lapband revision bmi 35
FreeToBMe replied to tlah's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
My revision was 4/11/13. What they found was that the stitches failed when the band was put in 3/05/12. I never had a working pouch, it was <1 cm from the esophagus and I vomited daily from when I moved from liquids to food at 2 months post band insertion. I had ulcers from the chronic vomiting visible on the upper endo prior to my revision surgery 2 weeks ago. My pain has been significant. I am still on Lortab. Today is the first day I was not feeling fire stabbing in my abs to get out of bed. Pain IS decreasing, I have real nervous energy and my hunger is little to none. I did have a fever that went to 100.2 in the first week, labs came back normal. It was just my body reacting to the trauma of surgery and that I have an allergy to morphine which we discovered while I was in the hospital 2 days. I have dropped 11 lbs and 1 pant size already. Good luck with your upcoming surgery. I feel so blessed to have not vomited since 4/09/13 after a year of it being my norm. -

Revision... distillization of rny

This past Tuesday I had my revision, sleeve to bypass. During the leak test we discovered I have very slow motility of my esophagus. My surgeon thinks this will correct itself as things from my revision heals. -

Hi Dr Schulman I had an armlift in March this year. The scars are at the back of my arms (I wasnt given any reason for this but had expected them to be on the inside of the arms) and the arms themselves are not as slim as I would have liked given the extent of the scarring. The measurement pre-op was 15 inches and post op is 13 inches. The scars are positioned at the back but close to the inner side. In such circumstances where there is still a significant amount of excess skin, do you think a revision op might be possible to remove the excess and reposition the scar on the inner side of the arm so that it's not immediately visible from the back? Thanks for your advice. Ellen

Ask Dr. Schulman...
Dr. Schulman replied to Dr. Schulman's topic in Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery
The pain will be about the same for the fleur-de-lis or a standard TT. The extra skin incision does not really hurt and will not add anything significant to your recovery - unless you have problems with healing the extra incision. The pain will be from the muscle repair. A "corset stitch" is a technique for muscle tightening. Most people do a variation of this, without calling it a "corset". Keep in mind, because this is a revision, you may not need the muscle tightened if it was tightened the first time - this will make it a much easier recovery for you if no muscle repair is done. Your waisline will be much much better, even without this "corset". Good luck, and let us know how it goes. -
Dr. Schulman: Once again I come to the answer man with a question. In less than a month I am having lipo of my inner and outer thighs and knees, outer thigh lift, butt lift, arms and possible anchor revision of my tummy tuck. I have a lot of significant people in my life telling me that I don't need the anchor revision. I don't like the little roll of skin on my upper abs when I sit down, but for some reason, I'm a little nervous about that particular scar. I don't know why since I am going to have so many scars! Would you please look at the attached pictures and give me your professional opinion on whether you think I could benefit from the anchor revision (sorry to put you on the spot!). I would really appreciate it! Thanks!

The Keys to Becoming a Successful Bandster!
elcee replied to rkwilliams1013's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I think a big part of this journey is aligning expectations with reality. What the Dr's/Marketers tell you isn't quite the same. That is why support groups are so important because it is through those that you learn what it is really like to live with a band. The Dr's don't really explain how it feels when something is stuck or you eat too much. This is because they understand the science but not being banded they don't know what it really feels like. Cleo's Mum being a big eater you actually sound like an ideal candidate for the band. The people that it tends not to be so ideal for are those that like to graze(eat constantly) such as myself! However I think it has worked really well.Yes I still eat more often than I should and I still eat junk but not to the same extent as previously. I know that you say that you are still hungry after your small portion, but is it true hunger? Most of us have the ability to eat far more than we need because it tastes/looks/feels good etc but we are not truly hungry. Sometimes being hungry but not able to eat more can be because of eating too quickly etc. There have been a number of times when I have eaten too quickly resulting in being stuck but still desperately wanting/needing food. So the key is to make good choices, remember to take small bites, chew well and leave a little time in between bites to make sure it has gone down OK! This took me a long time to get used to as I was always a really fast eater but it does make a difference. Don't focus on 1/2 cup or anything like that. That concept is ridiculous. I agree that eating from a wide variety of food groups helps. That is what I and most banded people in Australia do and it does work. Lo carb is great for some but it is not the only way. If you do revise good luck but be careful. There is no such thing as a perfect WLS. Each type comes with it's own set of problems. You don't want to be dissappointed again because the reality doesn't live upto the marketing! I agree that the sleeve sounds great but it is still relatively new so the long term effects are not yet known. Lots of sleevers have really bad reflux and getting the right size sleeve to suit you may also be a problem. If they don't make it small enough to start you could have the same issues. Hope you are able to work out what the best way to go for you is soon. -
November bandsters unite!!
ssankofa73 replied to topazz's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hi Everyone! I'm having a band revision on Nov. 11th with Dr. Geiss at Syosset Hospital. I'm a "born again bandster" and even though I've been through this before, I'm still nervous but excited to kick my weight loss into gear once again and reach my goal. Dr. Geiss implanted a 4cc band in me in 2007 and I lost some of my excess weight but I still have a long way to go. About 6 months ago I maxxed out on my fills so no more saline can be injected into my current band and I hit a plateau in terms of my weight loss so I'm going in for the 10 cc band this time. Two of my friends had the 10 cc band implanted about a year or so after me and both of them are now skinny and healthy. I'm hoping this new band will help me have the same results. Good luck to you all! -
Turler - Hey girl - I'm thinking I may need a scar revision surgery in the end. It depends on my skin and weight loss, but if I have to go to PS for any lifts or tucks I'm going to see if they can fix it. The doctor told me to use mederma (sp?) on it. I have some and am going to start using it. I hope it will help. I was also told to use vitamin E on it - I think that works for stretch marks, I'm not sure about raised scars. I haven't lost anything in almost a month. I'm trying not to get discouraged. I'll admit part has been my fault. I did great for three weeks and then last week came. DH and I ate out every night. My girls were in Florida visiting with the grandparents (my mom and dad). We ate BAD food - I'm talking Steakhouses, Italian, Pizza, Bread, Red Lobster. Things I don't need to be eating...although I didn't eat much of those things (the band kept me from doing that - YEA!). Then this past weekend we went to the beach...that didn't help me any! I still feel guilty about last week. I didn't log my foods, because I knew I'd done bad. I should go back and find out the calories...it keeps me accountable, but the past is the past and I'm determined to put it behind me. I was shocked and still am that I haven't gained anything! I just knew I'd gained some weight on Thursday when I weighed in. I know what to do though - this week is a new week and I'm starting over. On the ticker. Go to the site and setup an account. It will ask for your weight. Enter your ORIGINAL weight (before surgery), not where you are now. Then when you make your ticker enter your current weight. I don't think you can backtrack for your ticker. Let me know if that helps you...If not we'll try something else.

Time with band VS surgery time, complications, etc?
The.new.g replied to SoCalDixieGal's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
My revision was 12/29/12. I was banded in march 2007, lost 70 lbs. had a baby in late 2010, and the band never worked after delivery. Imaging was "normal". I tried to get it working again but when it became obvious that it just wasn't, I pursued revision. After surgery, my surgeon told my the band had somehow become unclasped and was just loose. I believe this happened when I was in labor. I asked him about scarring, and he said all band revisions have scarring, some more than others. Mine wasn't terrible because the original surgeon didn't sew my stomach over my band. Anyway, my sleeve is working, and other than post op nausea I have had no troubles so far. Very minimal post op pain, never even filled my rx for oxycodone. I spent 1 night in the hospital. My revision was all in one surgery. Hope this helps, good luck! -
Time with band VS surgery time, complications, etc?
SoCalDixieGal posted a topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Trying to better understand the risks and complications associated with band/sleeve conversions. I understand from one doctor I spoke to that there's a greater risk with revisions. If you've had any complications, no matter how minor - or no complications, I'm looking to learn: how long did you have your band? did you have a lot of complications with your band previously - e.g. that's what would have led to lots of scaring, etc If you didn't have any excessive band complications, did your sleeve surgeon say you had a lot of scaring from the band? I think I"m just trying to get to whether or not there's a great chance of scaring if you've had your band longer (I've had mine for just over 5 years. -
February/March 08 plastics
ousooner replied to losingjusme's topic in Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery
Sorry I don't check in as often lately. Good to see everyone is doing well. I am doing pretty good. I am like you though, all I have done is eat since PS. My Dr said not to diet while I heal. Well, I certainly can not be accused of dieting. I started back to day being good. I wasn't unfilled prior to PS, but have never been really tight anyways. I called and cheduled a fill for April 4th. I really need it. I am having revision done on May 21st and I want maximum results, so I am really buckling down, even before my fill. Swelling is getting better. I am now wearing my pre-op pants finally, though are still a little snug. The great thing is that when I wear someting tight now, nothing hangs over my belt and no once can tell they are snug. -
Anyone Else Have Nighttime Reflux Coughing Or Vomitting?
Lelina replied to Bekah_GA's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
Hi mike54, I have 'choking' from the band at night and a lot of vomiting during the day and night. I had gastroscopy and it proved that my esophagus is all pebly instead of smooth. The Doctor took biopsy and luckily I don't have cancer. He loosened the band and suggested revision surgery. Now it is up to me to decide whether it will be sleeve or mini GBP. Did you have revision and if you did how is it with the reflux now? -
Dr. John Bagnato - Bagnato Bandits

Hi Everyone- just wanted to post a quick update- I'm trying hard to stay on plan and at around 1000 calories a day. Its hard- especially with zero restriction. I'm also moving my big rear and walking a mile every day! I will be glad to get a fill on Friday and back to being able to eat only small amounts. It's comical (almost) that just a few weeks ago I was whining about not being able to eat 'normal' foods and wishing for the days when I'd be able to eat them. Now I'm wishing I could go back to the restricted feeling. LOL. I swear I am a gas factory. LOTS of foods and even exercise I find, gives me gas- or lets me expel the gas- LOL. I'm feeling much better about having my port revision and am slowly but surely coming out of that depressed mood that I had gotten into. I appreciate everyone who msg'd me and checked on me. I will update on Friday as soon as I'm home from the procedure. Thank the lucky lord Dr. B says I don't have to have the zappy wrist thing again- Its crazy, but the only thing I really am dreading is the darn IV- which should tell any newbie that the actual procedure is not that bad at all!! Everyone's progress looks great! Hopefully soon I'll be back to seeing the numbers go DOWN!! -
Thanks Sara, I have the sleeve. At first I was going to get the band and then I started reading all the problems people were having. I was like hell no! When I was in Mexico there was a girl who only had hers for six months and she had problems with the port already. Just six months out and she was having a revision. Anyways please keep in touch. Maybe if you start to gain weight you can do the pre-op diet off and on. Have a safe trip.

If there was a Class Action Lawsuit against the band....
josette68 replied to Nursebarbie's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I would definitely be interested. I had the lapband back in 2003. I have had other surgeries due to slippage and to put in a new band. I just got it taken out on the 19th of December due to dilated esophagus in which they expected to get better when they took the saline back in February. I got the lapband done in Colorado where they have since closed the clinic. Which I don't understand since they had at least 900 patients. I was 281 down to 140 and now back to 220. My insurance denied a revision to the sleeve. I will be working with primary and surgeon who took it out to hopefully get a sleeve. Kinda stupid that got denies since I am headed to the same place I was before. I have invested so much time and money in the lapband. I live in New Mexico and the many trips to Colorado due to problems and other surgeries such as tummy tuck and arms done due to that insurance doesn't cover. I have paid out AT LEAST $40,000. out of pocket for me. I AM DEFINITELY INTERESTED. And still wondering about the Doctors where the clinic closed. -
If there was a Class Action Lawsuit against the band....

Nychkole2, yep! Same here! I am African American and have always had super long, thick hair. No longer the case! My hair is so thin that it scares me to think of what revision wls surgery would do to what's left. I am SO afraid of losing the rest of it! I can't afford to have it become any thinner!!! I have to get this thing out if my body!!! Surgery freaks me out though. Yikes! -
Thanks Ms. sss - it certainly is a tough call. I paid $16,000 in 2009 for the lap band that is now being taken out. MGB will be an additional $19,000. Believe me, I am all for investing in myself but its a hard pill to swallow if it is only for another 5-10 years. The trend seems to be after a certain amount of time, people are following low cal, exercise, feel like they are starving themselves and nothing is happening. Weirdly enough, weight gain is my least worry. Sure, it will frustrate me, but any medical complications scare the bejesus out of me! I'm hearing ulcers and yet more revisions? I'm 50 now; I don't really want to be having surgeries in my 60's and 70's when the risks become greater. My surgeon/clinic provides support etc for 5 years. I think that says a lot as well. Its not lifetime. One side of me says, just do it - you have read enough to know it will help you stay on a healthy lifestyle. And the other says, get a personal trainer and have him/her weigh you in 3 days/week to be accountable. I don't have to make the decision today. I am grateful for site's like these that can assist in decision making. Back in 2009 there wasnt much support for the lap band.

So, I am nearly 15 years (yes years) postop. I started at 315 and plummeted to 142 within 10 months of surgery. I was super happy but I was also sick. I didn't have energy, I looked sick...but I was SKINNY! For the first time in my adult life, I wore a SMALL! I loved and hated it at the same time. Then I was told to gain weight because due to all the excess skin, I was really underweight and it was NOT healthy for me. Well, long story short...I can eat pretty much anything and not dump. Then my portions started growing and my snacking came back. I gained, I lost, I gained, I lost...you all know how that goes. I got back up to 230 and was miserable again. I started doing VERY well earlier this year and lost nearly 25 pounds of regain, then COVID-19 struck and has me working from home. This led right back to horrible habits and not as much movement (I didn't even have to walk to my car!). The company I work for has wonderful programs to help get motion and nutrition back on track. Well, that is if you are able bodied (I have bad knees and am just trying to keep replacements at bay as long as I can) and can eat like a normal person. The PT and nutritionist had me doing things that just didn't work for me...not once but TWICE. I told them over and over I couldn't exercise on my knees nor could I eat the portions they were assigning to me. Frustrated, I started researching revisions. I found one I was seriously contemplating, regardless of insurance coverage (I was THAT desperate). I was on the verge of calling my GP for a referral when I thought, "What about going back to basics"? So, about two weeks ago, I found some sites (this is one of them!) with bariatric specific meal plans, food, vitamins, gadgets, etc. I took the plunge and ordered protein powders, protein snacks, meal replacements and changed my vitamin routine to the 1 A Day on here. I bought shaker bottles for my shakes, 15 minute increment water bottles to make me drink my water (if you knew me, you would know I HATE water), and I also cleared two shelves in my pantry for JUST ME. It's now been just over a week and I am down 4 pounds. I have so much more energy that my husband was like "who are you and where is my wife"! I have already noticed a difference in some of my clothes - no more dancing routine putting on my yoga pants! It's not easy, but I have to remember where I was and where I want to be once again! Sorry this was so long but I started typing and couldn't stop!

Approvals with BCBS Federal

I'm a lapband revision. BCBS Fed approved my lapband in 2/2011, port replacement in 3/2013, and lapband removal 11/2013. I just got approved to have the sleeve (surgery scheduled for March 14!!). However, I did have to go through the 3 month supervised diet, psych eval, and all pre-op tests again. I just got my surgery date!! March 14. . Any news, NewLife?
