    High Abdobmen Fat

My weight is mostly carried in my belly and I'm definitely planning on a tummy tuck... in fact, I've already started saving for it and I don't even have my bypass surgery until April 20, 2021. Hopefully... maybe 2 years post-op if all goes well...

    PCOS and sleeve success?

I have PCOS also and from my understanding of what I read. It says that gastric bypass is better, but ultimately you have to get the surgery u feel is better for you. I switched from sleeve to bypass as a result. But I feel like bypass will be more beneficial to me as my main decider.
  3. if you have issues with acid reflux, they usually recommend you go with bypass. Sleeve makes that worse (or can cause it) in about 30% of patients. Otherwise, it's personal preference. I had GERD prior to surgery, so it was a no brainer for me. 30% isn't everyone, but it was enough of a risk for me that I didn't want to take the chance. GERD is awful. RNY "dumping" is also a 30% risk. I've never dumped and know lots of others who never have, but it does happen to about 30% of RNY patients. But it can be controlled by limiting or avoiding sugar. Some dumpers can eat SOME sugar without setting it off - others have to avoid it altogether. there's a better chance of putting diabetes into remission with bypass, although it can go into remission with sleeve as well - but the percentage isn't as high. also, statistically people lose a little more weight with bypass because of the malabsorption, but that's just a statistic. Your success is really more dependent on your level of commitment and following the rules rather than which surgery you go with. You'll find lots of examples on here of people who've been very successful regardless of which surgery they had. P.S. I've been super happy with my bypass and would choose it again if I had to make that decision today.
  4. If sugar is a huge problem for you, consider bypass. Sleeve people generally tolerate sugar more, and if it's your particular addiction, bypass can do more to put that fire out because it can have more physical consequences for overindulging in sugar. Not to say you can't "dump" to some degree with a sleeve, but it doesn't seem to compare to bypass. I can eat about 200 calories of refined sugary stuff with no issues, but will feel pretty gross if I go over that. But not like a bypass where you get severely ill and sweaty and feel god awful. (on the other hand, if you WANT to be able to eat small portions of sugary stuff someday and don't want more severe limitations on sugar...sleeve might be better) If you have a personal or family history of anemia or iron deficiency, sleeve might be a better choice. It is less corelated with nutrient absorption issues than bypass. Acid reflux is more of a risk with sleeve, but I feel like this could have something to do with the skill of the surgeon. I had a hiatal hernia repair with my sleeve that actually corrected my acid reflux completely. I think this is due to my surgeon being truly excellent and up to date on good technique for preventing these issues. But yes, statistically, sleeve carries significantly more risk for acid reflux issues...and they are no fun. Best wishes whatever you decide!

    Anyone getting sleeved 3/22?

GM Everyone! I’m scheduled for bypass this morning at 9 and I’m super nervous as this is my 2nd time around...my sleeve in 2018 wasn’t successful. I’m wishing you all a speedy and safe surgery and recovery! I’m looking forward to OUR progress this year! ☺️
  6. So, I am almost 2 weeks out. My sleeve never healed correctly, and my surgeon reccomended revision to rny. I was like you. Sleeve, no problem, I can still eat, just less, but rny terrified me because of dumping. Recovery has been harder for me with this, but, weigh in last Friday, I was told to move ahead to purees, because I've lost so much already. It's getting easier everyday. I know I will be thankful I did this. I'm right ahead of you, so message me if you need any support. You've got this!
  7. I'm opting for the sleeve for the same reason + less issues with vitamin absorption, apparently. I think people sometimes opt for bypass if they have GERD and also because you usually lose slightly more weight.
  8. Hi all, I'm new here and have found this forum to be so very helpful! I had my initial consultation last week and the surgeon said I meet criteria for either the gastric sleeve or the bypass. Assuming I am medically cleared, I am leaning towards the sleeve since it seems a little less invasive. Although, I'm not really sure if I am taking all of the right factors into consideration. Any recommendations on other things I should take into account? (I have a BMI of 46 and am a type 2 diabetic). Greatly appreciate any suggestions! Sent from my SM-G975U using BariatricPal mobile app

  10. I had gastric bypass this Wednesday. It’s been interesting few days. Can anyone help describe how you know when you are full? also, has anyone felt more light headed A LOT when walking? I look forward to corresponding with others on this any other topics.
  11. Just wanted to see if there were any TN, well East TN, peeps going through all of this recently?? Sent from my SM-G975U using BariatricPal mobile app
  12. Just curious as to what everyone who had the surgery in January are eating now a days? I need some ideas on what to eat as I'm getting bored but also not sure what to eat anymore. Sent from my SM-G981U using BariatricPal mobile app
  13. I started this process in October 2020 and I just got scheduled for surgery April 20, 2021. Woo-hoo! EDIT: Just found an April 2021 surgery group was already started in the Gastric Bypass forum. 🙂 No way to delete this post?
  14. Hi guys! Well it's been quite a journey through this but I've got my date.... April 28th [emoji3060][emoji119][emoji3060][emoji119] I'm so excited and really nervous at the same time. I'm a little nervous about the pain. I'm a pretty tough gal but for some reason I'm nervous. Of course beauty is pain for us ladies lol. Any advice on what the hospital stay is like and coming home?? I've made so many lists of what to take to the hospital and prepare for coming home. My Amazon cart is ridiculously full , but I'm extremely hopeful and positive. And so grateful for this it's like I'm getting a second chance or a do over. I really feel this is going to be the best thing I could ever do for myself. So any advice would awesome!! 15. Hey everyone! I'm back on here, looking for motivation and advice. Long story short, I've just had my first surgery following my final cancer treatment and the biopsy came back all clear! Looks like I beat the odds and tackled esophageal cancer in 16 months. I did not go through chemo, therefore the stress of the situation drove me back into bad eating habits and I put on 30 pounds. I'm 4 years and 3 months post-bypass. I've maintained at 200 pounds (down from 369 at my biggest) and was very proud of myself until recently. I have packed this weight on over the last 4 months. Winter. Holidays. Cancer. COVID. It all conspired to make for a rough patch, but I'm on the other side of the mountain now and determined to get back down to 200 which is where I'm happy and looking healthy. Thoughts? Advice? Words of encouragement?
  16. Sounds like we had almost the same thought process. I’m going with bypass too (surgery tomorrow). I think we made the right choice!
  17. Alot of folks already said more or less the same thing, but I'll throw in my 2 cents anyway: I chose sleeve because: I was afraid of dumping (but...I dump anyway) I wanted to continue using NSAIDs (but...I ended up not needing them anymore anyway) I was personally freaked out a bit by the re-routing of my intestines (but...not cutting out my stomach? lol) I DID NOT have GERD. I only had a choice between sleeve and bypass cuz those were the only ones covered by my insurance, so I didn't consider any other procedure. I think that one's results with WLS has more to do with the person, than with the type of surgery. I'm convinced I would have had the same result if I had the bypass. But that's just me. Some background and current statuses: I'm 5'2", almost 50yr old female, started off at 235 lbs at the beginning of my 2 week pre-op diet...2.5 years ago. I got to goal of 127 lbs in 7 months (108 lbs lost at that time). I settled into 115 lbs by 10 months post-op and stayed there basically since...but not without a bit of effort on my part. 3 times I got up to 120 lbs for a few consecutive days, and subsequently made efforts to get back down to 115. And 4-5 times I went sub-110 lbs for a few consecutive days, but didn't have to make any effort at all to get back to 115, go figure. This morning I was 109.2 lbs. I consumed very little calories during weight loss phase, and exercised regularly starting month 3 (running/walking mostly, and minimal strength training daily). No complications, nor issues other than those expected (dump with sugar, foamies/chest pressure if I eat too much or too fast, need to barf if I drink with my meals, burp like a teenage boy) At 2.5 years out, up until a month ago, I was averaging around 1800 cals a day with regular exercise (running & strength training 4-5 times a week). Currently I'm playing around with calories as I'm sidelined on the exercise front, which explains my lower weight these days cuz I haven't figured it out yet. I mostly eat salads (by choice, I LOOOVE salads!) , but I also eat desserts, spicy stuff, fried stuff, fatty stuff, drink coffee, alcohol and carbonated water. On rare occasions I eat bread or potatoes, but I don't eat rice nor regular pasta. I max out at about 1 to 1.5 cups of food per sitting (more if its salad) My lab results have consistently been uneventful (my last one was in November last year). So....so far so good. I have no illusions that I will be like this forever...but that's on me, not my sleeve.
  18. I converted from VSG to RYGB in October 2020. Recovery was similar, yet different. I had a lot of vomiting following VSG, but less with the bypass. I am one of the 30% who experience dumping, but as catwoman7 explained, it is totally controllable by watching what I eat. In fact, I'm almost 5 months post-op and even the dumping appears to have improved (or I've figured out the triggers!). I can tell you that I don't get that immediate sense of restriction like I did with the sleeve. At this point in my recovery, my body seems to know when to stop eating before I get the pain and discomfort associated with overeating. All I can really offer is my advise based upon my outcome. I am so happy that I had the surgery. Like you, I has the surgery to correct my stomach and esophagus issues. But I've lost 47 pounds, I feel great, I can sleep through the night without acid reflux and I look and feel 10 years younger. Don't let fear of surgery and complications limit your decision to improve your health and daily living.

Making the surgery choice, which one?

I don't think there's a difference between the amount of food sleeve patients can eat vs. bypass patients. I have no problem with dinners out. The first few months you're not taking in very much food regardless of which surgery you have - but after that, your volume becomes more "normal". I eat about the same amount as my "light eating" never-been-obese women friends do - no one would be able to tell I had surgery at this point (and wouldn't have been able to tell for a long time - after the first few months, anyway). I've eaten dinners out hundreds of time since surgery. Also, you need to take supplements with VSG, too. Our clinic has both types of patients on the exact same vitamin regimen. Some clinics have the VSG patients taking fewer vitamins, but they still have to take them.
  20. Hi, I have just stumbled across this forum and thank god I did as I am hoping to get some help. I has a the Sleeve surgery in 2009 and then had a SADI or SIPS Bypass ( I think that is the technical term for it) in June 2017. I am in Australia and they were just starting to use the SADI option so didn't have a huge amount of feedback available. After having the sleeve surgery done I was diagnosed with an auto immune condition Lupus (obviously not from the surgery). So after years of pred/steroids to treat my condition I had started putting weight back on so had the bypass done. When I had the surgery, everything went ok with that part, however from them moving my Pancreas I ended up with acute Pancreatitis and was stuck in hospital for almost a month. Anyhow fast forward to 2018 when I would consider myself completely healed from the surgery, I started having a lot of gastric symptoms like bloating, excessive gas, sometimes diarrhea sometimes constipation that would come and go. I put it down to everything just getting used to the surgery. However, the past 18 months or more the symptoms have become progressively worse and after having all types of scans, faecal samples done, this test and that test and trying different treatments and diets I have finally had it with all the doctors as the cant give me an answer and now just put it down to my Lupus! The last "diagnosis" from different GI's was Chronic Pancreatitis (which my Lupus specialist says its not) and SIBO. But after changing to different diets and trying courses of antibiotics etc there is still no pattern and still no answers! I AM MISERABLE! I live each day in chronic pain but to add this to my health problems has been devastating to my mental health. I have basically become a recluse (I just turned 40) because if my Lupus isn't playing up I still cant leave the house because of these ongoing Gastro issues and I am so over it. Bellow are all the symptoms i have, some at different time depending on how bad it is and there is no pattern as to when it comes and goes or how long it lasts. I was wondering if anyone that has had SADI surgery experienced anything like this and if so were you able to fix it? Diarrhoea Constipation Excessive foul smelling Flatulence Severe Bloating (I can wake up with a flattish tummy and by late afternoon it looks like I am 8 months pregnant and my tummy is rock hard) Abdominal discomfort Pale coloured stools Steatorrhea Foul smelling stools Nausea weight fluctuation Malabsorption So that is most of what I can think of right now, but I am really hoping I can find some answers as I am just existing not living Thanks....desperate poster
  21. Greetings to everyone, On May 2, 2016, I received my VSG from my Bariatric Surgeon. Fast forward to February 2019, I start getting experiencing abdominal pain, nausea and vomiting that my general GI specialist couldn’t figure out what was wrong with me. Diagnostic testing revealed a raw sore in my esophagus, a hiatal hernia, and the medical professionals couldn’t diagnose why I was experiencing abdominal pain in my gut. As time moved on, my aforementioned symptoms got worse and worse where I couldn’t keep down my food and medications. Now jump to March 10, 2021, I have my first surgical consultation with the Bariatric Surgeon that had put in my VSG in 2016. My Bariatric Surgeon recommended a revision from the VSG to RYGB to fix my hiatal hernia and the rest of my digestive symptoms. Dr. Chen has fast tracked my RYGB surgery to Monday, March 22, 2021. I have to admit to everyone that in 2016 when I the VSG, I was fine with it. However, now with the RYGB surgery within 48 hours of this posting in the BariatricPal forum, I’m getting nervous to having this surgery. One of the main reasons why I’m nervous is about having the RYGB surgery is the possibility of complications and after having surgery, and the dumping syndrome that seems to be common with a lot of individuals who get the RYGB surgery. Fortunately for me, while I was recovering from the VSG, I was not subjected to dumping syndrome. Can anybody share with me about your own experiences with getting the RYGB surgery? How was your recovery period? How was it going from a clear liquid diet to a full liquid diet to purée foods, etc. Share your thoughts and feedback. I would greatly appreciate that very much.

    Revision

Revision is such an interesting topic! I'm hoping I can get the rest of my weight off on my own, but my Surgeon and Endo are talking about some sort of revision that might help my reactive hypoglycemia. I hope everyone does well with their revision and appointments! I would also love to hear how everyone is doing after!
  23. I was reading an old posts regarding calorie requirements after gastric bypass. I am five weeks post op and can eat 800 calories a day. I get 100 grams of protein and all my water in. My carbs are staying at 20 or less. My weight loss feels slow although overall I’m not really sure it is. Maybe my expectations are right. I started at 257 day of surgery and five weeks out i have lost 22 lbs. I haven’t always followed the diet above. Early on I ate much more carbs but last week upped my protein and cut my carbs. Fats also increased of course and this caused some increase in calories. The past post I read were encouraging people to eat more calories and even to get up to 1000 as soon as possible and stay low carb and weight would come off. People also encouraged it bc it helps your metabolism they said which helps with the weight loss. But I am still afraid my calories are too high and feel weird bc I can eat much more than the two tablespoons my nurse told me I should be eating at means. But if I ate like she said I’d definitely take in way less that 800 calories a day. also thought 320 of my calories are still from protein shakes. So like around 500 calories is food. What are thoughts around this?
  24. I had the sleeve in 2017, and revised to bypass in December 2020 due to GERD and weight regain. Since the bypass in December I have lost 25kg (55 lbs). - current weight 187 lb. Weight loss for me now seems to be slower then the first time around, however I am ok with that. Since my revision I also have had NO more symptoms of GERD. Am so happy I was able to ge this revision, weight is steadily coming off. Hope this helps a bit
