  1. Welcome! There is a forum for band to VSG revision about half way down the page and there are several people here!
  2. Have any revisionists had trouble getting motivation to lose more weight? I am going from lapband to sleeve on 2/20/19 and I feel like even though I have plenty to lose, I’m not feeling like I am going to, or that I am not as motivated to. Maybe it’s a defense mechanism? I am hoping it’s like when a woman has a baby and their “maternal instincts” kick in that I will feel more motivated after surgury to make weight loss a goal rather than just getting my lapband out... any one else struggle with this and if so, did that change after surgery? Thanks ahead of time.

    thinking of switching

I was revised on 1/28/2013. It has been the best decision ever! The band just was not for me. I was banned on 4/18/2011 and never lost more than 15 lbs. My insurance changed through work and I ended up with KAISER...I was not to happy about that but I had no other choice. My primary doctor and I discussed the possibility of a revision on my diabetic appt, that was like Tuesday and I received a call from the bariatric deptartment the next day! The bariatric nurse I spoke with said that it would not be a problem. She put in for a referral for my Dr. to approve...and waalaa in 48 hours I received an approval letter! I had my surgical consult a couple weeks later on 1/9/2013 and was in surgery on the 28th. Was amazingly quick. My surgeon Robert E Zan in Harbor City Ca. is amazing as well as all his staff.

    thinking of switching

if you follow this link it has a good comparison of the different WLS: http://www.lapsf.com/weight-loss-surgeries.html I'm revision a week from today!
  5. Hi Karen! I had my revision surgery (lapband to sleeve) at Star Medica with Dr. Rodriguez in april 2012. I was a little apprehensive about going to Juarez due the the violence going on in Mexico. We agreed that we would stay in the hospital and not venture out. The hospital has a small cafeteria so my friend didn't need to leave at all. I felt very safe with our driver (Sergio) and in the hospital. Sergio picked us up at the El Paso airport. We arrived on Thursday and was scheduled to stay until Sunday. We ended up leaving a day early on Saturday. I was feeling really good and all the post op tested were fine. The border crossing on the way home was much longer especially on the weekend. Star Medica Hospital was great. Clean and Modern. The staff was great. Every doctor that I had contact with spoke english. The nurses spoke english to varying degrees. There were a few nurses that did not speak english. However, I didn't have a lot of difficulty understanding them or being understood. I haven't had any complications. I bounced back from the surgery really well. If you have any additional questions, please feel free to message me. Gilly
  6. I was banded in 2013. My starting weight was 226 and my lowest was 149. I have had nothing but problems with my band since the beginning. Back and forth to the doctor, a lot of discomfort and pain and just a rough quality of life the past few years with eating. For 2 years, I was a consistent 155, but could not seem to lose any more weight and the number this last year has crept up to 170! I want to get a revision, but I'm afraid I'm not "obese enough" to have it. Any help on this topic would be so appreciated. I'm terrified to have nothing and regain all my weight so i continue living like this....please help.

I will be so glad when it's OUT!

I'm glad you did too Lily, I wish more people would talk about problems with their bands because I think we are led into thinking that these problems don't happen to everybody that has a band. I also think that maybe these doctors are getting kickbacks from the companies that sell Lap or Realize Bands, I mean, why would they be pushing the band so hard when there is such mixed results? And think about it, when you get the RNY or the sleeve, there is no device or whatever, so basically no outside company is making money off the surgery. Sorry for the mini rant but I get kinda pissed when I think about how much time and money I have put into my band and I am no where near where I want to be (weight wise). I am very fortunate that I now have insurance that will cover a revision to the sleeve, otherwise I would just be stuck with it.

I will be so glad when it's OUT!

I am so happy you are getting rid of your band. You will love the sleeve. I agree that it is annoying that doctors are promoting the band. I can't stand the lapband commericials! They make it sound so great and easy when the fact is most with the band fail. I am thankful that my revision doctor doesn't like bands and told me about the sleeve. He sees all the problems with the band because he fixes so many of the problems they cause. The thing about the band is that is where the money is. Doctors make money from fills, flouro, and later down the road revisions. They even lowered the BMI requirement so that more people can have them and suffer! My band was nothing but a big pain. Now that I have had so much success with my sleeve I will tell anyone that will listen NOT to get the band. I can't believe I had that thing in my body so long. Anyway, good luck with your revision! You will do great. You will appreciate your sleeve so much. Hugs and best wishes for a speedy recovery. I am here if you have any questions!
  9. Hello All, This has been quite a journey for me. I had a lapband done in June of 2009 and due to a flipped port I decided to go ahead and have a revision surgery. I had lost 70 pounds with the lapband but had gained it all back. I suffer from depression and bipolar 1 and I didn't have the coping skills necessary to FOCUS on a health lifestyle. Well, I have been given a new lease on life. I am loving my vertical sleeve. I make better food choices and have not had a single problem in the past five weeks. I also have a therapist and am taking the proper medications. What a great opportunity I have been given to be able to regain sound physical and mental health. Loving life and wishing the best to all of my fellow sleevers.

Having RNY REVISION July 13 Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App
  11. Hi all, I had VSG back in 2014, and have been good. I developed bad GERD and am converting to bypass on October 1st. Does anyone have experience with this type of surgery? I would like to lose my remaining weight too, but don’t know how much a conversation will actually help you lose. Not having regurgitation will be with all of it though!!
  12. Did you also gain some of the weight back? Don’t you have to be a certain size to qualify for revision? Especially with insurance? I mean will a dr do it even for gerd if you are near a healthy BMI?
  13. I received the call yesterday that my revision from band to DS is approved. I'm completely shocked as I thought it would be a battle for approval since my band took two appeals to get approval. I also keep waiting for them to call me back and say oops, that was another patients approval. It happened so fast. I got an email Tuesday saying that they were going to submit then by Friday got the approval. Can it be real? 🤞🏼🤞🏼🤞🏼 My surgeon wanted to schedule me for 7/18/17 but I'll be in the middle of moving so I opted for 8/8/17.

    Very depressed and lost

My band ended up giving me Grade 3 Esophagitis, I had no idea either, it wasn't until I had the upper endoscopy to make sure there was no erosion with the band before my revision that I found out I had a moderate to severe esophagial damage... Now, heartburn and other burning issues are totally gone!

    Sleeve or Bypass?

Just want to clear up a few things. 1. Having bypass does not mean you won't be able to eat regular food. I have been eating in restaurants since 4 weeks post op. I can eat whatever I want, that does not mean I should nor do I. 2. Both surgeries will ultimately achieve a high weight loss as long as you follow the plan 3. Both surgeries are invasive - with the sleeve they actually remove 85 percent of your stomach which means it cannot be reversed. With bypass they reroute your intestines so that you have malabsorption which is intended to help with weight loss 4. Both require you to take supplements and have labs checked on a regular basis do life. Adjustments to Vitamins are determined by how you are doing on those labs Most people choose bypass at the recommendation of their doctors because it cures both Reflux/Gerd and diabetes. Many times the sleeve and lap and actually make reflux/Gerd worse and in many cases those surgeries can bring it on. If reflux/Gerd gets bad enough it requires a revision to bypass anyway. Leverage your surgeon to help you decide what is best for your health history. They really are experts and can help guide you. It is definitely more than a personal decision in my opinion and requires a deep dive by experts in your health history. If you search this site for revisions to bypass you will see a lot of posts from people that have had to get s second and third surgery because they ended up with erosion and Gerd that had to be dealt with. My recommendation would be to research until you are comfortable with your choice. Good luck!

    Lupus / Lupus Nephritis Question

I'm also having problems with my band and I also have an autoimmune disease. Every time I get a fill enough to even border on restriction, my body goes nuts and epic hurling ensues if I try to eat food, good or bad. So for me it's all restriction or no restriction. I've had my band for a year now and not lost a single pound. Before I had by band put in, I asked lots of questions about my fibromyalgia and if it would be a problem and I was assured that it wouldn't. They lied. I am considering a revision to the sleeve and I am again concerned about the autoimmune disease aspect and will I end up even sicker? The sleeve can't be reversed, which makes me a bit apprehensive. If I don't lose the weight, there's a possibility I may go blind because the pressure in my brain is threatening to tear apart my eyeballs from the inside so something has to be done. 20. My surgery group does a lot of WLS's each month and our pre op supervised visits were in a group setting of about 10 - 12 patients (we would individually see the Dr each time, but nutrition was in group). It seemed as though we were all there because it was required for our medical insurance authorization. Some of us for 6 monthly visits while others only required 3. Some of these patients were revisions and they were still required to do it. You may get away with not having to go if you pay out of pocket, but I don't see how they would be able to get around insurance requirements, my Dr office was pretty clear on this. I know it's a pain to wait this long, but it really does help you prepare for this life change and if you can put up with all of the pre op requirements you are obviously dedicated to it. best of luck.

    Recovery/Hunger

The Vertical Sleeve Gastrectomy (VSG) cuts out the main area that produces grhelin but the body still produces grhelin in other areas and these areas can bring hunger levels to more or less what they were pre-surgery. VSG gives you the highest chance of resolving hunger, but it doesn't resolve it for everyone - it's just that your odds are better. Plication hasn't resolved my hunger issues (I just eat a little less in a sitting but not a lot - my restriction hasn't really been sufficient to produce much weight loss). You'll find some people suggesting taking an antacid to help with hunger - although according to the medical profession this shouldn't affect hunger. In any case I did take an antacid for a couple of weeks, but it didn't help me. If you qualify for bypass then you also qualify for the Duodenal Switch (DS). VSG is part one of a 2 stage DS op (it's regularly done in one stage though). If the VSG doesn't provide sufficient weight loss or resolve your hunger, revising to a DS should still be an option. DSers have a high Protein and generally high fat diet (some have to experiment to find a level that suits them). Most DSers are satiated with a high protein and high fat diet - they malabsorb 80% fat, 50% protein and some complex carbs (they absorb 100% of simple carbs). Please don't go with the RNY gastric bypass, as it's really difficult to revise from this surgery. Also with RNY you only malabsorb calories for 2 years but you malabsorb nutrients forever! Remember Carnie Wilson when she was looking fab and posed for Playboy and now she's back over 200lbs (better than the >300lbs she started at, but she's only 5"3). BTW that wasn't a dis to Carnie, with RNY you just get the tables turned on you around 2 years out and that's why a lot RNYers seek revisions. BTW I believe that no stomach is removed with RNY, it's simply stapled off and is therefore likely to have a similar effect on hunger to plication IMO (ie when the stomach is full it's stretched and that creates the full sensation but then when empty you'll get hungry). HTH
  22. Has anyone had their sleeze revised by the EGD overstitch prodcedure? If so, how have you done?
  23. Last year (2012) I was having so much problem with my Lap Band (surgery Jan. 2009). Had xrays that showed nothing was wrong with it. But the heart burn, acid reflex, burping....etc.... I had had enough! Went to primary care doctor, he agreed to send me to the Gastric Surgeon. She approved my request to have a revision to RNY. BUT, she couldn't do it as she was the only Gastric Surgeon they had (USAF), so she approved the order to send me downtown. Tricare approved the order for me to see Gastric Surgeon, he approved the surgery, had all the tests, blood, chest xray, EKG, Phsic, dietician, trainer, etc....BUT, then it happened. Tricare said no! What the HELL???? On July 5th the fight started. Had 2 denials and sent all the paper work of the doctors I had seen over the 4 years of lap band and problems I have had. Stll denial....sent ONE more appeal to Tricare and it took almost a year. This all started on July 5, 2012 and I just recieved my apporval last week (May 2, 2013). Don't ever give up HOPE! I thought the insurance lady was going to fall over when I called to tell her it was APPROVED! Now the only thing I have left to do is Cadiologist as I am over 60. So hopefully this will go fast....I am so ready!!! Thanks for listening......

    What to ask the doctor?

Getting insurance coverage can be difficult. Generally the hospital and surgeon have staff that can assist you. Cost is generally a major concern. There are several different forms of Weight Loss Surgery (WLS). These different forms have different outcomes. In some you lose weight faster and deeper than others. Some have a higher probability of requiring revisions. (I decided that when I underwent this surgery I did not want to undergo it again.) Some forms of surgery are better suited for any co-morbitities you may have. For example I had GERD. If I got the sleeve it would only compound this problem and RNY was better suited for this condition. You might want to get briefed on the various steps you will need to go through - psych evaluation, classes, pre-op tests etc. You may want to start to attend Bariatric Surgery Support Group Meetings. They are free and generally occur monthly. Depending on the requirements of your insurance, you may need to go through a medically monitored diet and exercise program to qualify.
  25. They don't recommend the sleeve to people who have reflux or gerd because when they do the sleeve, the stomach is not aware that 80% of it has been removed and it keeps making acid for a whole stomach. I have to take an acid blocker, almost 5 years post op. I tried to get off of it, but I had way too many acid problems. If your gerd can't be controlled with an acid blocker, you should not get the sleeve. I do know several people who have had to revise to RNY (gastric bypass) because of acid problems.
