    FINALLY!

Thanks! It was a very long 3 months. I had my revision Jan 13 2014 and up until now I've only lost 7-10lbs. I was getting very frustrated lately because the scale hasn't moved and I was reading how it seemed like every other person out there was dropping weight like crazy and it seemed liked they weren't doing anything to lose the weight. Since I can eat more that 600-800 calories at a time I will have to work harder at losing the weight. I am determined to get results and lose this weight!

    Psychiatric Evaluation

Yup...Want to know why you want the surgery so they can make sure it's for the right reasons such as health, more mobility, less aches and pains etc vs because you want to get a boyfriend/girlfriend, become popular etc. They do make sure you don't have an eating disorder, want to make sure you realize it's a life long decision and they want you to know you can call on them for any questions you have afterwards. They help make sure you're in the best mindset for the surgery and have realistic goals. I really liked my therapist and only had to see her for two required visits. I had started seeing a therapist who deals with food issues outside of the bariatric center before I even started with them just to make sure I have the tools I need to make the right decisions eating wise and dealing with the head hungry issues. But then again I've gone the bariatric route before with my lapband so I knew already that I wanted to make sure I had the help with this more permanent change. My lapband had to be removed after it prolapsed really badly - I had already had it revised once before. So having gained almost all my weight back I knew I wanted the help to keep me on the right track after this surgery as well. It's been a great help. There are a lot of great books that help too. Good luck with your appointments

    Goal Weight Setting

My surgeon has not given me a goal weight, either. His PA just gave me the average "excess weight lost" percentage range (60-70%) as an idea of what I could expect to lose. That would have put me between 165 and 175, which is still obese for my height (5'2"). Initially, I chose 145 lbs as my personal goal even though I would have still been in the "overweight" category, because it's a weight that I felt OK at in college, and I simply could not wrap my mind around being any smaller than that. But once I really started losing post-op, I revised my goal to 135 lbs, which put me at the top of the "normal" weight range. I'm now at 128.8, just a few pounds heavier than I was in high school! I had to postpone my 6-month follow up until after the holidays, but I'll see what my surgeon has to say then. @@WL WARRIOR - Where did you find the info about working towards a "set point"? Does Dr. Weiner have a website, or has he put out a book? I'd be interested to learn more!
  4. Hi everyone! I have my LapBand revision to sleeve next Tuesday. I'm starting my pre-surgery diet tomorrow. I'm starting to get more excited and nervous. Dr. Aceves will be my surgeon. For those of you who had him, can you tell me about cellular service at the hospital? I understand the hospital is very close to the border. Do you think I'll be roaming or charged for international usage if I use my cell phone there? Only one person knows I'm going to have the surgery, and I'm going alone. I don't want people getting worried if I don't answer my phone for an entire week. (I live alone, too, so my family checks on me every so often to make sure I'm okay.) Any thoughts? Closely related, I think the nurses will call someone when surgery is over to let my family know I'm okay. Is that correct? If so, I'll have them call my sister. She's the one person who knows I'm having the surgery. She's a nurse, too, and she's had the surgery, so she's been helping me about what to expect. Most of my questions now are specific to having surgery in Mexico and by Dr. Aceves. Thanks in advance!!
  5. Just speaking from a personal stance, I believe in insurance because life is unpredictiable....the surgeon I chose office tried to help me in getting the complication insurance but the insurance compan rejected me because I was a revision patient, I thought about changing doctors because I knew of another doctor and the insurance company would cover me, but I decided to have faith and stick with my doctor.... Now post-op I'm praising God I made it, I'm having a few bumps in the road but I believe its from doing too much too soon.... In my opinion, get it, because you just never know, esspecially since you are planning to leave the country

    New hair growth PRE-surgery!

During my pre-op and for the first 2 months post, my nails grew like crazy! To the point that I had to actually get clippers and cut them so I could type. That's never happened in my life! I also attributed it to the revised diet with increased protein. I've always had a ton of hair so I didn't notice any increase as far as that goes. Today marks 11 weeks since surgery, and my nail growth has slowed, but I still haven't lost any hair. HOWEVER I will not be surprised when it happens.....haven't heard from anyone yet who didn't experience it.....

    Band to sleeve?

So I saw my surgeon today ... in process of all the crap I gotta do to revise to sleeve. Thank you all Sent from my SM-G928V using the BariatricPal App
  8. Hi Scole. Wondering if you have had your surgery as of yet? I am hoping to have the same revision and would love to hear from someone who has gone through it.
  9. Revision surgery? I was sleeved, nothing to revise to since all of my health conditions have been resolved.
  10. Hi! I had a Lap to RNY conversion on Wednesday. The surgery was scheduled for Tuesday, but the anesthesiologist pumped me up with too much gas & they had to try to do the surgery the following day. I was an add on patient for Wednesday. The procedure was supposed to be strictly a laparoscopic surgery. I noticed when I came home that I have 10 lap sites & 1 open incision on my left side. The site is puckered in VERY deep & looks like a huge/wide/ scary roll with sores inside of it. The "sinkhole" is completely disproportionate to my body. I didn't know if this was normal. It's extremely painful & I am so upset. I'm not trying to complain. I am completely grateful that i was given the opportunity for a revision... I just don't know, if this will look like this forever... Or if it should be this painful... Has anyone else went through this? I don't know if this matters, but I started out at 285. Thanks, guys!

What made you choose the sleeve?

This is my standard reply when this question pops up every couple of days. I won't try to sway anyone one way or another, but I'll give you my reasons for choosing VSG over RNY for my revision from the band. You can also check out the revision, failure, and food issue forums on here to get an idea of some long term RNY patients. For me, it was never an option. The cons outweighed the pros. The VSG was my 2nd, and final WLS. I could have easily had RNY, but I fought to have VSG as my revision from the band. Some factors I considered in deciding on VSG. The pouch that RNY offers is similar to the pouch with the band. Least to say, a pouch sucks, I love having a normal tummy, just less capacity and still fully functioning. 1) No blind stomach left behind that can be difficult to scope yet can still get ulcers and cancer. 2) 2 years max on calorie/carb/sugar malabsorption, but a lifetime of vitamin/nutrient malabsorption. This process is called adaptation, and it happens with intestinal bypass surgeries. 3) I had a pouch with the band, and it sucked. I'm pretty fond of my pyloric valve and the sleeve let me keep it. I love having a normal functioning stomach, just smaller in capacity. 4) Regain stats and #of RNY patients seeking revision truly scared the poop out of me 5) I have too many friends in real life that struggle with Vitamin deficiencies post-RNY, and most of them either never got to goal, or have gained back a significant amount of their weight. 6) The long term complications with RNY were too numerous for my comfort level. Pouch or stoma dilation, strictures, vitamin/nutrient deficiencies, ulcers, 7) I researched gastrectomies that had been performed for stomach cancer and ulcer patients, and found comfort in the long term results and minimal complications of patients that had lost most or all of their stomachs had dealt with over several years. 8) I was a volume eater, and knew a restrictive only procedure would work for me. That was my thought process when I got the band, and I thought I could beat the odds on complications. Sadly, the band only lasted 8 months before I had to revise. 9) I did not want to have food or medication restrictions. I chose WLS to have a "normal" life, and I think it's normal to eat a couple of Cookies. With RNY, I wasn't willing to go through the possibility of dumping if I wanted to have a couple of cookies, or a slice of cake on occasion. The big scare for me is medication restrictions for life. NSAIDS and steroids are a NO GO for life with a RNY pouch. I realize that I may never be diagnosed with a condition or disease that requires steroid use, but it is possible. I want the best long term results with the least amount of complications. Malabsorption is not anything to play with in my mind, and I was not willing to take that risk. I lost all my weight in my ticker with the exception of 7lbs with the sleeve, and I did it in 10.5 months. The 115lbs fell off the first 6.5 months, and then the rest I lost as I was getting into maintenance over another 4 months.. It's been a fabulous journey, and I'm easily maintaining with zero issues for nearly a year at this point. I want to add that every WLS regardless of your choice will require discipline. Only a percentage of RNY patients dump on sugar/fat, pouches and stomas stretch, then you have the medication restrictions. I'm not trying to convince you, but these were my concerns when I knew I had to revise from the band. I started at 263 the day of my revision and today I weigh 127lbs. I bounce on the scale 125-130lbs any given week, and I couldn't be more ecstatic! Best wishes in your research! P.S. I wrote this before pregnancy, and think it's only fair to add that I'm thriving in my pregnancy. Zero deficiencies, zero nutritional issues for my body and the growing baby. I have gained about 10-11lbs in 20 weeks of pregnancy, and my doctors are elated with my progress. Nothing has been challenging in the pregnancy, nor is the pregnancy anymore complicated because of VSG. I struggle with the physical changes, and the weight regain, but it's a work in progress.

    Surgery scheduled tomorrow

I had my breast augmentation revision done last Friday and am a bit sore today myself. The boobies look great, and now hopefully I can be done with surgeries for awhile now. Glad you're doing well post-op and adjusting to the liquid diet. This is the hardest part, when it's over it will be smooth sailing from here on out. When you get to mushies you'll think you're in heaven! Best of luck with your recovery - sounds like you're doing fantastic!
  13. Thank you for the responses....I'm looking forward to my revision....excited and nervous at the same time!

    negative people

Yes, I did have my sleeve done on Sept. 15th and was revised from the Lap Band - so this is my second go round. Lucky, if I were in your shoes, I'd just have to sit down with my parents and tell them that the reason you let them know is because you are their daughter and felt they should know - however, it's your body and you are going to do what YOU feel is best for YOU. If they can't be supportive then to please keep their opinions to themselves. I know it's easier said than done, but for your own sanity it just might need to be done. I believe in time they will come around. Hugs!!
  15. Lying in ICU. The could not do the lapband remaval and revision in one. Work thought I will be off for three weeks. Now only probable two days coming back in three minths. 16. Hi I'm Rebecca, 28 year old married female from NJ. I got the band this year but am having stuck/regurgitation issues and extremely slow weight loss. My Dr has ordered a barium swallow for Monday so we can talk about revision. I wouldn't be surprised if he made me wait a while which I am okay with but so could use some support on the journey. If you could be of assistance/ be a mentor/buddy I would greatly appreciate it. Thank you!!!!

    Advice please band to sleeve

I was revised band to sleeve in Oct 2014. Complications I've encountered personally: i have developed GERD, for the first 6 months i was lactose intolerant and could not eat any form of meat for the first 5 months. My gall bladder had to be removed 3 months after i was sleeved (this is quite normal due to losing a lot if weight in a short amount of time). My GERD is being controlled by taking one 20mg tablet of omeprazole a day. Thats about it! For me the revision has been 100% been worth it.

    I'm new, surgery date 1/27/13...

Lovely momma, I'm a revision too. I found the sleeve surgery much easier than my band and the port revisions I had. It was also easier than the band removal. The post and pre diet was not easy, but it does give some great results.
  21. Hi Everyone! First - thank you all for your responses on my previous posts.. everyone has been so reassuring. Much to my surprise I feel like I need even more support going through a Band to sleeve revision (6/24/14) than when I was originally banded. I think part of it is having to go through some of these beginning stages all over again, partly fear of failure, partly dealing with increased physical pain and longer recovery time. Frankly, it's been much more emotional than I anticipated. I've been having internal dialogue with myself that the pain will subside, the scars will minimize and the swelling will go down and its normal to miss food. I can have these logical conversations but yesterday I had an emotional breakdown after taking a long look at myself in the mirror. Now mind you I'm not one to feel sorry for myself nor throw a pity party but this is the most significant surgery I've had in my life to date and so the healing time is all new to me.. Yesterday I felt like Frankenstein with all the cuts, bruises and swelling..I was feeling tired and overwhelmed..luckily my husband is a great support. Having all this time to be home and think is playing tricks on me but I know this too shall pass.. How long did it take for your stomach bruising and swelling take to go away?

    Emotional Journey

Wow! This entire strand has brought me to tears. I can relate to each of you. I had revision surgery last week on the 25th. I feel swollen as well, I'm so anxious to start losing weight and secretly scared of failing again. The scars are not pretty but when I think about looking at the old scars prior to revion surgery they had faded are were barely noticeable so I'm sure this time will be no different. I'm interested in knowing how weight loss progress goes for you ladies. Its hard to others that have went from band to sleeve....hope its okay if I send ya send request and follow some of your post. I need all the positive feedback I can get. I just keep praying and asking God to give me the patience and strength I need to take it one day at a time and be happy in the moment. I've been using moist heat for the aches and its helped tremendously. Doc gave me liquid hydrocodone but I haven't taken it since Saturday.... Like I said that heat works wonders. I am trying to get back on my walking regimen as quickly as possible.
  23. Hi, I have had 3 Lapband slips and my doctor is recommending me for a revision to VSG. I just found out that he won't remove the lapband and revise to VSG in one surgery. He does it in two. I can't afford to have 2 separate surgeries. Does anyone know if there are any doctors in the Tampa Bay/St. Petersburg area who will do the Lapband to VSG all on the same day. Please let me know.
  24. I was always under the impression that a revision was going to result in more pain then the original band surgery. NOT at all true for me. This has been a lot easier and everything at 5 is going great.....I'm having such little trouble at this point, I'm beginning to worry that something terrible willl happen to me, just to punish me. I'm on Clear liquids for another 10 days......this is the worst part. Dr. Aceves wanted me on on clears until day 15 after my surgery, due to a lot of scar tissue from the band. I have my band and I'm planning my special tribute video farewell for it next week. I will post it on youtube. I'm thinking a small ceremony with a creamation at the end!!!!!!!!!! I'm sure the lapband people will be horrified.
  25. I am having revision surgery on March 14. I am totally unfilled right now and am not handling it well. They said my slip was too much for an unfill to help it go back. Keep the faith and keep us posted... Tracy
