For anyone who hates when someone is feeling down on themselves, then leave this post now lol. I don't have anyone who I can discuss this with in my everyday life, so I'm talking about it here. But I'm just feeling so defeated. I went ahead and made an appointment with my original surgeon to talk to him about revision from band to sleeve. My band has some sort of leak or disconnection in it and will no longer hold fluid. It's useless. Now, him doing the surgery is not the problem, I'm sure he'll do it. The problem is money. I work for the state of SC but they don't cover anything bariatric (BCBS Peba). I've applied to 4 or 5 different loan companies to see what rates they'd give me for loans and the first two said they'd give me a loan, but they won't give me the amount I need to cover the procedure. Then Care Credit and Prosper gave me a flat-out "no". I'm now in the headspace where I feel like calling up my doctor's office and saying forget it and I shouldn't even bother taking the trip to see him if I can't even finance the surgery. This just sucks. I feel like I've hit a wall and it's so disheartening because up until now I have been feeling so positive about taking the steps to get revised and now it seems like even though I want this so badly that it's not going to happen. If anyone else has had issues with finding financing but found a solution, please let me know.

Any March 2021 Sleeve Patients?
njlimmer replied to LoveSimcha's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Hi all!! Checking in! I had bypass on March 3rd and then a freak reaction to the Levonox shot had me back in surgery on the 4th. It was pretty scary there for a bit so I didn’t get to home until the 7th. I’m onto puréed foods now and everything seems to be back on track ! Glad to see my fellow Marchers doing well! For those coming up, good luck! -
Not EVER feeling full 😢 (conversion lap band to bypass
loridee11 replied to Cara Mia's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
Hi Cara Mia, I had the band and converted to Bypass in Dec 2019. The "full" feeling will never be the same. I'm actually really glad about that as with my band I had all types of issues. I would get food stuck or throw up on just a small amount when I was filled. Then, I had terrible reflux and had to be unfilled for years, and even then, would wake up choking on acid. With the bypass, I rarely get either hungry or full if I eat according to plan (for me, 3 meals a day). If I'm off plan, I can get full, but only if I eat more than I need. I am able to measure my food and don't need more than about 6 ounces (over a year out) as long as I eat 3-4 Oz solid protein as part of that. If I am eating something carb heavy I can eat a lot more so I try to focus on protein like the program says. Lori -
Belguim Surgery Services Mini Gastric Bypass
mcholls posted a topic in Weight Loss Surgeons & Hospitals
Hi All, I am considering having mini gastric bypass surgery with Dr Chris De Bruyne at Belgium surgery services. I am quite nervous about having to travel to Belgium for the surgery and wanted to know if I would be in safe hands with the surgery and after care. Can anyone please tell your experience with the Surgeon? and also your personal experience with the surgery - if there was anything that you weren't aware of pre-surgery. I do have my heart set on having this surgery and I have done quite a lot of research into this, I would love to hear peoples own experiences to help nudge me in the right direction. I'm based in N.Ireland and I'm aware that there are no surgeons here that carry out this procedure so I will have to travel regardless I'm just wondering if England would be a better option? Any Advice on this would be much appreciated as I am sure you all know how I am feeling at this moment information melt down!!! -

Bummed/Crying Off and On All Day
SummerTimeGirl replied to SummerTimeGirl's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
Thanks everyone!! After a good night's sleep and coming on and seeing these comments, I do feel better. Just makes me want to work that much harder for it. We already discussed which surgery I will have weeks ago. Doc said he wanted to do the sleeve because 1. I have a history of being anemic and 2. I currently take Diclofenac (NSAID) for my lower back and he said if I even think I'm gonna need them in the future then he does not recommend the bypass. So, sleeve it is!! OAGB, I thought anything beyond 6.5 for A1C and you were considered diabetic? I tested at 6.7. -
Not EVER feeling full 😢 (conversion lap band to bypass
The Greater Fool replied to Cara Mia's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
Everything varies by the individual so YMMV. The explanation that pureed digest better than food makes no sense to me. Pureed is only slightly finer that chewed food and that difference would not affect digestion or absorption. RNY bypasses a small portion of your intestines, the part that does some of the heavy lifting of nutrient absorption. So you absorb less calories, pureed or chewed the malabsorption is pretty constant. You leave a lot of information out that would make giving a specific guess at an answer for your situation. You say you lost 130 on the band, but don't indicate how much more (if any) you have to lose. The smaller the weight you have to lose the slower the weight loss generally is. Fullness is going to feel different than with the band. The band was at the top of the stomach, so food backed up basically in your esophagus. With RNY you have a small pouch that dumps directly into your intestines, so 'full' will be lower than you are used to, and it will empty out a bit quicker, or perhaps more correctly, easier. Follow your plan. I would doubt your plan says 'eat until you feel full' but rather 'eat this much of this' or 'eat these many calories, grams, whatever of that'. Feeling full is a cue to stop before you've completed the meal. For me, feeling full happens when my pouch isn't thrilled and says enough is enough before I've eaten my meal completely. Most often I complete the meal without feeling full. Eating constantly to fullness (and beyond) is what got me to needing RNY. Bottom line is you have to learn your new situation, the new sensations. Your new reality. -
Not EVER feeling full 😢 (conversion lap band to bypass
Cara Mia posted a topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
Hi so glad I found you. I converted from 10 years of a lap band (lost 130 pounds) to bypass late January. (Medical necessity to remove lap band - eroded esophagus/lung aspiration). Lap band stops one from eating too much and I always felt full. Does the feeling of “fullness” (not dumping) ever exist with bypass??? I was told that I may not be losing ANYTHING and even have days when I gain because I am on purées and EVERY calorie/food I eat goes down. It was suggested that when I take the plunge to “real, chewable food”, my body will only take in a small amount (like the said in all the brochures “that you may not be able to eat more than a fistful of food at a time”) and so I will lose weight instead of gain. Does that sound remotely right??? I am starting to wonder if this was worth it. I would love some suggestions from people are “getting it done”. Hugs to all - Cara Mia -
I bought a couple orders of turkey chili from Panera and I get the regular chili from Wendy's. I'm 4 months post-op bypass and both taste great, have high protein and work within my daily calorie goals. Since I'm not a great cook, I've found that buying from restaurants provides foods that I actually like and will eat.

3 month post op appointment with labs
mae7365 posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I had my 3 month (actually 4 month) post op appointment with my surgeon yesterday and he was very please with my progress - no more GERD, 42 pound weight loss and a 24 BMI. He reviewed my lab work and said to just keep doing what I'm doing - one Centrum fruity chew 50+, one sublingual B12, one 65 mg iron and 2 Viativ chews daily. No super expensive vitamin regimen for me - all over the counter and cheap at Walmart! Although my doctor wasn't concerned, my Zinc level is low. I did some internet research and saw that Zinc, like B12, is often low in gastric bypass patients and sublingual supplements may be needed. Does anyone else take a Zinc supplement? If so, do you take a sublingual version? Has the supplement improved your lab results? Overall, I'm thrilled with my health since surgery. I actually sleep without waking up throughout the night with acid reflux, I walk 5-6 miles - five days a week and have tons of energy for working in the yard (which definitely needed my attention)! -
Not hungry but I want to eat!!
Tim C replied to Hopefulin2021's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
SORRY....BUT For me I have had ZERO HUNGER...NONE! I am not sure how long this will lst if it is a few weeks, months or years. My surgeon who has been doing Bariatric surgery for over 30 years told me I may not experience any hunger for up to 4 years. I trust him.I also had zero pain and had a lap band removed the same day, thats just me but I can't be alone. He has much more experience with this than anyone on here other than some bariatric doctors. I am going to stick with what he told me for now until something changes. I hd Sleeve surgery not bypass. Thanks -
RNY because of GERD, not weight loss?
estudley replied to AmandaQB's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
I had surgery 6 months ago (8/24/2020), due to GERD and what the surgeon refered to as a huge hiatal hernia. The acid had eroded by throat so badly that I could not physically swallow some days. Nothing was working, max doses of both Omeprazole and Famotidine as well as swigging Malox nightly and still having break through acid, I also required a muscle relaxant to allow me to eat. Gastric bypass was my last resort (and actually started out as kind of a joke -"remove my stomach and the acid will stop") Until a surgeon told me that thay might be the ultimate solution for my problem. While getting use to this new way of life has been difficult at the beginnig. There were many day I cried "why did I do this" it is a vast improvement from the possibility of worsing dysphsia and esophageal cancer. I no longer require any medication, have not had any reflux at all and while the quantity is greatly deminished I can eat almost anything I want. The bonus is i no longer require BP medication and the weight loss of course. 80lbs down and I feel better in my own skin, as well as being healthier and happier. -
Good luck to all fixing to have surgery!!! That’s awesome! And the ones who have had the revision already I would love to hear how things are going! You don’t hear much from people on revisions and how they are doing!

Hi! I am in your same boat. My original bypass was 11 years ago, and I am having a revision on Tuesday. It is a much more risky surgery because less is known about modifying a previous bypass. My doc is making a smaller stomach pouch and POSSIBLY distallizing (moving the anastamosis between stomach and intestine) further down the line. He tells me that after this process I will likely lose 10-20% of the excess weight. We shall see! Surgery 11am Tuesday. I should add that I see a bariatric team and they are very particular about candidates for revision; I'm not sure I would trust a surgeon who is not specifically doing WLS to make a revision recommendation. The science/data is just not out there yet. So! Good luck! See a doc who knows what they're doing! Let me know if you have questions - I'm happy to update along the way.

5 days post op and feeling scared about the future
EmperorXenu replied to pompom83's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Since nobody else has, here's a study I found: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC5406732/ I don't love the study, it's only 156 patients and boy do they have some large error bars on some of the numbers, but it should still give you a rough idea of what the reality is. In this study, the incidence of staple line leakage was 1.2% (2 patients), the incidence of staple hemorrhage was 0.6% (1 patient), incidence of GERD was 15.3% (24 patients), hiatal hernia requiring surgical repair was 0.6% (1 patient), and conversion to a gastric bypass was 0.6% (1 patient). -
Hi I had gastric bypass 16 years ago and the last few years I started to regain my weight back . I am 5’9 with 275 pounds now🥲 Going for a revision on the 22 but I have no idea if I can do it again or if there is something else the doctor can to help me loose the weight again. gastric by pass to another gastric bypass is possible? Anyone here did that?

@Tina Leo I am having a revision on March 16 also. I had lap-band then removal 6 years later. Sleeve 2 years ago and now to DS due to Bile reflux, GERD, gastritis and need hernia repair and adhesions removed. I am so nervous! I hope your hanging in there, the count down is on for us. 😁

Any March Surgeries?
Butterflyeffect replied to Hopefulin2021's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hi ShaiMarie, I have known a lot of people to do the gastric sleeve first but then ended up having to do the bypass down the track because the sleeve wasn’t as effective long-term. Every person’s experience will be different of course and hopefully your surgeon can provide the best recommendation for you. All the best!! -
I'm having my gastric Bypass on the 16th and was just wondering if anyone here is on the same day or around the same day! I have not been put on a post OP diet because I've been trying keeping my weight under control. I've been cleared by my doctor and had my covid test done today. I'm all set to go! I am now 52 years old and I have had a Lapband in Monterrey, Mexico in 2009 and a Bariatric Sleeve in Tijuana in 2017. With the Lapband I lost maybe 2-35 pounds and gained it right back and then some. It was not an adjustable band it was just a ring around my stomach according to the surgeon (who had a hard time removing it) when I did my Gastric Sleeve. When i decided to do the Bariatric Sleeve in 2017 my weight was 348 pounds and I was struggling with walking, breathing, no energy, buying/finding clothes and I was put on 2 blood pressure pills and a cholesterol pill. My Sleeve surgery went great and I was feeling so good down to 321 and loving it (I didn't even mind the liquid diet I was still on) and then I started to feel sick 2 weeks out of my Sleeve surgery and it ended up being a stomach leak on the staple line. I struggled with drains for about 2 years and finally in December of 2019 i was drain and leak free. After all that I was down 100 pounds and was weighing 248. When I had the drain I never exercised I would just walk a bit with friends every other day maybe until we didn't because life got busy or I got sick again. At the hospital I found that I was now lactose intolerant and I have not found any protein shakes I can drink without feeling sick to my stomach. I have regained about 26 pounds and i just want input on how to lose weight since i am not on any particular diet and eat all kind of bad food until I am full ( i would love some recipes or a daily menu). I have been considering the Gastric Bypass since I have horrible reflux and have been researching the pros and cons and would appreciate any input.

You might try the Thrive Lifestyle Mix. Its a protein shake but it does have some carbs. I have a problem with protein shakes. They make my stomach hurt. I recently started the Thrive 3 step which is a vitamin (in capsules) and a skin patch and a shake mix. The shake works for me and I think the reason why is because it has digestive enzymes in it. This makes it a lot easier for your stomach to break it down. It has amylase, bromelain, cellulase, protease, lipase, papain, and protease. Its like taking a whole digestive enzyme capsule with your protein shake, but its all in an individual serving envelop and you mix it with whatever you want. I mix mine with either water or almond milk, but you could mix it with soy milk if you wanted to do that. It is the easiest to digest nutrition shake I've ever done. If you decide you want to try it. I know a gal who will probably send you a sample or two. I actually have enough packets of this that I could send you a couple packets to try if you message me your address.
