Anyone use Dr Carlos Altamirano Cano in TJ?
TerraJo replied to TerraJo's topic in Mexico & Self-Pay Weight Loss Surgery
Well of course I am sorry very to hear that. I had read the instance with the poor fellow who had a heart attack. That is never a good thing to have on your record, however I can understand that sometimes things happen. I have looked for the bad reviews of this Dr and I cannot seem to find any other examples? I'd like to see the many patient complications and horror stories, as you said. I want to be fully informed. If this Dr is not "up to par" which one would you consider to be the best? Or maybe the top 5? Thank you! Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App -
Anyone use Dr Carlos Altamirano Cano in TJ?

He's on the list of surgeons we do not reccomend. He has a great personality is lacking as a bariatric surgeon. We know of many many patient complication, horror stories and even fatalities. There are so many great surgeons to chose from. I'd stay as far away from him as possible. -
Getting nervous for Surgery less than a month away. If all goes well with no complications when do people start to feel themselves again minus the food changes? For example, when do you feel you can drink liquids normally, feel no pain, are less tired etc? I think I have this built up in my head that I'm going to be in severe paian for a month but then I read posts and people are exercising a month later. It gives me hope! I recently had a hysterectomy and felt good within two days but was just tired and felt great a month later. Why does this scare me so much when Ive been preparing for months?

oh no, i meant ankle weights for the weigh in... rather than actually gain the weight Hi there! I was sleeved via insurance here in California on 12/09/16. Stay should have been one night in hospital but I ended up with a complication of a twisted stomach! I was there for 6 nights and had 2 more surgeries! Now luckily my insurance paid 100% of everything but think about this happening in Mexico! Make sure to ask what that would look like for you if you did have a complication! There was no way to know that I would be the 1% with this type of complication so you just never know! Good luck!!Sleeved 12/09/16 SW 273 CW 223 Sent from my SM-N920P using the BariatricPal App

I was in the same place I did not have the BNI or coexisting conditions. I self paid because I saw diabetes and heart condition in my future unless I lost. I never dreamed how much of a positive impact it would have and do not regret a single penny. I chose to have it done in the states and purchased a secondary insurance policy in case there were complications. Stella

Hi! I never done this before, not even doing reviews from any thing but I'm going through held with my Dgtr. My Dgtr had surgery nov 7 2016, evethhing was fine. Dec 2 I brought her back to ER for pain and fever. She had a leak. Dec 2 surgery done, abdominal drain and peg tube inserted. Dec 4 stent. Dec 9 another surgery, , washout for peritonitis. Dec 10 hemorrhage ... needed 10 units of blood in 3 hrs, ended up in lung and renal failure. In coma connected to ventilator ( artificial life) for 3 weeks. Sooooo horrible. Dr's were thinking she will die any minute. She was transferred to NY hospital, out of the ventilator 2 weeks ago. We been in the hospital for 3 months. ICU and now regular floor. She is been getting pain med which by now she is depended on it.... Dilaudid She has s tuve in her nose, abd drain, wound back and the tPN , not eating or drinking , leak still there. Planning to convert her to bypass from sleeve but they can't do it now until the infection comes down and she recuperates nutritionally, as she ended up with another leak ( 2 leaks now). planning minimum 6 months to a year. She is only 19 years old and planning to stay for a whole year at the Hospital.... She lost her her hair and her voice cause of the intubation...... She didn't have any medical problem before just the weight. She is 5,2 started 240 lbs. now 190 just because of her disease. Can any one help please. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

Who has had the MGB the longest
doc miller replied to Muñekita's topic in Mini Gastric Bypass Surgery Forum
I have had mine 9 years ago. The only complications are Vitamin deficiencies and anemia due to low Iron. Otherwise I pretty much tolerated it perfectly, lost about 160 lbs and have kept it off. No trouble with eating any foods except I have to be careful with Pasta or I can get sick from eating too much too quick. Sent from my XT1585 using the BariatricPal App -
I'm not sure if I'm allowed to post this in 2 places, but I am...(It's also on the gastric bypass page) Hi there, it's been a very long time since I've been on the boards. However I had gastric sleeve surgery in September 2014. It has been very successful, I've had virtually no complications. I only need to lose 20lbs to be at my goal weight. However, I had acid reflux prior to having this surgery and for whatever reason, the person that did my endoscope prior to surgery ok'd me for the sleeve and I stupidly thought that once I lost weight and was eating right, the acid would somehow go away. I was wrong...I don't know if it's really worse than before surgery but it is certainly not any better. I've taken prescription medicine for about 20 years for acid reflux and I still continue to need it now. I've had a few attacks in the last 6 months that have been what I would call sever. I am also concerned about new reports linking dementia and osteoporosis to acid medicines. I went 2 weeks ago to see my gastric surgeon about this and I didn't really know what to expect at that visit, however once I told her what had been happening she said here are your options. First, thing was do nothing up your acid medicine and the second thing was revision to by pass. The second one, I was not expecting, it never ever crossed my mind that I would need a revision. Now the surgeon explains how the bypass would get rid of the acid, however I have a friend that has had a bypass or still takes acid medicine. I go tomorrow for a PH balance test and an endoscopy to see what things in there are looking like, however I'd like to know after bypass do you still have acid issues? If you do, I'm not sure what the point of revision would be. Also if I were to get the revision, how much more weight would I expect to lose? I don't have much more to go and I would worry that then I'd be to thin....(never thought I'd say that:)) Anything you'd be willing to share would be appreciated.

No need to tell him unless u have complications. Since I have to change your outlook on food ; even with surgery, it's all u & willpower to make it work ; not to regain weight down the road. It's a need to know surgery. It's up to u who needs to know. It's a personal procedure just like u wouldn't go run & tell your Dad u had a hysterectomy or whatever. Just when u start loosing weight & any & all ppl who compliment u, just say Thank you it's hard word, which it is for the rest of your life. There is no magic surgery or magic pills to eat a healthy lifestyle! My best wishes 2u! Sent from my VS986 using the BariatricPal App

I wouldn't consider the band. Many patients have had long term complications, and a lot of surgeons will no longer perform this type of surgery anymore for that reason. Between those two options, I would choose the sleeve.
-
SLEEVE 100%!! I had the band in 2008. I had soooo many complications and so do many many other people. It has not been as successful as they hoped. My surgeon doesn't even put the band in anymore but they take out about 20 a year. I suggest you DO NOT get the band. The sleeve has been amazing for me. Even though I had some complications in the first 6 months (I am 8 months out now) I am so thankful for this surgery. It has saved my life!!

EXCITED! untill I watch my 600 lb life
JupiterinVirgo replied to chynadoll619's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Any surgery comes with health risks. So does being morbidly obese. I think most of us were pretty scared as surgery came closer. I know I was! And while complications are most certainly possible, if you Peruse through the site you'll see that most people didn't have any or very minimal. Every body is different. Starting weight, previously existing health conditions, genetics and other factors come into play. Focus on a successful outcome instead of looking for cases in which there was some kind of failure or destruction. While those do happen, they are in a minority of cases. And P.S. reality TV has very little to do with reality. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App -
Gryffen, I am leaning toward the sleeve procedure due to less complications and finding filling stations. I spoke with a Dr, who says he no longer performs the LP surgery. Maybe insurance purposes. Good luck in your weight loss..

Revision from Gastric Sleeve to Gastric Bypass-due to acid reflux?

They make this show to be entertaining. If they only showed stories of patients who had no issues and were very successful they would have no ratings. People watch it for the dramatic stories. Please take these stories with a grain of salt. If you are not close to that weight range you have a much lower chance of complications (though there is always a risk, this is a serious surgery that should not be taken lightly). I started at 540 and did have some complications after surgery, I am now 8 months out and would do this surgery again in a heartbeat because it game me my life back! How many surgeons/hospitals did you visit before deciding?
Little Green replied to Little Green's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
Thank you guys very much for responding! Sorry for my delay in replying; I can't get my notifications settings configured properly and apparently I am not being notified when people respond to my posts. I just assumed this post didn't get any answers. I was wrong! Thank you for the insights. I have a sort of emotional attachment to the hospital I mentioned above (likely due to my husband being treated there) so I will probably end up going with them, but I'm going to look for at least one surgeon in my area to visit as well. For those who visited more than one, what swayed your decision? The surgeon's complication rates, perceived quality of follow-up care, how many nights you stay in hospital, etc. - anything that made a difference? -
Do not get the band!!!! The research says if you do your chances of another surgery are about 50% by year 10 and continue to go up thereafter because of complications. I personally never would choose a surgery with a 50% long term complication rates that are severe enough to require surgery. Unfortunately that data was not available when I got mine so I became a statistic and had my band revised to bypass last year. Love my bypass.

Gastric bypass- Toronto Ontario - they wont do a sleeve?
Tara2000 replied to stefanie0804's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
I did my Bypass in Montreal on 2015, we had an option to choose between sleeve or bypass! I asked my doctor's opinion on it and the doctor who did the surgery on me said base on my age 40, he said choose bypass! Reasons: he said sleeve is new( 7 years) and still doctors don't know in long term how the maintenance of weight loss is going to last! They are assuming that you may gain back easily with sleeve! On the other hand he said the bypass is done since 50 years ago and the doctors have a good understanding of it and is less risky! He said if I would be in my 60 s he would have suggested the sleeve cause the result is fast enough and in that age you don't really care in how many years there will be a risk to gain it back! I did the surgery for other health issues and was 209 lb before my pre surgery diet and on the surgery day was 199! It was way slower for me to lose and in 20 months I lost 42 lb! Today I weigh 157! They said that I lost over 75% of my extra weight which is really good but I still feel I need to lose another 17 lb! Which at this time after 20 months is really hard and slow! I am very happy with my choice and had no complications! Wish you luck and either way you won't regret your choice! Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App -
Sleeve or lap band
themaestroswife replied to shon74's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I've had the band since 7/05 and I can tell you that that it was the worst waste of money. Not only did I not lose weight, but I nearly died from complications. I've finally gotten up the courage to go under the knife again and have the band removed on the 13th of this month and am having the sleeve done in April. I'm so excited!!!! EXCITED! untill I watch my 600 lb life
CocoNina replied to chynadoll619's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I've been a yo yo dieter. Low carb, high Protein I've done so many times. It's time to end this yo-yo-ing for good & get this needed surgery. I believe that TV show only shows the extreme. Any type of surgery has a risk of complications. You just have to do what feels rights in your heart. It's scary but so many people have survived & you're healthy, no diabetes or health issues. You have a better chance of healing good because of that. Height 5'0" Weight for consultation: 216 lbs. Pre-op Weight: Unknown until January 20th. My profile picture is not me. It's my "FitSpiration" body. -
EXCITED! untill I watch my 600 lb life
Middus replied to chynadoll619's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Do you weigh close to 600lbs? Most surgeons would make you lose a hell lot of weight before performing surgery on you if you did. Weight loss surgery, even though a major surgery, is rather routine. Serious complications may occur but that is not the norm. I know someone that almost died after a tonsillectomy Sent from my SM-N900P using the BariatricPal App -
I don't know why I do this to my self, I watch this show cry, get happy.. but as soon as I see them go into surgery.. or complications happen like with the two twins on the show.. the thought of backing out completely crosses my mind. '' just do low carb" I know I can't be the only one.. know I'm watching "where are they now" and all that loose skin makes the body look so in balanced and the surgery there was complications.. scary stuff ..
