One Week Ago Today & So far So Good
60Sandy replied to miss_malis's topic in Weight Loss Surgery Success Stories
You are correct. My surgeon did recommend the bypass but of course said that the decision was ultimately up to me. I did go into the meeting with hopes of the sleeve but without any knowledge of the heartburn complication. My frustration is that some days I don't have any heartburn whatsoever and other days I do. I think it has a lot to do with what I eat but the surgeon kind of negated that theory. Hmmm. -
Confession time! Please judge me, I need it.

You're very welcomed. I'm 4 weeks post-op from by pass surgery. I'm allowed puréed foods. My 6 week follow up is on the 15th and I should be advanced to food then. It's been a heck of a journey. I had horrible head hunger the first week in a half to two weeks. But it passes. It takes a bit for your head to catch up to your body...but it will. Just every day try and stay focus. Keeping a journal helps me. I can visibly see what I'm taking in. My issue is fluid intake. Not taking in enough. I can get my proteins in fine but liquids I struggle on. So hang in there. The head hunger should pass. I get up every day and say a prayer and try to do the best I can. I'm down 42 pounds and feel so much better. You'll get there...I promise. Just follow your doctors orders. They aren't just to make this successful for you they are also to help prevent serious complications. You can do this! [emoji846] -
Gastric sleeve disaster
MissKay replied to carolinessss's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Okay I have to take both sides of this, and please don't take it as me being rude. I truly feel for you, because that is extremely unpleasant, scary, and just the worst nightmare that any of us could imagine. I'm so sorry you had to go through all of that and they haven't reached out. On the flip side, there is always that risk. We all go into it knowing there could be that risk, or even of other complications. It does make me question the validity of the doctor. I do fully agree and am disgusted that they haven't even shown any concern or followed up. Granted there's not a whole lot they can do now, but it's worrisome that they haven't done that to at least show good faith. Hopefully the doctors you're working with back home are taking good care of you and have a plan to get you back up on your feet and going. I highly recommend writing a review about the doctor and clinic here and other places. One thing's for sure, it'll help others at least be more aware of the doctor and his practices. -
I started purees tonight with some mushed up black beans and broth...hoping for no musical complications. Lol

Two months out, 70 lbs down!
bleonhardt replied to bleonhardt's topic in Weight Loss Surgery Success Stories
Of course! I woke up after surgery with a twisted stomach. Less than 1% get this complication and I had to be the lucky one I guess! lol They finally figured it out after one night in the hospital and I still could not hold down liquids so they did a barium scan and saw the twist. They do not know what causes it and it took two more surgeries and a total of 6 nights in the hospital to fix it (stent was put in during the third surgery) and a fourth surgery to remove it. But it was left in for 2 months so my stomach healed open thank goodness!! -

bleonhardt replied to bleonhardt's topic in Weight Loss Surgery Success Stories
Sorry I am late responding! A twisted stomach is where after the sleeve is done the stomach twists to the point no liquid or food can go through it one it leaves your esophagus. So all you do is vomit everything you ingest! This complication is less than 1% of all the WLS surgeries I was told and very rare. Lucky me! They do not know who or why you will have this complication (I think I should play the lottery now!) and they have to get creative on how to fix it since it isn't even really written much about since it is rare. I had a great team in the hospital who were able to come up with a solution and after three more surgeries my stomach has remained untwisted!! But this is a reason people should consider when they go to Mexico to have surgery because if you had this type of complication how would you pay for treatment or what would happen there? Just a thought! -
Band to sleeve one surgery or two?
Bandy2sleeve replied to My3angels031703's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Anne, I was told that I never should be taking NSAIDs with the band either because of what it does to the upper stomach with the concentration being to much for the smaller stomach to handle and leading to complications. I will personally never take NSAIDs again after seeing what they did to my mother. She developed stomach ulcers from over use and it led to ulcerations of her stomach and she died from it. Sounds like you are just going through the adjustment phase with your GS? Can you not go back to your surgeon or dietician and perhaps get some tips to help you through this part of your journey - especially with your acid reflux. Hope things improve for you soon, as it sounds like you are struggling a bit at the moment? -
how do you know you are ready?
Moonmovingsoul replied to mombland's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
If all goes well I'll be having surgery August/Sept. I'm mom to two kids 7.5 months and 5. Every day I'm back and forth as I make my way through this process. My original hope was to have the sleeve but due to severe GERD I am not a candidate. I'm terrified of RNY from 15 years ago hearing horror stories. But reading more and more I realize that doctors have really perfected this surgery, and the risk of me having a serious complication from obesity is higher than the surgery in general. I have lost and gained 150 lbs in my life. I need something to stop the yoyo, I need something to keep me healthy, I need this tool to make me stay accountable. I need this to stop the horrific GERD that keeps me up at night, despite meds. Repeat repeat repeat everyday -
Will insurance approve if I had lap band in 2010 removed
MissKay replied to Nanaoffour's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
If it was removed due to complications like that, and you check off all the qualifications for this one, I don't see why not. However, it's something to discuss with your PCP and maybe even call your insurance provider directly and have a discussion with them. It's not like you had it and just removed it because you 'felt like it'. It was making you sick, and that's not a way of life that anyone wants to live. One would hope that wouldn't be held against you. -
Considering Sleeve Surgery in Mexico
MissKay replied to VDH's topic in Mexico & Self-Pay Weight Loss Surgery
I don't mean to be rude, and perhaps you're not meaning it this way, but this feels like a scare tactic. See below for why I disagree with this immensely. So yes, SOME doctors won't know what in the hell they're doing. If you're honest and open with you PCP BEFORE you have the surgery, they can prepare, educate themselves, and express any issues/concerns. There's a slim chance you'd have to change PCP's to get the follow up care you need. However, Dr. Illan and his team provide a list of blood work to have done and at what intervals. When those intervals come around, I let my doctor know, she orders the tests, I get my blood drawn, she lets me know if they're within normal range or not. It's easy peasy and isn't even related to anything bariatric when it comes to my insurance or anything. It is entirely dependent on how flexible your PCP wants to be. If they're not willing, find one that is. You can get the follow up care you need, it just might take some dedication and research PRIOR to going to ensure it's all lined up. That aside. I had my surgery with Dr. Illan on June 13, 2016. Before they made the move to Oasis. I'm actually jealous they weren't there when I went. Even so, the hospital was great, the staff was great, he was fantastic, and my boyfriend was taken care of every step of the way as well. I got better treatment and care from them and their staff than I've ever experienced in the US. I'm terrified of hospitals and was scared about going under as I never had before, but they eased me through it and got me to the other side. Now I'm sitting here at 199lbs, and 49lbs away from my goal. I don't regret it one bit, other than wishing I'd done it a couple years sooner. If I ever needed anything again in the future, you can bet I'll be going to Dr. Illan and his team again. I had no complications. I experienced a bit more pain post-op within the first 3 hours of surgery than I expected. Some people say they experience none. I, however, did have some and I have a VERY high pain tolerance. So this surprised me. Once they found a good pain medicine and coupled it with anti-nausea, I was great. Once I was released 2 days later, I didn't ever have to touch the pain meds I left the hospital with. Of course do your research and talk with your regular doctor beforehand, you only hurt yourself by not doing so. -
Today I met with the surgeon who said he wouldn't even consider doing the sleeve on me unless I did a 24 hour PH test first. (I have GERD). If he doesn't like the results, then my only option is the bypass. Anyone done the test? I would rather not do the bypass only because of all of the additional possible complications and that it is a more invasive surgery. Because I'm borderline (5'3.5" 229.6lbs) and young (30) he is hesitant to do the bypass, but said he will if i am convinced i want it. I'm super frustrated because my goal weight is only 2 lbs less than what i currently weigh, so I thought i was super close to being able to have my surgery. SunshineUnicorn

Miraculously I have my surgery day!
Heath55 replied to lf1227's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
Hi! I see that unfortunately they haven't even added 2017 let alone months in the support by month section and I saw this thread. I had the band in 01/13 with little success and have been fighting with my insurance company for MONTHS then Thursday I was approved, Friday saw my doc and now Tuesday is my surgery. I'm kinda nervous after going to my pre-op class Monday and remembering all the misery I endured (I had complications). I wish one of you were ahead of me to be the Guinea pig instead lol. 5 days away..... I am nervous wreck!
1poundatatime replied to SleevePanda's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'm two weeks away from my surgery date and I'm super nervous too. I've never had surgery, worry about the unlikely chance of complications, stressing about the travel, wondering what people will thinking when they see me drastically loosing weight, and wondering if I shouldn't just try again to did it on my own. Like many of you, I am currently healthy, but at 258 lbs and a scale that only seems to move one direction, I know I won't stay healthy. I want to be there for my kids and be an active participant in their lives for a long time! -

I'm only 5 weeks out as of today, and despite having complications in the beginning I know this is something that was best for me and feel better already than I have in years. The Christmas lights thing made me chuckle because I was thinking this next Christmas I'll finally be able to use a ladder without constantly feeling like a step is going to go out at any second because I'm too heavy for it...lol. Congrats on your progress, Heather! -

Heh, the likelihood of cancer due to obesity is dependent on the individual. There are plenty of ppl that get cancer and are skinny. So then what? We all have our reasons. The complications are very real. It's always helpful to read the experciences of others since knowing the stats mean nothing, it's just numbers on a screen or rattled of my surgeon. I don't even think these are "horror" stories, its sad that we delineate these experiences as "horror" its the lives of people that took the same decision we did and didnt expext to be worse off. -

Somebody is always going to have horror stories. It's the internets. You have to weigh out all the options and decide what is best for you. There's a report today on increased risks of various types of cancer due to being overweight. Do I fear complications down the road or other potential side effects? Of course. But I also know my being overweight was marching me towards things potentially much worse. Do your research and do what's best for you. Here's the story on cancer risks: https://www.theguardian.com/society/2017/feb/28/increased-risk-of-11-types-of-cancer-linked-to-being-overweight-researchers-warn -

I understand she's living without a stomach now. There's another young woman on insta too who had a twisted sleeve, that the only solution, when other interventions didn't work was also the removal of the remaining stomach. Here's her blog, it's the last post. I think ppl say oh it's a rare complications but honestly it doesn't matter when it happens to you https://curvyfitfabuloss.wordpress.com/ -
angry and betrayed
Berry78 replied to brightfeather's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
Yes, I would be angry too. [Hugs] Do you want a devil's advocate? (The up side to things?) If not, don't bother reading below. 1. Now you know your system doesn't like painkillers, so you can take steps to prevent constipation during your sleeve journey. 2. It is recommended to not get pregnant for a couple years after bariatric sugery, which would have run you out of time anyway. 3. Just because you can't get pregnant doesn't mean you can't be a parent. 4. You are getting the painful procedures out of the way so you can focus on feeling better going forward. 5. No pregnancy means no required weight regain. 6. The sleeve will be a simpler surgery, with fewer potential complications long-term. -
3 days out, remorseful, worried and depressed
orionburn replied to Jamesarwin's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Very common to have trouble with sleep following surgery. I was stuck in the hospital for 6 days because of some complications, so by the time I got home my sleep schedule was absolutely destroyed from being woken up every 2-3 hours for tests. Once I was home I would wake up every night around 2 a.m. and could not go back to sleep to save my life. I did better by giving up on trying to fall back asleep and just went downstairs to watch TV. Watching old shows tends to put me out so I would eventually doze off. It took a few days but eventually my sleep did get better and started making it through the night again. Just avoid trying to tire yourself out by doing too much around the house. What did you experience that made you feel like you had dumping syndrome? Typically that isn't something you should experience with a sleeve. Was it just a matter of drink/protein not going down easy? -

Leave denial from work?
hermione53 replied to Mandat89's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
Short term disability and FML run concomitantly (at the same time), but are two different things. As your STD limit is being used up, your FML is being used up. Even though the OP used FML and not STD to care for mom, having STD time left does not mean the FML clock hasn't run out. It's complicated. OP, I know you're ready now and waiting totally sucks, but I'd get your STD and FML paperwork ready for surgery the first day that your FML clock starts again in June. Have you discussed this with HR and asked for an exception to be made? It sounds like you had some really unfortunate stuff happen this year. Also, do you have accrued paid time off? I had to have my surgery in two stages (one was the lap band removal). I was out for just a week and applied for neither STD or FML (because you have to use your own sick/ vacation time for the first week before STD kicks in anyway). I think I used vacation time and just my boss and I knew about it. For the second surgery, I took off a month and applied for both STD and FML. Just a word of advice to everybody out there, it's a good idea to elect LTD (Long Term Disability) during open enrollment. It costs extra, but it's not terribly expensive and it's totally worth it if something catastrophic happens. <<end lecture>>. -
So, I've never tried blogging before, but ive had complications from surgery and so I decided to give blogging a try as an outlet....so here it is https://wlsjourneysite.wordpress.com
