  1. This is a good idea. I will try out a few different ones. I have the caffe latte premier protein but I’m not allowed coffee yet. Saving if for then.
  2. Once you are allowed to have caffeine the premiere protein caffe latte is really good too if you like coffee drinks. I am 16 months out and I still have one every morning cause I like the taste and it’s convenient to get a jump start on my protein.
  3. Try full skim milk with extra dried milk powder stirred in. You can flavour them if you wish with fruit or peanut butter. Plenty of protein and much better for you than artificial drinks

I hate protein drinks! Any protein pills?

I use the Premier Protein peach drinks and now I like the Fairlife protein shakes. They taste like milk. Flavored milk actually, but not as sweet as commerical flavored milks. The thing about Fairlife is, it's ultra filtered, so it filters out the excess sugars and lactose in milk. So there's no weird whey powders or that sort of egg protein in it. I love them all.

    1 month post op activities

Our bodies all recover differently. Best advice I can give is to give in and rest and take naps as needed. Your body recovers while you sleep so the more you do it now when your body is calling out for it the quicker you will recover in the long run. As far as food for energy, you may or may not be able to talk them into letting you bring in a protein shake but when you get a little further out you can usually sneak in a beef Jerky or a protein bar for longer outings where you truly can’t find a healthy option. Post surgery I ALwAYS have a cooler in my car packed full of healthy options I can run back to even if I don’t expect to be out all day. If I leave the house, I’m ready for hours with my Yeti packed just in case. And I always bring my favorite salad dressing and my sugar free bbq sauce with me so if I have to do fast food I don’t have to use their high calorie sauces. I find several healthy options at Chick-fil-A. Any of their Salads with grilled chicken or grilled nugget kids meal with fresh fruit.
  6. I hated the sweetness of All the shakes immediately post surgery. I was able to drink the premiere protein clear.
  7. I am four days post vsg. I have tried the Protein Drinks but they just taste terrible. Has anyone tried a pill Protein or recommend a protein that pairs well with Soup broth. I feel like I’m starving.
  8. I am a long time lap bander and flipped to a sleeve in 2016. In there I lost and gained weight and am back around my goal weight where I have been for a while. I recently moved to the St Petersburg area and am looking at plastic surgeons in the area. I want one who understands weight loss patient skin is different, more damaged than a standard patient. I am looking at arm lifts, thigh lift, some abdominal lips, breast lift and reduction and because I am feeling saggy maybe a small face lift. I did a tummy tuck and breast lift 20 years ago and the boobs took the hit on the weight regain I had the tummy tuck held up well. There are a ton of options in the area was wondering if anyone had experiences and recs? I am also looking at maybe going to Columbia to a practice there the quote is appealing and the doc is American board certified and teaches in the US. All the work there will be 20-25k and that includes a 10-12 day hotel stay, nursing care and transport to and from the hospital as needed.

Caffeine - 7th day post op

I would try it at home first. If there's an issue, you don't want it to happen out in public with your friends. I have caffeine every day from my Fairlife coffee protein shake every morning. Always have, and I've been fine. BUT, I was someone who would drink caffeinated diet soda all day every day, so my body was totally fine with a little caffeine in a shake lol

    August surgery buddies!

Hey everyone! August surgery buddies .... 33 years old and as you can see all my weights stats. Surgery was schedule for the 3rd of August. I am a self paying patient going to Huntsville, Alabama. I wish this would have been an option sooner in my life. I rarely see anyone on here even close to my SW. Anyways, I originally was going to go to Mexico, however, even though it was about half the price I decided to stay in the states. It is very nice to meet you all and hopefully we can make connections and keep chatting. I work 3rd shift so I tend to reply and be on in the middle of the night.

    The ENTIRE bagel???? Like, SERIOUSLY?!

I could really eat anything I wanted to 6 months out...however I found out I was not being mindful about WHAT I eating AT ALL. so when I started to really think about what I was putting in my tummy it all changed for me...I am a carb girl so I totally stopped all carbs and stayed around 30 grams per day and the weight started to fall of. This however to took almost 2 years to get my body and mind in the right place. I know when I do not chew my food and eat too fast my pouch tells me so. So yes you can but no don't do it. N not worth it. Load up on protein and veg first and then maybe later if you do want that bagel then you can have it. But by then you mostly won" t want it... Everyone is different best of luck on you journey

    June 21st Peeps

Check in on my surgiversary people. How is everyone doing. Did post op appointment go well? How is your diet going? I am on my soft proteins only at 2oz quantities per meal. They want me to get 70 of protein and at least 800 calories a day. I still drink 1 protein shake a day. Sometimes I find myself wishing I could eat so much more than I can, but I can't find a logical reason why. It has also sucked picking out a birthday cake for my daughter knowing that cake is now a memory for me. I won't be back on a scale until Monday so I am looking forward to that. So what's new with you guys?

I agree. Just pick a menu item that your family likes and research it a bit. Just type low calorie blank, or low carb blank and see what comes up. That’s how I found the lower calorie nachos because someone on here posted nachos and made me want them so I searched for a lower calorie option. Then I made them even lower by using the baked chips and the reduced fat cheese. And how I learned about the sugar free bbq sauce is I was craving baby back ribs so I searched for low calorie ribs. And I found out about sweet baby rays hickory sugar free sauce on this site. It has to be the hickory one though. The original sugar free isn’t as good. I just got some ribs from my local bbq spot that are DRY and I am having them for dinner tonight with my sugar free sauce.

I agree with starting now. If you have a handful of meals that you cook regularly ask for suggestions of calorie cutting tips or healthier options for those meals. Like for instance using frozen cauliflower crust for making pizza and topping it with chicken and veggies instead of pepperoni and real crust cuts calories and adds protein. Tacos can be made with ground Turkey and fat free cheese or made fresco style. I recently posted recipes in the recipe section for chicken and black bean nachos that I made with baked Tostito scoops and low-fat cheese and also for zucchini pizza stacks that were delicious. The pizza stacks are a little more calorie dense because of the pepperoni but you could try Turkey pepperoni to cut calories even further. I don’t recommend leaving it out alltogether I tried that and didn’t get the pizza flavor without it Little swaps, though, like Using low carb wraps anywhere you can instead of bread cuts calories. And finding sugar free and lower calorie dressings and sauces will help cut tons of calories. Also using spray Pam instead of oil to cook with or just measuring your oil and sticking to a smaller amount. During your weight loss phase you will probably have to cut down even further leaving some things off your plate but Once you get to maintenance things will get back to your new normal. I would just make a few swaps here and there to start and then a few more once those have been accepted by the family. Some things you will find don’t taste bad in lower calorie options and they are pretty painless changes. Others you may get a little grief about. 😂

    The ENTIRE bagel???? Like, SERIOUSLY?!

I'm ~10 months. I don't use portion control plates or containers, but I do frequently weigh/measure foods. Not always, maybe 50% of the time. It helps keep me accountable and helps me understand my own hunger & full queues, eating habits, etc. I typically will only portion out what I think I will/can eat. If I eat it all and feel like I need a little more, then so be it. But that is rarely the case. My husband has become a garbage disposal for my onsie-twosie left over bites. I do however still track EVERYTHING I eat. I know myself, and this is what works for me, though I know a lot of folks do not track. At this point, I could probably eat a whole bagel, but it would very likely upset my stomach. I've never dumped, but if I eat a carb heavy meal, especially one with very little protein, I get nauseous and often develop the dreaded foamies. With something like that, something considered a "slider food" its very easy to eat around your restriction. If you are mindlessly munching on it one bite at a time, its going to pass more quickly than something with lots of protein & fiber, so you'll be able to keep eating a bite at a time without ever really feeling full. Remember, restriction is different for everyone and can even vary from day to day. The surgery is just a tool, but with enough work (or not enough, as the case may be), you can absolutely circumvent it. All that being said, it was just one meal. Now you know to be more mindful going forward. Use it as a helpful bit of data and move on.

There are a ton of great bariatric cookbooks out there that can easily be doubled for a family. I would say get a few and start introducing new/healthier meals now. No need to make super drastic changes, simple swaps add up over time (low fat cheese, lower carb options, more veggies, etc.). I also did Dinnerly for a while - its one of those meal prep services but it was the cheapest I could find and had lots of family friendly options. I would look for ones that were aligned to my goals and fit my needs but would still feed my family without complaint. My kids are older, and my husband is very easy going, so it wasn't terribly hard for us to make some changes. But honestly, even if it had been, I would have simply sat them down and explained that this is for my HEALTH and my LIFE. We are doing this as a family or they can eat cereal. I'll cook what I cook and they can eat it or not. Again, maybe not an option for every family, but in the end, they will need to suck it up and support you.

Day 11 PO and so tired

Yep, the first couple of weeks I was completely exhausted and had to take naps every day. Once I moved to purees and was able to get closer to my protein goal it started to get better. Give yourself lots of grace and hang in there!

    Soft food/pureed phase too soon?

Yesterday my dietician stressed… if you are struggling and feel like you need more, “call us… we will help you make choices that will satisfy that craving and prevent you from hurting your healing stomach.” So I would suggest checking with your team… they will probably have options for you that will also protect the healing process.

    Iced Coffee

Yes, I'm all about the iced coffee!! I drink Chike High Protein Coffee in the morning. Each serving contains 20g of protein and 1g of sugar. It also contains the equivalent of 2 shots of real espresso coffee!! It's mixed with 10oz of milk. I just mix it in a shaker bottle. I was adding my collagen powder to it until I started putting that in my breakfast oatmeal. I started drinking the Chike 1 month after my surgery and haven't had any issues tolerating it. There are several flavors to choose from - my favorite is Chocolate Peanut Butter. It's a great way to get my coffee and help with my protein goal and I feel like I'm being a little "bad", but I'm not. It's all a win - win situation!

    Lost about revision

While technically going to different doctors looking for a different answer is doctor shopping, I think this is really only a bad thing if you are trying to get meds and stuff that you really don’t need. There is nothing wrong with getting a second or even a third opinion. I agree that knowing WHY they are saying they don’t want to do revision. Could be as simple as that your insurance doesn’t cover it or as complex as a medical issue that makes it dangerous. But if it’s the former you always should be given the option to finance and if it’s the latter than another doctor with a different approach may be able to help you. I would call and ask them why. Tell them you are seeking other answers and need to know why they feel you are not a candidate. Also, I just got an email yesterday about the use of diabetes medications now being accepted for weight loss Something like GLB-1?? They are difficult to get covered by insurance and not cheap but being covered by more and more every day Dr. Weiner, a weight loss surgeon says. Perhaps worth looking into.
  22. Another option is to find a new local bariatric surgeon/specialist. Let them start from the beginning, go over everything and do their own testing.
  23. I agree a naturopath can be a big help. If you don’t have someone near you, can your PCP refer you to a digestive health specialist in your area? Or do you have a different Bariatric or non surgical weight-loss specialist in your area you can call to speak? (My program has the surgical and non surgical weight-loss specialists in the same office. Both are overseen by medical doctors, have nutritionists and nurses). Another option to look into is your health insurance. Some insurance plans offer wellness programs (at no cost) where you can virtually (or by phone) meet with nurses and dietitians that can review your concerns, offer guidance and help connect you with medical professionals in your area that work with your insurance. Sorry you are going through this… I hope you can find answers and feel better soon.
  24. Have you tried seeing a naturopath? I was having a problem with anemia & I did not like the side effects from the iron from the drugstore! I started seeing a naturopath & she is trying a different approach. There are chiropractors in my area that look at all your blood work including all of your vitamin & mineral levels. They will tell you what you need to take to bring your levels up. I also take a powdered “greens blend”. I buy it at Sam’s for about $24. You can buy something similar at Sprouts. It called Greens Blend by Amazing Grass. It is considered a superfood. I mix a scoop into some apple juice or water in the morning. I use it to wash down all my pills. It really is hard for us to get in all the fruits & veggies along with all of the protein requirements because of your tiny little tummies! Best of luck to you.
