    HI...Im out in Rockwall,Tx area

Maybe this will encourage you..... the coach on my daughter's volleyball team just had it done last Monday. I couldn't even tell he had surgery on Saturday. His wife had it too but it was fine on Wednesday and a revision from Lap band to sleeve and I could tell she had something done with her abdomen but didn't know what. I found out after the game. Everyone is different though. Determination plays a role too. Get up and walk as much as you can and you'll heal faster imo.
  2. Washington is ridiculous. That's why I'm going to Denver. I saved 7000.00 by doing that when I had my band done. I will be going to Dr. Weaver for my revision if things work out. He charges a fraction of what you've listed here.

    Hello ...... 36.6 BMI

Dave once you get to the correct fill level after a band, then you are supposed to be satisfied or full with about 1/2 - 3/4 cup of food. This is how you are able to lose weight, but you have to follow the rules. The band is made to be a lifetime implant, and many have had them for a long time, but sometimes there are complications where they have to be removed, that percentage is pretty small though. On the excess skin issue everyone is different, it depends on your age and the elasticity of your skin, one advantage to the band is you lose slowly and this allows your skin to retract better than very very rapid weight loss such as you have with a bypass surgery. I believe I remember reading that about 20% of band weight loss paitients need a plastic surgery after they are at their goal weight. Hope this helps. Debbie

    Salad - 4 months out

Your body cannot digest the leafy greens like it use to..and besides, unless you're adding a ton of chicken to your salad, you're not getting the Protein that you need anyway. Salad for bypass patients is a waste of time and energy...Once you're over a year out you can "stomach" it a bit better...but even then it can get stuck and cause you issues. Best of luck! Surgery went well!

Congratulations. I had a RNY Gastric Bypass 11 months ago, and I remember the first few weeks were rough. There was so much complexity built into the meal plan, Protein supplements, medicine, Vitamins, Water intake, etc. But it does get better. I reached my happy state at 6 months, when everything started to work and all the problems melted away.

  7. Hello all my name is heather and i am from Dallas TX. I joined because i am meeting with a Dr. in a couple days about getting the Lap Band. I am 5'6 310 with a BMI of 48. I meet the requirements to get the band with my insurance as long as i do a DR. directed diet plan, my insurance is aetna EPO. I have alot of worries with getting this surgry but my first one is with my insureance. this is the 1st time in over five years i've even had health insurance. I do not have a PCP and I have not gone to the doctor in at least 5 years with one exception. (emergency tooth surgery) i"m worried that even with my weight having been very high all my life i have no recent documation to prove it. Has any one had the surgy that has my similar problem? Any adivce from any one who has aetna would be great. I've read alot about both gastric bypass, which my mom and sister had with little complications, and the Lap Band, which my boyfriends father had with few complications. I have decided on the Lap band for many reasons man one being i'm less likey to die from it. Another is i want it help me loose weight not make me dump all my wieght in less than a year like my mom and sister did with the bypass. I was wondering though, since u loose so much slower how much do you loose in say a month? I know its differnt person to person i just want to get a general idea. Well i'll go read threw some threads see if i can get answers to the rest of my questions that way, thanks for anyone who reads this time. :tongue_smilie: Sincerly hopeful and worried Ps. please excuse my spelling
  8. My file is complete per my surgeon’s admin. I’m going to start the CPAP tonight or tomorrow night. The admin will call Monday to set up my ‘Results’ appointment with the surgeon, and my paperwork will go to CIGNA on Monday. Now I wait. I’m so tempted to book a date in May and only give myself 5 days till I’m back at school. HOWEVER, I will most likely choose to do the more prudent thing, and have surgery June 9th or 10th-ish when school is out. Yes, I am enjoying a food bucket list until I start the pre-op diet. My BMI is 40.9 and I’m hell bent on keeping it there till Cigna says yes. I’d love to hear from the April Surgery Buddies regarding your immediate post-op recovery. I guess that this week (fingers crossed) I will be able to join the June Surgery Buddies Group. FWIW, I began this journey on 1/15 with research into WLS. My zoom call with the surgeon’s office was 2/22. The pre-procedure testing (extensive) began in March. I started out thinking sleeve, but I have opted for bypass. I have a large hiatal hernia that will be repaired during surgery.
  9. Wishing you all all the best! My RNY was 4-5-22. Every day just gets better. My energy is still a lil low on purée 2 tbs plus liquids and shakes so not a ton of calories. All of my surgical incisions have healed. My surgery was on Tue and I was driving on Saturday for a pedicure and store run. My only advice is to toss the Food Bucket List! Start focusing on your goals of better health and go into your surgery as healthy as possible. It will help you heal and it sets the foundation mind and body for a healthy YOU. This surgery is only a tool, if you can’t wrap your head around what it means to have a different relationship with food you will risk regain and misery on the other side. My procedure was a revision after 23 yr. Pls know I would hate anyone to have my experience of regain, shame, and fear. I wish I knew back then what I know now! Tina 2.0

    Should Medicare/Medicaid cover the band?

In my state(Maryland) Medicaid pays for both gastric bypass and the lap band. There were a few people at the seminar I went to that asked quite a few questions about Medicaids coverage. However, a lot of Surgeons won't accept it still because of Medicaids slow payment for gastric bypass.
  11. Just wondering what everyones thoughts are on this subject. I do have a friend who retired and is going to get bypass which will be covered by medicare. Her insurance wouldnt cover it while she was working.
  12. When I had my consult with my surgeon back in November I asked him why BC medical didn't cover the Lapband procedure but covered the Gastric Bypass. His answer was interesting and I cannot recall everything he told me but what he did tell me made sense. He said that like any elective surgery there is a budget that is allotted and that covering a surgery such as this will end up with only a few a year being able to be done and huge weightlists (currently like Gastric). He also said that this type of surgery would be obviously then paid to him by the govt (or something like that) and that while it's not all about the money that it's not worth their while to take on a surgery that REQUIRES immense amounts of aftercare and that you don't want any joe-blow doing them and not committing to providing the required aftercare. He said it would be more profitable for him to do govt paid gallbladder surgeries and not do any Lapband not to mention he would then not be required to do a lot of post op. He choses to these surgeries and regulate how many he does to provide his patients with the best follow up that he can (he does NOT charge HIS patients for fills at all). I am probably leaving out a lot of what he told me as it was almost a month ago, but when he said it I was like - that makes COMPLETE sense.
  13. I had gastric bypass Jan 18. My highest weight was 235. My day of surgery I weighed 192. My current weight today is 136. Boy has it been a journey of ups and downs but well worth it. I will however be getting plastics in the near future. I went from a 38 DDD to a b cup full of skin YUCK!

    bummed out

dallasdoll, I am 4 weeks out from Band Surgery, and the only day I regretted it was the day after surgery, so sore I couldn't move for 3-4 days. RNY was NEVER even and option for me, the risks for way to high. My mother's friends son died about 2 years ago from Gastric Bypass and my husband's Aunt's brother was very very sick right after Gastric, he was given his last rights 3 times. He was in the hospital for almost 2 months and yes he may be thin, but he looks sickly, and he regrets having Gastric Bypass. I was watching American Idol last night and noticed that Randy Jackson looks like he is putting his weight back on and had Gastric Bypass. Don't listen to what other people say, stay on this board and you will be fine!

    OMG, How Crazy Am I????

DAMN! I wrote this post almost a year ago... 10 months or so. Today I went shopping for new jeans, I'm in a size 4 now. I was trying on various styles of jeans and for the FIRST time I saw it, I'm thin. I think for the first time I saw what I really look like. I had a plastics consult last week. Keep in mind, this is before today's revelation. I was standing there nek'ed with a gown draped over my shoulders while the plastics guy was peering at each hanging saggy piece of my body and I asked him how much weight I need to lose before he'll operate. He kinda stopped dead in his tracks, looked me in the eye with a funny expression and asked how much *I* thought I needed to lose. I said I didn't know, when I look at the scale (119#) my brain tells me I am done but when I look at my body I see another 35-40lbs. He carefully explained to me that he won't even consider operating on me until I gain at least 10#. He went on to explain that he wants to build a butt for me via fat injections but he has to take 500cc (1/4 of a 2 liter bottle of soda) from another part of my body and inject it into each butt cheek and I don't have 500cc of fat for one let alone two. So he will have to use implants instead. I didn't know whether to hug him or smack him for not seeing all the fat that I see. Yet today, I finally saw it. I am a thin person. I'm not seeing the "too thin" thing yet, but thin... yep. I am finally there. BTW... I had my revision surgery 3.5 weeks ago. Had my band removed and a sleeve done to replace my band and life is good once again!
  16. Just thought I would post these really delicious Protein bars and if anyone else has favourites they recommend please tell us them. I use Protein Bars as a Meal Replacement several times a week if I am on the run or somewhere there is no good food choices to pick from. I only like them if they are really tasty and it satisfies my chocolate craving because they are solid they also keep me feeling full for a long time. My favourite so far is an energy bar called "six star body fuel" that has 15 g of protein. I love the double chocolate chip flavoured one that has a real brownie cake taste. It tastes best when you unwrap it and microwave on high for 10 seconds. It costs about $1.67 at the Real Superstores and at 45 grams it has only 170 calories. My next fave Protein Bar is "PowerBar triple threat", the Chocolate Caramel fusion flavour. It has 225 calories and 10 g of protein and is 53 grams. It sells for about $1.99 each at the Real Superstore. Donna VBG/87 Revised By Dr. Cobourn to Lapband/06 251/164/125 goal
  17. After RNY gastric bypass surgery, your stomach will no longer process fats and sugars. That can mean the fats and sugars in milk. I became lactose intolerant after surgery. Anytime I drank milk, it immediately led to an upset stomach and a trip to the bathroom. Some of the Protein shakes also contain lactose. This lactose intolerance condition went away after about two months.

No Immune system 5 years post Op

Hi Liz I am 5 years post-op RNY gastric bypass and I rarely become sick anymore. Part of this is due to the strict vitamin regiment that I was directed by my surgeon to follow. Also, I have undergone extensive blood testing once per year to fine tweak any deficiencies in my vitamins. One thing to be aware of is that antibiotics destroy not only bad bacteria but also the good gut bacteria. So it is extremely important to reestablish these colonies of good bacteria after you complete any antibiotic treatment. This is done by taking probiotics. I have also experimented with essential oils and found them to be useful. I have developed a formula that makes me almost bullet proof for the common cold and the flu.
  20. I think the stretch of a gastric sleeve is different from the stretch of a gastric bypass. The part left on the sleeve is the muscular part, the gastric bypass, it is bypassed. So the stretch of a sleeve is not as easy as a gastric bypass which is just stomach tissue. I could be wrong but this is what I understand. Muscles can stretch but they can also shorten. If you and I quit abusing our stomach I believe it will shrink and give us more restriction. I am already feeling different, I am paying attention more. I ate yesterday in dead silence, no TV on, something I haven't done in a while. It was amazing how soon the full signal showed up. Saving the rest for later is a good thing, that's why Tupperware was invented...😀

    Do You loose weight slower

That should be told to the revision patients, and maybe it is but it wasn’t told to me..If that would have been explained to me my expectations would be different.. “catwoman7” what is a virgin bypass?
  22. I had bypass 21 months ago, but the principle is the same. I can definitely eat like a normal person, just smaller portions. Mind you, I have dramatically altered the eating habits that made me obese in the first place. I now am very careful to avoid carbs, fat and sugar. (I can eat all of those things without any ill effects, which surprised me.). One of my biggest reservations was having dinner with friends after surgery. At this point, I can order off the menu and eat a healthy dinner without anyone being able to tell that I've had surgery (although I don't usually finish my meal or order dessert). In short: yes, I can eat like a "normal" person.

    Another Newbie

I was reading on port pain after a revision. My port twisted and where the port use to be and still after 3 months it hurts like a #!@%#!! 3 months of weight gain and still no relief. Finally a CT Scan on Monday. I have had enough of hearing this is normal. This pain in not normal. I can't even bend over or cough without it hurting. Talk about my doc blowing me off. I had a lot of serous fluid after my revision. I mean a lot!! I was told no concern. See what happens on Monday. I am ready to remove my band. Its been costly and aggravating. My first 1 1/2 years went great then the port flip. I knew something was wrong from the start. NO ONE LISTENS!!! Thank god for this site....

    Protein Shots

Stay away from most of the protein "bullets" and "shots" that you will see in stores and read about online. If you look closely at their ingredient list, you will see that they are made with "collagen" protein. These products are attractive to bypass patients because they contain very large amounts of protein in very small volumes - usually 3 to 4 ounces. The problem is that collagen protein is an incomplete protein (meaning that it is missing one or more of the nine essential amino acids that your body requires and cannot manufacture). In addition, collagen (aka "gelatin" protein) has a PDCAAS (Protein Digestibility Corrected Amino Acid Score) digestibility score of 0.08. The PDCAAS has been adopted by the Institute of Medicine at the National Academy of Sciences, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, and the World Health Organization as the standard for measuring all proteins. Proteins are ranked on a scale of 0 (least digestible) to 1 (most digestible). Whey, Soy, Milk, and Casein proteins all have a PDCAAS score of 1.0. All the protein in the world is useless if your body cannot digest it.
