I've been trying to lose a bit of weight before my surgery (six month wait due to insurance.) I've been reducing my calories and even started upping my Protein. This morning I realized that if I lose more than 22 pounds during my supervised diet, my BMI will drop below 40 and I wouldn't qualify for surgery. I "only" have one co-morbidity and my insurance requires two if you're BMi is below 40. Although I'm thankful insurance will cover it (and I've met my out of pocket maximum due to gallbladder surgery), it sucks that I could be penalized for being successful. So I guess I'll set a goal to lose 10-15 pounds until my paperwork goes in, which will either be end of July or end of August. I'm not sure when the insurance asks for a six month monitored diet if six visits with the NUT counts or if I have to do seven. Anyone out there know?

Question for those who are 18 months post op
wishinghoping replied to wishinghoping's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
What are white carbs? I know she cannot eat white sugar in any form so I don't think that's caused her gain. She gets horrible "lower gastric response" very quickly. We were in a coffee shop one day and they put sugar in her coffee instead of sweetner. She knew within about 5 minutes. It's actually the type of thing that's making me really think this whole process through. All the talk about foaming and sliming with the band pretty much ended that consideration. It sounds like the way you experience hunger now is a healthy way. Enough to trigger the desire to eat, but not enough to be driven by it. -
Question for those who are 18 months post op
MacMadame replied to wishinghoping's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Yes! I have some links here to threads on another board from people one, two and three years out. People talk about their metabolism like it's a thing, another organ. That makes my anal, engineering-oriented head hurt. :001_tongue: Your metabolism is a measure of how many calories you burn over a period of time; it's just a rate. Your rate can be average, below average, above average, excellent, poor, etc. But it can't be broken, messed up or dead. Yeah, I know... no one cares. :lol0: I do think that a lifetime of yo-yo dieting can slow down your metabolism. But it's not fixed in stone. We can influence our metabolisms for the better or the worse. I have definitely seen that I can't eat as many calories as the formulas say I can. But that's always been true. It just seems more true now that I'm older. Is my metabolism that much worse? Well, in my 30s, I lost weight eating 1200 calories a day and doing aerobics 2x a week. I lost about a pound a week until the last 10-20 lb. Now, in my 50s, I was eating 800 calories a day and training for a triathlon. And losing 2-3 lb. a week until my calories went up. I'd have to do math to figure out if I'm losing slower or faster or the same as when I was in my 30s. It feels slower, but I suspect it's about the same. -
2 stories of complications with the band
shellyj replied to shellyj's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
i found a third story different scenario. Thanks for all the replys! I have had problems with the band from the beginning! 2 days after the Surgery I was admitted back into the hospital! I could not even keep my own saliva down. After a week in the hospital I had lost 25 pounds and of course I could not even have a drink of water! All I had was an IV. When they took a picture of the band it was not quite placed where it is normally on most patients but they felt that it could work! For the first 2 months I was on mostly liquids and soft foods. All together I have lost 45 pounds! I have never been able to keep down chicken no matter how many chews I chew. I have vomited almost everyday since I went to solid foods, 3 months after surgery. I don't think I have lost alot of weight because I will eat ice cream many times after I vomit to soothe my throat. At first I thought it was me, maybe I was eating too much or not chewing enough. Then my best friend had the band done it April and she is DOING GREAT!! We can sit down and she will eat more than me, same kind of food, and her band is tighten and mind is completely empty and I will still vomit. So I realized that the band is just not working for me! This had caused me to have bloody ulcers and I am on a double dose of previcid. The Drs have decided that my band needs to come out. I was hoping they just revise it but the Dr says there is no guarantee he could do that! Thats why I have decided on the RNY. I refuse to go back to my old weight. For all you bandsters to be: my Dr says that my case does not happen very often! Like I said before, my bestfriend is doing great and she hasnt vomited once! Best of luck to everyone!!!!!! -
3 weeks out and hungry
quilter replied to tanya811's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'm three weeks out tomorrow and I'm on pureed foods. I'm following exactly my Dr's directions and today I was starving. Plus my weight loss has stalled. At this point I could cry -
Hi I just begun my journey and decided lap band is best for me, I have a BMI of 54 (ugh), going through Kaiser to have procedure done and insurance say's I'm covered, checked 3 seperate times now to make sure, DR is writing my referral for the surgery once I complete the introduction class in a few weeks, began working out riding excercise bike 8-10 miles a day for 40 min and jogging in pool for another 20-30min evry other day, and started 1200 calorie/day diet hoping to drop some lbs in advance to get the ball rolling and get used to whats instore, been cutting my food into tiny pieces, and chewing to mush to used to that, I've had enough of being fat Anyone else gone through Kaiser or can offer what I should expect in coming weeks, I do know I will be required to lose 10% I was told of current weight, is this true I have read some posts that drs just want you to make an effort and lose what you can before surgery, basically what am instore for in coming week, tests, physc exam? etc thanks

Hi! I worry about things too, so completely understand. I was dreading the pre-op, just knew i couldn't do it. I have seen that Dr.'s all have different kinds of pre-op diets, so you will need to get your Dr.'s clearly explained. I email them all the time begging to have something forbidden, like tomato soup! lol I do not know if HG is considered a condition linked to our weight or not, sorry. I know i do well if i avoid lots of carbs. I would ask your Dr. Let me know when you start if you need a cheerleader!

Welcome Mudbug! It looks like the Dec 19th bandsters are right about the same place when it comes to weight loss. I know that I don't want to lose wt too fast and have a lot of loose skin, but at the same time my vanity wants to be thin immediately!! I guess I can never be happy!!

Went for check up today and Dr. said I was clear to do whatever I felt like no restrictions even go back to work. I am an RN so I have a 50lb weight requirement and he said go back whenever I thought I was ready he would sign the paper. Nice. I think I will stay off for the next 4 weeks just to use up some of my sick bank time!!!!! I started out at 265lbs on surgery day (I'm only 5'4") down to 254 today!!!

Even though I just had surgery on Monday, I've already had a non scale victory! When I logged today's weight into my fitness pal, it said because I had lost more than 10 pounds, they had to recalculate my goals. I know my calorie goal was over 1300 (which I thought was a bit much) but now it's down 1240. I'm totally psyched! I'm not logging my food right now because I'm just on full liquids. I'm nowhere close to the amount of calories I should be having, so I don't see the sense in it. I love this app!!

The body retains water for all kinds of reasons. No doubt you are not gaining fat. Just hang in there... Its going to be a bumpy ride! My body is doing the same ind of thing.

Im right there with you friend. I went on Birth control and gain 4 pounds in a couple days and then stalled for a month. Last week I finally lost 2 pound of that and then today up a pound. UGGHHHH<, but is impossible to gain weight on 600 calories a day I keep telling myself.
-
Don't be down on yourself!!! 60 lbs is a huge success and something to be extreme proud of. I'm not sure how much more you have to lose, but know if you keep it up, the weight WILL come off!

The 5-Day Pouch Test was written for Bypass patients. Bailey was a bypass patient. The pouch she refers to isn't exactly like ours(bandster's). But, the concept is close enough the formula works for me. I've done it twice now and although I seem to lose 4-5 lbs, I always gain it back since it's mostly Water weight loss. She doesn't recommend a low calories input during these times but of course, it's hard to get a log of calories in if you're band is adjusted properly. Good luck and for me the 5-Day Pouch Test is a good way to reset my mind and body for losing weight. tmf

I am noticing patterns in my weight. It goes something like this weigh morning 241.6 weigh mid morning 240.9 weight night 244.4 Weigh morning 242.2 weigh night 243.6 weigh morning 240.4 weight night 244.2 weigh morning 241.0 weigh night 242.6 weigh morning 239.4 weigh night 241.9 weigh morning 240.6 and on and on and on... I am losing only one pound a week some weeks, others (like this week) I lose up to 4 pounds. Even though my weight fluctuates greatly daily, and even throughout the day, there is a weekly pattern of losing. My lowest weights occur about 2 hours after I get up. I like knowing what my body is doing, so I weigh a lot. Sometimes I just get on the scale and stare at it, because it has been soooooo long since I have seen it this low. I pay attention to the lows, not the highs. My goal each time is to get lower than my last lowest, which happens about every 3 to 4 days, sometimes by only a fraction of a pound. It works for me. Point is, for me anyway, weight fluctuates tremendously. BTW, the day before my TOM, I gained four pounds.

I was just curious if anyone on here has never needed a fill and was able to lose their weight.

Thank you for your honesty. You see I was always one of the pretty ones but struggled with my weight to stay at that acceptable weight. I lost the battle recently and I do not like this feeling. I am a self pay and not what most people would deem as requiring wls, but my doctor and I know the truth and this is an option for me so that I do not tilt more toward morbid obesity. I too am tall and carry my weight or should I say I dress to flatter my fat. But I am ready to make the change and go back to that place we both know exist only to the thinner people. Thanks

16 Months Out, Just A Little Update.

Lord, I'm an exercise freak.. and have lost a lot of weight and I cannot stand Banded Wendy. To each their own. -
Don't give up! It took me a lot of fills before I got restriction. I know we want to lose all our weight like yesterday, but slow is much better for you. Remember that you will have times you lose inches not pounds too!
-
Hi Jini, chances are, it will start working for you soon. Trust me when I say that I don't know if you will lose weight. I've lost 13 pounds since April, so that is a chance that you might be a slow loser. I know that there are few things as frustrating as having weight loss surgery, then not losing any weight. I understand the frustration and the feelings of failure that come with slow weight loss. Do not let the scale dictate to you your sucess. I know, easy words to type, but for your own sense of sanity, you must find some other way to measure your sucess. I strongly suggest starting your list of Non-scale victories, your NSVs. You don't have to post them, but I find it is very helpful to look back at them, and I know that other people find them helpful to look at as well. I wish I could make it all better, make it so you had losses in the numbers like you are looking for. But all I can tell you is that you are not alone. As hard as it is, you are not alone.

My hubby currently has a lap band and will be sleeved this summer. He is a truck driver as well. Your going to LOVE the sleeve! My hubby gained all his weight when he was OTR, fortunately he's local and home every night now.

So, It's been 1 year 8 months since banding. About 4 months ago, I started to have some issues not keeping anything down, went for tests to make sure...ALL is good. However, they had to do an unfill for the tests and I still don't have the money to go back to get a fill ($150 each time since I'm self pay). I've gained 18lbs back and I'm feeling awful about it. To the point that I noticed I went back to all my old eating habits I know that I can get back on track, just need some encouraging words from anyone out there that has been in a similar situation. Anyone?

I'm down 27 lbs and am no longer obese! Just overweight. I haven't been overweight in about 8 years - I've tried for years with diets and extensive running and nothing seemed to work. I am so grateful for this sleeve. Normal weight here I come for you!!!!

Researching The Sleeve And Signs From The Universe
barrbdoll commented on ShapeShifter's blog entry in ShapeShifter's Blog
I too am having my weight loss surgery done in Mexico. My company specifically excludes weight loss surgery for whatever reason yet they will pay you CASH to quit smoking!! It's crazy!! The researched WLS for almost 8 years before making my decision to get the sleeve! I am so happy that I waited. Like you said.. the timing just wasn't right but now everything is aligning and nothing is stopping me! Off to Mexico I go.... April 16th is MY day!!! Best Of Luck!!! -
Relax, it takes some of us months to finally get restriction. Like Missy said, it's normal. It sucks, but it's normal. Took me 4 months to finally get enough restriction to start losing weight. It will come, just be patient and follow your Drs orders. tmf
