Nexium, Prilosec.....Causes Kidney Disease!
janedoe92 replied to 10stackzz's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I don't see how this can be creepy? For some removal of body parts is needed for a healthy life, or better way of living. I for one will have to have my gallbladder taken out sooner or later due to gallstones and find no problem with it because I won't have to suffer from the pain it causes. As for acid reflux OP I would hope your surgeon explains that to you (mine did in great detail even made me sign a paper noting 90 things that can go wrong but there are more). For me IMO I've had reflux for awhile preop because of a hiatial hernia and there were foods that triggered it. After having surgery (I got DS but the sleeve is part of that) I was put on ppi's because it's common for you to have acid reflux. If I were to experience it long term I'd then turn to natural remedies, but I'm prepared for that. I think mentally you must put yourself in a place of wanting to be healthy with POSSIBLE complications (and the percentage that this happens to is soooo extremely small) or not dealing with that chance and taking the inevitable chance of health problems due to being overweight/obese. I would say it is important to see both pros and cons and get as much info, but ultimately it's up to you, and what you can live with in the end. I wish you the best of luck OP! -
Nexium, Prilosec.....Causes Kidney Disease!
AnneElliot replied to 10stackzz's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
@hopekate I pray that you take this very seriously. I have spoken to several ppl that never had GERD pre op and had it so badly post op post op that they needed a revision. With revision your at a much much higher risk for complications. Some ppl, their GERD improve immediately postop but in 3 or 6 years it comes back with vegenence! Think of reversible procedures like the Gastric Ballon and Lapband. You will lose the weight and be in a position to have the Nissan procedure. A small hatial hernia does not cause the significant issues your facing. The nurses and surgeon won't live in your body! There's a lot a lot of research that says the sleeve is creates a high pressure system that leads to acid reflux. I worry that you're getting bad advice. I can't believe your surgeon is suggesting a procedure that could be revised! Sorry for the rant. I was tested for acid reflux pre op. My surgeon refuses to do this procedure with anyone with acid reflux! -
Just revised from Sleeve to MGB
NuHorizons replied to NuHorizons's topic in Mini Gastric Bypass Surgery Forum
Hi I chose Dr Ponce de leon due to his expertise. Many doctors including Dr. Illan have trained under Dr Ponce. He's very skilled and he's stays on top of the latest technology and techniques by attending conferences. Him and a few other Doctors were chosen to work with Dr Robert Rutledge(the creator of MGB) during a live Mini Gastric Bypass operation this past Dec 2016. That says a lot about his character and his expertise. I chose the MGB over the RNY due to the complications of RNY, plus I've known many people who have been hospitalized for various reasons after getting the RNY. It's considered the Gold Standard in the USA, but Doctors abroad are performing the MGB and sleeve more than RNY. Other countries are very receptive to the MGB. The only complications that I have been able to find were low Iron and occasionally bile relux in less than 1% of surveyed patients. The bile reflux can be prevented during surgery with the Carbajo Stitch technique. Only skilled surgeons know about is technique. There are surgeons performing the MGB in Mexico, but I wouldn't let just anyone operate on me, especially those who didn't bother to attend the MGB Conference in Tijuana this past December 2016. Every Surgeon who does MGB should have been there to learn the proper technique. I hope this helps. -
Is it as daunting as it sounds?
pixiechick replied to walklady's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'm 10 weeks post op, I have struggled with the protein powder and getting enough liquids. And I did try 100 diets and excersise. But your body gets stuck at a set point. Know that if you take this risk you may have complications or you may lose a lot of weight and feel healthy!! Doesn't mean you'll be happy that's a whole other issue and def connected with our relationship to food. Either way it's a personal decision, and good or bad never be ashamed of a decision to take a chance on life!! Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App -
Hey there!! Back with an update!Yay!! I just got back to my hotel and my surgery was done yesterday (2/10/17). I was a little surprised by how quickly everything went. I mean super duper quickly! But I did have a few complications as I have been cursed with hard to locate and even harder to hit veins. The anesthesiologist had to put my iv lines in. The shuttle take you in at 6:15am and you're in the waiting room with final paperwork stuff and final payment. They call you in to finalize your dietary plan and also do the EKG...then you wait until your room is ready. When you go to your suite, you quickly change in your gown and then the phlebotomist comes in to give you a little Xanax and does your IV. The surgeon comes in and chats with you for a moment and then it's show time. The procedure took less than 45 minutes and he not only staples but he also does a reenforced suture over the staple line to prevent additional complications. Past that, walking around after surgery went pretty smoothly and I still have "rolling" gas bubbles which are annoying beyond belief! Before they release you from the hospital, they have you do a tiny barium swallow to make sure your tract is completely clear and then you're released to go back to the hotel!! You have to keep walking...the more you walk, the faster the rolling bubbles will be relieved. I've got a final follow up on Monday and head back over the border by about noon that same day. Feeling pretty good (past those bubbles) and have no regrets whatsoever. The only major things I will also add: If you buy your meds that are prescribed there at [/url]OCC, it's about $190 with a credit card. If you ask the hotel shuttle driver, he can take you to a local pharmacy that will sell you all the drugs for about $70 bucks. Bring or buy a pill crusher. (There's a Walmart near the hotel or if you go to an offsite pharmacy...or pack one with you. I have the vitaleph shakes, but I also bought unjury Protein powder (online only) the chicken broth and the unflavored variety...to break up the chocolate/vanilla shakes...you will get tired of those flavors quick. The unflavored powder can be mixed with juices or just water! That's it!! Sorry for the novel!! But you're going to do great!!

There are plenty of complications stories on this board. It is important to read them to know what can happen. But, it is also good to look at the statistics to see how OFTEN those complications happen. Message boards may not be a representative sample of the entire population Sent from my SM-N920R4 using BariatricPal mobile app

Also no experience but it shows that even when perfect, complications can happen, so sorry they happened to you, hang in there and hopefully the healing will be quick Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

Is it as daunting as it sounds?
NWJill replied to walklady's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
It is hard to know from reading individual experiences what your experience will be. I can't relate to AnneElliot because I do not have the side effects she is dealing with. I have no acid reflux, I am easily able to get in my fluids and I don't spend hours and days eating, planing and tracking food because I created meal ideas and options before my surgery and now I just pick one of my pre-planned weeks and make it work. HurricaneU asked what I struggle with most at 6 weeks post op and for me it is not drinking when or within 30 min of eating. Sometimes it feels like food gets stuck and I need a sip of fluid to wash it down and so I drink but then I get full and can't finish my food. Now here is another opinion as to why I picked sleeve surgery instead of others 1. I know 4 people who have had bypass and the dumping syndrome and complications from that have been awful. One person I know died due to complications, now that was 10 years ago and I hope we know more now but it is still scary stuff 2. I also know 2 people who had lap band and again infections and complications made that journey difficult. I have lymphedema and infection was a major risk factor on any choice I made, even the sleeve. One major factor for me was feeling hungry, the sleeve helps with that I believe more than the other surgeries. I did not want a surgery that so dramatically altered my ability to absorb nutrients like bypass. My surgeon won't do any surgery except bypass or sleeve anymore due to complications and I trusted him. The reality is that this surgery is life altering and not something for anyone to take lightly. It can have complications that effect your life. You have to be ready to have a completely different relationship with food. I lost 80 pounds on my own pre-op and another 20 pounds since and I feel more in control since surgery. I don't crave the types or quantity of food I had before. At my two week post op my surgeon said i didn't have to go back on blood pressure meds, that is just one example of a major win and being worth it to me but each person has to decide why you are doing it and if it is worth the journey. Good luck Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App -
@sally628 It's amazing to want change! But sometimes we go about it in the wrong way! Like I did. I am dealing with severe acid reflux that's impacting my quality of life. Whether, I will be impacted by other complications long term, I don't know Let me tell you that eating is all in our heads! That's why many ppl regain in a few years! Your stomach takes what you give it. Cutting it to almost nothing, may have untold health impacts long term. We're playing with evolution and biology.

@annelliot Was your experience that bad? did you have complications? everyone i know that is a hear post op can eat pretty much anything they want just less! im sure the first year is tough but i need to change.

Trust your feelings! This is a drastic surgery! I had my sleeve done recently. Although my opinion is not in the majority. I will recomend you don't do this! This surgery is scary and life altering. I REGRET decision everyday. I have major acid reflux that I never ever had pre op. I dont know how to stop it. I take 80mg of nexium everyday! Thats maximum dosage. This is the only irreversible surgery. Even the gastric bypass can be reversed if there's serious healthough issues. There are newer procedure coming out like the Gastric Ballon. There will be more over the years! I will always deal with complications from this extreme surgery. I had the lapband and took it out. I will regret doing this to myself everyday. It's not always rosy and you can't turn back. Best wishes.

Sleeve Revision to RNY
007kitkat replied to Mimismom's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
Hey there Mimismom- Did you ever make any decisions on your possible revision surgery. I feel like Im really having a hard time finding info I want. I really want to hear other people who have gone from Sleeve to Mini Gastric Bypass. I want to hear more about specific experiences. People that are 3, 6, 9 mo, 1-2 years out. Anything really. I'm a 2014 sleever who went to Mexico, no complications, high weight 313, low weight 245, then pregnancy last year (my LAST!) Current weight 281- Highly considering revision surgery. -
Osteoperosis as complication from RNY
tasharss22 replied to RXRW's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
I know a few people who have had the RNY and only one has complications and the others don't. The difference I have noticed between them is the one who has complications doesn't follow dr orders. No vitamin, drinking alcohol etc.. if I were you I would go get a second opinion. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App -
Hi All, I am trying to decide whether to have the RNY gastric bypass. My PCP is against it citing that she has 6 patients who she treats and who've had major complications from the surgery, including osteroperosis. Has anyone had this complication or know of anyone who has?

Revision from Lap Band to Sleeve
BigUtahMan replied to RavenDW17's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
I was banded in 2004, removed in 2012 from complications that nearly killed me. Gained all the weight back. Sleeved in November, the easiest surgery I have done. Love it! -
Why Did You Choose Your Specific Type of Weight Loss Surgery?
Pam_2-06-2017 replied to Alex Brecher's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I started this wanting the sleeve but understood that my medical team may think differently. I chose the sleeve because it did not change the biological function of how my body processed foods. Because of this I learned that there are fewer complications down the road. I would say research and discuss with your medical team. Sent from my iPad using the BariatricPal App -
Pregnancy before the one year mark?
Walter.Sobchak replied to dr3am3rstarz's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
My wife's doctor told her 18 months as well. I am sure it is not only for mom's health but for the baby as well. Do not want to risk any complications. The sad part is, we are getting old and we want another baby. She is hoping to be sleeved in May. So then 18 months from then, we will both be close to 40 by then. Outpatient sleeve anyone?
Mandybb replied to Belle_Mimi's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
So there might be some confusion on what "outpatient" means. For example, I was scheduled and admitted through the outpatient surgery center of my hospital but I stayed 24 hours in the hospital after surgery. The word outpatient did not mean that I went home the same day as my surgery. I have never heard of same day Sleeve or bypass surgery and would be frightened if a doctor tried to do that. I was fine within 24 hours but many people stay 2 or 3 nights even. You don't know what your pain level will be or if you will have complications so I wouldn't have felt comfortable going home the same day. That's something to discuss in detail with your surgeon to make sure you understand completely what's happening. Good luck!! Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App -
Newme17 and MelodySG we're all about the same size. My BMI is also 40. I'm 5' 7" though I decided to go with the sleeve because it is less invasive and less chance of complications. My surgery is mid- March. I will keep an eye on how you guys are doing! It's nice to find people who are starting from a similar place. Leading up to the pre-op diet, I'm on an low-carb, big Protein diet and have lost 8 lbs! So happy to be in the 240's this morning!

This is a very drastic way to lose weight. Is it rational to tear away a healthy organ in exchange for weight loss. I am not sure I made the right decision. Complication rates are low but you have no guarantees you won't be among those thar face those issues. Personally, it's probably the biggest mistake of my life. I am dea lung with worsening acid reflux issues that I can tell you know is absolutely not worth the weight loss. My advice to you, and this my opinion. Don't do it

Did you have any blood clots or get one during plastics?
Stella S replied to Be_pretty_epic's topic in Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery
I went into surgery with no blood disorder. Still I had those ow up leg balloons while in hospital and was on blood thinning shots for 2 weeks. I would ask PS their experience in operating with patients with your condition as well as how many complications they experienced in the subset of Stoney's. Stella
