For me, I use Shaklee's Vanilla Soy Protein powder (15 protein gram sper service and mix with a high-protein yogurt (low fat/low carb: Stoneyfield or Dannon = 15 protein grams) to make a delicious shake - add ice and you are good to go. -
Band too tight? -OR- Eating too fast?
kjhack replied to nothingcomesez's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
I am kind of in this stage too. I have restriction for the first time since I got my band in october 2008. It is very difficult to know how much to eat. I am very tight in the morning. So I usually can only get down 1/2 a yogurt. Then the afternoon is better. 1/2 cup of food at lunch. I just got my fill on monday, so if it gets any tighter I may have to have some removed. Hope we all get this thing figured out. The hardest thing for me is to slow down, at dinner. By the time dinner comes I am starving. -
Hi: I don't count calories or carbs or Protein. I've been banded for 2 1/2 years and have never counted them. That would be too much like "dieting". My doctor tells us to eat healthy, take a multi-Vitamin, and exercise. Works for me. I usually have one of the following for breakfast. Yogurt w/a tablespoon of granola, warmed 1/4 cup of fat free milk with 2 tablespoons of granola, cup of cheerios, cereal bar, a couple of pieces of fat free cheese, cream of wheat, oatmeal, or a peach crisp that I make with instant oatmeal and no sugar added peaches. I have one pancake or 1 1/2 pieces of french toast sometimes on the weekend for a treat. I lean toward the warm choices during the winter. Best wishes to you finding foods that work for you. Keep on trying. Sue

One great idea I got from another post many weeks ago was 1/2c canned pumpkin (not pie filling but pure pumpkin) 1c almond milk, 1 scoop vanilla Protein powder, a dash of pumpkin pie spice , 1 tsp sugar free caramel davinci syrup. I blend all together the night before and it "sets" in the fridge and can eat with a spoon. Delish!! Nutritional value - 28 grams protein, 3 grams fat, 13 grams carbs - 210 calories. Keeps me satisfied for easily 5 hours. Another thing I'll try is 1/2c yogurt or fat free cottage with 1 scoop unflavored soy protein mixed in. Also very satisfying. 20gms protein in soy powder and additional protein in cottage cheese but not so much in yogurt. I have a hard time finding the greek hi protein yogurt that everyone seems to love. You could even mix in a 1/8th or 1/4 cup of Kashi Go Lean Cereal for a bit more protein but additional carbs. These are usually quick and convenient for leaving the house by 6:30 am, and are options for something other than just having a shake everyday. I like to mix things up. Good luck!!

Seems carb heavy. Fruit or raisins for a snack would just make me want more carbs. Crackers and cheese for lunch, well there are just better options. Stick to the basics. Proteins like chicken, fish, lean meat. Eat it on some salad if you like. Carrot stuffing, potatoes, etc.....carb, carb, carb. It is just my opinion but I’d back down the carbs while you are still so soon out from surgery. You don’t need potatoes, or stuffing. You need protein, and non starchy veggies, maybe a few berries if room. Why not some Greek yogurt for a snack?

Isopure Unflavored Protein
FluffyChix replied to biancan2ckyw's topic in Protein, Vitamins, and Supplements
I love using the Isopure unflavored in broths. (Make sure the broth isn't more than about 130-140 degrees or it will clump. I also use reduced sodium Better Than Bouillon + the protein for a quick meal some days. Also, I have added it to a little V-8 then warm it until it's a tomato soup thing...but I'm not sure if V-8 is legal from a sugar perspective? I also have added it to pot roast and other pan drippings to make a protein broth for me. I hear you can add it to low carb milk, cottage cheese, and Greek yogurt to up the protein content. -
You may have oatmeal. One of my favorites is the fat free Greek yogurts. The plain variety has 20g of protein.

I'm 3 weeks post op, and so far, my breakfasts have mostly cosisted of Carb Master yogurt (12 g Protein, 4 g carbs) and light string cheese (8 g protein, ? carbs). I'll probably stay on this for a few more weeks, or at least until I get my first fill. There is one guy at my local support group meeting who has been banded over a year that eats one hard boiled egg and four cucumber slices every day for breakfast. Not sure why, but that's his chosen breakfast. When you met with your dietician, did s/he give you a list of the acceptable foods? Perhaps you can look at it again, seeing something that you may have forgotten about. Sorry I'm not more help, since I'm a week behind you, I haven't yet graduated to a full breakfast. Good luck!

Where do you find sugar free yogurt, and what brand is it? I can't find sugar free.

I am right with you! I am full of regrets myself. My doctor is cold and makes me feel like I'm stupid so I don't ask questions. I ended up with problems with my left lung that caused it to close up and fluid build up around it. The surgeon who put in my chest tube said it was from getting bumped around in the surgery. My stomach burns sometimes horribly or I throw up foam. I am staying nauseous lately so I fight to get in 40 g of protein. I had my surgery 12/29/14. I have no energy and have been trying to find any options for a reversal or as much of one as I can get. I can't even finish a 5oz Greek yogurt and only nuts for solids without throwing up. So, yes I regret this decision even more than both ex-husbands!!! I've lost 47 lbs but the vomiting and chest tube were NOT worth it. I'm miserable. Will I ever be able to eat food again??

I had gastric sleeve surgery exactly 3 weeks ago today. My nutritionist forbade me to drink smoothies because of the sugar content. My calves were extremely sore after surgery and it wasn’t due to blood clots but a deficiency of potassium. So, my husband made me a strawberry banana smoothie with nonfat Greek yogurt and added my protein powder. The smoothie was great! It didn’t upset my stomach and my calves started feeling better. I also don’t like -premade protein shakes so now I make me a smoothie everyday and add my protein powder. I’m still losing weight. So I was just wondering if anyone else was told to stay away from fruit smoothies, but found them to be helpful?

Newbie waiting for ESG consultation-looking for advice
Tex Slim 66 replied to MomInCanada's topic in Endoscopic Sleeve Gastroplasty Forum
Hey MominCanada, welcome and thanks for sharing. I had an ESG in November last year in Houston. I checked out Dr. Marvin and was confident in him, you should have a good experience. Stalls, great question, we all have them and there is usually more than one in my experience. It's a large change that our bodies are going though and each body reacts differently, it's not a linear process. I had a stall for 10 days where I didn't lose any weight, gained 1 pound and then afterwards in 2-3 days lost 3 pounds. Difficult for me as an engineer to explain. Water consumption and keeping it high seems to have something to do with it, see several recent posts in ESG forum. A number of us have had stalls, gone back and increased our water intake back >60-80 ounces per day and continued to lose weight. I have a goal >> than 20% weight loss and am about half way there. I would encourage you to discuss your goals clearly with Dr. Marvin and ask his opinion with your specific body size/shape and goal is ESG the best way to go. I had this same discussion with my Dr. and concluded VSG or ESG would work (I did not want something temporary like balloons) and eventually chose ESG due to the simpler procedure and quicker recovery time. My diet is very similar to a ketosis diet (only smaller portions) and when I have my blood checked I am deep into ketosis. Typically eating 2 eggs in AM, 3 ounces of protein at lunch and dinner with 1/4 cup green vegetables and 1/4 cup brown rice or pasta. I will do a yogurt for snack in AM and sugar free chocolate pudding for snack in PM. Total 800-1000 calories/day. When I spoke with the dietician we agreed this was very similar to a keto diet. I have the same approach with sharing, other than my wife not talking about procedure with others. I have told them I'm working with a doctor on a very strict diet, with blood monitoring, etc. Diet is focused on on lean proteins and similar to keto approach. So far so good on that front. Keep the questions coming, we're here to help! Please keep sharing it can help so many others! Tex -
Hi Texastina! What is your pre-op diet? Mine was Myocel 2 times a day with a oatmeal and yogurt breakfast and a lean protein and green vegetable dinner. The first 3 day were pure agony because I was having to detox from a Girl Scout Cookie binge! 4th day on was a lot better.

I've seen a lot of threads about different types of Protein powders, shakes, etc, but haven't come across one yet for ways to pack in the protein in other forms, so I figured I'd start one. I'm only a few weeks out so my diet is still limited, but so far the things I've found are: Oikos greek yogurt 110 cal, 0 fat, 15g protein! It's kinda sour, so I usually add some Bear Naked Protein granola. Bear Naked Protein Granola: 140 cal, 7g fat, 5g protein Kashi Go Lean High Protein & High Fiber cereal: 140 cal, 1g fat, 13g protein Special K Protein Plus: 100 cal, 3g fat, 10g protein Carbmaster yogurt: 80 cal, 4g carbs, 12 g protein (i can only find this at Smith's, so i'm not sure if that's true of everywhere, or just here) Frigo Light String Cheese: 60 cal, 8g protein 1g carbs I'd love to hear what other products people have found. I'm not a huge fan of the shakes, so as my diet progresses, I'd like to add a wider variety of protein options instead of going back to shakes. Right now, my favorites are yogurt and granola or Cereal with milk. Since skim milk has 8-9g protein (depending on the brand) I can easily get at least 18g in one quick meal.

Click HERE (LBT thread on Greek Yogurt). I love the stuff...it's replaced reg. yogurt and sour cream for me. I doctor it up all kinds of ways...just this week tried adding the Knorr Veg. Soup mix as a dip for veggies and I love the preserves with it.

I'll be 35 in a few weeks. I need this change in my life, I feel, to move forward and really grow, not only professionally, but personally too. I've only told a few people about my surgery. I have two neighbors who know, and the person who's taking me on the day of my surgery. That's it!! The person taking me, also has a band. We've become a lot closer since I found out she has the band. I had asked one of my two neighbors to take me since I though I'd have the surgery shortly after I decided it was for me. Insurance had other plans though. It's been a while now so I'm sure she's forgotten it. I was going to tell my mom, but changed my mind. I don't like keeping this from her, but while she was here for C'mas, she left a food-stuff here saying that it would help me lose weight, "be a better choice for me". It was a butter made w/ yogurt. I don't really eat a lot of butter, and it hurt me. I know she only did it to help, so I can't really be that mad. But that's what changed my mind. I'll tell them after I've lost some weight, when they see me next, in March or so. I'm also hoping that this weight loss will improve my career. I work in a male-dominated field and I'm very frustrated that I've not been promoted in the 3 years I've worked there. Plus the fact that when a position came open, and they promote from w/ in (Hahaha, jokes on you!!!!), that I was not even considered for it. And Yes, I did tell my boss that I wanted to move into that position!!! What good is it to keep getting certifications if you can't/aren't being allowed to use them???? That's most of my story. I won't bore you w/ the rest but I'd love to hear why you have decided or not to tell who ever! Shandra TX_IT_Chick!!

I know we are suppose to eat Proteins first to help with the feeling of satiety. Truthfully I haven't really applied this except for dinners. Breakfast is usually yogurt - so no solid Protein there- lunch is salads, Soups, or egg beaters, or veggies/fruit so limited solid proteins. What proteins to you eat first for breakfast, lunch, and dinners? Does it really make a difference getting proteins in first?

Full Liquids - 10 Days Post Op
Kelligirl replied to HadToDoIt40's topic in Post-op Diets and Questions
I am 5 days post op and not full liquids yet. But I think you may need more protein, cottage cheese, liquid yogurt, egg custard, sf pudding. I am looking forward to trying these next week. Your diet was my 2 week pre-op and protein shakes are not settling well with me. I found a recipe for full liquids on this thread and it's cottage cheese and tomato sauce in a ramakin. Taste like lasagna, sounds good right now. Hang in there & keep me posted. -
Call your nutritionist. I was allowed yogurt on full liquids which would be the same consistency.

I'm piggy-backing on this topic. I am 9 weeks post-op and my PA wants me only eating things I can eat with a fork. No more Protein shakes (and no protein bars). Based on no Water 30 min before, during or 60 min after meals, how the H do you eat and drink??? I need 100+ hours in a day to get all the fluids and Proteins in without breaking some kind of rule. A yogurt is 12(ish) grams of protein, but eating 1/3 gives you 4 grams. Same with everything. I can't even eat a whole egg at a time. Am I missing something? As it is, I'm still doing a Premier Protein every morning to at least have 30 grams in. Thanks, and sorry OP for butting in
