  1. Hi Lesley, You sound like you are headed in the right direction. Go buy some new drawers woman!!! Which cruise did you take? I will be going on a 9 day cruise 4 months out from surgery. I have been sleeved for 3 days and doing ok - some gas pain and rumbling, a little tired. Just today I have managed 11/2 protein drinks and some vitamin water and broth - no picnic but managing.
  2. Looks like I had a terrible rx to the anesthetic the first 40 hours but now I keep down some broth, Protein tea, and Tylenol w codeine. It's hard sharing room with people who eat real food. Makes me nauseous again. Heading home in a few hours! Sent from my iPhone using VST
  3. Well Hello - I am so there with you. I am new to this "posting" thing so I just found your post. I had my surgery in Aug 2003 . . .lost about 60 pounds my first year & now have "re-committed" to the process. I got lazy & learned to eat / drink and that wasn't keeping me full. "Plus" side is that I have kept the weight off but the sad side is I want to be heathly & it seems the only way is to lose weight. Last year, 2009, I started again, in one year I lost 35 ponds so over all i am down a good 90 pounds from my orginal weight. I want to lose to fit into a size 16/18 comfortably - what ever weight that was. Thanks for letting me vent now to suggestions that you might want to consider. The program that my doctor promotes is the a high Protein one. He wants us to have 60/80 grams a day & then other intake. I have never been able to handle lettuce (salads) so I am not of the loss there. Last year when I started again, I found myself totally bummed b/c I tried to change EVERYTHING at once. I needed to do small steps to get my body back into the habit of smaller & better. Maybe try baby steps like for me - I cut out all sweet tea (southern style with 100% sugar), then I got some peddles - Wal-Mart ($24.97) to use while I sit & watch TV or movies or read a magazine. I don't break a sweat but I do that about three times a week and it has helped. I have followed the plan to a "T" ? No but I am working on getting back to the plan, back to the to the basics of surgery. I finally came to the realization that I spent (insurance paid) a lot of money for surgery & I haven't done squat with it. Time I did. Try the baby steps, think about the little things that you can change then after a while they will not seem so challenging. Good Luck - I am in TN but holler at me anytime - daytime e-mail suzanne.ginter@HCAhealthcare.com

    At a stand still

Hey, In watching the others who have succeeded the bottom line to success seems to be: 1. Loading up on Protein 90-100G/day probably more than you have told by the doctor (check out ISCpure Zero Carb drinks) 2. Exercise 60 minutes 5-6 days a week (Weights and Cardio) 3. 3 small meals and 3 protein shakes/day This drives metabolism up and weight-loss down. I hope this helps.

How long must I take protein drinks?

Would you mind sharing a sample of your mushy/soft diet? I don't mind the taste of protein drinks, but I'd like to get as much of my protein from "real" foods as often as possible. I start soft foods in two weeks so I'm trying to plan now and gather some soft food recipes that are high-protein. Thanks!

How long must I take protein drinks?

You'll need to be aware of how much protein you're getting daily...but you certainly can be getting the bulk of your protein through solid foods within 4-6 months of your surgery. (At least, I do).

    Scared to eat

Hello, I had to stay on liquid for 5 days, then puree foods, etc.... I had a hard time with the food as well... Sugar Free Popcycles were and are my best friend still! I talked to my doc at my one month check up and told him I couldnt do food much yet at all and he was not concerned a bit..... told me to be sure to only eat when I am hungry, focus on my protein and solid food will be tolerated when I am ready for it. I am now at 2 month mark and there are still foods that I will not even try because I do not want to upset my stomach. I love my crystal light, popcycles and protein shakes! Hang in there, everyone is different.....and only you know what your body can and cannot tolerate!

    Just a personal vent here.

BLAH BLAH BLAH BLAH (yes, I'm screaming.) Same F-ing boat (yes, I'm cussing, too.) Same weight gain. Same everything. This is Day 2 of being good for me, and it sucks. No Snacks, no soda, no diet soda, no nothing. Lettuce with Protein for lunch. Fruit F-ing cup instead of goodies. Blah, blah, blah. My big treat for the day was a chewable Vitamin that left a nasty taste in my mouth. I even felt guilty for that. I got so far off track that eveyone at work is afraid of me now. They are all supportive (except the "Big E") and they know I mean business. I'm friggen flying off the walls from ODing on ice tea with fake poison chemicals. I would lick a dirty foot for a Coke right now. You're not alone.

    Body aches?

sounds like you may be dehydrated, not getting in enough Protein, have a Vitamin deficiency, or some combination of those. are you following the plan carefully? have you had blood work recently to check your vitamin levels?

    Headaches Anyone?

Are you still on narcotic pain meds? They tend to give me a headache. Do makes sure you are consuming plenty of liquids and at day 3 I get to start adding protein shakes back in. Lack of protein might be the reason as well. Talk to your doctor.

    Finally my first fill

Youre doing fine with your protein amounts, my doc said 80 may be pushing it. But, I was doing about 130 grams of protein a day. And no wonder I wasnt losing and gaining instead. I didnt gain much, but, it was enough to discourage me. But also take into consideration, the foods you eat have protein, even if youre drinking, you have to add up all the other protein. Especially in fish, which has high amounts. Cut down on one of the whey bullets, thats my suggestion, cause I was taking the EAS Protein shake that has 42 grams of protein in it. I was doing 2 a day. Plus misc protein. That added up quick. Its not hard to keep the protein up. Youre still doing great. SO keep up the good work. Also too much protein can cause problems with the kidneys. Anyway, I hope this helped.

    Day 14. Halfway to Okay.

Ahh don't sell yourself short.. I say it sounds like your day 14 was closer to a B!! You seem to have a very good understanding of when and why you would eat - that has to be worth some points It sounds like you might need some options... have you tried the Syntrex protein nectars? PowerAde zero with protein powder? - anything to shake up the routine of just water... Keep up the good work and stay positive!!

    Nsv: Sleeve More Tolerant!

Hi Rachel: My plan said I could eat solid food at 5 weeks out--had a week of clears, 2 weeks of full liquids, and 2 weeks of mushies/softs. I stayed on mushies/softs for a while because I had big problems with acid, and texture was a big deal for me. You'll be able to tell you're full through a couple of signals, and those differ with different people. Personally, I know when I feel like I need to burp and almost can't, I'm full. Also, my nose runs. Strange, isn't it, but I know other people on this forum have the same symptoms. You will definitely feel the sleeve's restriction when you're able to eat more "regular" food. At this point, my plan says I can eat whatever I can tolerate, keeping in mind my continuing weight-loss goals. I don't typically eat sweets (despite the last two days' lunch desserts!). I aim for Protein foods (Beans, cheese, milk, shrimp/scallops, nuts) and bites of veggies/salad. Really, the only foods I avoid are those that my sleeve doesn't seem to like: beef and chicken, although I "can" eat those in certain forms, raw onions, pasta/bread/flour products, excess sugar, fried stuff--just can't seem to handle the grease. Eating got a lot easier lately; I really feel like our sleeves hit a point where they kind of chill out--I still most definitely have restriction and can only eat around 1/4 to 1/2 c. at a time by volume (and that volume depends on the type of food)--a little more liquid volume if I take it slow. But I definitely get full and get that sensation of food that isn't quite all the way down if I take one bite too many (and I HATE that feeling!). I tend to try to undereat my sleeve, trying to stop when I'm not hungry as opposed to when I'm full--there's a big difference there. You'll do fine. Listen to your body and pay attention to measuring for a while. I still use my 1/2 c. containers every day, because I can't "eyeball" volumes very well, so it's easy for me to overdo by a bite or two, and then I'm in pain and feel icky. Best wishes!!

    Question, not enough calories?

At a month post op you're only supposed to be walking, and as long as your Protein is up you're fine and you'll lose, lose, lose which is kinda the purpose. Protein up, calories down is the way this works, let us know how you progress, and at 4 weeks no move to solids yet? That will give you more caloric intake as well, unless you're restricted from solids I would make that move.

    Serious question for embarrassing problem

yep! I burp ALL the time. Even with protein drinks... I burp... if I drink water, I burp. Its embarassing but I just explain that I recently underwent surgery and that I am still working out the gas they used to pump up my abdomen. If they dont like it shove em! I say excuse me after each time and try to keep it as quiet as I can. If they cant handle that then oh well!!! lol... good luck getting it better though

    10-3-2007

I didn't get to ride my bike today....yet. I might try to get it in after hubby goes to bed. I still don't like exercising in front of him. It was a pretty good day. I'm pretty used to not eating much now. In some ways I can see how being on this pre-op diet can be beneficial. Not just because of the weight loss but that when I am banded I'm already used to not eating hardly anything. Here's what I had today: (typical of everyday) whey protein shake 2scoops in 8oz slim milk 2 slimfast shakes (I'm allowed 3 a day but lately have only been drinking 2) 1 1/2 cups broccoli 1 cup butternut squash soup (90 cals) 1 1/2 cups stir fry veggies 1 diet Dr. Pepper That's around 1200 cals. And I'm really not hungry. The first few days of this pre-op diet I ate like three times as many veggies but not anymore. I'm actually not supposed to have soup but I've been eating progresso's hearty tomato and tried this organic squash soup. The squash soup is pretty nasty. I like squash. I've eaten a lot of it the past two weeks but the soup just wasn't right. It smelled like pumpkin pie and tasted like onion, garlic squash. It messed with my senses. I am so ready for my surgery date. Not much longer. I am on the downhill side now at least. Well, Goodnight. Hope everyone is doing good on their journeys!
  19. her link is in her name... and i put a link on my post ... hope all can enjoy whatever option they choose!!
  20. I also have 2 snacks a day. It's often an ounce of nuts or soynuts, greek yogurt, beef jerky, a spoon of peanut butter or low fat cheese. I try to stick to healthy snacks. I can't get in enough protein otherwise.

    Do anyone snack sometimes

My NUT says 6 200 calorie meal/snack with at least 10 grams protein each I do Protein shake with coffee 2, babybell cheese, lean cusine, greek yogurt, small portion of dinner and then special K protein cereal at night. I will also change up and do some of the products from my doctors office at times or indulge at night instead of my cereal

    Do anyone snack sometimes

My whole day is snacking... Seriously, eliminate the typical food boundaries ( eg 3 meals a day) and eat a small amount of protein / veggies every 2-3 hours, when hungry. Try and not eat carb type stuff that is going to play games with your insulin levels. Good carbs that burn slower are good. Think quinoa, steel oats, etc. I eat about 7-8 times a day. There is no snack, just another meal to fuel up...

    Bread

It's not a good thing if you are filling up on the wrong foods. You want to get your protein in first, veggies,,fruit then healthy carbs. I know..you would think it would be a good thing to get filled up fast..they make pills that supposedly help do this.lol
  24. Almostthere34

    Bread

Tortilla, wraps, and wonton wrappers. I am 11 weeks out and I have had bread and it doesn't make me sick. I just make other choices since I get full really quick. I can't eat all of my protein if I have it. I would only eat a little and see how you feel.
