Day 8 post-op update, band to sleeve revision on 8/19. Feeling better every day. The first 5 days were so hard. I knew they would be hard, but it was so much worse than I anticipated. Not at all like my band surgery, more like my bad c-section 13 years ago. One thing I had not expected was the anxiety, I was terrified the whole first week that I was going to have a bad complication and have to go back into the hospital for months. Surgery was Monday, Friday afternoon I turned a corner and started feeling better. Now every day is noticeably better, drinking more, walking further and easier, moving better, less pain and less anxiety. I finally have some hope for the future! Keeping all my fellow August sleeve buddies in my thoughts and prayers for successfull surgeries and recoveries!

Was your band removal and revision surgery done at the same time?
bewell replied to Cleo's Mom's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
Just had a revision band to sleeve Jan 13. It was done in same surgery. It was my preference and also of my surgeon. It took 3 hours. 1.5 to remove band and 1.5 for sleeve. There was a lot of scare tissue around band, the most doc had seen but he got that bugger out. I am also 64 and was concerned. I had a few rough days but at 8 days out now I'm doing oK. Still a little sore and tired but getting around OK. Slept a lot the first 4 days and had a few other issues but so far, so good. Would be happy to answer your questions anytime. Best wishes on your process. -
Was your band removal and revision surgery done at the same time?
Collieh26 replied to Cleo's Mom's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
I just had revision surgery on 1/30, band to sleeve! I had it all in one surgery as well as a hiatal hernia repair! I was under for about 3 hours! All went well! When I asked my Dr why Drs sometimes do it in separate surgeries he had 2 answers, first of all it depends on the pt and comorbities, how long can someone tolerate anesthesia ? Since just having sleeve surgery you are under for about 1 1/2 hrs! The second answer was interesting he said if he did in 2 surgeries he would make more $$$ which is so true ! Also in addition the pt has to take 2 separate LOAs if working! So in the end I would look for a surgeon who did it all in one surgery! good luck -
Was your band removal and revision surgery done at the same time?

Cleo, I understand, it was really hard for me to decide to do the revision from band to sleeve. I am also a self-pay. I had to rob my 401K to pay for it. I thought about it for months and then researched it and followed all the blogs for a few more months. All the while trying to lose weight but only gaining more. I was miserable. It really came to the bottom-line that there was no way I could lose the weight myself and as I aged being obese was causing more health problems. I know my husband was ready to retire and we wouldn't be able to travel or do fun things, and he was concerned he'd have to take care of me for years to come. It is elective surgery but at my age, I really feel I had no choice but to do it. I was scared to do it but even more scared not to. But so far so good. No complications with the sleeve. A few rough days but at 4 weeks out, I'm glad I did it. There is no way I could do this myself. I'm committed to do this. I have to. I don't really have any words of encouragement but at our age I think we have some wisdom to know we only have one more chance to get this right and be healthy. We know the dangers of being obese and watching our joints fail. We are more aware of the lies we can tell ourselves about having just one bite of something sweet. I could still ride a bike at 260 lbs but it was getting harder and harder. I could see me in a wheel chair before I reached 70 along with hip and/or knee replacements and diabetes. The future was looking pretty grim. I'm glad I decided to get the revision to a sleeve. I know there is still a lot of hard work ahead of me. For the rest of my life I'll have to watch what I eat. I have to make serious life style changes. (just read the blogs of people with any WLS who gained back all the weight, it can happen) I have to do this or my final years on this planet will be miserable. -

Was your band removal and revision surgery done at the same time?
georgiare replied to Cleo's Mom's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
Yes, my revision was done all in one surgery. My surgeon said it was the most common surgery she does. @@giugiu37 my insurance paid for the revision because when my band slipped I regained most of the weight I had lost, so I had to get it out either way and the weight gain showed that I would not be successful without restriction. -
Good Morning Everyone!! Approved for band to bypass revision on 9/26, I found out when I called Aetna on 9/28, pre-op appt schedule for 10/4.. my advocate told me to start my liver shrink diet Saturday (yesterday) which will put me at a 6 day advantage on this 2 week liver shrink when I go to my preop appt.. and a possible early October surgery date if available since I started the liver shrink diet already..I'm excited!!!!

Where in Indiana are you from?I live in New Palestine just east of IndianapolisI live in Pendleton and work for Roche Diagnostics. I'm waiting on my appeal for revision to bypass to be overturned. What's your story? I originally had my band placed in 2008, I had some early success losing about 50 lbs but after the first two years I got tired of fighting it. I resorted to eating around it. For the next 4-5 years I did weight watchers and a bunch of other diets (blah) with some success but the weight always came back plus some. My last straw was I went into my PCP last December and my weight was up to 263 (only 20 lbs shy of my pre band weight). I called that day and made an appointment with my surgeon. We discussed options and the RNY seemed the way to go. I didn't have any trouble with insurance, after my 3 month supervised weight loss, they submitted on a Friday and I was approved on a Monday. -
Day 3 post op and can drink liquids so well it scares me
biginjapan replied to CammyC's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Don’t weigh yourself for at least a week after surgery - it is often higher (5-10 pounds) than your pre-surgery weight because of the reasons listed above. Even if you can drink liquids easily, don’t let that fool you. First, your stomach is extremely scarred and healing, so it probably can’t tell you that you are overdoing it. Second, just because you can drink more, don’t. There’s a reason why we are given strict limits - it’s not only for our healing stomachs, but to get used to constantly measure/weigh our food so that we stay on track. My sleeve failed for that reason (I had my revision on 3/3) so I’m being extra careful now. -

A thread for super-sized bandsters - starting BMI over 50?

Hey Muggle I hope you had a nice thanksgiving. I saw in another thread where you therapist is willing to back you up in a revision. I hope that works out well for you. -
I got my band in Dec 09 and I lost 40+lbs but then nothing. Band was tight bc like u I would puke probably 3-4 meals a week. At 211 I just felt like I failed though much healthier than 260. I went to Mexico for a revision to gastric sleeve. The sleeve surgery was 5k and I paid an extra $500 for band removal. Best decision! I am 6 weeks or so out and down to 186 pounds. Good luck whatever u decide!

Valentine's Day Weight Loss Challenge
DeezJeanz replied to vsgSarah3's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Well 1Cor, it DEF will happen, and yes it's a part of the process. But I hope that knowing that we've all been there and survived it will encourage you to just let it happen, keep working out and eating right, you're doing gr8! Just remember how b4 surgery, we gained, not stalled but gained and at least now after the surgery, you know that it too shall pass and Lord willing, you'll be back to losing. As much as we all dreaded it, it's actually a good thing for our bodies to be able to rejuvenate, recharge and reset after such massive weight losses. Although the docs, and praise God for them, had done something to our bodies to help us with significant weightloss, God made this temple and thank God that He won't allow more on our bodies than it can handle! Hopefully I gave encouragement to you and not just rambling on, at least that was my goal. I'm a revision from sleeve to bypass due to 2yrs suffering from vomiting due to severe acid reflux and a stricture and guess what, 3 weeks out exactly, my body stopped losing! It just has to happen:) and now I'm going on my 5th week and started back losing, not that that's my ultimate goal now but I still want to lose a little bit more. Take care and hang on and in there with us. We have your back!! -
What was your "Yep. I'm getting WLS." moment?
KeepCalm replied to GranadoM74's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Mine was - 9 years ago when my dad died in 2007 of a massive heart attack at the age of 53 because he had diabetes/severly overweight (close to 400lbs) and he was a heavy smoker... I decided that I didn't want to die at 53 as I was already close to being the same weight as him and I was 23 years younger. I wanted to live to be able to play with my nephew and teach him everything my dad taught me and wouldn't be able to now... So, I decied on the lap band because the sleeve wasn't available to me back then. I had decent success, I lost weight - which was my goal - wasn't a complete success as I didn't lose 50% of my weight but I still lost some. Now, I want to do the revision to the sleeve and continue my weight loss and continue to become healthier, so that I can continue tplay with ALL my nieces and nephews now - three of which my dad never got the chance to meet and I don't want them to miss out on knowing him through me as my sisters had a different type of childhood with him then I did. I was the first and his subsititue boy - so I learned everything - they were the girls -

Why does the sleeve fail?
Heather B replied to GottaDoSomethin''s topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Mine worked for about a year and then I went crazy. I had an extreme amount of stress and was always a stress eater; I overate. After the sleeve I could no longer eat large portions but I could eat anything. Nothing made me sick or disagreed with my sleeve. I began eating entire bags of candy in a day mutliple times per week. I gained back 65% of my weight in a year. My sleeve was done becuase I was too high risk for the RNY and he did not think I could lose all 300 lbs with one suregery anyway. I was always to have a second surgery but with the gain, I had no choice, there was just an added element of embarassment. It boils down to not following the rules. For the first year, I was vigilant and tracked everything and then it all went out the window. I have now been revised to the RNY and hope to have dumping syndrome (but do not intend to test it). I beleive I have learned from my mistakes and now know how serious my sugar/junk addition really is. I can NEVER touch those things again. I also must "diet" for life and track my food. -
You all are in my thoughts and prayers. I am new to the forum and I had Revision surgery April 25 (lap band to bypass). It is a struggle but the reward will be great.

I recommend Dr. Carlton at Lonestar Bariatrics. He does all of the surgeries! My surgery date is 5/20 and I will be revising from the sleeve to the dswitch.
