Bad habits before and after WLS
BabySpoons replied to omrhsn's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
Bad habits Before... holding in burps and gas because it wasn't ladylike. To my discomfort. After... letting it loose to ease my discomfort. Before...wearing all black to disguise my size. After...wearing all black because I think it's chic. Before... picking up fast food every Friday night. After....picking up fast food every Friday night. (Bariatric friendly) -
I Am Not Really Seeing The Weight Loss I Was Expecting
Smanky replied to Hey Man's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I barely lost in the first two weeks post surgery and promptly stalled at the end of week 2, where I proceeded to stall frequently throughout the entire first year. My rate of weight loss post surgery was the same as my rate of loss doing calorie counting pre-surgery. I never had the big-loss-numbers some others have. But it still worked, I reached goal at around month 13/14. Despite not losing fast, it worked. It's done what I needed it to do, it stopped me self-sabotaging and continues to be the adult in the room when it comes to me and food. Losing slowly and steadily is ok! So long as you stick to the plan, the weight comes off. If you're an emotional eater, get yourself a bariatric therapist who can help because the primary thing this surgery does is help with portion control. Everything else is down to us, the calorie counting, the staying on plan, and getting on top of any mental issues that have contributed to obesity and may cause trouble down the line. -
Hey so I was sleeves Sept 8 2021. In total I lost 68 pounds. I feel like a complete failure. On too that I’ve gained 10 pds of that back. The body dysmorphia is so real right now. Its like I’m falling into a depression I cant get rid of. I dont feel beautiful anymore , I hate walking past mirrors. Im constantly comparing myself to others. This weight-loss journey is more mental than anything. And it is overwhelming me. Please any tips or advice , I would greatly appreciate it. I’ve been working on my water intake, cutting back on snacking and intermittent fasting hopefully something helps me.

I Am Not Really Seeing The Weight Loss I Was Expecting
BabySpoons replied to Hey Man's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
That's got to be one of the best answers I've heard yet. I have been on a bazillion diets in my lifetime and never stuck them out for that long. Except for intermittent fasting for 2 yrs. and added strict Keto the second and only lost 40 pounds. That was when I decided to get the surgery but it did keep me from becoming a full on diabetic. And this ^^^^^ I can stick with it if it I'm seeing results. It only stands to reason we will quit if we don't. -
Nervous about gastric sleeve
Sleeve_Me_Alone replied to Breezy_'s topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I had intermittent heartburn/reflux pre-surgery. Usually a few Tums would take care of it, occasionally I took a Pepcid if it got bad, I was never on long term treatment for it (PPIs). Post-surgery I took Prilosec preventatively for 6 months. Now I'm nearly 2 years post-op and in maintenance - I do occasionally get heartburn but it is less frequent and less severe than pre surgery. -
Eating out for the first time
pintsizedmallrat replied to LindsayT's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I think the first time I actually ate something resembling food was about a month out; I had some scrambled eggs and grits, was able to eat just a few bites of each. You may find it easier at first to order individual side items as opposed to a full meal (I'm 22 months out and still can't even finish the sandwich from a kids meal let alone the apples or whatever that come with it...and no, I don't eat fast food regularly before anyone jumps all over me.) Purees with protein are hard to pull off in a restaurant, unfortunately. Most people who are not bariatric patients are not big fans of textureless bowls of meat slop. It will get easier, though, when you move on to soft foods and no restrictions. -
The "honeymoon" period
maintenanceman replied to RobertM2022's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I found that I needed more and more calories to be satiated as the months passed. By 6 mo post-op, I just couldn't maintain a very low calorie diet without becoming ravenously hungry. And, my weight loss progressively slowed down each month until the weight loss petered out at 9 months post-op. I reached my goal weight, losing 100% of my excess weight. I currently eat 1800-2000 calories a day and have maintained my final weight for five months so far. While my hunger has returned, it is nothing like it was pre-op. I feel very much in control of my hunger, and I find it difficult to overeat... even when I want to. And my body generally craves healthier, cleaner foods vs. the garbage fast/junk food that was the staple of my diet pre-op. I suspect the reason people regain is they increasingly indulge in slider foods... crackers, chips, cookies, etc... and start drinking their calories... sugary drinks, alcohol, ice cream and such. I think it would be very hard for me to eat enough "real" food to regain. My restriction is still very present, but it's easy to defeat it by "eating around" my sleeve. -
No hard & fast rules. It just depends on you & how your body reacts. Personally I split up when I took my meds. Like one multi vitamin in the morning & one at night. Just make sure to take your vitamins after you eat otherwise you may experience nausea. Having a sip or two of a liquid to swallow a med is generally okay after you’ve eaten or to wait a much shorter time after (like 5 or 10 minutes) & then go back to your usual waiting time. Of course if you are drinking a meal/snack (shake, soup, yoghurt drink, milk, …) swallow your meds as you drink. Hope it’s an easy transition for you.

What was your "Last Meal" before starting the pre-surgery diet???
BigSue replied to Jjohnson1971's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
My last meal was Marco's pepperoni pizza and cheesy bread. That was actually my last two meals -- I got a whole pizza and order of cheesy bread and ate half of each on each of my last two days before surgery. I planned out a whole week of food funerals, but the catch was that I had to stay under 2,000 calories per day (I lost 70 pounds in the 5 months before surgery by limiting calories). The half pizza and half cheesy bread was my entire 2000 calories for each of the last two days. The rest of the week (which I know because I recorded it all in MyFitnessPal) included: Ribs and sidewinder fries from my favorite local restaurant Steak and onion rings (the steak was a ribeye from Walmart and really disappointing -- I wish I had splurged on a better steak) and half a piece of cheesecake from Cheesecake Factory (660 calories for half the slice!) Red Baron pizza and the other half of the slice of cheesecake Bacon cheeseburger that was voted the best burger in the city and a Klondike bar Pizza and wings from Pizza Hut I... really liked pizza. Before surgery, if I so much as saw an extra eating pizza in the background of a TV show, I would get an insatiable craving for pizza. Once a week, I would fast all day so I could have a whole Red Baron pizza as my one meal for the day (their brick oven pizza is underrated in the frozen pizza world). After surgery, I made some attempts at healthy pizza (e.g., chicken crust, low-carb tortilla crust) but eventually came to realize there were much tastier and healthier things that I would rather eat. I haven't had real pizza since my surgery (almost 3 years ago) or anything even resembling pizza in the last couple of years and, oddly enough, I don't miss it. -
I’m on soft foods to and I get full fast. I barely eat an ounce or two each meal. One shake takes me almost an hour to drink. Sometimes I drink half and then drink the other half later. I meet my goals each day but it takes me 3 to 4 tiny meals and a snack through out the day.
-
Wish I were that lucky, I went home the following day. Which I thought was quick haha, same day would have been awesome! I’m on to the soft foods stage now, but I haven’t felt “full” yet like I would before, also haven’t really gotten hungry, it’s strange, but I do get sore from time to time when I drink too fast or eat too fast
-
Thanks me too. I’m sure it will pass. It only comes on if I get up to quick or move wrong. Other then that I’ve been very happy with my choice. It was so fast. She did it robotically and I went home same day. Went right back to work 3 days after.

Hey All! I am exactly 1 week post op today. Sleeved 5/22/2023 I am currently on full liquids. Allowed cream soups - watered down with water/skim milk. I feel like everything is making me cramp. As soon as it goes down, I’ll cramp for like a second and it goes away. Has anyone else experienced this? Is this the normal healing process? I don’t know if it’s me taking too much in too fast - I will literally wait a few minutes to try more and still cramp. I’m sipping. Taking things slow but… cramps! This may be completely the norm and something that gets better with time.. just thought I’d ask the community and hear your experiences. Thank you so much!

Food Before and After Photos
loras68 replied to GreenTealael's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
Hi! Had my VSG May 19,2023. I am looking forward to transitioning to puréed diet. I was told I could have tuna and egg salad. Any suggestions on a mayo to use? I tried to eat Campbells Cream of Chicken, I probably ate it too fast, I experienced a mild dumping. Now, I am worried about the fat in normal mayo. Any ideas are much appreciated! -
Help I can't eat anything!!
ChreeMiriah replied to str8outtajerzy's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I’m in the same boat and I’m 6 months post op. I eat about three bites of something protein or really anything, veggies too and then I immediately throw up. Doctor has me on multiple medications for this and Valium to relax the muscles in my stomach. I also had to have two emergency surgery’s 2 weeks ago because my sleeve was stuck to my gallbladder with so much scar tissue so they thought that was it, but then a day after that surgery they saw that my gallbladder was bad and they had to remove it immediately. Still no change and I feel so sick all the time because I’m barely getting 300 calories in daily. I loose a pound every other day. I know for 99 percent it’s a miracle and worth it, but I have always been the 1 percent when it comes to my health. I have lost 80 pounds since Dec 19, 2022, but I feel like it wasn’t the right way and I’m worried I’m loosing way to fast. Anyone else suffering like this because my doctor says it’s unusual and I can’t find anything on the internet. Thanks for all the helpful replies in advance. If anyone out there understands my pain feel free to reach out to me through email- marsgirl22@gmail.com -
Bad habits before and after WLS
Tomo replied to omrhsn's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I don't really buy clothes (I should lol My pre WLS habits were pretty generic ones that we all can relate to. Like mindless eating, eating when not hungry, constant snacking... Etc. The only thing I haven't changed is that I do still eat late at night but what changed is what I eat at night. I eat strawberries, an apple, blackberries... Etc (instead of chips) if I get hungry. The main bad habit after WLS is, even though I don't eat much, I am still buying way too much food. My fridge, freezers, cabinets and food bins are stuffed to the gils. In fact, I buy way more now than I did before WLS. I used to have an empty fridge because I was always eating out: fast foods or restaurants. Now, I will cook something, make several servings and freeze it. It's great, yummy, convenient but I keep buying new food before those are gone. I hate wasting food too so I have so many items that are past the best buy date. It's terrible lol. -
Right away I was always able to drink as fast as I wanted and how much I wanted. Although I had little appetite, I didn't "feel" restriction until I got to solids. It's when you can't take in water that there's a problem (example, stricture). You're good. Congrats on your surgery.

I was able to break a lot of bad habits after WLS but I've developed new ones along the way. I'll share some of mine and I'm keen to hear yours too. Some of the Bad habits before WLS: 1. Spending a lot of money on junk food (fast food, potatoes chips, chocolate etc) specially when I'm at work. 2. Procrastination when it comes to exercising and doing something about my weight. I've reached a stage where I've decided to just let myself go and do nothing about it 3. Avoiding social gatherings if I knew that photos will taken or if it involves any sort of physical activity 4. Eating before going to bed and while watching TV I'm glad to report that I've broken all of the above and I couldn't be happier. Bad (not necessarily) habits after WLS 1. Spending a lot of money on new clothes. I can't resist buying new clothes if it fits or I know it will fit me in a month time or so. Yesterday I went to the mall to buy tomatoes from the supermarket and ended up buying 2 polo shirts, 1 shirt and new jeans 🤣. I got the tomatoes of course. 2. I hate looking at old photos of me and I really don't like the way I looked in those. I didn't have this feeling before. 3. I take a lot of selfies and photos of myself now haha. I guess I'm making up for past time 4. I'm not telling people the whole truth when asked how I lost the weight. I only tell them about diet and exercise and even show them my latest cycling records but nothing about the WLS. If only told a handful of people about my WLS because I thought they could benefit from one. One of my friends is planning his WLS next month. 5. I don't like how certain parts of my body look after losing a lot of weight (I don't hate tho) like my armpits which have turned into caves, the loose skins on my belly, my scars. I guess I'm a bit self conscious about those.

September surgery buddies!!
Hope4NewMe replied to Slwhurst's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Glad you are feeling so well so fast! The liquid diet was the hardest, hopefully you can move to more interesting food soon. The time does go faster than I expected though. Great job on the weight loss! -
Food Portions - 6mos post op
Jeanniebug replied to cookiecutter's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
I wasn't given any guidance for this specific point... Just that between the time I'm on solid food up until forever, I'd be going up to about 8oz of food. I'm not there yet and I'm about 7 months post op. I've found that some days I have more restriction than other days. And some foods - like meat - I can eat less of, in one sitting. I still wait to drink until 30 minutes after I'm done eating - or longer. And if I eat too fast, I tend to hurt. But, I don't eat as slowly as I probably should. I mostly measure out my food and I do not go back for seconds. I try to be really mindful of how full I'm feeling and I stop as soon as I think I might be starting to get full. Overeating is (thankfully!) still painful for me. I eat from little 8oz bowls and salad plates. -
I'm on day 7 today of the liquid diet. There have been times it has felt hard but ive managed to stay with it. My surgery is on 1st June (next Thursday) - it cannot come fast enough. It is hard but we are all almost there ♥️

I am doing the liquid diet right now. It is very very difficult. I never heard before of 4 weeks liquid diet. It is really worrisome to me when all nutritionists, doctors and all hospitals differ in their opinions and their requirements. Some do not require any diet but for the couple of days prior to surgery, some allow 1 meal per day, others want all liquid, some ask for one week liquid others for 4 weeks. I understand that these decisions are based on BMI, etc, but why such high variation in requirements? To top this, my nutritionist placed me on all liquids diet two weeks ago and today when I met with my my surgeon he said I can have a small piece of chicken per day and I can replace the orange juice with 2 small bananas. I am really confused so I will continue the total liquid diet. I make it through this thinking that if I fail I will let them know, I will talk to my nutritionist. I also hope that I do not fail in the week prior to the surgery because they need to have a clear view. After all we are all humans, nobody is perfect and I am also sure I will not be the only patient in the world that had a mishap! I am angry, hungry and hopeful for the best! 😀 This is all I can do! Oh, by the way, warm chicken clear broth has been a life savior for me the couple of times when I was ready to fail! I bought these on Amazon, they are called Herb Ox sodium free granulated (chicken and beef) bullion. I add my own salt. They are yummy and a bowl of that will stop your craving and hunger. Sigh…Surgery cannot come fast enough! 😀

Any April Surgery Dates?
Changing Chris replied to rokse23's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Had my sleeve surgery on April 18. Still feel hungry all the time too, but get full fast now when eating the soft foods. This threw me off at first because my fantasy before surgery was that I'd never feel hungry again, but what actually happened afterwards was the opposite! On my first week post op appointment I think my Dr. thought I was accusing him of giving me a bad sleeve.. HAHAHA! Today is the day I get to start having "regular" foods as tolerated. I'm very excited and nervous at the same time. Funny thing is, I don't even know where to start, so all I have in the house to eat is the stuff from my soft foods diet! 🙂 Hardest part for me is keeping track of my protein and fluid intake as I have a very busy work schedule and don't always log right away. I know this is a week point and I'm working on it. I lost 19 lbs pre op, and 27 lbs post op so far. Tomorrow is my one month post op follow up. Their scale usually adds a couple extra lbs than mine so I'll have more official numbers tomorrow. Good Luck Everyone! And thanks for posting, the topical conversations found on this site truly help some of us get thru! -
Really hoping I haven’t sabotaged myself
Nepenthe44 replied to justsillyme's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
No. That's nuts. You have a BMI of 86, you could be eating half a pound of cashews for lunch and you'd still lose weight. Not as fast as you are now, but at a good clip. That being said, the macro spread (ratio of fats, carbohydrates, and protein) of cashews isn't great. If you're only getting 700 calories a day, you need to be prioritizing protein and nuts aren't really a protein food. They're mostly fat. Again, eating them will not stop you from losing weight, but you need protein to ensure that the mass you're losing trends toward fat mass and not lean mass. Depending on what you're eating throughout the rest of the day, you might want to switch the cashews for a protein-dense food most days. -
As far as getting liquids in, I'm finding it harder now that I'm in puree stage. For each meal I have to wait 30 minutes before and after, as well as the 30ish minutes it takes me to eat. So for 3 meals I'm losing 4.5 hours of drinking time. I drink as fast as I can without overdoing it, but I still seem to come up short a lot.
