August surgery buddies!
jenuinelygenuinely replied to Connie88's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I cleared out all JUNK from my kitchen and fridge! I gave them all to my mom since her house is like a "community house" where all the kids get dropped off for grandma and grandpa to babysit lol. Going to Costco Business Center after my pre-op appointment on Tuesday! Super excited to see what they have, I remember the last time I went there were a lot of protein drinks and other non-sugar options. -
Hi DreamBelieveAchieve How are you doing? I was resleeve for the same reason. I had xray from the first time to prove that they did not take out the top of the stomach. I am losing so slow thus time. I am 11 weeks. I am exercising daily so I do think I gained muscle. I think I need to pick up cardio. I am swimming and riding my bike but I have slowly gain strength to ride futher. My shortness of breath has dismissed since I am exercising daily. My BP is in normal limits. I have lost more inches than weight. I still have issues with carbs. I don't eat pasta, bread, rice ect. I do like oatmeal or cream of wheat. I don't get very hungry now. Having issues getting my fluids in but my protein is around 60 to 80 daily. Any suggestions to increase weight loss.

Wow! 8 lbs! I’ve actually gained 2 lbs 🙄 and I’m not sure why considering I’m following instructions for my pre-op! Very frustrating! Maybe my body is just fighting to hold on to weight since I feel like I’m starving. I still hate drinking Protein Shakes and eating yogurt since I don’t know how I’m supposed to lose weight doing that. 🤷🏼♀️ If they would just let me eat natural, non-processed, non-artificially sweetened Proteins like egg whites, chicken, ham, etc.. then I know my weight would begin to drop some. Maybe I’ll just call my dietitian on Monday….

Surgery Date 7/27/22, New Life in Progress!
SurfingMama posted a topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Hey Y'all! Brand new to Bariatric Pal, and three days post op! I am already down 30.3 pounds since starting the pre op diet, which is super encouraging! Yesterday was probably the hardest pain wise after waking up in terrible pain, on top of acid reflux from hell! Thankfully, got on some antacids prescribed by doctor, and the pain meds helped with the pain immensely! Most of my pain isn't actually from my stomach, but from my biggest incision by my liver. Also trying to stay hydrated, which has been so much harder than I ever thought! So, I actually got the VSG for two completely different reasons. The first is the obvious, to lose weight and get back to a healthier lifestyle! The second... three weeks ago, I was told that I have precancerous and cancerous cells in my stomach. After talking through all of my options with my gastro doctor, my best move was to get the VSG as the cancer cells would be completely eradicated as they were in the portion of my stomach getting removed. Honestly, I had already been researching VSG anyways, so this was kinda a no brainer for me, two for one! This did move up my surgery date from mid September to this past Wednesday, and I am honestly completely okay with that! I didn't want to go through any sort of chemo or radiation, so time was a bit of the essence. Anyone else get/is going to get the VSG for medical reasons beyond weightloss/morbid obesity? Hi Mel, I have read your post a couple of times and although I don't have experience to share, because I'm still in my initial weight loss phase, I wanted to thank you for telling us how you are - It's really helpful to read about how people do in the long term. You're right - 15lbs doesn't sound a lot at all because I presume you lost a stack of weight in 2016, but I totally get that you're not happy with that - I don't think I would be. The best thing is that not only have you called it at this point, you've come here where you will get loads of support and people with the same experience to help you! AND you've identified that it's your life stresses that are triggering it, so that's the first step to getting it sorted. I've seen people here who regained and who did various things to try to lose again. Would it be possible to get some help with your life issues first because then the eating might be easier to tackle, rather than being another issue to beat yourself up about? Then could you go right back to your post-op diet for a while? Empty the house of all those 'punishment' foods and fill it up with protein-based snacks. I absolutely love deli meats - chicken or turkey or pastrami slices that are easy to grab when you're grazing, tins of tuna you can make into a salad really quickly and that will fill you up nice and quickly. High protein yoghurt, etc. Start drinking more water if that has slipped. Finally it sounds like you really need to find another gym - could you do that? Or as the others say, a home exercise regime? That has a double benefit in that it should lift your mood a bit too. Do you have family or friends who you can talk to and who can support you? I don't mean nag, only you can decide it's time to switch things around again, but just to be there for you as you do it? I know when you aren't feeling good it can seem impossible to change things, and it's easy for some random stranger on the internet to try to fix things 'for you'. It's not like that here though - people will all identify with your current position, lots have been there and lots of us will be in the future. It would be brilliant if you could let us know how you do. Maybe do just one thing differently this week and see how that goes. All the very very best. 15lbs will be hard but it's totally doable isn't it? Your sleeve is still there and it will help you. So will we. xx

Question on hair loss
Arabesque replied to Candigrl1's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
It usually starts around the 3rd or 4th month & last about 3 months or so. When you start, how long it will last & how much you lose is an individual thing so you may be more or less the usual which is ok of course. You’ll start to notice an increase in the amount of hair you shed like when you wash or brush your hair. Remember this is just an acceleration of your natural hair shedding cycle. The hair you are losing is hair you would be losing. It’s just happening faster for a short time. Your still have new hair growing but just at it’s usual rate. Keep meeting your protein goals & taking your vitamins. Don’t stress about it - stress makes everything worse. It will pass. -
Absolutely will help with the amount of food you eat should you night binge! 😂 The temptation will still come because you have to retrain your brain but it will get easier. You have to keep those foods out of the house though for awhile until you build up good willpower once you get released for regular foods. I have the same issue too! My stomach seems to go crazy at night for some reason. Usually I choose a protein shake or tea. I do sometimes give in though but not much.

Welcome Steve!! I am also a Northern Cali resident. Don't be too scared of the pre-op diet. First few days are rough, not gonna lie, but it does get easier. I ended up doing it twice because my surgery was cancelled the day before it was scheduled (wah wah) Not knowing what your pre-op diet consists of, it's hard to give detailed advice. Mine was three protein shakes, 4oz of chicken and some veggies. I actually started looking forward to the shakes! It was worth it though because my surgeon said my liver looked good and made the surgery easier. Good luck!! You'll do great!

Kudos to you for sticking with your pre-op diet! I understand how difficult it is to stay strong and I feel the same way you do about wanting to eat something different. I’m so sick of protein shakes and yogurt I could cry! And I have one week to go. We can do this!!!😁

Exercise - Who even am I???
blackcatsandbaddecisions replied to lizonaplane's topic in Fitness & Exercise
I run and do my spin classes in the middle of the day, before lunch. So I go home from work, (live super close), get changed and run for 20 minutes then do a spin class for 20 minutes. I have a latte and coffee prior to my workout, have my protein shake and cheese afterwards. For me I am always hungry in the evenings, the morning and afternoon are kind of a non event for me. I usually take one rest day from exercise a week, I don’t normally Notice a change in hunger levels that day. -

I apologize for this because I know it’s been talked about a million times. BUT seriously I am at my wits end. I am 9 weeks out from RNY and just stuck. I lost 25 prior to surgery, 27.9 since surgery now under 200 @ 197.6. The scale won’t move. I am not breaking the rules, I am getting 60-80 grams of Protein a day, drinking 80 or more oz of Water per day. Carbs hanging in between 30-70. I’m killing it at the gym. I CrossFit 3-4 times a week and walk several miles on my off days. I reached out to my team and she planned for a call next week. She did mention maybe I wasn’t getting enough carbs, maybe needing like 100-150 on CrossFit days! Any experience with this? Seems like a lot and I’ve always been sensitive to carbs so I’m hesitant to try. However if I need that to get back to burning I’ll do it. Calories are never over 800-900 a day. Usually hang in the 700 range. Any advice from a CrossFitter or anyone who has been through this is much appreciated

I ordered a pack of the 2 ounce plastic cups with lids from Amazon so I can prep food in small portions to keep in my fridge. I also picked up a small (tiny!) food processor at Target so when I get to the puréed stage I can make different kinds of food (tuna, chicken, eggs, etc..) I got a new, small battery-operated food scale and a small hand-held strainer for soups (to take the chunks out) both from Amazon. Oh, and a tiny glass measuring cup that measures in small increments (ounces.) I found that at my grocery store. Food wise, I have Swanson sipping bone broth (chicken and beef) and Better than Bullion in chicken, beef, and vegetable - that’s all the food right now other than Premier Protein shakes. I’ve watched loads of YouTube videos about post surgery food preps so I feel pretty good with what I have so far. I hear some people pick up unflavored Pedialyte to mix with water, etc… to keep electrolytes up. 😁🤞🏻🤞🏻🤞🏻

6 Year Post-Op Need Support
Sleeve_Me_Alone replied to Mel G's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I'm so sorry you're struggling, but you are absolutely not alone. We all pass through seasons of difficulty, deal with emotional upheaval, slip into old habits, face regain, etc. It sounds like you've identified it and are actively getting help, so be proud of yourself for taking those first steps! Maybe focus on ONE habit you can re-establish to help get your back into alignment with your goals? Are you getting your water in everyday? How about your vitamins? Do you regularly hit your protein goal? Again, you don't need to do ALL of these things, pick just ONE and work on making it a habit. Then once your feel like you've got that under your belt, pick another one. Small changes add up! You've got this! -
Non dairy protein shakes
summerset replied to Michelle1.0's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
There are lots of plant based protein powders available. I use the 4k or 8k from ProFuel (the "original" I don't like) and Alphafoods, sometimes nutri+. If possible try to order sample packs before buying a whole tub because taste and consistency vary big time, even when it comes to the same brand. -
Does anyone have any non dairy protein shakes they suggest? Or meal replacements

I'm 3 days out post op and I'm feeling better still have that strange feeling when I drink and sometimes when I move. Sleeping on my side has a very strange feeling now. I'm going to try a protein shake today ok'd by my surgeon. My punctures where the tools went in still are still very tender but I'm getting there. I have not stepped on the scale as of yet...my stomach is still bloated

Thank you SO MUCH for the information on the protgold protein!!!! I'm 5 weeks post-op and so sick of protein shakes. I went on and ordered the berry flavor bottle with 1 oz servings. -
I chose to only discuss with my husband and healthcare providers. I'm so happy with my decision to have the procedure and have no shame, regret or embarrassment. However, I know from a wealth of experience that outside of my husband, the remainder of my family is the opposite of me - extroverted, telling everyone their own business plus everyone else's - including mine. My wanting control of the situation is what it really boiled down to. It would have became everyone's business (picture multiple church phone trees activated simultaneously) if I had let a peep of it out. Also, a pet peeve of mine that my extended family makes a habit of is using "you've lost weight" as their go to complement or conversation starter whether it's true or not. I've been working over the years to help them see these comments can be hurtful and we're making progress finally. If they knew I had the procedure I suspect it would return to free range season on comments about mine and everybody's else's body - not OK. On an aside, I also did not tell my children. My husband did not agree with this out of the rare chance that the "worst" might happen (spoiler alert - it didn't). Ultimately, I didn't want to put the pressure of not discussing it outside of our nuclear family on them or the worry during the procedure. They are old enough to be left alone for a few hours and we do not have babysitting options, I couldn't bear the thought of them alone at home worrying. So, I had a "business trip" earlier this month. They have asked questions about why I'm eating so little and I just tell them I'm trying to get healthier so my portions are smaller.

Fairlife they have 30 grams of protein and they have another one that has 42 grams and they both taste very good

I just had my surgery on 7/25, currently 3 days out. I’m reading comments about the 2 week diet and it really wasn’t bad. I used to drink way too much Diet Coke everyday and stopped cold turkey for the diet. The protein shakes, protein bars, and small dinner were enough to keep me satisfied (for the most part). Each day I’ve been home has gotten much better. 3 days out and I’m not as sore and have been finally able to drink an entire protein shake. I haven’t had any appetite at all. If your feeling nervous that is understandable. I thought of cancelling mine too but then realized I’d come to far to back out.

One week until go-time. Having my gastric sleeve surgery on 8/4. One week into my pre-op diet. Hasn’t been as rough as I thought it would be. More mental hunger than physical hunger(thankfully the protein shakes are doing a decent job of keeping my hunger at bay). Energy levels are certainly not where they usually are. But it’s all for a good cause. I appreciate hearing everyone’s stories of how they are navigating this adventure we are all on. It’s reassuring to hear that the struggle is real, and not just in my head, and that a lot of people are finding success on the “other side”. Good luck to one and all!

Hi July friends! Well, I’m two weeks and a day out from surgery today. Everything is fantastic so far. Just some very mild ache in the healing incision area when I first get up in the morning. I don’t know how much weight I’ve lost but my clothes are far more comfortable. I’ll weigh myself next week because they’ll ask at my next appointment but I’m trying to focus on being healthy and strong which works best for my personal mental health. Every food I have tried so far I have tolerated just fine. I just progressed to “mechanical” food which sounds very space-age but really is just anything you don’t have to cut with a knife. I’m going to try some fish this weekend. Chicken was just fine (I chewed it well) and cooked vegetables. Also scrambled egg and egg salad and egg foo yong made with minced chicken. A lot of eggs. For now I am not being very adventurous as I’m finishing off all the food I cooked and prepped for the soft stage. I am still drinking one shake a day to get to 80-90g protein. I can’t do it without the shake or I’d be eating all day. Hope you are all having a wonderful day and sending good healing thoughts to the folks who had/are having surgery this week. Cay

Hey There! Any December 2021 Surgery Friends?
LuckyCat replied to armartin98's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Hey, y'all! I'm down about 75 lbs from my highest weight (around Thanksgiving), and down about 60 lbs from my surgery weight on December 2nd. That puts me at the halfway point toward my realistic goal (i.e., not the "medically ideal" weight of 115, which I haven't seen since, like, 5th grade, lol). The weight is coming off a little slower than I'd prefer, but the non-scale victories are undeniable. My A1C dropped from 8.8 to 6.4, and I expect it to continue improving. I flew to NYC in May and was reasonably comfortable in a coach seat — no seat belt extender necessary! Plus, I walked all over the city for days, and found myself energized, not exhausted. I think best of all, I'm actually enjoying exercise for the first time in my life. It feels like a pleasure, not a punishment. I'm doing everything from the step machine to (tragically slow) jogging, yoga to Beat Saber on the Oculus. Just last October, I was too out of shape to take my kids trick-or-treating, and had to sit down on the curb to keep from hyperventilating. So, the change is dramatic! I do have more hunger than I would have anticipated. I can easily eat 2,000 kcal a day if I don't police it. I can eat only small quantities at a time, of course, but find myself ravenously hungry an hour later. I try to focus on protein and healthy fats, which helps. Also, food in general feels less like an emotional coping mechanism than just fuel to keep me going; it's less thrilling than it used to be, which is refreshing. For me at least, bypass is a good tool, but still involves willpower and intent — which I can live with. So glad to hear from y'all, and to know you're here.
