worst they can say is no! I would get it in Canada - but our health insurance is such that we have $2500 per family member and for the year we only have $5600 left so that is all I can get back. Plus, since its the end of the year I dont mind using it...if it were in January I wouldnt use it in case we needed it for kids dental or anything else! -
Not loosing enough weight during pre-op diet.
cogaz posted a topic in Mexico & Self-Pay Weight Loss Surgery
Does anyone know if a patient has been denied surgery due to not losing enough weight during pre-op diet? I ask because I gained about 10# during the holiday since turning in my health questionnaire. So far I'm following pre-op to a t but will probably weigh the same as listed in the health q I filled out 2 months ago. -
I go in on June 10th for my first fill. After asking my doctor how much of a fill he'd be giving me, he told me just 1cc.....I was hoping for more, as I have read else where on threads that they get 3cc on their first fills. I'm a bit jealous! But then again maybe not, as I don't want to much restriction to quickly. Hey everybody, is this normal for a 8cc band to get only 1cc on my first fill? Just wanting to lose more weight than I have so far......it's been a slow process. Had surgery on April 21st and have only lost 12 lbs so far.:crying: Oh yeah....how do I edit my ticker to change the weight loss???

7 Month Bandiversary - 95 Pounds Gone!!!!!!!
Allison0927 posted a topic in Weight Loss Surgery Success Stories
Just a hopeful note for all the would be bandsters out there and the newbys. I never EVER thought I'd be posting something like this - I had read others' successful posts and still thought "that's them but i'll never get there". WELL... HERE I AM!!!!! I cannot believe I'm closing in on 100 pounds but it's happening! I'm so, so grateful to every one of you on this site that encourages and helps and spreads positivity. This site is wonderful and a big part of my success, I am sure of it. For anyone wanting my "tips" to the loss - here they are: It took me 5 fills and 4.5 months to feel ANY restriction. I now have 8.5ccs in 14cc band. I do not know if I'm in the green zone but I do have restriction and things get stuck and "hurt" going down when I do not chew well enough etc. This helps me psychologically because it makes me more disinterested in food (i.e., takes the "sport" or "fun" of eating away - which is what got me morbidly obese to begin with). Per my surgeon I'm at 800 calories per day - I stick to this about 85%-90% of time. I have a "cheat" day about once every week to 10 days. I go to about 1200 calories or so on that day. My surgeon and nurse care manager at health insurance both say this is actually a good idea as it keeps the body from plateauing (sp? LOL) by shaking things up a bit. I've hardly exercised - my guilty little secret is that I am waiting to "kick in" the exercise when I hit a plateau which I have not done yet. I know, I know, this is not good - it's my one "bad bandster" issue but I know I'll HAVE to do it at some point either because of a plateau or to maintain once at goal. I tell anyone that asks me how i'm losing the weight about the band (and I educate them on it when they seem interested/ask questions). This works for me because I care way too much what people think and it holds me very accountable - in other words I'd do about anything to avoid the embarassment of gaining weight when others know I had the surgery. Again, this works for me - not everyone. That's about it. YOU ARE ALL TRULY A BLESSING AND I LOVE THIS SITE. BEST OF LUCK TO US ALL ON OUR JOURNEYS!!!!!!!!!! -

ok, ladies and gents lets remove negative words, like cheating, or bad from our vocabulary,, unless your married and going out with someone your not married to cheating should be band from this forum. We are all different, we eat differently, gain and lose differently, this band works differently for each of us. Because we chose to modify how we follow the "guidelines" we were given does not make us Cheaters. So Stop using those types of words. You are making a recipe for your life, you are taking all the information you are recieiving and deciphering it, mixing it up and using what works for YOU. That is what this is all about. If one thing worked for all of us, trust me we wouldnt need the band, we would have only needed the one and only first diet pill or program that worked for the very first person that used it. RIGHT!! Our Dr's are all giving us what they believe to be the best advice in their opinion and experience, for the most part, but we are not robots, we are taking charge of our lives with this band and need to experiment, which part of this will work for you. What works for me. I know I can tell you many of the things that have worked for me do not work for many of you, WHY? I couldnt tell you except to say, we are different, our mental approach is different, physical and emotional approach. We can all succeed though. Trust your own intelligent minds to guide you and make good choices with good information. YOU CAN DO IT. WE ALL CAN. I was banded in March and have steadily lost since then, with no regrets, no problems, only 3 fills, none since May,, I have been away all summer with no Dr or support system but have been able to use my tools to keep losing, eat what I want and have no bad side affects, I do have friends that are not as fortunate as I am, they cant touch Pasta, I can, They cant eat bread, I can, But they are losing just in a different way, I have to be more careful, because I can eat whatever I want I have to really take care not to over do it. What the Dr gives us is a set of guidelines,, from there just use common sense and you should be fine. Take into account any special medical conditions you may have also, and keep asking questions. Its like making a recipe, you keep trying new ingredients until you get it just right for you. Good luck,, so far I have lost 49lbs, and still losing. Sugarbear

Hi Shortgal & Sharona, Thanks for your words of support. Shortgal, your weightloss is great! Anything "lost" is always a plus. It's the up and down that I couldn't take anymore. I had did Jenny Craig for about 2 months, but besides being expensive to stay on, when I stopped I gained all the weight back, and plus some!! That's when I started thinking that the smaller portions do work, I lost 15 lbs, but when I stopped, like I said it all came back as usual. That's what really got me thinking about the band. Two of my friends had done gastric bypass about 8 years ago. One did and is still doing great! She follows exactly how she is to eat and drink and watches her portions. The other has stretched her pouch to where she is eating as much, if not more, than when she began. Watching both of them, I feel that I am ready to take on this new lifestyle. I think I'll be more careful about my choices and I do realize this only a TOOL to help me lose the weight. It is not a guarantee. I have about 100 lbs. to lose. You both are doing so well, and are a great inspiration to me to know that it actually can be done!

Just about 10 months out ... Struggling
lissette86 posted a topic in Weight Loss Surgery Success Stories
Surgery date : 8/16/2013 Pre surgery : 287 Surgery day : 251 Now : 180.1 Height: 5'4'' Just a little over 100 lbs down and I've been struggling to loose weight for about a month now. I've tied changing my work outs and swimming more but it hasn't helped because I find myself more hungry after swimming. I also have started taking more vitamin D and I feel like with all the vitamins , b12, and other meds it's just been very stressful to be stuck at the same weight for so long ... Any else struggle at this mark ..... Thanks for any support - Lissette -
For me using an online calorie calculator really helped. Don't think I could have done it without that, I'm not mathematically inclined... Anyway, I started at BMI 36 and am now down to about BMI 22.5. I never ate just 600 calories after the mushy food stage but started around 850 and while losing I gradually increased it to about 1100. It suited me fine and I lost all the weight in about nine months, which was certainly quick enough. Now that I'm maintaining I don't count calories anymore, I simply step on the scales once a week and adjust accordingly.

I did ask my surgeon and she said as long as it’s just body weight like air squats and not abdominal it’s okay in small amounts. I definitely want to be cautious and not hurt myself. Just ready to get healthier, ya know? -
New York City vacation recommendations
gowalking replied to tysoaj's topic in Post-op Diets and Questions
OK, so do you want quality or touristy? Not that you can't have both but alot of the best restaurants are not well known outside of the city. As you know, it's Protein first, veggies and then carbs so I would say you should stick with places that can offer you and your sister that option. FYI, I am banded, my sister is not, and we eat out together all the time. If you want great fish, Oceana is terrific as is most Greek restaurants. Fresh and simply grilled. You can't beat it. If you can tolerate meat, one of the most iconic steak houses is The Old Homestead. The meat is top notch and it reeks of 'old New York'. If you want to step into a time warp, Spice Market in The Meatpacking District is amazing. Like you've walked into a 1930's Shanghai bar. The food is terrific as well...especially the cod. If you want small plates...tapas...Alta on West 10th St. in the West Village is the place. This way you and sis can share a few items. The brussel sprouts is to die for...and so is the Sangria...lol. If you want something like pastrami or corned beef, Carnegie Deli is OK but Katz's on the Lower East Side is better and really iconic as well. Just know that the meat is very sodium laden and you will have Water weight gain for sure. I agree that Chinatown and Little Italy are places you should explore and as long as you eat sensibly, you will be fine. Everyone who visits Chinatown should experience a Dim Sum Palace. It's amazing.... If you like 'ethnic' food, I can recommend Turkish, Russian, Italian, Mexican, Spanish...even more exotic like Ethiopian and Afghan restaurants as well. Just let me know how adventurous you are. Feel free to PM with any questions you may have. As Lisa notes...I live here in the city and know it very well. I can recommend restaurants and sightseeing options as well. -
Exercising more than ever & barely loosing
rharriet62 replied to Bostongurl's topic in Fitness & Exercise
Well, I wish you all lived in Wyoming and we could all work out together (LOTS) and commiserate with each other! I work out 2 hours a day and the weight loss seems slower than ever. UG. But, like you, I am enjoying the new lifestyle of working out and and have met some great friends! Just think of all the good things happening INSIDE our bodies that we can't see! YAHOO! -
It has been a LONG road getting here, BUT, I have a date and will be banded on the 28th of Nov. '07. Yippy! I had no idea there was a Nov 07 board. So I guess this is my Official introduction. I am 400 Lbs and a 52 BMI, male. I figure since I am male I will hopefully lose weight faster. I just wanted to say howdy to all and I am glad to be here. Cant wait to have the band placed! Later, Craig

Exercising more than ever & barely loosing
deckedout replied to Bostongurl's topic in Fitness & Exercise
I'm having the same thing. Swimming laps for 40 minutes 5 days a week, plus 3 days a week weight training and treadmill. I've been doing this for 8 weeks and have lost a total of 2 lbs! But, I feel much better and stronger. Plus, people keep telling me I look like I'm losing, so.. . Saturday, I get out the measuring tape. That will be my 5 month since measuring before banding, and 3 months since last recorded measurements. It is so much easier to jump on the scale. -
Exercising more than ever & barely loosing
Wheetsin replied to Bostongurl's topic in Fitness & Exercise
Just like the pierced one said -- working out more = building more muscle. Muscle weighs more than fat. It also helps you burn more calories. So you're metabolism is more active, and you should be shrinking, even though you aren't losing pounds. Keep in mind that fat does not equal weight. Your weight is everything - your skin & all the goodies bundled up inside of it. Fat is just a part of your weight. -
Exercising more than ever & barely loosing
Telly replied to Bostongurl's topic in Fitness & Exercise
You are plateauing b/c you aren't eating enough. If you as active as I am then you need to up your protein and carbs. Your body is stuck at a cycle where you maintain b/c it's used to your caloric intake. If you "UP" your calories and still have the same workout routine.. your body will then "let go" of starvation mode and allow you to lose again. Try it for a week. Up your calories by 200 a day. Eat more carbs... eat a potato right after a workout and up your protein to about 170g per day, 99 - 120 carbs per day and watch the weight come off. -
Exercising more than ever & barely loosing
Telly replied to Bostongurl's topic in Fitness & Exercise
That's what happened to me several times. I would finally just let go and eat more and "BAM", the loss would surprise me. Lately I've been on a plateau and a friend reminded me to "just eat more" and my weight is coming off again, actually I need to update my sig info. Try not to weigh everyday if you can help it. Weigh once per week and at first, you'll probably eat more and see that the scale hasn't gone up or down, it's the same which is cool b/c you are eating more. Then a week or so later, the scale moves down. -
Exercising more than ever & barely loosing
Woodys replied to Bostongurl's topic in Fitness & Exercise
I own a fitness centre based on the Curves concept. Everything that Wheetsin said is bang on right. Take your measurements.....I'm sure you'll notice a difference there.....you don't always have to measure a favourable change in your body by the scale. A pound is a pound....so a pound of muscle weighs the same as a pound of fat....however, volume is where the two are different. A pound of fat takes up more space on your body than a pound of muscle. Also, when you engage in an active consistant exercise routine your body will automatically start to retain Water to protect it from dehydrating...hence, one more reason the scale may not be showing a significant drop. Healthy muscle mass is instrumental in weight loss. Like Wheetsin said...it boosts the metabolism therefore increasing your fat burning ability. Continue to eat properly, lots of Protein, because the body is only capable of losing 2 pounds of body fat per week, if you are losing more than that it is coming from lean tissue and muscle mass.....and we already know why we need to protect and enhance our muscle mass. Keep up the exercise...in the long run you will thank yourself for it...you will begin to notice much more than just a change in your body size....you will breathe better, sleep better, have increased appetite control, and have an increase in stamina and endurance (hope I don't offend you but even sex gets better!) Also, it will not eliminate the problem of sagging skin, but if the muscles under the sagging skin are toned and strong it does help a bit. It depends a lot on your age too, but the skin has a chance of looking better if there is strong toned muscle underneath. Hope this info makes you feel a bit better regarding your concerns. Carol
