  1. I'm not sure I'm in maintenance yet, because I am still losing slowly, but I am 2 years post op on July 23rd. I can eat about 3 to 4 ounce of protein, about 1/4 cup of veggies, and a bite or 2 of carbs at a meal. There are some days I can only do 2 ounces of meat. Yesterday we went out for dinner at a BBQ place and I had 3oz. turkey, green beans and a baked potato and salad. I ate about 2 ounces of turkey, a couple bites of salad and green beans and a couple bites of potato. Sometimes I can eat a little more than that and sometimes I can't. I can eat about 8 shrimp now, when originally it was 2. I can eat a small salad (like side salad). Most of the time, I eat pretty normal servings now like what someone who was never overweight eats. I eat about 1300 calories a day on average. I will probably go up a little once I'm sure I'm in maintenance, but for now I stick to 1300ish. I'm fine with not losing more and I'm not willing to cut my calories more than this, because I don't want to be starving. I'm satisfied now. Sent from my Pixel 5a using BariatricPal mobile app
  2. I Am Enough!

    August surgery buddies!

So the PreDigested Liquid Protein came in today and it is awesome! 2Tbsp gives you 20 grams of protein that will be fully absorbed! I got the grape to try out and now I'm gonna order the cherry. On the days where getting all that water down might not be possible, at least I know I can get 20 grams of protein down from 8 ounces of water!!
  3. I'm scheduled for my surgery August 3rd, and I'm trying to understand the vitamin situation. I currently take a gummy multivitamin (Vitafusion Women's) and I can tolerate those fine. Are gummies (obviously not my old ones) available and an option after gastric bypass? I love the idea of patches but I am allergic to adhesive, so that is a no-go. I'm hoping I can just take swallowable ones, if gummies don't work, but I guess chewables or liquids would be alright if they weren't too gross tasting. Does everyone take roughly the same vitamin mix or will the doc specify ones specific to me? I'm going to Tijuana, so I haven't had a lot of interaction with the medical team there yet. I'd just like to understand everyone's experience since I usually chug water with my swallowable pills and I'm not sure I can do it with a "sip". Thanks!

    August surgery buddies!

Absolutely this has crossed my mind, and I'm sure others. Take it one day at a time. You're not on a diet, you're making decisions that will change your life for the better. It's not one day at a time, it's one meal at a time. There are always healthier options. It's ok to have foods that may not be so "good" for you but to make sure it's not a consecutive thing that is happening more often than choosing the better options. I'm terrible about my mind always going to the negative but I've slowly started to learn that I have to think positive if I want positive changes. You got this, keep your head up, and know you have an entire community here to lean on when you need it.

On most things you strive for 'healthy' levels, just like non-ops. You'll find that 60g of Protein is what non-ops should get. The extra may be to compensate for malabsorption, but my plan called for 60g. Sodium, like non-ops, you want to reduce. 600 calories is a draconian crash diet in non-op life and like I said folks that do that have willpower that I don't have. For my plan from day 1 I was learning how to eat for the rest of my life. I basically ate to maintain my goal weight and lost weight down to that balance point. At any rate, for everyone losing all that weight is/was great positive reinforcement, telling our lizard brain "plan = good." All minerals, vitamins and other nutrients: you need what a non-op needs. Except you may need a bit more iron and calcium as our malabsorption seems to hit those hard. Again, fat is the same as for non-ops. Reduce it. Some Gastric Bypass folks (like me) dump on fat, so be careful. Just because we are eating less and consuming fewer calories, it doesn't mean we can reduce everything by 75% or 60% or whatever. Generally, we still need 100% of most vitamins, minerals, and other nutrients. Bottom line is you need everything a non-op needs to be healthy, you just have to do it in 600 calories. If your nutritionist shrugged on this question, well... Good luck, Tek
  6. I have not heard of protein pills, but that is not to say they don’t exist. two things you may want to try: fair life milk. Has 23 grams of protein per 14 oz. tastes and feels exactly like normal white milk. (And I am picky.) protein 20 water. tastes decent to me. About 15 grams of protein per bottle. good luck!

Congratulations on your loss. I haven’t yet shopped from the bariatric pal store. I do buy low calorie snacks from the grocery store that are empty calories though and have them on occasion. It’s obviously better if you can find ones you like with protein added so it actually fills you up. Keep up the good work.
  8. At Taco Bell, you can have their Power protein bowls. Either steak or chicken. You have to have them remove the cheese and rice, but you can have everything else. I LOVE them. If you have it with chicken, it's 240 calories. If you have it with steak, it's 260 calories. You can have everything else (I can't have the lettuce, tho, because it doesn't sit right in my stomach. But if you're ok with it, you can have it). You don't have to take anything else out, and it's SOOOOO good!!!!!! Oh, and you can add onions for 0 calories and jalapenos for an extra 5 calories. Anything else adds too many calories, but you can add that stuff, if you want it, and not have to worry. The stuff that comes with it already (besides the cheese and rice that has to be removed) is steak or chicken, avocado ranch sauce, tomatoes, reduced fat sour cream, guacamole, black beans, and lettuce.
  9. Thanks Tek I didn’t explain myself well. The nutritionist said to aim for 60-80g protein and no more than 600 kcals.. but has said nothing about sodium, fat etc. So I was wondering if there’s a calculator out there that is for bariatric patients telling us those levels to aim for? I am a small frame female, so taking 600 kcals is like 1/3 of the recommended for a healthy woman (more or less), however, due to the bariatric surgery and poor absorption, I need 60-80g protein at the moment. That is NOT 1/3 of the recommended, so I can’t just divide all the figures for “normal small women” by 3. If there is no calculator, maybe someone has been told by their nutritionist. Mine just shrugged!

    Trt - testosterone replacement therapy

I don’t know much about TRT but the greater fool has a point of it is in pill form you may want to consider sleeve because that causes much less issues with absorption. That’s why I chose it, in fact. Because according to my team some people have issues with meds that aren’t even extended release with bypass. It’s far less common but if you have meds that you know you need and no other medical reason to choose one surgery over the other, as was my case, then the sleeve is the more conservative option.

There are as many post-op plans as there are surgeons. Heck, there were 3 surgeons in the practice to which I went and each had a different program. Here on this site there are post-op plans of 500 calories per day, others have no restriction. My plan didn't count calories but I'd say it was about 1200 calories per day. I would never have been able to sustain 500 calories a day some plans require. Folks that can do this are superheroes in my book. I wouldn't have had surgery if the post-op diet wasn't rational. I should think you need to use caution taking a normal 2000 calorie diet. You are reducing calories but there are other things, like protein, that you are not reducing. Other things you need to keep volumes up while reducing other things. Your notes are likely more definitive on your plan than anything you will find on the internet. Don't trust strangers on the internet. We are often just plain wrong. Good luck, Tek
  12. Hi everyone, Does anyone know of a chart that tells us how much protein, kcals, fats, carbs, fibre and salt we should eat as post-bariatric patients? Since I’m writing everything down, I feel like I should at least check that I’m not going over the top on salt, for example. I also suffer from constipation and I would like to try and manipulate my food to help - so it’s good to have base lines! The recommended daily allowance that we get on food labels in the U.K. is for standard diets of 2000kcals per day. Maybe I should just quarter that but I wonder if there’s a calculator out there that takes different sizes of people into consideration? Hope this isn’t a silly question. My brain is still very fogged up! 🌸
  13. I've used a similar bean-based fettuccine made on mung beans (50g gives 20g protein), and it's totally acceptable with a tomato based sauce. Makes a nice change when I'm in the mood for a pasta-style meal.

    Hair loss help?

As others have said, supplements won’t stop your hair falling out. The hair on your head is already dead & was going to fall out at some time. Can’t stop a natural process. It’s just falling out faster because of the stress your body is going through. Supplements may make your new growth stronger but won’t make it grow faster. My loss started around month 3/4 and lasted about 3 or 4 months. I was in early maintenance by then & eating more & a greater variety of foods. All you can do is ensure you’re getting in your protein & a broad range of nutrients. I agree with the suggestions of cutting your hair. It will take less time for your new growth to catch up to the shorter length. The clumps in the shower don’t look quite as bad with shorter strands either 😁. Shorter hair often looks thicker & bouncier because you don’t have the weight of your long hair pulling it down. You can always grow it again.
  15. I'm in the soft food stage trying to make sure I get in my protein, so I tried this black bean spaghetti I found on Amazon. Note: It's black SOY beans, not regular black beans. But I'm really enjoying it. And 2oz is 25g of protein and only 19g of carbs.

pre op diet for 3 weeks!

Thanks for the reply. Post poning isn't an option. My time off of work not to mention my sisters time off of work to drive me. Too much to reschedule. I will fight it out. I was going to get 0 nicotine vape but was told that was also not allowed.

    Wish you knew before surgery…

I wish I hadn't stockpiled so many protein shakes/drinks based on my pre-op tastes. They're nasty now.
  20. I weigh all my food (and log in real time) before eating. If i don't have a scale, I portion control by volume. My program has that if I eat anything, meal or snack, always have some protein with it, even if it is a little amount. Cheese, meat... Etc. It helps trigger fullness and will help cravings for later in the day as well. Since you had a bagel with veggies, maybe a small addition of some protein would've helped you. Since bagels are refined carbs they are slider foods for some and will go right through you (like cake and cookies). Sent from my SM-S908U using BariatricPal mobile app
  21. Yeah, the shakes can be disgusting. Bone broths, cream soups, milk enriched with powdered milk, blend a high protein yoghurt with milk to make a smoothie (add more milk to get it to a consistency you can tolerate), protein water, are all great sources of protein as others have suggested. Even the strained broths from wonton soup & pho are good additions. You can try making up your own shakes using unflavoured protein powders too. I struggled through one shake a day (very diluted to dull the taste) for the two weeks of liquids & then never touched another one. (Had soups for my other meal.) The only protein pills I’ve heard about contain very little protein - 2g. Not worth it to my thinking & I’m not sure if the protein is complex enough for our needs.
  22. I hate protein shakes, too! After surgery, they tasted too sweet and made me vomit. I tried to get my protein from savory foods at first. Bone broth with canned chicken, chewed very well, worked. However, initially I was not able to eat enough of this. What helped me was finding an unflavored protein powder, and mixing it into soup, cream of wheat, etc. Try Syntrax unflavored protein powder.

    1 month post op activities

It will get so much better! It took about 5-6 months before I completely felt back to normal, as far as doing physical things. When you resume a more normal diet, you will figure out the snacks that will tide you over between meals when you are out. for me, it is grapes, cheese sticks, and keto protein bars. Or, I use the time that I am out to take care of the majority of my fluids for the day.
  24. This is a good idea. I will try out a few different ones. I have the caffe latte premier protein but I’m not allowed coffee yet. Saving if for then.
  25. Once you are allowed to have caffeine the premiere protein caffe latte is really good too if you like coffee drinks. I am 16 months out and I still have one every morning cause I like the taste and it’s convenient to get a jump start on my protein.
