I am a military spouse and have recently been told that TriCare Prime will not pay for it. I was also told by one of the doctors in the family health clinic that I should switch to tricare standard and that I could/should be able to get it that way. My co-pays would be higher but 2000.00 vs. 10000.00 is a very different payment.. I dont know if this is true or not as I never looked into the possibility, I am trying to get thru all the co-morbidity tests first (including the sleep study) before I go thru with all the switching and such. I dont know anything about the needing to have two co-morbidities to qualify for any of the WLS, as my surgeon on base just that I need to have at least one... Also, do you know if you DO qualify for WLS thru the military (most wanting to do the bypass), that there are some doctors in the military who do the LapBand procedure?? I am in Florida, and the closest to me would be Walter Reed, -which is scary in light of the trouble they have had lately- but I figure by the time I qualify and get up there, things should have drastically changed being that they are under a microscope now... You will need a referal from your family practice doc to go, and they might make you buy your own ticket, or they could let you fly Space A (is it still called that?)... It would be something you would have to discuss with your PCM.. But this is certainly something to think about and help you get started on your way. Most importanly get all your tests going now, so that you know what you are working with. (high blood pressure, sleep apnea and the like...) If you havve any more questions I would be happy to help you more, You can send me a private pm if you like or thru this thread...

Lap Band Vs. sleeve gastectomy?
WASaBubbleButt replied to Char_in_Md's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
If I had it all to do over again, it would be a sleeve. Hands down, a sleeve. Sleeves have far fewer complications long term than bands or bypass. They have better and faster weight loss, no restriction issues, and I've heard of people losing their band but never their sleeve. They used to save a more elastic portion of the stomach and it did stretch. Today they save a more muscular portion of the stomach and stretching isn't the issue it was in the 70s. -
Hi gayle. i was looking at a thread you posted on, you said you followed the same food plan, as someone who had a gastric bypass, please can you tell me more about this food plan, you're weight loss has been amazing.:whoo: many thanks Toots2. xx

It is very rare for a bandster to gain all their weight back but I do know of several people with bypass who have. I would take any of these comments with a grain of salt. Reading actual studies performed under controlled conditions will give you a better idea of how it works for most people then hearing about the lack of succes of my brother's - girlfriend's - sister's - best friend from grade school's - godmother's - aunt who had . . . and failed because . . . happened.

I have been overweight my whole life. I dont even remember when i was in the 100# range. For the longest time I would tell myself that I can get this weight off. I would imagine me thin.... I was sick of not being able to walk long distances anymore, i was sick of being looked at in repulsion, I was sick of looking at me this way in a mirror. Sooooo, Four years ago, I decided that the best way for me to lose this weight was having gastric bypass. A lot of my friends were having it done. Then my mother in law and her best friend had a tandom surgery. I watched them have complication after complication. My husbad said NO WAY are you having this surgery. I still went to the meetings, and had all my evaluations done. I still was going to take the chance just so I could lose this weight. It was when my GP doctor called my Bariatric surgeon and had a talk with her about my hip problems and the type of meds I will always be dependent on that they decided for me to have the lapband. I never considered the lapband. I was told it is slow going and you dont lose as muchweight as someone who has the gastric bypass. Well, I have now lost 34lbs since March 29th <THE surgery my of day>and I could not be happier. I now know that I will make a difference in my life! I am happy that this decision was made for me instead of the gastric bypass.... Now my husband is considering doing the same thing!

I have tore my port away from the muscle 3 times. I've had two revisions to sew it back in place and needing a third just cant afford it. Pretty painful for a few weeks. With you child this will be hard but avoid any unnecessary bending!

I'm going gastric bypass. Insurance covers without doc supervised 6 month diet, thankfully. Saw that yours requires it. Ugh I'm so sorry. -

Pouch volume Vs Sleeve which one has more restriction?
Yo-yo girl replied to Yo-yo girl's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
Finally found something on this.. The sleeve pouch is (3-4 ounces) compared to the gastric bypass pouch (1 ounce) and LAP-BAND[emoji768] pouch (1/2 ounce). Found this on oliakcenter.com Yo-Yo Girl from New York City -
Hi everyone! This is my first post so I'm just going to jump right in... I had my surgery on 07/18 and I am down 16 pounds (without exercise). I plan to start walking and increasing my protein intake in hopes that the surgery along with my own efforts will make the surgery a success. Starting weight was 286 lbs. My goal weight is 190 to 200 lbs. I love reading everyone's stories. The good and the bad. Keep them coming ...as will I. Good night

I'm sorry you've had so many problems. Good luck with the bypass.

No Pre-op diet; yay!
mickeymammoth replied to mickeymammoth's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I guess my surgeon doesn't feel it's necessary to shrink the liver. He has done thousands of bypasses and lap-bands, so I assume he has the experience. He also claims a very low complication rate. So hopefully he knows what he's doing! -
Apple and almonds? That's actually pretty tough on your stomach. I wasn't allowed apples or nuts until almost 3 months post-op. I had sleeve though, not bypass, and I know some of the guidelines are different. How do you do with Greek yogurt? Cottage cheese? Scrambled eggs? Were you throwing up in your puree stage or just once you moved onto solid foods?

Hi everyone. I've been lurking in the shadows of this group for a few weeks now and finally decided that I should introduce myself. I've been amazed to learn all the stories of the brave people in this group. I'm just going to the informational seminar this next Friday so I'm really, really new to all of this. I know that I need some help with my weight and am hoping that WLS is the answer. My questions to you all: 1. if you had it to do over again, would you still choose the band over the bypass or other surgeries? 2. what has been the hardest part of the WLS, what has been the easiest? 3. what is the one thing that has helped you be successful? It's funny, I read all these posts (here and on Strugglingbandsters) about people being unhappy with thier slow weightloss. From my perspective sitting here in no-band land ANY weightloss is a gift. I guess it's all in your expectations. Well, thanks to everyone for sharing their experiences. I look forward to getting to know you all. Megan from Minnesota

Thank you to each and everyone that replied. Like Alexandra I was told by my doctor that I could eat or drink anything that I could tolerate. It was only in my research that I found that carbonated beverages could cause medical problems and I wasnt sure if this information was directed to all gastric patients or bypass patients specifically. Of course I wouldnt go through the surgery and not follow the rules which is why I was inquiring. Thanks again for the information. Tied2BeFit

Hey!!! I have been poking around this site for over a year now and it's amazing to me how quiet us Minnesotans are! I am in the Golden Valley/Crystal/New Hope Area. I would love to know if there is anybody out there near me. A by-weekly get together would be amazing. I haven't told anyone except my husband that I have a lapband so just having "partners in crime":cool2: would be really cool. I have really struggled. I lost a lot fast and then stopped losing over the summer. I was having absolutely no restriction....well a port revision and two fills later, I am FINALLY starting to understand about the sweet spot and how I am getting closer! So to those struggling it will get better! For a little bit there I was really questioning what I had done to myself. I had my surgery in St. Louis Park with Dr. Wetherill. I really like him. ~A

Anyone go to Mexico and have Gastric Bypass with Dr. Fernando Garcia?
@RealScoobyDoo replied to Lorilah's topic in Mexico & Self-Pay Weight Loss Surgery
Yes, it worked initially, I'm 3 1/2 years out and got down to 142 and stayed there until about a year ago. It was amazing!! I've since gained back almost 35 pounds and having terrible GERD. I have a history of esophageal strictures with dilations, and the sleeve has made it much worse. I got approved for the mini bypass as few days ago. BMI of 29 with comorbidities. -
Woohoo, September 7th for band to sleeve revision for me.

Hi - I have to go for 7 monthly visits (1 consult & 6 visits) for a physician supervised nutrition and exercise program (or a dietician). it's stupid really. Like i haven't tried everything under the sun already. I have to "prove" to them that i have been unsuccessful with non-surgical attempts for obesity. Like my weight and health aren't proof enough. It's very discouraging. The part that really sucks is that Tricare doesn't pay for nutrition counseling. This will be out of pocket expense. They will cover everything else but this. You may not have the same criteria as i have though since yours is a revision. I hope not for your sake!

Hard time deciding on band or sleeve.
2muchfun replied to Owl1212's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Overall, I think most studies show there's a 5-15% re-surgical rate with the band. That includes port revisions, leaky tubes, erosions, dilations etc. It is a little higher than the other three WLS techniques. Here's a video that makes a lot of sense by a well known bariatrics surgeon. How he helps his patients decide. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3VmvWFu79Ik#t=99
