  1. Hello, I also have RA and Fibro... I was sleeved on Dec 19th, 2016. As far as complications. The only thing I've really been dealing with is the vomiting and that I'm guessing is just from learning the amount that I can take I'm not even close to a fourth of a cup of intake... It's quite a bit less than that and I have to wait about 5-10 minutes before I can have anything else intake wise. Heartburn / acid reflux is a major problem, I take Prilosec now but it only helps for about half of the day, I don't know if I should be taking 2 a today... so I'm just going to switch up and try different over-the-counter Med. I'm not too terribly concerned about it because I'm sure it is just being able to find the right combination of meds it's going to work for me. As far as my fibro pain or anything of that nature, I haven't really been experiencing any pain since I have been at home recovering, if nothing else I feel that this is going to be better because of the weights Los will be easier on my bones and muscles. Best of luck. Sent from my SM-T800 using the BariatricPal App
  2. Hello Everyone! I started my journey to get the gastric sleeve. I have to do 4 months of classes. My questions is I have RA and fibro and scared of the possible complications due to my conditions has anyone had any complications and not able to take meds? I'm on a fb support group and get freaked out. I was sure this is what I wanted until I started reading some of the complains. Horrible acid reflux, nausea, vomiting, losing teeth and so on. So I'm a bit freaked out at the moment. Lol, any info from anyone with a autoimmune disease will be helpful. Thanks everyone!

    8-1-16 My story began

Thanks for everyone's support. I haven't posted anything in a while mostly because being busy with the holidays and such...My lapband surgery been nothing but great to me. I have not had any complications thus far and feel great. I started my journey at 287 pounds just 13 pounds of 300 pounds on August 1st 2016 and I am Currently at 222pounds. Losing 65 pounds in almost 6 months has been a life changing experience for me. No more back pains, feet hurting, bad sleep and I can list many other things but the best thing is that now I can go zip lining with my daughter, we have gone parasailing together and we hike..I'm excited to continue my journey for myself and for my daughter and see where this takes me !! Over 200 pounds down!

@@bitingcat Thank you! I was so worried I missed my honeymoon period because of all the complications. I had a lot of trouble losing while on the TPN infusions because they were infusing 1200 calories each night while I couldn't eat. Then when I was finally able to eat a little (300-500 calories) a day I started to gain weight because they were giving me the 1200 on top of that. I was in and out of the hospital with blood infections and extreme nausea and pain. I also had (and still have) pretty bad anemia. The weight wasn't coming off like I thought it would. It was VERY frustrating. Thankfully I am feeling 100% better and am able to work out and eat all my calories on my own. Everyone loses at a different pace, when you have injuries and illnesses it just further complicates things. You can do it! Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

    Does it get better?

I was really lucky - I didn't have much nausea at all. Most of it was probably my surgeon's very vigorous anti-nausea protocol. I also worked really hard to stay hydrated from the get-go because I tend to get sick really easily. (Two pregnancies that felt like endless motion sickness - I literally threw up from pregnancy test to the O.R. table during my c-sections.) Having said that, do keep in touch with your doctor to make sure you're within normal ranges and aren't experiencing serious complications. Track Fluid intake, etc. It can be hard to tell the difference between, "Sucks but I'll survive," and "Needs medical intervention now." And I'm saying this as someone who just got yelled at by their surgeon for not making a hematology appointment when staff "suggested" it last week. . With that out of the way, here's what I found to be helpful. "Ultima Replenisher" No-cal, stevia sweetened, electrolyte drink. I got an assorted flavor pack off Amazon and would add part of a packet to my Water and it made it SO much easier to drink. I think the inherent dehydration and nausea can just spin cycle off each other and make it really hard to kick once you're there. The extra electrolytes and little bit of flavor really helped. I also would have a thermos of bone broth with me that I'd sip on whenever I could. My favorites were the chicken broth my honey cooked with a Parmesan rind, and chicken broth with a spoon of miso paste and soy sauce (both were filtered after cooking). Notice the "salty" theme. But I made it my mission to drink one over the course of a few hours. Or when I woke up at night. I also drank unsweetened herbal tea - my favorite was the Sleepytime Peach because it was chamomile based but had a hint of mint that was amazing for my cranky tummy. Once I moved past Clear Liquids, I had a hard time with Protein shakes, but could tolerate yogurt or kefir with a drop of berry stevia. It does get better - I'm at three month and can eat and drink most things within reason. Still like my Ultima Replenisher packets, especially if I'm fighting off a cold or overdoing it. But I absolutely spent most of the first month just managing eating, drinking, and meds. And the first couple weeks of forcing down liquids suck - it's like the worst full time job ever. Good luck! 7. I had RNY on 12/28 and I have had zero complications and I'm eating well. I had the lap band several years ago and I feel that has helped me understand the importance of small bites and chewing food to a soft consistency. I've lost 19 pounds in 10 days. Bariatric weightloss medications

As for medications, I had success at first with phentermine in college (when I was slightly overweight, but not obese), but it then caused insomnia, anxiety, hair loss and a host of other problems. My endocrinologist refuses to prescribe it anymore. The only doctor I know of in the LA area who does prescribe it requires that you come in every week and jump through hoops and pay high fees in order to get it. A friend had tried Xenical and said it was a miserable and costly experience. I'd definitely read through reviews of any medications you're considering in advance to read about the potential complications and side effects. As for the OP's age - I don't think you're too old at all. My friend's 76-year-old grandmother had VSG because her weight was causing such severe pain in her knees and joints, and her diabetes was becoming increasingly severe. She did have it in Mexico after being denied by insurance due to her age, but did extremely well. (I also had surgery in Mexico and had a terrific experience.) She's in her 80s now. She's traveled the world since having surgery, most recently to Ecuador and Antartica. She said she's making up for the lost time when she avoided travel due to a lack of stamina, and the embarrassment she felt flying when she was larger. There are people who live into their 100s, so you could have decades ahead of you. Regardless of how much time any of us have, what's important is that we live rather than just exist. Don't sit on the sidelines when you could be in the game.

    Secret Surgery

Oh, and as far as recovery, unless you have a super physical job or the college has dozens of flights of stairs with a huge book bag to lug around, I was out 5 days and was fine -- with a 2 and 3 year-old! Some people have complications, of course, but once the anesthesia was out of my system, by day 2 I was doing great.

    Secret Surgery

I told a mix of close family and friends but stayed mum to the general public. IMO, most WLS patients have so much to lose, it's not apparent we have lost until you hit a decent percentage of your excess weight. Since you are petite, probably 30 lbs. I had lost 15 lbs in 2 weeks pre-op and didn't change a size, but I'm 5'8". You can totally keep it under wraps, and after reading countless stories of insensitive-at-best, horrifically undermining and cruel-at-worst, I'd say nothing! I've had a few people ask how I'm doing it now, but I say the truth. I'm tracking meticulously every blessed morsel that passes my lips, am low carb/high Protein, working with a nutritionist, focusing on my health as my top 5 priority, and periodically check-in on FB at the gym, so people know I'm doing a physical component to this, too. I'm not bothering talking about the surgery, which is a shame, because I think it's a huge blessing in my life. Most people either want to tune out that there's work/changes involved and think you took the easy way out and do nothing to further your health, or they regale you with the brother's wife's aunt's teacher who regained all the weight and died of some freak complication they heard about. Sigh.

    Surgery and Menopause

I was banded in 2010. 8 days ago I got my band removed and had a sleeve. Since the band didn't remove any anatomy, it didn't change my hormones, PCOS actually improved! After sleeve, it's hot flash city!!! I lost 100 originally, but gained from complications....almost back to 100 down!! SW:327 CW:239 GW:155 Heather in Texas

    BCBSNC coverage

I have BCBS NC and had my surgery last year. I would say that the safest bet is to figure it will cost whatever remains on your out-of-pocket maximum if you have a plan that includes separate company's (which typivpcally do not count towards your out-of-pocket costs) then add that copay in as well. I used the cost estimator but don't remember if it was accurate. If it had been wildly inaccurate I'd probably remember, though, so I'm guessed NC it was correct within a couple thousand$ or so. If you go to a Center of Excellence (which I highly recommend), then they usually have a person who can help you figure up your costs. Avoid getting your surgery in late Dec if you can. I did it Dec 29 and had complications which sent m back to my local ER on Jan 2... which started a whole new deductible year! We will be paying off those medical debts for a loooong time

CAN you eat vs SHOULD you eat

A lot of people think the sleeve or even the bypass will prevent them from eating certain things. The thing is even with surgery. food addictions will make people eat things they shouldn't ignoring pain and discomfort. Nothing but not wanting to is going to stop people from eating things. I purposely chose the sleeve over the band and the bypass because it offered the most normal life post op. I knew I would be able to eat basically anything if I didn't have complications. That was the appeal of the sleeve. After months of eating healthy and getting results from it. I never want to go back to eating how I did before. Not even a little bit. The benefits of losing weight and being small far out weigh the taste of any food. Yet, I don't feel deprived at all because the sleeve helped me change my attitude about food. I hope that more people can make the life changing mental changes with food that are really the key to success. Surgery, the physical part is such a small fleeting thing.

    Sleeve vs bypass

I chose sleeve for the same reasons. A few doc friends refer to the bypass as the gift that keeps giving, add in years Duan the road complications can still develop and need surgical correction. Sent from my SM-N900T using the BariatricPal App

    Sleeve vs bypass

I would get a second opinion. it just never hurts. complication rate is not significantly different between the two surgeries. I went with bypass because i could not risk reflux with the sleeve having had it before. patch Vitamins are working for me, and sleeve patients also have Vitamin supplements in their regimen, just one less. i'd say the major difference seems to be the bypass portion which could give you dumping syndrome if you eat the wrong foods to excess (particularly sugary foods). I will dump if I drink a Protein shake too quickly so I slow down and am fine. I have had a bite of my husbands dessert and am fine and have no desire to test beyond that. The dumping syndrome appealed to me as an extra reinforcement. bypass takes an additional 25 minutes to perform (75 vs 50 minutes). any surgeon you speak to should share how many of each surgery they have performed and should have their own personal complication rates for their procedures. got these from my surgeon. first is bypass second is sleeve. t are the chances I might die from this surgery and are there any other immediate risks? Sleeve vs bypass

You should definately seek a second opinion. There are pros and cons to both surgeries and both are very effective at massive weight loss. You and I are close to the same size and weight. I was 310 and 5'10" when I had my surgery. I chose bypass because of the benefits related to gerd and diabetes among other things. For him to tell you that you are not overweight enough does not make sense (no offense of course to your current weight) I originally was going to have the sleeve and because of my gerd and diabetes we chose bypass even though i have Psoriatic arthritis. With the bypass i can no longer take nsaids which is not recommended post either but more so with the bypass. Anyway, i could not be happier with my choice. I have had literally zero complications. I followed my plan from the beginning and stick very close to it now. What complications was he referring to? Lastly I would say either of these surgeries can get you to your goal and help you stay there. I have seen people on this site with both surgeries lose all of their excess weight.

I regret getting the band and not going with the sleeve. I had band complications, but am only 1 week out on the sleeve. I lost 100 lbs with the band and all complications were band related, so I don't See having too many problems with the sleeve! SW:327 CW:239 GW:155 Heather in Texas

    Needing Advice

Start practicing! When I made my decision, I put myself on a 1200 cal limit and reduced it gradually to 800 cal the month before surgery. It was a great learning curve for me! If you still have a snacking problem when you get wls, you might seriously injure yourself if you continue the behavior right out of surgery. It is also possible to eat around the wls and then you have had a big surgery for nothing. You might consider seeing a therapist before surgery. That will increase your chances of a safe wls and the result you wish for. I used an app to see how to adjust my diet towards my post-op diet and life. Myfitnesspal works well for this purpose. Hi Protein and low carb with non-calorie fluids. And quit smoking now if you are a smoker. Do your research. Watch youtube videos of both good and bad outcomes, talk to people and go to classes. You need to have a knowledge of complications so you can communicate well with your team if something should occour. Good luck to you! Nilla
