You just had pretty major surgery lots of things will be a struggle for the first week or so & then while you are healing. It’s not uncommon for people to struggle to get in their protein & water in to begin. Honestly the first three days I wouldn’t have drunk more than a cup of broth total. But as long as you’re making an effort & there is a steady improvement you’ll be ok. And yes, warm drinks are often more soothing & easier to tolerate than cold. Don’t be afraid to use hot water or microwave your shake. I did it with my chocolate one every day. (Some powdered proteins don’t mix well in hot water so heat those after you mix them.) I swear I still can feel cold drinks as they pass all the way down from my mouth to my tummy which will then clench. I spread my meds out across the day too. Not an issue. Helped with some of the nausea from the vitamins too. It does better & easier just give yourself time to heal.

Trying to get out of my head....
SleeveToBypass2023 replied to SleeveToBypass2023's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
So update: I found a therapist and had my first session with her. It was good, but I have to be completely honest with her, which is hard. I can find ways to justify my thoughts and behaviors, but not with her. I started using MyFitnessPal. I was told it would be helpful, but it just freaks me out more. I see 900 calories and panic and cut my food in half or substitute things so what I eat is lower in calories. I've been staying around 20-30ish carbs a day, 80ish grams of proteins per day, and 20ish fats per day. I was told by my surgeon's office not to worry about counting calories at all, but here I am...counting them anyway. Now that I'm using that app, it's really messing with me more. I don't know what to do, but I really think I'm going to stop using that app. I think it's more for those who are needing help staying accountable and not eating too much or eating the wrong things, and not for those of us not eating at the levels we're supposed to because the idea of doing that freaks us out. -
Covid and my sleeve
noteasierstronger replied to SleeverSk's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I was looking for a thread like this on Tuesday. I had to make myself eat a couple days into COVID, because I knew I needed the protein even if I didn't feel like eating. It has gotten better, but I definitely am not on the same eating/drinking schedule I was last week yet. I am just trusting that if I keep doing what I can, my body will get there. Stupid COVID. I also felt a lot of hunger post surgery. Everyone told me I was wrong and wasn't actually hungry, but I know my body: I was hungry. I talked to my surgery team and they said it does happen to a small number of people - they don't lose their hunger hormone. My bariatric therapist said it's especially common in people with bipolar disorder, which I have. Eventually I was put on metformin and topamax, which have both helped. BTW, I was losing weight the whole time, and I had good restriction, but being hungry all the time was MISERABLE. Talk to your surgery center. There are options.

VSG to RNY: please give me your stats

No reflux is WONDERFUL! Mine was so bad, sometimes my voice would be hoarse for days after a bad episode. My food issues have been VERY minimal, honestly I had a very smooth recovery and adjustment. I was sick once when I went on to soft foods, some pit beef meat hit me wrong and I was sick for the day. Otherwise the only other thing I found is cold chicken, I cannot tolerate at all. I can eat any type of chicken, cooked any way you can imagine but if I eat it cold it makes me sick. I guess it is too dry or something, I don't know I just don't do it anymore. haha Never dumped, WOOHOOO! I have had fried chicken a few times. Like 1 chicken tender in a pinch or something just to get some protein in. I also eat real sugar because artificial is not for me. I don't eat much anyway though. Always been an unsweetend beverage person. Diet soda (I know it has artificial sweetener, but I meant more to cook with or sugar free treats), not a juice person, unsweet teas..etc. I have had some treats, a few bites of ice cream. A few starburst here and there. Never had a problem but haven't pounded a pint of icecream like I used to. haha For the most part my diet is lean meats and veggies, a little fruits and carbs. -

Both of these have caffeine and 30g of protein, and actually taste REALLY good: https://www.amazon.com/Fair-Life-Fairlife-Nutrition-Protein/dp/B09HPH4M7M https://www.walmart.com/ip/Premier-Protein-Shake-Caf-Latte-30g-Protein-11-Fl-Oz-12-Ct/579385346 -
Hi! I had surgery on 6/17 and went to a baseball game last Saturday. Luckily my seats were in a place I had little stairs. What I did (that may help for future outings) was drank a protien drink at home before leaving, then I sipped on a Gatorade zero with protein on the drive. I was hoping that the protein and added electrolytes would help. I then bought water at the game to keep sipping on. I was able to find a place that sold a salad with chicken on it. I can't eat raw veggies so just picked at the chicken. Hope you feel better soon! I am also hoping full energy comes soon. I am getting restless and not cleared for anything more than walking. The second I was allowed caffeine at 3 months post op, I went right back to my coffee! I don't know if you will be allowed diet soda in the future but you may not even like it if you are. I lived for sparkling water before and now if I try to drink it, it causes this uncomfortable pressure feeling in my stomach. I don't like it anymore! I make a smoothie every morning with coffee, almond milk, and protein powder. I didn't even know Fairlife had a coffee protein shake. It's so hard to find around here. I feel like I've been robbed! Yeah, done! . So glad it's over. I'm doing well with protein and liquids. Only problem I have is when I have to take pills. Doing well overall. Thanks for asking.

I gave up diet soda. I literally went through a 2 liter a day. Not kidding. I'm SURE that contributed to the misery of my pre op diet. BUT...at 2 1/2 months post op...I still haven't had any soda at all. I get my caffeine from the Fairlife coffee protein shake I have in the morning (caffeine and protein...YUM lol). -
November Surgery Buddies!!!
DaisyAndSunshine replied to Tristenhilpert97's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
So the last 2 weeks or so, I was extremely busy and didn't have enough time for cooking and eating, more sedentary except for my daily 45mins of walk. I kinda was eating around 500 to 700 calories (making sure I get more than 60g of protein) AND weight still came off 🤷🏻♀️ So @Spinozawas saying, stalls are really not proportional to how much you eat. I guess it's all about how your body processes the input to lose the weight. -
Yea I may have to get some of the Gatorade with protein. Broth just isn’t cutting it for that. Im drinking stuff, but it doesn’t have protein. Did your stomach growl a lot and it feel like you were having hunger pangs at all?
-
I had the sleeve as well. The first couple weeks were brutal. I was able to drink cold drinks without issue tho. and yes i understand with the protein shakes. Warm is gross on those. You could also try other protein drinks. They sell like gatorade that has protein in it and other water type drinks that have protein.

I had the sleeve done on Wednesday. Last year I had the band removed. So Dr had to make some repairs plus do the sleeve. Dr said to only drink stuff room temperature or warm for the first week since the cold makes everything tighten up and get restricted. So I’m drinking everything room temp, but can’t drink the protein drinks warm at al. So I’ll have to drink those on the cooler side.

Hi. I’m new here. I’m hoping for some encouragement and advice. I had surgery yesterday, the 13th. I just got home today. I’m dealing with a severe headache and backache. Whenever I drink something (sip that is) I can feel it hit my stomach like a brick. So when I take my meds, I have to space them out so that it doesn’t make me sick. I have had some regret and am trying to stay positive. I like the Premier Protein drinks, but am having a hard tim with them needing to be room temperature. So how am I going to get protein in my system, besides the very little broth I'm sipping? I’m drinking Gatorade zero and diet tea because I am use to a lot of caffeine and this is the best I can do. I’m assuming drinking and then laying down isn’t a good idea either. I keep getting what feels like hunger pangs.

I did my first day of liquid diet thanks to your inspiration! It wasn't bad at all. I think you've got the right idea keeping protein high in everything. Sent from my SM-N986U using BariatricPal mobile app

Doubling up on Protein
IWant ToDelete MyProfile replied to IWant ToDelete MyProfile's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Ok, thank you! I guess that makes sense. It’s the same with vitamins. I sure wish it was feasible though. Would make reaching my protein goal so much easier! -
Doubling up on Protein
SleeverSk replied to IWant ToDelete MyProfile's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
From what I remember your body can only process/ absorb a certain amount of protein at a time so any more would just be excreted out and a waste but check with your dietician to see what they say -

I had RNY. I was in the hospital a little over 24hrs. Liquid is going ok. It’s so hard to meet protein goals! I’m feeling better everyday. The first 3 days were the worst for me. -
Doubling up on Protein
IWant ToDelete MyProfile posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hi all! I’m 8 days post op RNY and I have a question that I haven’t found the answer to while googling. I’ll call my nutritionist tomorrow and ask but just wondering if it’s possible to add protein powder to my pre-mixed shakes? Or is that too much protein at once? I’m having a hard time drinking as many protein shakes as I need but I just can’t fit them in. Between drinking all the water and waiting 30min before and after the day gets way from me. I have a shake in the morning like 8am and I’m still full by 2-3pm. -
Oh, wow! I had to have protein shakes and reg liquids. Good thing I wasn't on milk diet. I am lactose intolerant.

I’m 3 weeks out from VSG. I’m currently a eating modified regular diet. My plan’s guidance is to stay between 600-800 calories a day. When I eat I definitely fill up quickly and feel restriction which I’m pleased with but I find that I’m hungry again less than an hour later. I’m eating protein, limiting carbs, drinking water, and doing physical activity through walking or recumbent bike. I’m feeling frustrated because I feel like I’m struggling with hunger a lot more than I should. I’m already getting close to maxing out that calorie range but I’m still hungry. I know it’s not head hunger because I have physical hunger symptoms like growling/rumbling stomach. Anyone else experience this and have any thoughts/advice?

2 Weeks Post Op... Some issues?
toodlerue replied to jojolynn73's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
Maybe the spot in your throat is where they took a biopsy from & it takes a little longer to heal. That feeling does drive you crazy! Make sure you are getting all of your protein in every day. Don’t worry so much about calories right now. Getting enough protein can boost your energy. Definitely get your stool checked out! -
Good for you! I've ordered my bariatric vitamins, pre-surgery drinks, protein powder and drinks. I'm getting nervous, too. I'll probably be second-guessing myself up to the last minute!

Hi all, For me these posts help keep me in check on a few things. Everything is going well and my nutritionist has released me to more foods. On Monday I added baked and grilled fish, soft veggies, fruit etc. He still doesn’t want me to set my macros until next month but once me to get 100-120 gr of protein, and up my carbs a bit. So, I’ve added berries and banana. My weight loss has slowed down, but with adding foods and so much water loss I’m not surprised. Plus of course, you hear about the three week stall. With the added food, I certainly have more energy. Now, I need to add cardio. The weights have been going well and I’m getting stronger Pre Surgery Weight: 336 Surgery Weight: 330 4 week Weight: 305.6. Goal weight: 275 Note: I was having some light headed issues, especially when getting up. It was my blood pressure dropping. I’m now down to 1/2 a pill per day. I am hoping with more weight loss I’ll be off completely. Good luck everyone.
