So this weekend will be my first long (4 days long only) trip/ vacation since my surgery. I'm heading to NYC with my friend for a little shopping and site seeing. I'm kind of nervous cause of the whole food thing. I know I need to keep my Proteins up and will have to stay fully hydrated the whole time. I hope I'm not gonna gain any weight though. Gonna try and buy clothes in a smaller size then the size that fits me so it will fit for a while :-) do still wish I could buy some Garett Popcorn for myself but I'll just buy it as a gift for someone LOL.

Breakfast on the go
ISleevedIt replied to SimplyFAB's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I probably will stay on protein shakes for breakfast since I'm not a big breakfast person. Maybe you can prepare breakfast the night before and just heat it up in the morning. -
6 days post op! Help!
Kamileighx3 replied to jocelyndavisss's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Hi Jocelyn, I had my surgery, RNY, on 8/28, I'm just a few days ahead of you. Im struggling with your same issues. Since everything medicine and supplement wise has to be crushed, I'm eating one applesauce cup a day divided in thirds. 1/3 in the morning for my Calcium Supplement, 1/3 around 3:00pm for my next 2 pill dose of Calcium and then the last 1/3 I mix with my Bariatric Chewable Supplement. Believe me, this is more than enough to fill me up each day but know I need more and want more. I've been adding high protein yogurt to the mix, cottage cheese and the best thing ever was yesterday, an Egg Beaters Scrambled Egg with low fat cheese...HEAVEN!!! I just bought an amazing cookbook called , "Earing Well After Weight Loss Surgery" by Levine and Bontempo-Saray. The authors recipes sound delicious and they break down the recipes telling when in your recovery, you can have the recipe. This is where I got the idea for the scrambled egg. Keep the Faith my fellow weight loss surgery sister, we can do this!!,! -

Recipes for life after weight loss, revised and updated
jmg1263 posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I am 5 days post sugary, gastric bypass. It is NOT easy. I finally today am feeling a little bit better. I keep telling myself that this period is going to be HELL but follow the program and it will be ok. I had to meditate through the pain at times. Tomorrow I am going to begin with a 2000 step walk. I was feeling low today also but then I got a recipe book in the mail that really lifted my spirits. The food in it looks amazing. Really good looking stuff but prepared in a high Protein low calorie way. I have NOT read the entire book yet but I know the future will look brighter. I have not yet had a chance to read it but I did thumb through it. A GREAT looking pizza recipe in there and I can't wait to try it. Book is: recipes for after weight loss surgery, revised and updated by Margaret Furtado. There are so many amazing looking recipes in there. Pizza, Humus, Sausage and Lentil Soup, Latkes, crab cakes, stroganoff. Looks amazing and the book is loaded with pictures and lots of wonderful looking stuff. I am actually excited and it lifted my spirits. One example recipe is below. AGAIN, I have not read the entire book so I am not sure at what stage I can start this but it is promising. I was miserable but 5 days after surgery I am finally feeling better. Sharing one of the recipes in the book. Pita Pizza: 284 calories. 25.6 grams protein. Makes 4. 4 small 4 inch whole wheat pita breads. 1 can 6 0z, low sodium tomato paste 1 teaspoon dry oregano 1 teaspoon dry basil 1 teaspoon dried thyme 4 tablespoons grated parm cheese 1 cup cooked boneless skinless chicken breast cut into small cubes. Or, chicken italian sausage, or ground meat. 1/2 cup fresh slices mushrooms 1 can, 2.5 oz sliced black olives 3/4 cup (85g) shredded part skim mozzarella cheese Oven 375. Lightly spray a sheet pan with cooking spray. Put on all toppings and bake aprox 15 minutes. Picture of the pizzas look AMAZING. NOW, I have to say I have not read the entire book yet so I am not sure when this recipe can be used but it is good to know that down the road a healthy pizza is possible. Looking through this book raised my spirits. John -
MzzDani do you like fish? If so try having salmon at least 2x a week so you can get the omega 3 fats and all the other great nutrients that it has. It could be a 'not enough' healthy fats issue. As Lynda486 says Tumeric couldn't hurt. Vital source collagen/protein powder might be helpful too. I hope the pain subsides and keep us posted.

Feel like I'm missing something !
laceemouse replied to shirl123's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Mine is less than that. I told my surgeon my PCP was not on board with me needing this and he said she doesn't have to be. HE did the letter of medical necessity. sleep study was optional. I did the psych eval a couple of weeks ago. Once that was sent to the surgeon his office coordinator sent everything to BCBS. After I get approval from them I get blood work. I guess I will have one more pre-op visit with the doctor? I only have to do a 3 day liquid diet before surgery. It's funny how different things are for different surgeons and insurance companies. I am not worried about my insurance requiring less. I am a super information gatherer. I have been researching, reading books, watching YouTube videos and asking questions about WLS for probably 2 years. My hospital has a support group, I went last week and asked the nurse some more specific questions. I'm ready, just need my date! Good luck to you! -
I dont like Protein shakes but I do like Optifast, and often use it as a base. I get weird comments when i buy it along the lines of, oh, you dont need this stuff but the thing us, becuse its a Meal Replacement, its very nutritious! And it doesnt taste like eating candles which is how Protein Shakes taste to me. I like vanilla opti with frozen berries or with Peanut Butter and banana (often use the PB2 powder to save calories and about half a frozen banana) strawberry is good with frozen berries too And i love the coffee flavour with a few walnuts I too always add ground flaxseed and a few spoonfukks of psyllium. smoothies are great for bandsters because using something like Optifast you get a fruit serve, a huge whack of fibre and a large total of ypur days Vitamins and minerals in a meal that goes dcown without drama and is less than 300 calories. As a bancdster smoothies

Hey guys don't know if you have Duane reades or cvs or vitamin shoppes where you live but I got these great protein "shots" they don't taste great but they are only 3-4 ounces a piece. The thinner ones are about the size of a five oz energy and have 28 gm protein and the larger ones from vitamin shoppe are whey protein shots and 42 gm protein each. I HATE the isopure. If you're gonna have to have something gross at least make it a smaller amount!

Pinkfreak posted a topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
Do you think eating about every 2 hours....high protein stuff is better than 3 meals a day ???? I feel like I am doing better on the high protein, small frequent meals.....but my doc says 3 meals a day..... He told me last visit to cut out breakfast...due to being hungry and seeking food at night... I am not happy with my weight loss right now.... it is probably mostly my fault...but I need some advice..... -
Skim Pluz Milk?
I'mDoingIt! replied to HalloweenBaby24's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
i use it in my cream of wheat which adds even more protein. -
I am 3 days post-op and today is my first day of full liquids. As I was reading the pamphlet my surgeon gave me, it said I should have a bowel movement by post-op day 3 but I have yet to have one. Should I take milk of mag to induce it it wait it out? Also, it's taking me 90+ minutes to finish a shake because it fills me so quickly, since each shake is 25g of protein would I be okay with 2 1/2 shakes a day? Before surgery I just barely took in 64oz, I'm finding it hard to get it FL in during the day and I'm wondering if I'd be okay with a little less. Since I'm on full liquids I thought I'd try sugar free sherbet since it's my favorite, hoping that will help get my fluid intake up a bit. Any advice and suggestions welcome!

Eating too little?
BandedApril replied to BandedApril's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Thanks! I know I need to work on eating more Protein, I just find that eating meat requires so much chewing that it bores me! ha I have some Protein Powder, so maybe I'll start adding that to foods. Staying full 5 -6 hours sounds great. Maybe if I Bump up my portions I'll stay full longer. I think right now I eat 1/4 to 1/2 cup, so it makes sense that it burns off quicker. Wel, I'm off to eat my eggs! -
You don't have to eat meat to get your protein. I eat very little of it. Try alternatives....eggs, almonds, cheese, yogurt, refried Beans, protein powder....there are many things to choose from.

Protein drinks are very tricky. It's really a trial and error process. A lot of people love the RTD's but I find that they have a chemical taste. So I stick with powders. I personally like About Time because they use very few ingredients and high quality whey protein. I've decided to just stick with the chocolate, vanilla and unflavored ones and then dress them up with syrups. I've got six different Tarani sugar free syrups and they help with the taste quite a bit. I just got brown sugar and cinnamon so I'm really anxious to try that one! Good luck! ETA - Have you checked out the protein thread? There's a post that has a bunch of links to sites that let you order samples of different brands. That might be a good way to go. You can also buy individual RTD's at GNC or the Vitamin Shoppe.

First Protein Drink...
Amanda 3.0 replied to carr1015's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Yes, you really have to try quite a few to find what works for you! A lot of people like the Premier Protein ready to drink product (30g protein per serving). I have been able to drink these all along (I am six month post-op). I would try to find them in small quantities at the grocery store or perhaps a supplement store to try before buying too many, but if they work for you you can get them in chocolate and vanilla and costco. I used to hate the vanilla, but saw that they have a new formula and so I bought some yesterday. Much better, less chalky. There is a powdered product by Cytosport that is sold in chocolate and vanilla at Costco. It comes in a bag and has 27 grams of protein per scoop, and it blends very well with coffee. I used to drink the unjury but got tired of it. It was great for a while, but I would just caution against overbuying any one product. This stuff is not cheap, and our tastes change with time! Good luck finding what will work for you. It is out there! -
Check with your nutritionist or dietician about these. Most of the "protein shots" have collagen as the primary protein, which our bodies don't process effectively as protein. They do have whey protein in them, but they are usually not the primary source of protein. I've been told very specifically that they are not a replacement option for me, with the exception of one called "Yes, Whey" that is 100% whey protein isolate.

Time is ticking away!
RJC5197 replied to pammieanne's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Congrats and best to you. My visit was Monday for May 17 surgery. I agree there is a lot to take in, and the part about open procedure option made me nervous. I am having a revision an had open last time and did not want to go that route again, but with my past WLS problems, what ever it takes. I felt much better talking to surgeon and PA that they have done many of these revisions, and only with excessive bleeding (3% of time) do they have to go open. -
Hungry after Vitamins
Daisee68 replied to Roberto Molina's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Agree with others. Take with food. Absorption is better with food anyway (even if just your Protein drink). The hunger feeling could actually be acid reflux. -
Unfortunately, no. Apparently I am very sensitive and anything over .5 filled At once and I swell up like crazy. But I couldn't even get down thick liquids like protein drinks and such. As soon ad they unfilled me and the swelling went down I was pretty loose again . But the next fill got me where I am now and I'm definately in the green zone! I just have top take it slow with fills and I'm okay with that. But think liquids and purees should never be a problem or hurt going down.

Experienced Bandsters, what are your tricks of the trade?
Sunta replied to ChicagoCoco's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
I'm only 4.5 months out, but so far I've been losing about 2 pounds per week. Here's my list of do's and dont's: 1. Protein is the central focus of my meals. This greatly reduces hunger (as opposed to when I was eating 1/2 bagel for Breakfast, Pasta, etc. I was sooooo hungry!) 2. Strict adherence to avoiding drinking before/during/after meals 3. Limit food to 1 or 1.5 cup per meal. 4. Eat delicious, healthy food I desire and love so I don't feel deprived 5. NO ice cream, soft Desserts (mousse, soft pie, mushy cake) because they slide down waaay too easy. I did cheat on this one time and ended up eating an enormous square of some creamy dessert at an Italian restaurant. Need to avoid entirely as I'm unable to limit them on my own or stop eating after a small amount. 6. NO sugary drinks like fruit juice, mixed girly drinks, creamy drinks, lattes, etc. 7. Greatly limit chips, popcorn, nacho chips, ect. There is zero restriction on these foods for me. I do sometimes buy the 1/2 calories chips made with olestra. 8. Limit processed carbs (usually eat no more than 2 servings per day; a serving being 1 slice of bread or 1/2 cup rice). No limit on whole grains although I eat so much protein I usually end up eating no more than 2 servings of any kind of carb per day. 9. Greatly limit sweets of any kind. I do have dessert once in a while but nowhere near like pre-band levels! 10. I'm trying to be more active and had been going to the gym regularly. Have to get back on track with this one! This is my biggest challenge, much bigger than eating... -
Experienced Bandsters, what are your tricks of the trade?
Vera replied to ChicagoCoco's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
I have a small soup(broth) or a cup of tea before most meals, do Protein next, which is tuna, chicken, egg salad or thin sliced meats and cheeses. In the winter it's vegis next but now it's been alot of fruit. Most of the time it's about 5 bites of both and i'm full. The warm liquids before the meal helps the pouch feel ready for food, otherwise I feel every bite. -
Experienced Bandsters, what are your tricks of the trade?
Jachut replied to ChicagoCoco's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
The biggest thing that works for me is mental attitude. I think it helps that attitudes are a bit different in Australia - we're not given all those rules about eating 1/2 to 1 cup, so many grams of Protein, etc, there's not the fashion for protein first, any of that. Well there wasnt with my surgeon anyway. I got banded, i saw a dietician to make sure I knew what a healthy diet was and pretty much left to it. So for me - I'm never ever going on another diet. That simple revelation has meant that I no longer feel I have to eat everything! No food is out, I can eat anything I want to within moderation, as long as most of the time what I eat is healthy. If I"m down the shops and I want the free cinnamon donut with my coffee (NOT humungously fattening Krispy Kremes type donuts!) I just have it and I dont think about it again. I dont count calories, I dont count anything. Overall I eat way less and that's really ALL it comes down to in the end. I also exercise - I run regularly, becuase I LOVE it. Again, I picked something I wanted to do, and am not forcing myself to do this that or the other because there's some magic formula for weightloss. So it takes no willpower to keep going becuase its basically something I do for fun. I do use all the little tactics though - I dont stock the house full of fattening things becuase if they're there I will eat them.
