You can puree virtually anything. Thai Chicken as a favorite, Chicken Alfredo (sans Fettuccini), even did Mongolian BBQ. Pulled pork. Any protein you like, with a whatever little sauce you like for moisture, along with a veggie you like, just pureed. I was eating like a king, if a king ate 2-3 ounces of good food without chewing. Things like mashed potatoes were not in my program, nor were typical refried beans (too much fat, I learned later they make me dump anyhow). Focus on protein first, then veggies. Puree is easy! Good luck, Tek

Dietitians need to ask enough questions to understand where you ARE, both with your ability to prepare your own food and your overall understanding of nutrition. It sounds like you and your dietitian are not on the same page and she is assuming you understand things they are not explaining well. There are a lot of ways to reach 60g of protein in a day that will be too high in fat, calories, and carbs to result in weight loss. Sometimes I feel like the heavy, heavy emphasis on protein does us a disservice, especially when there are so many high-protein "convenience foods" that are high in fat (and calories) to cater to Keto dieters (hello, Quest cookies! 230 calories! that's not a snack, that's a meal). Protein is a big component but in the absence of other, concrete advice about WHAT to actually eat, if you don't have a huge knowledge base of nutrition, it's easy to get lost.

I agree it is amazing the differences in the programs. Pre-op 2 weeks but split. 1st week I replace 2 meals with liquids but can eat 1 meal of solid food. Second week only liquids. Also calorie restriction of 800 max per day. Liquids allowed are protein shakes, skim milk, SF jello, SF pudding, 100% fruit juice (4 oz per day), broth, SF popsicles ,low-fat SF yogurt Post op - Same as above but can add in thinned cream of wheat, and strained cream soups. Expected to last 1-2 weeks but can only be advanced with Dr permission. Food not allowed are drinks with added sugar, caffeine or carbonation, and whole milks Pureed stage - once allowed I can add in scrambled eggs, low fat cottage cheese, mashed beans, applesauce, baby food, and any pureed fruits, veggies and meats. Not allowed is previous list plus fried foods and concentrated sweets. Expected time frame is 2 weeks but can advance as I feel comfortable. Mechanical soft - add in boiled eggs, fish, tofu, ground lean meat, low fat canned chicken and fish, canned fruits (no syrup), soft fresh fruits, soft cooked veggies, cooked cereals made with milk, beans, and toasted whole wheat bread. Not allowed crunchy foods, rice, popcorn, high-fat meats, high -fat starches. Can't advance with out Dr approval. Solid foods - life long Add foods in one at a time to check for tolerance, add in whole wheat toast, whole grain cereals, wheat tortillas and whole wheat pasta. Still not allowed whole milk, high fat foods, fried foods, popcorn, rice, and white flour. -

Mine is: Pre-op: 1 day before surgery - clear liquids only, ie water, clear broth, fruit flavored drinks, plain/flavored gelatins, smooth fruit iced or popsicles, protein water. Possibly 2 ounces of milk of magnesia. Post op hospital: diet cranberry juice, fortified protein gelatin/drinks, protein supplement drinks. Stage 1 (wk 1-3): low-carb low-fat protein drinks pre-made or powder, non fat or 1% milk, unsweetened soy milk, sugar-free non-fat pudding, sugar-free low carb yogurt or plain kefir, strained reduced fat cream soup, strained broth soup, sugar-free crystal light, gelatin, popsicles, herbal tea. Stage 2 (wk 4-6): eggs, soft tofu, protein drinks from stage 1, low carb Greek yogurt, plain kefir, cottage cheese, other soft cheeses, sugar-free non-fat pudding or custard , reduced fat cream soups pureed chunks, pureed soups, non-fat refried beans, pureed Tuna or chicken salad, pureed soft cooked non-gassy vegetables, unsweetened applesauce, pureed soft fruit with no seeds or skins. Stage 3 (permanent lifestyle) : continue to take in fluid and protein goals, gradually introduced solid foods one at a time, chew all foods until smooth and the consistency of applesauce. Then it gives a bunch of foods to limit or minimize for lifelong healthy eating, but it's mostly non brainers like fried foods, high fat meats, ice creams, french fries, granola bars, large portions of fat etc. It does say avoid gas forming vegetables unless they don't bother me, or stringy vegetables like celery and asparagus unless they're cut into small pieces. -

Thank you. I was wondering the same thing (did they really take part of my stomach out?) I’m still drinking everything - but I can drink soup, broth, water, juice, protein drinks - all without any issue. Which is great, I suppose, no reason I can’t get my fluid intake in. I was expecting an ounce or two and I’d feel like I couldn’t take another sip. It scared me a little that I could drink so much without an issue. I need to be better at monitoring or I’ll take in too much. I’m hoping I’ll notice a difference when I move on to puréed foods next week. I’m excited for the refried beans with cheese and the protein pudding. Lol -
low carb pre op diet
liveaboard15 replied to KimA-GA's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
So of course every surgeon is different. For me they did not want us to go into that keto flu. So we were told to avoid those protein shakes with no carbs. instead they recommended a certain one which i forget how many carbs they have in it but had a decent amount (not 50 of course) also to not avoid caffine as that would make the diet even harder. But yea it sucks. Gotta get use to it. After surgery your carbs will need to be a bear minimum. Currently at 4 months post op according to my guidelines max i can have is 30 and its no longer an issue. -

For sure. It's actually surprising to me just how different they seem to be? Here's mine: Pre-op: Two weeks long -- Only 3-4 protein shakes per day and unlimited clear, sugar-free liquids (which can include SF Popsicles and SF Jello). Post-Op Stage 1: Days 1-3 -- Only Sugar-Free Clear Liquids Stage 2: Days 4-7 -- Add in Protein Drinks, Skim or 1% Milk. Can also use Unsweetened soy or almond milk. Stage 3a: Days 8-14 -- Add in Cottage Cheese, Yogurt and/or Ricotta Cheese Stage 3b: Days 15-30 -- Add in Pureed Meats, Beans, Low Fat Cream Soups, Cooked Pureed Veggies. Eggs allowed, but must be soft. Fruit not allowed. Stage 4: Days 31-60 -- Low Fat Solid Foods, focused on protein first and introducing only 1 new food at a time. Fruits and veggies okay, but should be cooked. Best to avoid nuts and seeds. Stage 5: Lifelong -- Add in Raw fruits and veggies as tolerated. How does that compare to everyone else? -

You might want to consider that a lot of people have problems with eggs early on. It sounds weird to me because when I have tummy problems, it's one of the only things that I can tolerate. I'm also curious about the fruit? My program does not allow fruit until 1 month post-op. I assume due to the sugar content and the possibility of dumping syndrome. Anyway, I wanted to make sure you have some other options ready in the event some of your choices aren't well tolerated. One thing I figured I'd try is tuna or chicken blended with fat free mayo as a way to make "tuna salad" or "chicken salad". -

Thank you for those ideas! I can actually see the carrots and cinnamon as being yummy as well as the cheese and fruit. So that gives me something I can work with. I guess I was just imagining something like a full meal being blended at once and that did not sound good at all. If I take pieces of it like fruits or veggies, I might be able to do that. Refried beans and guacamole sounds ok too. I probably can live on mashed potatoes but even though it's an allowed food, it seems like it wouldn't be that healthy. I had no idea about the protein powder not going into hot food, so thank you for that too! -
53 lbs in three months is on the high end of someone at your starting weight. hair loss is very common. It's temporary - usually lasts about three or four months, then grows back. Just keep on top of your supplements and protein to keep it from getting worse than it would otherwise.

Found a new protein drink
kcuster83 replied to liveaboard15's topic in Protein, Vitamins, and Supplements
I drank the Gatorade zero protein drinks after surgery but they tasted so sweet. I drank 1 a day just to hit my goals and haven't had them since I have been able to eat normal. The blue was the least sweet and my favorite. I never even tried any other ones, just the 1 Isopure and the Gatorades. -

Alpine Punch...I tried it, grape, and I think a green apple. I could barely stand drinking them. I did just to get in the protein, but I'd never repurchase. I liked the Premier Protein Clear drinks which have 20 grams of protein before surgery but couldn't drink them right after post-op. I still have a ton of them at home. -

I tried the red (forget flavor) of the premixed Isopure and it was horrible. Everyone loves them, but I couldn't stand it. They are crazy expensive too. Glad I only bought 1 to try since it went in the trash. I don't need them now, I have no problem hitting my protein goals but in the beginning I was always looking for new drinks and/or ways to hit my protein. -

My paperwork says I can have eggs and soft tofu for pureed, so I'll probably try to soft scramble eggs with cheese. Small curd cottage cheese will probably also be my friend, as I already love it and plan on making it sweet with pureed fruit like peaches or savory with mustard or hot sauce. Refried beans thinned with chicken broth, Greek yogurt, and mashed cauliflower or potato cheddar soup with added unflavored protein powder are some ideas. I once ate at a place that had pureed carrots with cinnamon and maybe I'll try recreating that. Maybe shredded to hell crock pot chicken??? Just remember if you add protein powder to anything hot, it will ball up and curdle, so you have let it cool and slowly mix it in. -

I also start my pre-op diet on the 5th but my 2 weeks are split. The 1st week I can have 1 meal (high protein, low carb ) per day but the second week is only liquids. I also have to keep my calories under 800 per day - yuck. You sound very much like my twin. I have 4 different kinds of premier shakes,5 yummy sounding keto shakes, several different types of broth and canned soups that I can strain, pudding, jello and I'll buy yogurt when it gets closer. I also have a clever fox journal that has spots for pictures and measurements to keep me motivated. I'm as prepared as much as I think I can be. Thinking and preparing keeps me busy and makes the time pass faster. I get more and more nervous the closer it gets, but excited too. Can't wait to have a new me -
I feel exactly the same way, most of the time. Like something is stuck in my chest. That is, when I don't feel nauseous, hungry or with heartburn. My stomach is this bloated, bruised and bloody mess. I can't stomach the protein shakes and I'm not getting neatly the protein I'm supposed to. I went home for lunch today and yesterday, because I couldn't eat anything in the cafeteria, and I really, really didn't want to go back to work in the afternoon. But I did, because I had to. On the plus side, I'm getting enough liquids or close to what I'm supposed to, and I'm tolerating tomato soup and very thin oatmeal reasonably well. So that's something.

4 years post VSG and still not hungry
Saxons replied to Saxons's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I know right? I thought it only happened to gastric bypass patients. My surgeon has explained that, although I still have a stomach (albeit a tiny one), I can still have rapid stomach motility. And the suspects are high level sugars (explains the muffin), and high protein without carbohydrates added. And not chewing my food thoroughly, so my stomach doesn't dump a whole chunk of protein at once. I try to follow all the directions, but after 4 years, you slip up now and then! I had blood tests done 2 weeks ago and they were perfect. Its just that the dumping, combined with the dry retching is miserable. I wish I had known... -
Thank you so much for that information! How do you figure out plan exclusions? I work for a large bank and in their little healthcare “breakdown” it shows Bariatric surgery is covered (in-network with “distinguished centers”) covering 80% after co pay/out of pocket max. With that I am assuming that because the “brochure” states it’s covered that means that all three options my job provides for medical insurance will cover it. My job only lists very minimum criteria (must have BMI over 35, dietician, Psych, etc.) nothing specific, no exclusions listed. I would love to figure all of this stuff out BEFORE I pick an insurance company/plan, but when I call my jobs HR they tell me I have to contact the specific insurance company and tell them the plan & when I call the insurance companies they state the need a “group number” from my job and cannot give me any information until they have it. I can’t even look for specialists/surgeons because no one will even tell me who’s in network. It all just seems crazy to me that no one can tell me ANYTHING.. I feel lost and stumped as to where to look next… do I wait for open enrollment and HOPE that there may be an HR rep that can give me more info or do I have to blindly pick an insurance to go with and hope that their criteria/exclusions aren’t too crazy? Or would it be the same criteria/exclusions across the board because that’s what my job puts into place? I probably sound crazy but I just don’t seem to understand the whole process. It seems like my job, the insurance company AND my specialist/surgeon will all have their own criteria to go by… I just wish I could get all that information (or atleast some of it) before hand… thank you for listening and anymore insight would be much appreciated! Congrats with almost being done with your pre op journey!! That must be so exciting!!!! Are you getting the sleeve or bypass? I’ll be doing the bypass because I have GERD. I’m terrified of the endoscopy ( I hateeee needles) the best of luck on your continued journey!!!

Much happiness and good thoughts to everyone who is having surgery this week! I'm officially 1 week post-op RNY (with hernia repair)! Here is what I've learned this week from my surgeon, my partner (who is a nurse) and myself: 1) If you are in pain, take your meds. There is no shame in taking pain meds for a major surgery. Everyone's pain tolerance is different and I have been in a fair to high amount of pain since surgery. I'm not sure if it's the RNY plus the hernia repair that is causing this level of pain, but I took whatever pain meds the nurses gave during my hospital stay (there was a combination) and then every 6 hours after I was discharged for the first 3 days and now I'm only taking them when I feel pain, but I still feel pain, so I'm still taking them. 2) Rest. I'm a person who is always on the go and it's been difficult for me to just REST. It's driving my partner (the nurse) crazy. He keeps reminding me "It's only been ____ days! You just had two major surgeries! Rest please!! Sit down! Take a nap!" Don't feel guilty about resting your first week (or weeks) home. 2) PLAN PLAN PLAN. Once I was on full liquids I was shocked at how low the protein value is per BARIATRIC SERVING and quickly realized if I didn't plan what I was going to eat and when I was going to eat it, this will get out of control really fast. Yes, a container of protein greek yogurt has 20 grams of protein in it (a 5.3 oz container), but if you are only eating 2 oz servings at a time, you have cut your protein down to 7.5 g per serving. I've added Isopure to almost everything I eat and I do 5g Isopure per 2 oz food which adds another 4g protein. 3) It's extremely difficult to get your 64 oz of water in. Pre-surgery I was like "that will be easy." Nope. Not at all. First, your new pouch will only hold a sip or two at a time. Too much and it will hurt. And once you are eating full liquids or purees, you have to stop drinking 30 min before, 30 minutes after (and another 10/15/20 to actually eat your food) and if you are eating 3-5x a day...this becomes a full time job. I know it will get easier, but it has been overwhelming right now.

I’m not going to lie, I’m slightly jealous of those of you already returning to work/feeling great postop! I’m officially 1 week post op and I feel like I’m never going to be the same 😩 I have a constant feeling of something being “stuck” in my chest/throat and it’s driving me crazy! I’m also struggling to get in the recommended amount of protein each day, shakes are disgusting to me now, and I feel awful after finishing one.. I also am having a reallly difficult time getting in all of my meds, taking Horse Pills with a SIP of water is making the “stuck” feeling even worse. I honestly thought that I was so ready for this and it was all going to be a breeze, but I wasn’t even close to prepared… I don’t regret it, yet, but boy am I close.

Bariatric friendly pain relievers
fourmonthspreop replied to fourmonthspreop's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
It's such a shame because nsaids were the only thing that worked for me! My doc said if I am in terrible pain I can take them very sparingly but I get the sense it's something I shouldn't really be doing. But man this is no good. I will try some icy hot maybe although I don't think it's a muscle thing. I seemed to have fell right on the bone and it's sore. Heat helps me a lot but I am looking for something I can swallow or put on so I can continue with my day. It's definitely tough but I appreciate the insight. I'll check those other options out. I've heard that the premixed Isopure is really good. I haven't tried them. I did get some unflavored Isopure powder and tried it before surgery in some soup, and I didn't like it at all. That's a lot of protein for a clear protein drink! -
