    Angels for pre-bandsters

Believe it or not I had an angel who was a BYPASS person. She came and supported me - I met her on a local board for weight loss surgery - and not once did she tell me that I should have the orther surgery done. I completely support being an angel. I am actually going to be an angel for 2 people here in Milwaukee. One being my best friend's mom - who has always struggled with her weight and another is my boss's daughter who has said great things to her about how I I am looking. I totally support it so count me in!!!

    Need a mentor/ Iowa

Hi, I'm getting banded in Sept and I would love a buddy or two or a few to help me through this journey. I have so many questions and it would be nice to have a little support group to turn to. I am 38, work in Information Services, have a 2 year old son and two cats who are also my kids. I gained lots of weight with my pregnancy that I just can't seem to shed. Thus, my decision for the lap band. This is my last resort and I can't wait to begin my new life! I live in Fairfield. I look forward to talking to you soon! Cindy
  3. Hi everyone! I haven't been on here for awhile! I hope everyone finds this website as usfl as I did and still do! its been almost 15 months since my Surgery. My starting weight was 465 lbs and as of this morning I am down to 222lbs exactly that's a 243 weight loss total. I hit a stall for Weeks!! so I started walking more and added more food to my diet (healthy food of course) once I started that the weight started coming off again (PHHHEW) I am 42 lbs away from my original goal weight and let me tell you.. THIS FEELS AMAZING!!!! my life has completely changed for the better.. im more active and im living the life I always wanted for me and my daughter if anyone is deciding to get this surgery I will always tell you GO FOR IT!!! I had fears but the happiness of feeling free and "normal" outweighs that fear I had before deciding to have this surgery. it literally saved my life! good luck to those who are starting their journey and keep it up! I will always say this; This was the best decision I ever made and I do not regret anything!!!!!!
  4. Jeni, I was a size 10 in shoes before surgery and yesterday, I was able to buy a size 8. I had read on here so often about people losing shoe sizes as part of their weight loss, and I was hopeful. But then it didn't happen, and I was thinking it wasn't going to, which is exactly when it happened. LOL
  5. I was banded last Friday and am surprised by the amount of pain I am in - I decided to weigh myself today and found that I had gained 1 1/2 pounds even though I am eating at the most 3 Protein shakes a day and Water. I decided today to stop using the pain medication prescribed by my Dr. I(in case it was increasing my constipation) even though I still feel very sore, especially when I lie down or get up from a lie-down position. I haven't been able to have a bowel movement and am wondering if that is increasing the soreness I am feeling. I started to take Colase (stool softener) and today I took Correctol but still no luck. I'm sort of ranting today - feeling uncertain about what to expect and whether this is normal. All I know is that I hurt, am constipated, have no hunger, but am gaining weight. Oh yeah! The other thing is that I am on an Insulin Pump and I haven't needed to add any insulin since this started which means the pump is giving me about 70 units a day spread out over 24 hours. Prior to getting the banding, I was using about 300 units a day and still had uncontrollable blood sugar levels.
  6. Had my Dr visit last week.... I didn't gain any weight but loss 4 pounds. Dr said he was proud of that success alone. That was encouraging. No fill needed... THANK GOD ! I am 5cc filled in a 10cc band. Does anyone have more than a 5 cc fill going on ????? Excited with my success and want to share with all. My weightloss is very slow but at least I am losing.

    I need sleep!

As you lose weight and break the carb/sugar cycle of addiction, sleep will definitely change. I need much less now than I did before. But, 2-3 is not enough for anyone. Hopefully it's just a phase that will end soon. Best wishes.
  8. I've got the one sure-fire way to avoid stalls: Get off the scale. Scales are crazy-makers. You know the saying that a watched pot never boils? Well, a watched scale never moves. Trust your plan and the weight will come off. Good luck, Tek

ripple effect with relatives and friends

This is quite the subject ... how our weight loss effects those around us. Wendy, I have thought of the same ... about my heavy friends and how it will effect them because I'll no longer be a "partner in crime" eating things with them that I used to. And if anything, it's a way of challenging every relationship in my life to see what quality each is made of. It will be a refining process. The other thought is ... Perhaps certain friends just seem to move on because you don't have as much in common anymore? Like Wendy for example ... now doing marathons where she didn't before and I'm sure her focus is very different from where it once was. And is it possible that thin friends could have problems with us losing weight because we could seem like competition? You know the saying ... men watch women ... and women watch women. Hummm. Anyway ... this road is still ahead of me since I've only lost 17 pounds so far. The one thing I'm most looking forward to is being ONE SIZE SMALLER than my little sister!!! I told her I've been the BIG Sister long enough and now it's her turn. She screamed ... "You're going to be smaller than me???" She's now back on weight watchers! Ha!!!! Watch out little Sister ... Here I come! xo Lori in Oregon Dr. Rumbaut 07/09/03

ripple effect with relatives and friends

I am pre-band, but am already wondering what the effect of the weight loss will be on those close to me. I can see that my parents are worried about me having surgery...and they are also worried that I have chosen to go to Mexico for the surgery...but I think they will accept the weightloss in stride. I would love to see my father have the surgery as he is overweight, high blood pressure, type II diabetes and sleep apnea..need I say anymore! I do not want to follow in his footsteps medically! My children...12 and 19...its really funny but when I say something about being overweight they both comment I am not fat...sheesh come on guys! but I think they have always known me this weight so in their minds..this is normal for me..and I am not overweight..it will be really interesting to see their long term acceptance. I don't have alot of close friends..and not any that I regulary 'hang out' with socially so most of my co-workers or friends will be supportive of my weight loss... I think.. I can think of one or two that may feel slighted as I have always been bigger and we have made jokes as to that. My dear sweet boyfriend.. ... he loves me just as I am..and tells me so often. When I brought up the surgery issue with him, I broached it at...we want to spend the next 50 years together....if I keep going I won't be healthy or even around to enjoy those years with you. This guy can eat what he wants, he has a great body and doesn't seem to gain weight. Through the last few weeks, as we dine out, he will ask.."so after banding will you eat this" I explain that I would have probably eaten "this much"(and I show him) I think he enjoys the times we stop and grab chicken wings and watch tv. I have assured him that we will still do that... it's just that instead of 10 wings, I will eat one! so we only have to order one order...and he can have 9 instead of 10! I keep reassuring him that it won't change that much..only I will get healthier for our future. It's cute cuz he says he wants to see me happy...and if I am happy he is happy. I am really anxious to see how he will really feel.
  11. Here is how my doctor explained it to me… It will take awhile for your periods to become regular. First off women (especially obese women) store estrogen in there fat cells, so when you start losing weight the extra estrogen is released in to your system causing heavy or just irregular periods. Secondly a dramatic decrease and sustained decease in your daily caloric intake can actually make your period stop or skip months. My doctor said to expect my body to go through a variety of responses over the course of 1 year post banding. YAH ME L Hope this helps
  12. Hello everyone. On Tuesday, it will be 8 weeks since I had gastric sleeve surgery. I am having a long stall. It's been over two weeks where I keep gaining and losing the same 2 lbs. Is it normal to stall this long? Thank you.

    Friggin Plateaus

Hi Everyone, I think they should offer post op classes on 'How to deal with plateaus". Now I know no one is feeling sorry for me because my weight loss has been great, but I have been such a good girl making good food choices and I still on a plateau for 10 days in a row every month. I will go up and down 2 pounds from my lowest weight and have to struggle to get back to it and then drop some more. But overall, if I look at averages, I have consistently lost between 8-10 lbs a month in the last 5 months and an overall average of 11 1/2 pounds per month since being banded. So even though I consider myself somewhat intelligent, I still want to scream and jump up and down like a baby when I get on the scale and experience this. FOr a week now, I have bounce around from an alltime low of 241 back up to 242.5 and then have struggled all week to get back to 241. Now I know based on history to date that in the next few days I will see a 3-4 pound drop, but sometimes I get scared that I will be stuck here and never see anything below 200. Now the logical thing would be to throw out the scale, but for me this would not work. The daily accountability I feel to myself is important and I know that if I don't do this, I will be more unfocused and think that maybe a couple of tortilla chips or a piece of bread will be OK today because what I don;t know won't hurt me. So I guess everyone is different in this way. SO does anyone have any advice other than throwing my scale off a tall building? Babs in TX 334/241/180 -93

    Need PCP referral....

You don't say whether you are in an HMO (which requires a referral for the surgery), but that's what it sounds like. I would hit him with a two-pronged approach. The first would be scientific: Go to the website for the American Society for Bariatric Surgeons and go to the section called "The rationale for surgery." It does deal mostly with bypass, but the rationale holds for ALL bariatric surgery. The NIH, The American Heart Association, The National Heart Lung Institue of Health (part of NIH) have all endorsed bariatric surgery for patients with a BMI of 40 and above. I think the Heart Association has too, but I don't remember for sure. Look up their position papers. I know I saw all of these position papers in an appendix of a book on weight-loss surgery (it was about bypass), but I don't remember the name. Then I would get him all of the information on LapBand (maybe Inamed could help you there). But I would also take Alexandra's approach and pour your heart out to him. Document all the diets you have been on, all the weight you've lost, all the weight you've regained. And tell him what being obese has done to you as a person - how you feel. You could do this in a letter if you want, but I would hand him the letter in person. It will be harder to ignore that way. You might also see if ObesityLaw.com has any advice. I think they deal mostly with insurance companies, but they may have some useful info. Good luck. Nancy nancy
  15. Thanks! I read about the amazing weight loss of some people on this site and keep hoping for the same! I'm following.....
  16. Yes some of us have had amazing weight loss but it wasn't easy. It was a long difficult road. I literally and figuratively worked my ass off. You've lost 6 pounds in 11 days. During the same period, I lost about 15 but lets put that in perspective...I had a starting weight of 135 pounds more than you. I had so much more to lose. My 15 was about 4% of my total weight. Your 6 pounds is about 3% of your total weight. So really, you're doing very well. Just keep following the process, relax and enjoy the journey. It really is amazing!

    First Post-op visit

Dr. very impressed with my progress, says I am doing all the right things, and is happy enough with my weight loss to hold off my 1st fill for another 3 weeks. Great news was he released me to go back to aqua-aerobics yayaa!!! Although I am not losing weight post op as much as I thought I would, I know that I will never weigh this weight again, so every pound off is a pound off forever! Looking forward to a lot of good things this year!

    Port Site

I had no idea where my port was until today when I had my first fill. I did poke around on my tummy trying to figure out where it was with no luck. My fill was done under xray so the doctor could see where the port was. From what my doctor tells me when you still have some weight to lose the port will not be easily found on some people.....but as you lose you will be able to feel it better.
  19. Thank you everyone! I had to be on one day liquid diet, I recommend Kellogg protein water, they have packets for travel! They taste good too, 5grams of protein in each serving. The liquid diet today not to bad, a lil hungry i just stayed full of as many liquids as possible (all low cal) My stomach gurgle gurgle! lol Yea i hope that I stay pretty full off of the liquids for 2 weeks, not that i honestly ever had a huge appatite, well my body sucks and likes to hold on to anything that isnt under 1000 cals! lol.. I am excited and nervous, but I am sure I will do great and finally after all my life will actaully lose all my weight and be a thin girl, instead of the big girl! To the person that is getting urs done tomorrow.. I wish u the best too!! I will be on Thursday and let everyone know how I did! thanks! :woot:
  20. I hate to be a downer, but for me maintenance has always been the struggle of ANY diet I've ever been on, and for the most part, the sleeve is no different. After you are past your honeymoon stage, losing the weight becomes harder and harder. Gaining can happen fairly easily (for me anyway) all I have to do is quit paying attention to what I put in my mouth and viola, the scale goes up. Here is where the sleeve makes a difference for me. I eat about 900-1,200 calories a day. I'm almost 2.5 years post-op. I don't feel hungry even on such low calories. I do much better when I eat 80-115g of protein a day. When I let more than 100g of carbs slip in that is when I feel MORE hungry, due to more carbs. Maintenance is for life, that is the hard part! But you can do it, if you are willing to put in the work!
  21. Threetimesacharm

    Nervous about maintenance

For me I wouldn't say that maintenance is harder than before sleeve. I find it easier because you really can't eat much food and I find if I do I don't feel well. I agree that carbs need to be monitored as these foods you CAN eat more of so you do. I find if I watch my carbs and still basically eat what I did during weight loss phase I am fine. The luxury is that you can eat what others do and not worry about gaining because the sleeve is your built in portion control.

    Exercises for drooping skin

I was told that the likelihood of skin "bouncing back" is determined by genetics. Most of the time drooping is going to happen because of the rapid weight loss. When you lose weight quickly, it is difficult for the body to compensate with skin tightening. An individual's age is also a factor and the amount of weight that you lose. (I'm fearful of this myself but I won't let it stop me, that's for sure lol) I'm sure that you can do some toning exercises that will help such as lifting light weights. I try to incorporate light weights into my cardio. I use 2-5 lb weights on the treadmill. You don't have to do cardio with them though. You can simply lift. Do you have pinterest? If so there are a ton of exercises for wls patients. If you don't have it, I recommend that you sign up. I have found so much information that it is unbelievable. Take Care!

    Newbee and Emotional....Normal?

This time in your life is some what like the death of your closest friend...you are likely to be emotionally unstable...for some of us we have always been like that and hence weight issues. However every day you will feel better. He is a man and Iam sure a good one at that, although I do think they think differently to women. Not wrong just differently.Forgive him move on and bust his balls big time if he does it again as he now knows better.Be kind to yourself and him as in a couple of weeks you will be feeling loads better.
  24. Congrats, that is a MAJOR milestone in your weight loss journey!
