Loose Skin? Lap Band Success Stories?
parisshel replied to free.spirit's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
I echo the advice of those above: do your research on a different type of WLS other than the lapband. Even if you find a surgeon to place yours, there are fewer and fewer surgeons and fill/unfill facilities so if you have issues down the line, you may not find someone with the background and experience to help you out. Lapbands were a big trend years ago but are seen as arcane now. Today's trend is the Sleeve...this also may one day go the way of the band. The Gold Standard is the Bypass which has decades of data supporting its efficacy. (It is also reversible if needed.) With that said, I have had a band in place for almost 8 years. I'm one of its rare success stories with no issues. While I never made it to goal (my starting weight was similar to yours), I'm at a weight that is fine for me. No significant regains really, but when I do start climbing back up the scale, I know what to cut out. Not sure if I still have restriction/hunger dimmed by my band....I do a lot of the maintenance work myself. I had loose skin but I'm much older than you. It wasn't due to "quick" weight loss---my weight came off at the same rate as a traditional diet such as WW. It was just from having been obese. So two years ago, at age 60, I had a tummy tuck. It was absolutely life-changing. Best thing I ever did for myself. Not only do I love my tummy for the first time in my life, but having had plastics ensures that I keep my weight off and keep exercising....I would never want to ruin the results of the tummy tuck. Here's a photo of my tummy now---90% of this is the tummy tuck, 10% of it is my core work that I do every day to keep everything strong and toned. Sorry this photo is so large....something happens when I upload photos to this site. Normally it is much smaller! Good luck as you move forward but please: do your research, talk to other WLS patients to see their experience with the different surgeries out there. -
I do low fat to no fat, because too much fat in my diet upsets my stomach. I had a different surgery though, but it's the malabsorption imo that causes the issue and gastric bypass also has malabsorption so... I'd just be careful.

Gastric Sleevr Vs. Bypass
NYCGirl9269 replied to NYCGirl9269's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
First of all I just wanna say congratulations on your success! All of the points you gave on why you chose to go with the sleeve sounds a lot like me which is why I know my Dr. Is gonna push for the sleeve lol. And im less afraid to go with that too. I'm afraid of dumping syndrome, of meds and vitamins not being absorbed enough, or having my intestines rerouted. Etc. The only thing that bothers me is why the statistics say the sleevers lose 60-70% excess weight and bypass lose more. I'm asking from a completely objective standpoint - if both surgeries are just as easy to fail as they are to succeed, why do the research charts show this difference? Also, I wanted to ask, did you get to choose the size boujie you wanted for your sleeve or know what size Dr used for you?? Also, did you cravings and hunger completely return after 6 months or it does but slightly? Lastly, can you just do complete keto during the first year after surgery so you stay under 20 net carbs and in ketosis? Or our body doesn't need to be in fat burning mode because of the surgery? Feeling Depressed Due to Complications
Sara_Lee replied to Sara_Lee's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'm sorry to hear that. I drank a tall glass of water yesterday and woke up feeling okay. I was terrified I would vomit. I think getting liquids in is more important than even food at this stage. What are you drinking? I need to up my nausea meds because they are useless right now. I really hope this is not the new normal. Did your surgeon tell you that a bypass is better? -
Trouble finding ready to drink protein shake
RhondaHigdon posted a topic in Post-op Diets and Questions
I just had my Gastric Bypass on Jan 12th, and my Dr. started me on ready-to-drink protein shakes in the hospital. They had the brand "Oh Yeah" in vanilla. I loved them. I got home spent $65 on the only web-site I could find them in stock, and I received them this morning the 17th. They taste terrible to me!! I had been trying to drink the Fairlife with 24grams of protein, but could barely get them down. Well, now that the "Oh Yeah" are here they taste terrible??? What is wrong with me? I feel like I just don't know what to do. I can't afford to waste money like that and now I feel like I have to drink them, but they aren't setteling on my stomach like they were, and the taste? I just don't know what to think. Any advise please, I would be so greatful. Thanks Rhonda -
Gastric Sleevr Vs. Bypass
NYCGirl9269 replied to NYCGirl9269's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
Wait, you mean to tell me most people who start at 300 don't reach at BMI under 30??? 10-15% only??? Thats not what I'm seeing across these boards, both surgeries people losing most if not all their weight , including my friend who had bypass 10 years ago she was 450 lbs, still having trouble putting back on weight since hes only 70 lbs now, but on here and on YouTube I see most people reach their goal with the surgeries...to me its a matter of keeping it off , and I wanted the bypass because it's easier to lose 20-30 lbs more than ur goal weight so that when u regain a few, you stop at your goal weight. Due to the malabsoprtion qualities it's easier to lose passed your goal weight in that first year so I wanna take advantage of that first year but I can't get malabsorption due to the meds I'm not willing to stop forever Sent from my SM-N986U using BariatricPal mobile app -
Gastric Sleevr Vs. Bypass
ecugsplgrl replied to NYCGirl9269's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
have you considered the Duodenal Switch? It is a sleeve in conjunction with intestinal bypass for malabsorption. not a lot of surgeons do it routinely, but I have been very pleased with my results this far (3 months out) and research shows that weight loss retention is most successful with this surgery. -
I have not had a drink yet, but people in my support group say a few things about it: you get drunk really fast and it goes through your system quickly, so it is easy to have a lot of alcohol in one night and not in a good way (when the effects wear off so quickly). They also say it is an easy addiction transfer with bypass. Lastly, some dump with alcohol. Everyone recommends trying it at home at a non-event so that you can see how it hits you. But you might not be able to drink again. I wouldn’t anyway if GERD was an issue.

Gastric Sleevr Vs. Bypass
Gregory822 replied to NYCGirl9269's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
The bypass and sleeve are very similar. I’ve seen you comment about people who’ve gotten back their weight, but my girlfriend and her mom did the sleeve 5 years ago and they have kept all their weight off. I have friends who’ve done the sleeve 2-3 years backs and they are still in great shape(no weight gain after 2-3 years). People who gain weight years after are people who start eating unhealthy and don’t follow the plan their Bariatric team has given them. My friend was 298 and in 9 months lost 150 pounds. She exercised and followed her diet. Simple. What is this myth you talk about? 18 month window? You’re always going to keep losing until you start eating to maintain your ideal weight. There is no window that magically stops you from losing. Who is giving you this information? -
I was very anemic pre-bypass surgery (low serum Ferratin, iron, hemoglobin and hematocrit). I later found out that anemia is one of the first signs of gastritis, esophagitis and GERD, which is why I had the bypass. My doctor told me to take two 65 mg tables of Iron (Ferrous Sulfate) for 3 months then repeated my labs. After 3 months, my ferratin was normal, but total iron was high, so I went back to just one 65 mg tablet per day. That is what my surgeon recommended post bypass as well. My surgeon does the first set of lab tests 5 months after surgery. I'm scheduled to get labs done in March, so I'm hoping to be in the "normal" range for all the vitamins and minerals that he checks for to rule out malabsorption. From what I've read, very few RNY patients end up with malabsorption, as long as they take the recommended supplements - which for me is one multivitamin, 2 calcium chews and on 65 mg iron pill. I get the B vitamins from the multivitamin, so I'm not taking any B-12 supplements.

Gastric Sleevr Vs. Bypass
NYCGirl9269 replied to NYCGirl9269's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
So this pretty much sucks...I was informed that the gastric bypass for me is out of question since I'm on ADHD meds, specifically Vyvanse which is an extended release and there's no alternative that works as good as vyvanse so my only option now is the sleeve. I'm worried I won't drop 100% of my excess weight since you only have a 18 month window to drop it all and I have 150 lbs to lose [emoji45] Sent from my SM-N986U using BariatricPal mobile app -
Anthem Blue Cross PPO California - policy change?
ChunkyCali posted a topic in Insurance & Financing
Hello, Looking for others that have Anthem Blue Cross PPO in California. At my initial visit with the surgeons office they instructed me to have 6 months of dietician visits. Anthem had sent me links to their policy document cg-surg-83 that (to my reading!) looked like 6 months wasn't required as of August 2020. The policy states: Documentation of all of the following: Past participation in a weight loss program; and Inadequate weight loss despite a committed attempt at conservative medical therapy (for example, comprehensive lifestyle interventions, including a combination of diet, exercise, and behavioral modifications); and Also: Revised 08/13/2020 Medical Policy & Technology Assessment Committee (MPTAC) review. Revised criteria requiring participation of at least 6 months in a weight reduction program. Revised not medically necessary indications to remove examples of devices which are no longer available. Updated Discussion and References sections. Reformatted Coding section. I have all of my clearances except for another 2 months of dietician visits. What I'd like to do is ask my surgeons office to just submit to insurance now with the hopes that I will get surgery end of Feb/early March. Has anyone got any recent experience I can draw on to help inform my decision and make my case! -

Does hernia repair during gastric bypass surgery slow down healing process?
WishMeSmaller replied to Dimplez90's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I had hiatal hernia repair with my bypass. I would get cramping after eating and sometimes vomit. This happened with decreasing frequency for about the first 2-3 months post-op. My surgeon’s office thought it was related to the hernia repair. I still get nauseous sometimes if I eat too much, too fast, but haven’t had the cramping/vomiting thing in 4-5 months. Congrats on your spectacular weight loss so far! I hope the rest of your recovery goes smoothly. 😊 -
Hi Lola, I had my gastric bypass on the 12th, and I have been drinking protein shakes since the second day after, but every Dr, is different as are we, It is true tho, my taste buds changed completely. i am so glad that I listened to the folks on here and only bought a few things to try at a time. Before surgery, I made my own protein shakes with ice and protein powder in a blender, but right now I am still not up to doing all of that and the only 'ready to drink' protein drink I can get down is the "Oh Yeah" brand. They are out of stock on Walmart.com, but I know GNC carries them. Typically, Id want chocolate, Not anymore....I only want the vanilla. If you can get your hands on a couple of those maybe give them a try. I hope that you feel better soon. Please keep me posted.

I agree with you im tired of going under the knife and just want mt life back. Its looking like i will probably go with the bypass I just wanted to know if there's anything i should know that's not really talked about or published on bypaas I know i will have to take supplements for the rest of my life. (I currently don't take any with vsg and blood work is perfect) And i have to be careful on what pills i take. Dumping syndrome i understand. What about an occasional alcoholic drink? Anything else?

Does hernia repair during gastric bypass surgery slow down healing process?
Dimplez90 posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hi everyone I’m about 4 weeks post-op and I feel Like the healing process has been pretty slow along with a slow weight loss. I did have some complications after surgery. One day after being released from the hospital I had to go back for pneumonia and stayed a week. During my gastric bypass surgery I also had a hernia repair. Almost 4 weeks out and I’m still feeling pretty nauseous and having lots of gas and stomach aches. I also know I’m not getting enough liquids daily it’s still a struggle. Has anyone else gone through this or something similar? my stats: Height: 5’9 Starting Weight: 342.2 - Surgery Weight: 310 - Current Weight: 286.6 -

Gastric Sleevr Vs. Bypass
catwoman7 replied to NYCGirl9269's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
those percentages are averages. And as with all averages, there are people who fall on either side of that range. You'll find people on here who've lost 90% or 100% (with either surgery) and you'll find people who've lost 20% or 30% (with either surgery). It all comes down to how closely you stick to your program. If you stick to it and don't let bad habits creep back in, you'll do fine and will likely lose more than average. as for missing hunger control when revised to bypass - I definitely had hunger control with my bypass. I don't think you can compare a revision to a "virgin" surgery. -
Gastric Sleevr Vs. Bypass
NYCGirl9269 replied to NYCGirl9269's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
And im just saying in my experience and those I personally know, all started gaining back 2, 3 years after the surgery even when they ate healthy...like it started becoming a struggle for them to control hunger and cravings again Moreso for those who had sleeve done than those I know who had bypass, and 10 years later this girl I know who was 450 is at 80 lbs now from bypass and can't put weight back on 10 years later to her ideal weight at 120....shes had no problem keeping weight off and doesn't even try...but the sleevers I know all gained back a lot more than the expected 15% overtime Sent from my SM-N986U using BariatricPal mobile app -
Gastric Sleevr Vs. Bypass
NYCGirl9269 replied to NYCGirl9269's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
Not really set on the bypass, I keep going back and forth between the 2 each day, I see all kinds of weight lost and weight regained with both but what gets to me is how it says with sleeve patients lose 60-70% and with bypass its 70-80% and I just keep looking at that 80% ...but for me most important is hunger control. I've read somewhere on here people who complained about when they had a sleeve and then got a bypass, they miss the hunger control they had with the sleeve that bypass didn't give them...but bypass gives you a smaller pouch than the sleeve so makes you full much faster....ugh decisions decisions...
