July 2019 Surgery Siblings Post-Op
alex76 replied to Mom_of_Chaos's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I had my RNY on July 3, so I'm almost a month post-op. I'm feeling better each day and learning how to measure and weigh my puree meals. Getting in enough water and meeting my protein goals is a daily challenge, but I'm getting there. I've experienced Dumping once when I mixed original almond milk with a Greek yogurt in my protein shake ( too much sugar for my body), but I'm fine now that I switched to unsweetened almond milk. It's crazy how little sugar I can now tolerate. I'm also battling constipation, so another reason to get all my water in. I've also added Miralax and Smooth Move tea to my diet. It's helping [emoji4] I have zero regrets about going thru with this and look forward to the future with my amazing new tool! Hope everyone's road to recovery is going as well as mine! Lisa.. can you recommend a brand of powder you like?do you ever do shakes? Sent from my XT1585 using the BariatricPal App If I'm doing a shake powder, it is usually the Syntrax Nectars. I've come to like Caribbean Cooler as its flavor is very mellow- just above neutral. I always add a half scoop of an unflavored powder to it, as well. Brings those 8 oz up to around 35g of whey isolate. There is a RTD product called Protein2O that I love as well. Over 20g whey isolate in it as well. Flavors are EXCELLENT!!! And no whey -forward taste at all. Pretty clean flavors. Again, no milk to it which I prefer. As for the unflavored...I really like Unjury, but it needs to be ordered, so I keep a stash of other brands at home to use if I run out. I add it to anything I can- usually by the half- scoop. Works well in my Oikos Triple Zero yogurt!!! I'll add it to coffee, tea, you name it. Hope that helps!!! Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App It does! Thank you. One more question...is there one site where I can purchase samples first instead of buying in bulk? I would hate to be stuck with it if the taste wasn't for me. Eating Post Op after Gastric Bypass
rubyred138 replied to DimandGirl's topic in Post-op Diets and Questions
I ate loads of SF popsicles mainly to keep myself hydrated, broth, and my protein drinks. I could also eat 1/2 of a yoplait light or 2 table spoons of no sugar added apple sauce but I would only do those two as my breakfast so I could sprinkle my prilosec & biotin onto them. Jello hurt to eat until week 3. i also didnt start drinking milk until week 3. Basically I stuck to broth water popsicles yogurt and applesauce for 2.5 weeks. It got boring so fast! I was so happy when I could start eating food with flavor & texture! -
Post Op care when living alone
lizonaplane replied to Adugal's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
I had my parents come for a week, although they stayed in a nearby hotel because I have a small apartment. They live about 5 hours away. It was great for them to come for emotional support, but honestly, that was about all that was really needed. The surgery center made clear that I was supposed to be doing all of the fixing of food etc. My mom kept saying "let me do that," but I kept reminding her I needed to do it myself. It was good to have them for the laundry (mostly getting smaller clothes out of storage and sheets and towels, but that could have waited another week) and dishes (again, mostly what they were using as I was only eating liquids like protein shakes and yogurt). I was in a lot of pain so it was nice to have them here, but it did make it harder to sleep during the day as my mom can't sit still and kept asking me what else she could do 😐Now that they have left, I have asked a fried to buy me a case of protein drinks (I had one brand I liked) and bring them into my apartment because they are too heavy to lift. If you have a complication, that would be a different issue. Oh, I didn't try stairs until about day 4, but they turned out to be a non-issue. However, sleeping in a bed was hard because it was very hard to get up from lying down due to incision pain (felt like I had done about a million sit ups). I suspect that will be harder than the stairs to your bedroom. If you have a wedge pillow and can sleep on your back, that may be helpful. Other people have suggested recliners, but I don't have one. best of luck! -
Egg salad (you can use plain greek yogurt instead of mayo, its not bad). I made a black bean burger with a tiny side of sweet potato (tolerated that well) Ground Turkey Chili Hummus

The only thing I can't eat even to this day (a year later) is brocolli... It gives me severe gastric distress (think contractions, labor pains..ya that's it).. Didnt have the slightest issue before surgery..very odd... basics for me are: Tuna, Cottage Cheese, Pinto beans,Guacamole, Sour Cream (pair the last 3 and yum-o!) yogurt, steak, chicken, hamburger, I shy away from bread and pasta only because it fills me up too soon and cant eat the good stuff, so i basically eat a Atkins type diet...So far so good!!! Good luck Ya'll

How do you puree your food?
LipstickLady replied to Sleeve Inspired's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I bought a few mini blenders and returned them all. My pureed food stage only lasted a few weeks and I decided that I could live on refried Beans, very soft scrambled eggs, warmed Peanut Butter, hummus, guacamole, cream Soups, yogurt, cream cheese, boxed mashed potatoes and gravy, etc. along with my Protein drinks. After my pureed stage, I knew I would never want mushy food again. -

Just Want To Feel Better
Uniqueladybug replied to Uniqueladybug's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Thank you... I dumped on yogurt in the hospital and am scared to death to try it again. Worst feeling ever! There have been days I haven't gotten any Protein in. My hair is gonna eventually fall out and I'm never gonna feel better. I just wanna cry some days. I've lost a little over 30 pounds but I would rather have my 30 pounds back than feel like this! Food Stuck No Discomfort How Do I Move It
James Marusek replied to harmonyherb's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I have heard that meat tenderizer can help clear up blockages but I have never tried that. Generally I force myself to vomit. According to the internet: The most common meat tenderizer used in India is raw (un-ripened) papaya The leaves, and green skin of raw papaya contain an enzyme called Papain. The connective tissue in the meat breaks down when it comes in contact with Papain. Papaya is preferred tenderizer for red meat (Lamb, Mutton, Goat, Beef). It can be used for fowl. The preferred tenderizer for fowl is Yogurt. Glad you are better. -
Vegetables after weight loss surgery
BLERDgirl replied to Shannon Piper's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
My typical base is either Isopure unflavored whey or on occasion CVS vanilla whey with sunfiber plus half to whole cup of Fage 0% Greek yogurt. I then add fruit, cacao powder or nut butter to taste. I almost always use water to mix and loads of ice. I drink half before my 9am water aerobics class & half after. I end up with 30 - 40 gms of protein before noon. -
All sorts of Crazy questions in one post!
Megdelyn replied to redsohare's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Eating pre-surgery was a lot easier than post surgery. I did not like the liquid broths, I preferred the cubes that dissolve in Water. I could not tolerate the cream soups after surgery, but they were fine before. I also did a lot better with the ready to drink Protein shakes. They are quite portable and taste better. My shopping list: greek yogurt (lots) sf pudding ff cream soups diet v8 splash sf popsicles sf Jello (although I didn't eat much of these) I notice little things about my body, and I'm 4 months out. My tummy looks different although it doesn't look smaller to me. I've lost 50 pounds or so and I'm firmly in a new size. None of my pre clothes fit anymore. People started noticing way before I did. I have taken a picture every month and the first time I saw a difference between my before and after picture was at 3 months. -
protein shake and protein bars vs real food and learning to eat post op
lilac lass replied to lilac lass's topic in WLS Veteran's Forum
Thanks! What you wrote made a lot of sense. I have been trying to have yogurt sometimes instead of the protein bar/ shake. I know it will be a process. I don't want to pick up any new bad habits as I am sorting this out. -
Pureed cauliflower is amazing! I have been using it as a replacement for mashed potatoes for over a year....long before my surgery. It is not a starchy veg, so virtually no carbs. You can add plain greek yogurt and parmesan cheese to add protein to it, plus it will kind of taste like loaded mashed potatoes. Yummy!

1 head of cauliflower, cut into florets Cook the cauliflower in salted water until soft.....20-30 minutes Drain off water, put cauliflower into food processor (sometimes I put half in, then pulse, then add in the rest) Salt and pepper to taste 2 Tbsp butter 1/2 cup plain greek yogurt 1/2 cup grated parmesan cheese Blend in food processor until very smooth Adjust seasoning to your taste

One week post op!
haleymarie replied to haleymarie's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Everyone's different I guess. I believed that too until in hospital they were giving me pudding and yogurt -
Sleeved 4/12/12, just got home from hospital. Before surgery I would only get heartburn like twice a year but water & broth are givin me heartburn. Tomorrow I can go to my protein shakes & yogurt, maybe that won't give me heartburn.

Beauty Queen Weight Loss Skeptic
KellyL replied to Sleevie WonderLand's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
No judgement here because i have the same exact thoughts!!! I am not trying to be critical, it's just like even with Aretha Franklin and Drew Carey. 80-100 lbs, and they just suddenly after yrs and yrs of being big are successful at losing that kind of weight? I am sure by now, Aretha has lost even more, it's been a few months since I first saw her. I watched a talk show with Drew and he said he's going to just say "80" lost, because he lost more but has had a slight regain since his original loss. He talked about changing his eating, watching his carbs, eating things like greek yogurt.. I don't judge them either, and I guess after reading how many people on these forums keep their surgeries a secret, then a celebrity has just as much right to their privacy and they are stalked by the paparazzi so much and judged and critiqued publicly so much, so they probably want to keep their privacy even more than the average joe. And we've all seen how they do people like Carnie Wilson in the media. So it's no wonder!! But I am still very curious about the truth, because of my own journey. I know it's possible with their $ to hire personal trainers and nutritionists and chefs, but it does seem odd that it seems to be happening only in the last yr or so that we are seeing all these celebrity transformations. Regardless of the method, I am very very happy for them despite my suspicion lol. I always love seeing weight loss success. I love watching shows like Extreme Makeover, Weight loss edition, but I have mixed emotions with it. I am excited for the loss they have but I worry on their ability to keep up the exercise routines they have to keep. I do think some kind of exercise is helpful, beneficial, and sometimes vital to our health, regardless our weight. But 4-5 hrs a day?? When they get back to their own lives, no one is making them do this stuff, no one is buying and providing them with their groceries, etc. I worry about their well-being and emotional health and what failing after the show will do to their self esteem if they are unable to maintain. Sometimes I like the show cuz the guy seems to really care, but then sometimes I feel it's no more than a circus/freak show when he makes a big deal on the scales he has to use to weigh them at their starting weight. I know they get trips, exercise machines, cars, groceries bought for them, but can he at least not humiliate them on tv? Can't they do the weighing and just tell what the starting weight is without making them disrobe with all the rolls hanging out and stress they can't use a reg scale. I guess I know how i would feel in the same situation. But I guess they feel it makes good tv and that's why they do it. Anything for good ratings, right? I need to submit this post before i really get to ranting hahahaha -
I was asked an interesting question...
VSGAnn2014 replied to brandon_g's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Unless you develop an eating disorder (see @@miller1109 's post above), it's quite simple. Every few days or every week or so you just eat an extra 100 calories ... until you stop losing. For those who don't track their calories / macronutrients / food using a tool like My Fitness Pal and who don't really know how much they're eating, it can be challenging. But even they can add a handful of nuts to their daily menus or an extra Greek yogurt or some bread at dinner. For me, the challenge in maintenance has been to eat a little more nutritious food and not just over-processed foods. I have so learned to appreciate since I was sleeved which foods are full of nutrition and which are full of ingredients that just make me crave sugary, high-carb, over-processed crap. Slider foods will push all your craving buttons, making you struggle not to regain. -

Calorie count for post-surgery
MizzouGirl replied to Texas Belle's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
For breakfast I typically have a half a cup of 2% cottage cheese with a little natural pineapple juice on it and half a banana. For lunch I have soup or fish with a veggie. For dinner I have fish with a veggie or ricotta bake (recipe on here) with a veggie. So far, my veggie of choice has been oven roasted brussell sprouts tossed in olive oil with a little kosher salt. I roast them until they are fairly mushy. For snacks I have Greek yogurt, cheese and/or a fudgesicle. I also drink 2-3 cups of tea in addition to 40-60 oz of water. I should mention that I refuse to consume artificial sweeteners (my opinion is that they are far worse for you than real sugar but I respect others may disagree) so my yogurt, fudgesicle, etc are higher calorie. I try to keep my carbs under 60 grams. I'm 3 weeks post op and have lost 29 lbs. -
Low carb versus low calorie
SKCUNNINGHAM replied to Jensharley's topic in Post-op Diets and Questions
I am days away from my six month surgiversary. The only carbs I get are from dairy (yogurt and cottage cheese), veggies, fruit (in my smoothies) and the occasional piece of flatbread/cracker or melba toast with cheese. On special occaisions, I may have 1-2 T of rice or mashed potatoes. I also have indulged in fried hushpuppies once in six months (just a couple). I do not eat white carbs (rice, noodles or bread(white or wheat)). Carbs are what I ate mindlessly before - I would anesthesize myself with them. It is better for me to stay away from them. -
HAD TO SHARE! protein milkshake is the best for those who just can't on the shakes
Miss Mac replied to readyforthislifechange's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
One thing I learned early on when I discovered this forum was that the participants could safely hide behind their anonymity, and that opinions and tact will vary. Before I gave up on yo-yo dieting, I would have ice cream every night at bedtime. It is just one of those things that I will probably never approach again because of instant downfall. What I ended up doing was blending ricotta cheese and Greek vanilla yogurt with some artificial sweetener and use that as a base for my Protein shakes. However, there are those among us whose nutritionists advise against use of any artificial sweetener....so what are we to do? I just follow the plan I was given and use others' suggestions here as inspiration for modifying their recipes to fit my plan. Some use almond milk. My NUT wants me to use real dairy milk. She also does not want me to have a shake every day, but I would if I there were no restriction. It's an easy energy source for me. My suggestion is to follow your plan and not get too bent out of shape if someone else's plan is different. -
Allow me to disagree. You can't expect somebody who's just had surgery to have 80-100gr a Protein daily. That's just not possible. I am three days out and my new stomac can't handle more than 3 table spoons of yogurt at a time if not less. We all do it at our own pase, as are all different. Weight loss is not a race and we all do it differently. My surgeon in fact dos expect it. He said there was no physical reason someone couldn't drink 3 Premier Protein drinks in one day (33 oz of fluid/90 grams of protein) and expected us to do it. It can be done. It may take all day, but it can be done. This is in US. In uk is more about real food. Not Protein powder.
