Height differences
ready_forchange replied to ready_forchange's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I don't barely meet the criteria that was in 2015 nearly two years ago, and at that point I had lost 30 pounds which I quickly gained back. I weigh between 260-265. My feet hurt all the time, and my cholesterol was a litte high when I had my last blood work. I can't show proof for three years, because it hasn't been high that long. I have migraines all the time which my doctor thinks weight is a big contributor. I just keep gaining, and I am ready to feel better. I have struggled with my weight for 10 years now. I understand the complications, but I have three children that I want to be here for. At the rate I'm going my health is going to deteriorate fast. My BMI is about 44 now. -
Hi everyone! I need a little support today and thought if I shared my journey it would help. I had RNY in June 2015 at 248 and am currently 197. I got as low as 175 in March 2016 but then I had an internal hernia in April (a complication of gastric bypass that affects 5-10% of patients) and then put my rescue dog to sleep in May, which devastated me. I also took a vacation two months out, and had a hysterectomy in November 2015. So it's been a wild ride. I had all kinds of ideas about how I was going to live my life post surgery, and of course I was going to do everything right/perfectly. Ha! But I was 185 at my one year appointment, and my surgeon was pleased. I said I wanted to lose another 10 lbs and he said he didn't think I needed to but go ahead. (No doctor EVER said anything like that to me!) I'm back on track and doing better, but as I'm reading all these posts and comments I'm motivated to do more. Pre Op feeling of FAILURE
AnneElliot replied to krissyleigh's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I wish I embraced the body positive movement more! This surgery is not a tool. Your not buting something from a hardware store to help you lose weight. Your significantlyaltering your gastrointestinal system to solely lose weight. If you don't have significant comorbidities than I would suggest you reconsider the need to do this. Eating no more than a cup of food for the rest of your life is a sorry way of living. Living with the possibility of complications at anytime as we age is a sorry way of living Living without certain foods cause your stomach can't digest them and not taking NSAIDS for pain is a sorry way of living. -
Need your input and advice
AnneElliot replied to Sassyagain's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I revised and I think you need to think hard about this decision. I still throw up with the sleeve, I never had acid reflux with the band and now deal with it. Your restriction are greater and there's no relief via defill. As a twice banded patient, your at much higher risk for complications. Although it's harder to lose weight, that's because your metobalism was shut down with the band. You may lose very little with the sleeve. It's very very difficult with the sleeve and doesn't feel natural. Its odd living without 85% of my stomach. -

May I ask, if you have no comorbidities and may barely meet the one bmi requirement...then why do a drastic surgery? This is not easy. There are many restriction and possible complications The restrictions don't dissappear after weightloss nor does the risk complications. Good Luck -
Why did you choose the sleeve over bypass?
PatientEleventyBillion replied to goingtothebeach's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
My surgeon and two second-opinion surgeons all chose sleeve but did not force me to make a choice. Their arguments stemmed from the following: - My age (34) - Despite having stage 3 liver fibrosis and diabetes they were both new and controlled (w/blood workups showing improvements via dietary changes) - Sleeve can easily later be remedied with a bypass (not an option to everyone, esp those worried about insurance coverage) - If one ever needs invasive surgery done later in that abdominal region (including liver transplant) the bypass can later cause complications. Those who aren't considered "dire" bypass patients (in a risk assessment bypass is almost always more risky, even if the gold standard) might be coaxed into a sleeve because of it being minimally invasive in comparison - less cuts, less routing, etc. If it's left up to you, it's your choice. I would ask a lot of questions, especially on if bypass is an option later, both from your surgeon and your insurer if you're going through them. -
You need to follow your doctors instructions to the letter. I'll tell you what I tell my patients when I discharge them...there is a method to our madness. You might not agree with our instructions but unless you want complications it's in your best interest to follow them. Hopefully you didn't do any permanent damage. Good luck. [emoji846]

Am I wrong for being upset and worried? I am in the process of getting a revision from band to sleeve. I did 4 months of nutrition class. I have documentation from all previous doctors and even my former surgeon. My info was submitted Feb. 8th. They have 15 days to make a decision. On the 16th I found out that one of the files did not open so Aetna asked that the file be refaxed. It was. I called today its the 24th still pending. I called 4 times and they said that they still have not received the fax. My dr office said that they did. I am pissed. Next Wednesday is the 15th day. I have all of the requirements. BMI, co mortified hell I just got diagnosed with Pulmonary Artery Pressure and my Pulmonolgist recommends he surgery to get to a healthy weight so that I won't have severe complications. I am so upset. It should not take this long. My band was approved within days. My husband is getting the sleeve in 3 weeks his was approved in a couple of days. Has anyone gone through something like this? Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

How long did you take off from work?
orionburn replied to XmeghannstarX's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Had surgery on a Wednesday (1/25) and returned to work on Monday 2/13, so about 2 1/2 weeks off. I have a desk job so it wasn't so bad. First week was still somewhat rough due to the lack of energy. My doc wanted me off for 4 weeks but there was no way I could manage that financially. I felt like I was in between a rock and a hard place. I did have some complications and really could have used another week of rest, but mentally I was going downhill because I was miserable sitting around all day at home. Getting back to work wasn't the easiest thing but mentally it did wonders for me and got my spirits back up. For me I couldn't have imagined going back to working have a physical job or having to be on my feet all day long. After 3 full weeks I probably would have been okay, but not after 2. -

My doctor put me out for 5 weeks, but I could have easily gone back in 1 (or less). No complications and no pain. The only real physical issue was fatigue in the afternoon, but that's resolved with a nap (which I do in my office if I'm tired, during lunch time). Sleeved 8/31/16 -
How long is hospital stay?
orionburn replied to ThickGirl5683's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Depends on your doctor. Ours was a mandatory 3 days / 2 nights. My doc only does surgeries on Wednesdays and the goal is to have you home Friday afternoon. It doesn't hurt to plan for the unexpected. I had some complications and didn't get home until the following Tuesday. There's always a potential to keep you an extra day for observation. -
Low BMI sleevers... results?
sleevermomof4 replied to NightPilgrim's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Good luck with your surgery. I was a low BMI patient to. Sleeved three month ago and haven't regretted it so far. Have had a couple of stalls but all in all I have lost near 20kg and I would never have been able to do so without surgery. I can play sports again and am happily active with my family. Thank God every day for having made this decision before my over weight led to other health issues. I know many sleevers lose more in three month but I am happy with where I am at. Some days I get scared that I am going through a leak or complications and start researching symptoms [emoji23]. Some things are tough to eat . But it's a learning curve. What works for others doesn't necessarily work for you. Red meat is still difficult for me. Had a heavy desert once and ended up running from table and puking. But otherwise my biggest issue is to drink enough water every day. Wish you all the best. Hope this helps -
The difference...
PatientEleventyBillion replied to msladyglittersparkles1131's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
In my case I was given a choice but I had a couple second opinions and every surgeon, even one who prefers a bypass, suggested sleeve. When they first said "your age", that was, to me, an utterly ridiculous assertion. However, having seen a number of complications for surgery in the area of the stomach or liver down the road with those who had a bypass, it was clear sleeve was the better option. Plus, if you have a good surgeon, they will give you the option of a bypass 1-3 years after sleeve if it's not working out for you the way you want it to. In my case, while I have a number of serious issues, they were all stabilized well and the indications were that they could all be easily reversed. Every situation is different though. -
Newbie here! 6 mo P/O and Pregnant!
MissouriMama replied to sarahsweetpea31802's topic in Pregnancy with Weight Loss Surgery
We also tried for 5 years and I had previously been diagnosed with PCOS. Had surgery and got pregnant 5 months out. I think my pregnancy would have been complicated had I NOT had the surgery. Everything could not have gone better for me. I boosted my health snacks and that was it. I gave birth naturally to a beautiful baby girl. Gained 17lbs throughout pregnancy and was back to pre pregnancy weight 2 days after. Went right back to losing with breastfeeding. My baby girl is currently 10 months old and we are both happy and healthy. I know my situation was not the ideal or recommended timing but nothing could have gone better for us and we hope you have the same experience! Wouldn't change a thing! Best of luck to you and congrats! Happiness all around! -
I don't think anyone should consider the band. I think more are removed every day than placed. Too many complications. I think the sleeve is becoming the main go-to procedure. For those that already have acid reflux, the RNY bypass would be better. A good surgeon's opinion will be the most helpful for your particular situation.

How long to wait to get pregnant and water births
MissouriMama replied to Nikki Monroe's topic in Pregnancy with Weight Loss Surgery
I have heard this as well. I got pregnant 5 months after surgery. I gave birth completely naturally without any complications or drugs at a birthing center. I didn't even get Tylenol! I got up and walked out with my baby girl 4 hours after giving birth and felt great. Labored in a tub got out and delivered on a bed. They did consider me high risk because I had a very healthy pregnancy. No issues and in range for all test while pregnant. YOU will have to educate THEM. They know nothing about bariatrics. I went prepared with papers and research on what I needed to do and what MY plan was to have a healthy pregnancy. Boost your healthy Snacks and do your homework and you can do it. Don't let anyone tell you you can't have the birth you want because you simply can't eat as much at once. Best of luck to you and congrats!!!! -
Gaining weight during pregnancy
MissouriMama replied to Katy2051's topic in Pregnancy with Weight Loss Surgery
I got pregnant 5 months after surgery and had a completely ideal pregnancy without any complications whatsoever. Gained 17lbs throughout and it was all gone two days after I delivered. I didn't gain anything until I was a few months in. I dropped to for the first couple months. Went right back to losing afterwards too. (I breastfed and am still 10 months out) Ive had to really boost my calories to not continue to lose but all has been well. I hope everything is going wonderful for you! -
I cannot decide if I should do this or not
sarahblu replied to BeachMommy2Girls's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
The "what ifs" can be so scary. The fear of the unknown... But, we don't know our future either way. The surgery is unknown and whether or not issues will arise and also NOT doing anything is unknown. Either way, you need to decide for yourself. Both are a choice. Personally, I chose the risk for the hopeful reward. Doing something for my health in a positive way was the best choice for me. This is not a quick fix or an easy road. You will still have to work at it every day. I had complications in the beginning that landed me back in the hospital for an additional week. I then had a wicked round of nausea that lasted for about a month and half. Things can happen and they can be awful but they can be that way if you choose not to have the surgery. I am the healthiest I have ever been and am able to run, hike and actually participate in life. Once you decide, time will seem to stand still but then afterwards, it will fly by!! Best wishes for you! -
Weight Before & After

@hmm33502 Thanks! You are doing great! I was banded in 2008 at 380 pounds but had too many complications and had it removed in 2012 and gained a million pounds. -
I cannot decide if I should do this or not
CocoNina replied to BeachMommy2Girls's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I'm 10 days post op. I'll be honest, I didn't expect the pain to be this painful. It gets better everyday but emotionally, I'm sick of being weak from the surgery. It's a huge & life changing decision only you can decide for yourself. Even though I'm sort of emotionally drained, I've already lost 20 lbs since the liquid pre-op diet. I could never lose even that much weight before. If I could, I wouldn't have gotten the surgery. But in your condition, this will be a positive result for you since you need to lose weight. Ask yourself can you do it on your own by sticking to a strict diet or am I willing to go to the extreme with surgery? Complications are low according to statistics I've read. My hospital has 0 fatalities with weight loss surgery. Height 5'0" Weight for WLS consultation: 216 lbs. Surgery date: 2/13/17 Goal: - 71 lbs for healthy BMI (about 145 lbs). Current weight: 194.4 lbs My profile picture is not me. It's my "FitSpiration" body. -
Possible revision to sleeve from band
Berry78 replied to alli.wakefield's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
I also think the revision is a good idea for you. Even if you want to take more time considering, I highly recommend you get the band removed. It isn't helping, and it will likely cause complications down the road (like slippage, etc). -
I cannot decide if I should do this or not
BeachMommy2Girls posted a topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
So, hi! I'm brand new here. I'm gathering information. I've been to the sleeve seminar, called my insurance, and have my first appointment on Tuesday. I go back and forth about this surgery almost hourly. I am prediabetic, prehypertensive, probably have sleep apnea, have GERD, PCOS, joint problems, and other things. My BMI is 42. I apparently can't lose any more than 10 pounds during this process or my insurance won't approve it. So I can't even try to lose on my own or else I'll have to start over. The earliest I could have the surgery is mid July. I'm scared of after surgery. I'm scared of complications. I'm scared of regretting it. I'm also scared of losing 2/3 of a major, vital organ. I'm very scared of the health problems that I'm headed for if I don't do this. This isn't really about what I look like - I don't want to have a heart attack in front of my kids. I don't want to die. But I also don't want to have a lifetime of complications from the surgery. I'm not good at decisions. -
Band revision to Sleeve or mini GBP
Ondrea Tye replied to tfrdrix1's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
I had a lap band too and it was horrible! I kept throwing up the food since it got stuck and I still didn't lose wieght. I got polyps in my esophagus and had to have them cut out. With the MGB I'm now losing! Yea! No complications and I felt no pain. Again it may be different for you. For me I wished that's what I did in the beginning. -

Pros and Cons of Gastric Sleeve Surgery
lisalisa5678 replied to MelissaRose24's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I have not had my consult yet.. but I will on the 14th. I have not told anyone except my daughter, my husband and one coworker.. its no ones business. I am doing this for me. Yes I am worried about all the complications I am reading about. But the alternatives are so much worse. I have always struggled with my weight. I have tried everyone only to gain it all back and then some. I want to be there for my kids. Here's to your health!
