    August 2023 Surgery Buddies!

I am taking biotin 10,000 mcg, vital Proteins Collagen with my morning shake, and skin hair and nails supplement now before surgery to hopefully help with that, we shall see
  2. I sure hope so. I know I need to get back my positive attitude (like during my pre-op dieting, when I lost about 30 lbs in as many days). It's just hard with all the other things happening to me right now with the weight loss stall, insomnia, night cramps, skin issues, and lack of energy. I really just want everything to balance out already. Thank you for the encouragement, though.
  3. I was ignorant about the differences between procedures when I was looking into doing the surgery, however had a close friend and family member who each had done one procedure both in April of last year. Based on their experience post op, the rerouting of the intestine and the fact that I didn't want to loose it to fast with the idea of giving my skin time, and learning to fuel my body, I went with the sleeve.

    Complaining

I used to shed the usual 50-100 strands per day prior to surgery, plus my hair was brittle and thin. I was advised by the RN to keep hair loose as much as possible, take biotin for new hair growth, avoid treatments or heat, and was only once a week. While I was doing that the first few months, it did increase a little bit, but wasn't as alarming since I had cut my hair from hips to shoulder length one month post op. Now at 8 months post op, I have started to wash it 2x per week, and can definitely see more shedding. I have reduced the brushing to once a day, try to keep it as loose as possible (no messy buns) and started using some natural hair drops that stimulate growth and help with dryness. I suspect it will be a few more months of excess shedding for me, I'm just glad there is no bald spots.
  5. Congratulations on making goal! I did still loose and loose when the weather and my activities change. Fixing the low iron problem got me to onederland. Staying in a healthy iron range is proving to be the harder effort. Oh, and my calories can go to 1200-1500 if I’m including a hamburger or meatballs. For me it seems to be what I eat that makes a difference, not the calories so much. I’m 5’4” and moderately active. I lost weight bumping up calories with nutritious choices. I logged food and weighed myself to figure it out, mostly it is religiously getting the iron.
  6. This is a post about my skin issues. https://www.bariatricpal.com/topic/444157-wtf-with-the-dry-skin/
  7. Hi Carmen, That is exactly how I feel, just heart broken and sad. What is happening with your skin? I am sorry that you are feeling the same way as I am, but it does make me feel better and a little more normal to hear that I am not alone. When I asked my doc about it she said she has seen "some" patients with this issue, but it didnt sound like too many. She did ask about the vitamin D but my pre-op blood work said it was too high and they told me to stop. I do have a script to get the 3 month blood panel done. You did make me laugh with the baking bread in their mailboxes lol Good luck to you and thank you for sharing your experiences

    Need advice

I’m a year po gastric sleeve start weight was 218.4 kg (34.4st) I’m now 142.4 kg (22.4 st) thinking of doing a restart as I’m not loosing anything for the past 6 months I’m doing everything right but I’m getting despondent at this point dietician said to up my gym time which I have done but still I’m at a loss for what to do
  9. I'm sorry you're feeling this way. My surgery was 6/19/23, and I'm in the same boat with my moods and feelings. I've been at a stall since July 3rd. Today, I weighed myself (even though I swore I'd wait til Sunday) and I've only lost 2 lbs since July 3rd. Two pounds in almost 3 weeks. That's it. I'm also a revision from sleeve to bypass. I knew it would be slower than virgin surgeries, but not THIS slow. It's breaking my heart, honestly. I'm following the whole nutrition/vitamin routine, but nothing is changing. Now, I'm having trouble with my skin. I feel very let down. I totally feel you on the jealousy/insecurity stuff. I'm that way. But I've ALWAYS been that way. Also, probably due to my weight. Can't blame my surgery though. I'm going to research that Probiotics Mood stuff you mentioned. I'll mention it to my doc's office. We have to be our own biggest advocates because we're the only ones who know how we feel now as compared to how we normally feel. They don't really know us from any other patient they see. I'm going to request a blood work order. They haven't asked for any. One of the girls at the office said they don't usually until the 3-month mark. I don't want to wait 3 months. Maybe going outside and getting some Vitamin D would help? I'd hang out outside if I didn't live in South Texas where people are baking bread in their mailboxes and baking cookies in their cars. Hope you feel better, ma. 💛
  10. Oh, yes, the hormones. Ugh... I am still dealing with acne at 40, so I feel your pain. Dermatology is very helpful. I'm on 2 topical prescription creams and an oral medication to help control my acne. My skin overall has gotten drier since surgery. I use an in shower moisturizer and another one once I get out and dry off. It's help my body skin a lot. I also use a heavier cream at night on my face. Just be careful if you're acne prone on which products you use.

    No Loose Skin

I agree with everyone on here. It is not a problem unless she is getting a yeast infection under the skin flap, or sores under there. Otherwise she can leave it, there is no medical need to have it removed.
  12. I thought hormonal flush too. Personally my skin seemed to get less dry specifically on my arms & legs. It’s funny how we all react differently. Maybe see a dermatologist or just your GP for something you could use on the dry skin patches. It could be possible you are getting in more B12 than you need. Have you had a blood test recently to check your levels to rule that out? Recitalist contains vitamin A (retinol), albeit a rather low level (0.3%, but that can cause dry skin patches too. Are you applying a sunscreen to protect against a sun reaction with the retinol? Damn acne. I’m 58 (tomorrow) & every now & then I still get a pimple. Had a blind one on my chin a couple of weeks ago & then a run of the mill one of my cheek last week. I had terrible cystic acne as a teenager (11+ years of hideous skin) so feel I’ve more than had my share of acne & am soooo over it. When does it ever stop. Waah! PS - I’ve been using the L’Oréal midnight cream & serum (only cones as a night cream). It’s lovely. I’ve been using L’Oréal products for years but this one is the best so far. Even got my 83 yr old mother on it & she’s a convert too.
  13. a lot of women experience hormone surges after surgery because estrogen is stored in fat cells - so it could be that. If so, that's temporary. Also, maybe your skin is drier since you're taking in fewer fats now?
  14. I had very recently just become so proud of my skin. In May, when I started dieting, I was so happy because my hormonal (menopause) chin acne disappeared and some small flaky, dry patches on my cheeks went away. My skin was looking and feeling so great! Before this summer I'd NEVER (and I just turned 49, I know, I know, BAD ME!) used any skin care products. I had no routine. I'd just apply my makeup and then remove it when I washed my face. This was daily. This summer I started feeling my mortality because my 49th birthday was July 2nd. I was TikTok influenced and bought the Loreal Revitalift eye serum, face serum, and moisturizer. The products, along with the weight loss REALLY helped my skin. It looked so great and I was even complimented on it by my sisters. But then... About 3 days ago, I noticed my skin was getting little dry, flaky spots on my cheeks. Also, I've got a little bit of that hormonal chin acne, not a lot, but still. Ugh! =( I'm trying to figure out what's causing it. I read that an overload of certain vitamins (B12 was specifically mentioned) will cause the dry, flaky skin. Not only that, they can also cause non-diabetic Acanthosis nigricans! I'm worried and I really hope that all the vitamins I have to take now aren't going to cause my skin to look like crap again. I may be losing my mind, but I have a small patch on my neck that's sometimes itchy and feels like acanthosis when I touch it. Even my daughter noticed it. I've never been diabetic. I can't imagine actually getting acanthosis now due to my new diet/vitamin/supplement routine that's supposed to be for life. Ideas? Thoughts? Suggestions? Experiences?

    Exercise Before Surgery

Starting to exercise 3 weeks before surgery isn’t gonna change much of anything. Besides you can’t exercise for 6 weeks after. When your six weeks are up ease into something slowly. Hopefully loosing weight will make it easier on your body to move more without being in pain. Best of luck on your surgery & weight loss!
  16. Great post. I’m a year out, and I like to think I’ve changed my eating habits somewhat. Then again, I’m on vacation now with some friends, and every time someone puts out food or snacks I’m like a kid let loose in a candy store. I marvel at the non sleeved people who have greater self control than me and just know intuitively when to take a bit and when they don’t need any. Umm, where was I when they gave out that intuition? Maybe it’s because to me, vacation mode always meant indulging all the way? It’s truly one step forward, 2 steps back when it comes to changing my deeply ingrained habits, learning how to really listen to my hunger and fullness cues, and to tune in to what my body needs nutrition wise. It’s not easy!!! It took me years and years to develop these bad habits, I guess I can’t expect it to be so easily changed. I try to remember how good I feel when I listen to my body and give it the healthy nourishment it needs and how gross i feel after going on a junk spree…

    No Loose Skin

If she is concerned she should discuss that with her doctor. Unless she has some special concerns about her skin that aren't being said here (such as a dermatological condition), loose skin is not generally harmful. It's primarily an aesthetic concern. Most of the time, the worst thing it will do to you is make you self-conscious.

    No Loose Skin

Safe for her to keep it all stuffed into her girdle and tights .I was worried that she'd catch it with her nail , (she has very bad arthritis in her hands ) and some of the skin might rip and be a cause of infection .

    No Loose Skin

Safe for her to leave what exactly? The house? Loose skin isn't going to harm her unless it's causing rashes or some kind of infection.

I stopped losing weight after VSG

I agree with the above post, speak to your team and review what you are eating and drinking every day. I tend to not loose much if I eat too little, and do not drink enough fluids.

    No Loose Skin

You can never predict how much loose skin you end up with. Too many factors influence the end result even with siblings. Then the next questions your sister might ask herself are: Does the loose skin impede you - from doing every day tasks or being more active? Does it make dressing difficult - have to go up sizes, clothes don’t fit well, can’t hide it easily, etc.? Do you have rashes or infections? Does it affect how you see yourself, confidence, etc.? I have some loose skin, not a lot. It doesn’t restrict my activity. It doesn’t limit my clothing choices & I can dress easily to cover it. It hasn’t affected my self confidence either. So for me I didn’t think it necessary to consider skin removal surgery. It’s very much a personal decision.

    No Loose Skin

As long as it's not causing any rashes or skin infections, it's not harmful.
  23. I thought I would have , but I haven't .But I am worried about my sister who went on a normal diet(no surgery ) ,as she's got lots of hanging loose skin on her belly .Is it safe for her to leave ? I'm 67 and she's 70.

    WL Question

Hey Eva, wondering how are you now with the weight loss? Im struggling myself... im in week 8 and from 2 to 7 didnt loose anything.
  25. I just met with my surgeon yesterday for my 6 mo post op visit. I brought up this same question as my sagging skin is becoming more apparent as I continue to lose (at 90 lbs lost). He said that most insurance will pay for this procedure as a cause of Bariatric surgery and done by a plastic surgeon. He mentioned that you need to first lose all the weight, then maintain that weight for at least 6 months, before they would approve the surgery. He stated arm or leg skin surgery would not be covered but tummy tuck was. I was hopeful to hear this although I have not gone through the process yet to vet the accuracy. I’m sure it depends on your specific insurance plan benefits and worth a call.
