I had my bypass about 2 weeks ago and wanted to get some experiences from people who had bypass (not sleeve). Are you able to eat hamburgers at some point after bypass? (It’s a common dinner item in my house and my family loves Five Guys). And how much do you usually eat before you feel full? Thanks!

I have a virgin RNY, not a revision, but I had almost no pain with this surgery. Part of me wondered at first if he actually even did the surgery... most people getting a revision do get an immediate relief from GERD (not all - but most), and additional weight loss is around 20 lbs, but I'm sure that depends on your BMI and how hard you work at losing weight. I'm sure you can find people who've lost more than that. -

this is my first post. Hey YALL 😀 I'm Bridgette I had the lap-band placed, corrected, removed within 3yrs of each other back in 2013. Had it removed in 2015. After gaining most of the 80lbs I loss back, I had the VSG in 2017.Since then I have been stuck at 260 for several months, I think the lowest I've gotten with the sleeve was 240ish even with diet and exercise.. the scale is not moving. I'm electing to have the bypass because of the severe GERDS and also to aid in my weight loss. I must admit after ALL of the surgeries I've had. I'm terrified of this one. I keep hearing about the pain being worse than any other. I wanted to get some feedback from others who have had similar surgeries. Can you all post before and after weight loss, and how you all handled the pain with this surgery.. My nerves are bad. Am I over thinking this or are my fears valid? Let me know. I’m sorry you thought I don’t trust my doctors. I didn’t mean that at all. They give you a list of all different things that can happen to you as a result of the Gastric Bypass surgery, and I did not see anything about bone loss in your jaw. I don’t know that it would have changed my mind about the surgery, but it’s good to know that this is also a possibility. I trust my doctors and I am still glad I had the surgery. -
Severe Gerd/esophogeal dysmotility. Revision vs nissen or just hernia repair?

I posted about this on the sleeve forum before. I developed GERD after my sleeve and was able to control it with one PPI a day until the end of 2020 where it's increased to two PPIs, 1 H2 and tums all day. Had issues with vomiting, nausea, stomach and chest pain. Difficulty swallowing. Sore throat since December. Had an endoscopy 3/3. Lax LES causing GERD, gastritis and a nodule in the antrum of the stomach that appears to be benign but will be removed in an endoscopic ultrasound in June as a precaution as it has a small risk of turning cancerous later on. Gastroenterologist referred me to my bariatric surgeon believing revision is needed. My surgeon wasn't sure on revision because I have lost all my excess weight with no regain. I have only been in maintenance for 4 months though. He sent me for a barium swallow. Had the barium swallow and the radiologist found esophogeal dysmotility and a hernia that the endoscopy had missed. Radiologist said I will either need a nissen fundoplication or revision to bypass along with hernia repair When I called my surgeon's office to schedule a follow up the nurse said something about maybe a hernia repair would be enough which left me feeling confused. I told her I want do whatever has the best chance of not having more complications or needing more surgery in the future. I had my galbladder out June 2020 after sleeve June 2019 and really just want to be healthy with no more surgery. My follow up is on Tuesday. I am not sure what my surgeon is going to recommend. From posts here it seems nissen isn't the best option for sleeve patients. Would hernia repair be enough or is revision to bypass the best option? I just don't want to be getting hernia repair and then still have reflux be a problem due to my esophagus and end up needing a revision later on. -

Thats one of the many reasons why I chose gastric bypass. I have been borderline diabetic many times and im so scared of developing type 2 diabetes.

Wow!!!! That is amazing!!! So happy for you! Still battling my insurance on my revision but I have hired an advocacy group to help me. You are doing awesome!!!! Congrats! If I get a second chance with this, I hope to do as well as you ❤️

I had bypass revision on Jan 11,21 which included a common chanel resection as well as making the original pouch smaller. I have lost 62 lbs and am doing amazingly well post op. No vomiting, nausea, or heartburn, I still have 3 weeks left of taking a daily prilosec but then I will be just on my bariatric vitamin and calcium chew. I was able to stop taking my only prescription medication for high blood pressure. I go to the gym about 4 times a week and my back pain has decreased significantly. My comfortable goal is to loose 40 more pounds but would love to loose 45 just to make sure. Sent from my SM-G965U using BariatricPal mobile app

The bypass interferes with absorbtion of a medication I depend on to stay alive. It would have been super risky for me.

Gastric Sleeve Revision

Hi i am getting a revision from sleeve on may 27th!! I will be going to Limarp with Dr. Pompa and highly recommend. I had my original sleeve done there and had no complaints. Well except for the horrible dry heaving for 20 hours after but that was not there fault. The care and service was great which is why I decided to choose them again. The revision will be $7000 which includes everything except my flights. let me know if you have any other questions -
By BMI I most likely qualified for bypass, however, I recently had some autoimmune issues and was put on Prednisone. With bypass prednisone is not allowed ever so I ended up with the sleeve.

The Sleeve vs Bypass?

I have PCOS and few weeks back I was in the same dilemma to choose Sleeve over Bypass after reading some of the sleevers here having lost the same weight to reach their normal BMI. But then some more research showed how Bypass patients in the long run have it little more easy to maintain the weight than sleevers. With PCOS I wanted 1 surgery to give me the maximum benefit, don't want to return back to the OR either! Ofc there's no guarantee what may happen in future and how many surgeries one may need. Plus many Bypass patients have also struggled with weight gain while many sleevers have kept it off. In the end this surgery is a tool and we definitely will have to work hard at it. But I feel more comforting with the Bypass decision than have a *what if* moment in future. Plus the risk of hernia and GERD is more with sleeve than Bypass. So I am in a happy place with the decision by mine to go with Bypass! -

I opted for bypass. I have a family history of diabetes, high blood pressure, and my BMI was over 50. And I had a huge issue with hunger and not eating healthy. The malabsorption aspect of bypass was a major factor. So was the dumping syndrome.

I’m an April surgery 👍 I had my bypass last Thursday 4/15. The pain has gotten a ton better each day. I’m struggling w getting the fluids in. I was supposed to start shakes 3 days ago and had some trouble with my acid reflux so didn’t have room for them and try to get at least 1 bottle of water a day. I hate water and I’m sick of crystal light. Chicken broth about gags me now. I cant lay down because I feel like someone is sitting on me so my backside is quite sore. I’m exhausted and have a horrible taste in my mouth. I finally just sipped on pickle juice and swished it around for flavor because I am dying waiting for my appt on 4/27 so I can eat anything/taste anything different. Mentally I have been ok until today but also am having diarrhea cramping and the whole day has kinda sucked. Just wondering if anyone else has found a way to deal with this. I realize I should have probably posted this somewhere else now but can’t copy/paste for some reason w my phone lately. But thinking maybe someone else that’s had recent surgery will have some ideas! ❤️ -
I really wanted the bypass but it was medically contraindicated for me. I was super disappointed, but I went ahead with the sleeve. It's worked out well, I lost all the weight I needed to lose and had no major complications. The sleeve turned out to be right for me. So if GERD is an issue for you, the bypass may be the better option. Just do your research so you understand the pros and cons.

It was normal for me too. Liquids may not give you the inflammatory tightness that you experienced with VSG because the inflammation (if you have much) will be lower in your digestive system instead of close to the esophagus. Because the pyloric sphincter is *usually* bypassed when you are revised from a VSG to RNY, you *may* not feel the same restriction as with VSG. Your restriction/full sensation can also feel different.For me it’s the difference between tightness in the chest with VSG and heaviness in my lower abdomen with RNY. However I’m happy to note that both sensations made me want to stop eating. So there is a safeguard if you pay close attention. Congratulations on a safe surgery & happy recovery ❤️ -

there are fewer complications with sleeve, but on the other hand, complications with either surgery aren't very common. And if you do have them, most (for both surgeries) are minor and "fixable". I personally would not let that make or break your decision because most of us sail through these surgeries just fine and don't experience complications. However, since you have GERD and choose the sleeve, know that you have about a 30% chance of that getting worse. That was the reason I went with bypass instead (and I've been very happy with that decision). Of course, you may be one of the 70% for whom it does NOT get worse. I wasn't willing to take the chance, but you might be. -
That’s a great point! I’ve actually heard a lot of additional benefits with the bypass so I’m feeling more confident here. I’m guessing its normal to question your decision when surgery Is less than a week away!

I'm not sure if it's the same with a revision vs. a virgin bypass. I felt restriction once I moved to solid foods, but I have a virgin bypass, not a revision, so it might be different. I've heard other revisionists say they didn't feel as much restriction with the bypass as they did with the sleeve, but on the other hand, they do feel uncomfortable when they're on the verge of eating too much.
