    Choosing Surgery Date

I was offered the first available date. I took that first option. Otherwise, you really should have complete control. You have to get things in order, time off work etc. Basically you and your surgeon should be able to find a date that works for both of you.

5 months post op hair loss

Ride it out. Keep hitting calorie and protein goals and just be patient. I had really long hair. I cut it shorter at about 6 months out, and even by then, I was getting regrowth at the roots. The shorter cut (and not pixie short, just to roughly my shoulders) made it much less noticeable. To me, at least. I'm not sure anyone other than me, my husband and my hair stylist even noticed.

My goal weight put me at a BMI of about 23. I’m at about 19.6 now but was a little less. I’m an outlier & initially lost about 137% of the weight I had to lose. I maintained that for about a year. At the end of last year, my HRT dose was increased & I had to increase my protein intake (absorption issue) & I put on a good 2 kgs in the same month. I’ve lost a little of that but have maintained that new weight for about 6 months now making my loss about 132%. I look at BMI as a guide only. I chose my goal weight based on a weight I was always able to get down to in the past - I used to bounce between 60 & 75kg until menopause. Too many factors can influence what is the ideal weight for you. Age, skeletal frame, gender, level of activity & muscle mass, health considerations, etc. Plus, & most importantly, you have to be happy & able to enjoy your life. If the dietary restrictions or exercise regime you have to follow to maintain a lower weight are too restrictive & limit how you want to live your life it won’t be sustainable.

    Avoiding sugar substitutes?

I cut out a lot of sugar (real or sugar substitutes like monk fruit) from my diet & avoid as much artificial sweeteners as possible. I know there are artificial sweeteners in my yoghurt & protein bar but that’s really all & I usually keep my added sugar to around 10g or less. We all need glucose but I get the bulk of that from fruit, dairy, etc. - naturally occurring. I really embraced that period of food tasting excessively sweet period post surgery & just didn’t reintroduce sweet back into my diet. I prepare most of what I eat eat from scratch as I can control the ingredients that way. There are some exceptions like I love the crumbed lamb cutlets my butcher makes & their honey soy pork chops (I make them myself unless I’m feeling lazy). I rarely eat dessert, cakes or biscuits (except for multi grain crackers). I’ll have a small amount on certain occasions like at Christmas so only a couple of times a year. (It’s ironic really because I’m the family dessert maker.) Pre surgery, I always enjoyed something sweet after dinner & every couple of weeks I’d buy a treat or two from a local patisserie on a weekend. But I really don’t miss it now. I can think something may be delicious but aren’t really tempted to try it. But this is me. You have to find the right balance for you & of what you want or don’t want to include in your future way of eating.
  5. Hello! Seeking some help with hair loss. I know it was bound to happen but I’m losing chunks every day. I meet protein goals, take my vitamins. Anything that has helped with some of you?
  6. I’m on a two week liquid diet and it’s been a killer (again! This is my second bariatric surgery.) I can have protein shakes or greek yogurt for my ‘meals’ every three hours. I would be lying if I said I had been perfect throughout this process. I’ve slipped up a few times by stealing a fry off my husbands plate or eating a couple of olives when I was simply sooo hungry. I’m going to have the hiatal hernia repair during my surgery on the 29th and the revision to RNY, as well. The GERD burns me up a lot of the time so I take esomeprazole in the morning and Pepcid in the evening. And thank goodness for Tums during the day!

    Choosing Surgery Date

my clinic gave me two or three choices. If none of those worked for me, I'm sure they would have given me more options (although probably further out)
  8. fed-up

    Two weeks after surgery

I get that sharp pain too 4 days in .I am still on liquids and don't feel full even when I've had a protein shake .Confusing isn't it ?
  9. Hi! I am newly endo-sleeved and moving towards solids now. I was told to stay sugar free, but I truly cannot tolerate artificial sweeteners (including stevia). I don’t have a huge sweet tooth in general, more of a savory eater, but I am wondering if the occasional “real” sugar will harm me that much. In theory, I know sugar is considered an empty calorie, but if I am staying in a significant deficit, wouldn’t that be sufficient? Backstory, I only have about 30lb to lose from start to finish, and mainly wanted the procedure to change my relationship with food (especially portion control) and improve my wellbeing and fitness. Any advice would be much appreciated. Thank you !

    WHAT is this???

Hopefully you are about to call your dr now. I agree with others that you should be seen right away. Perhaps tell them that you are willing to wait to be fit in between patients. Be sure to emphasize that you believe you have blood in your stool and fear that you are bleeding somewhere. If they absolutely say they can’t fit you in ask if someone can at least call you asap to let you know if it sounds emergent. If it does sound emergent ask if you should request any particular dr at the hospital. Of course you can’t always get who you want but sometimes there is an option. Basically just don’t be nice and agreeable and let them push you off. Keep asking questions until you get the help you need. And keep us updated when you have time.
  11. Ive been referred for wls at guys and st Thomas. Im a little confused. So thanks to covid thibgs have changed and i know its a long wait for the NHS. I did the online session with the dietitians and psychologist as group session. Got a f2f at the hospital recently were they did the bmi, bloods medical history and talk to the dietitian. They said i don't have to complete tier 3 as ive done tge equivalent before seeing them. My bmi is 57 so they said it would straight to surgical options. Got sent the copy of the letter they send to your gp with all the blood results and medical and Kings obesity score on and at the bottom it says Outcome - attended f2f, discharge, bariatric mdt Does that mean its going to the surgeons to consider or that i didn't meet the criteria and have been discharged altogether etc etc. That 1 line in the whole thing is bugging me beyond belief. Anyone got any insight into their process or had similar and what was your outcome?

    Post Op: Struggling a little

My plan is to call my dietician tomorrow and see what options I might have. Today I was told by the intern on call to just focus on staying hydrated with water and juice - or whatever I could tolerate, move as much as I can and recommend some OTC meds to try to help things along - beyond what I already tried. Wednesday I start purées and I’m hoping that I can incorporate more options to help keep my system happy.

    Post Op: Struggling a little

Thank you. Today has been rough. My daughter birthday part was today - on the upside not feeling well none of the food was appealing to me so there was no temptation or craving. I’ve pretty much confirmed my problem is constipation. So I’m trying to move as much as I can and drink as much water as I can. I’m not worried about protein or calories until I get things moving - or I talk to my regular team tomorrow. Hopefully I’ll be feeling better by tomorrow and can get back on track.

    August surgery buddies!

Day 3 post op update. Overall doing very well. Not much gas pain. I have only gotten sick once when the night nurse decided it was a good idea to give me crushed Tylenol without any nausea medication. Once we got that under control, I was able to take the medicine with chocolate pudding. I was discharged by noon the next day since I was walking well and holding full liquids down. Saturday was difficult because we had a six hour drive home and the road bumps played soccer with my insides. I'm pretty sore today. Getting my fluids and protein down. I never knew how much I could love SF chocolate pudding 🤣🤣 Walking is harder today, but finally beginning to have a bit of bowel movement. Taking it easy.

    September surgery buddies!!

I haven't started yet but the liquid diet is the part I'm not looking forward to the most. Can you have other things besides the shakes to get your protein? Like could you add some protein powder to broth? I'm not sure what you are allowed to have on your diet but I hope the time passes quickly for you!
  16. Hope4NewMe

    September surgery buddies!!

That would be really hard then! Especially since you don't have the option to not cook the meals. Is it the actual cooking that is where the temptation is? I know you don't have a lot of time left before the liquid diet stage, but could you meal prep for her so that you just have to reheat the dishes? It might help the temptations when you don't have to be around the yummy food as long. Good luck! That would be a hard spot to be in.
  17. Happy Sunday y'all! I leave for my annual trip to Wyoming from Texas 12 days from now and I'm looking for some inspiration! The first day is my longest and for that day and kind of the trip back are really my weak points. Day 1 is 17 hours, I don't have much issue staying awake but I do get bored so give me all your story-type pod casts(I really liked Strawberry Spring and Dark Woods--I'm SUPER new to podcasts so those are the two I stumbled onto). I also plan to get a free trial of audible (I'm cheap, sue me) for a couple of books I have wanted to read but have lacked the motivation. For podcast genre suggestions I enjoy: Vet med True crime Stories-fiction: mystery/thriller/suspense/medical mystery/horror/crime Interesting tidbits of information I appreciate any suggestions you guys can throw my way. I still plan to scour Amazon music's library but figured having a few options to kind of spring board off of will help! Thank you!

    mayonnaise

I take our favorite Mayo and use 1/2 of it and 1/2 plain greek yogurt - choose which ever variation your plan might suggest. Add some protein and helps cut calories. We usually use Hellman’s (the olive oil one works well with this) and occasionally have grabbed the store brand to do this with as well. I have been doing this long before surgery and actually my kids (adults) ask for me to make it that way now. Even use this for deviled eggs. I have also done this with sour cream (half and half) and no one ever noticed. Trust me, my family will point out if anything is “off”.
  19. Feeling discouraged. Sleeve surgery 7/20 and lost 30lbs by 8/3. Started having chest pains and neck pains- turns out to be pancreatitis. Admitted to the hospital 8/7 and got out on 8/13. While in the hospital, I gained 24lbs back in fluid weight because I was NPO for a week so that’s all I could have. I lost 4lbs the first day I came home then about 10 more in the last couple of days and now I’ve gained 6lbs. I haven’t changed anything except added more protein and eating more soft foods instead of liquids, so why am I gaining weight now? I was so excited to see the weight loss but now I’m discouraged because I saw a BIG gain in a weeks time. I spoke with my PA and Dr and both agreed to let me start taking Lasix again but a smaller dose to see if it helps get more weight off because I’m swelling something terrible in my feet and legs. I try to keep my sugar below 10g a day because I think sugar is the culprit but I haven’t had much and the only other thing I can think of is my sodium intake. Any suggestions? Any pieces of advice to keep my head up? It’s so hard because I saw such a quick drop in weight and now I’ve gained 6lbs quickly 🙁

    Is this GERD???

Yeah, I noticed that it's the absolute worst at night. I already didn't have dairy or spicy or rich foods. I can and will cut out the occasional diet soda I was drinking. Caffeine will be tough, but I will do it (I did it once, I can do it again). I've been sleeping propped up the last few days and it does help. I will definitely look at not eating any protein before bed. Looking back, I did that twice while this was going on. Definitely gonna cut that out. There was no buildup to this at all. It just BOOM hit me like a mack truck one night and I thought I was dying. Could it be a hernia? Would that actlike this? Or does this definitely sound like GERD?
  21. I like Dr Weiner too. Don’t follow his diet, too much of a carnivore & can’t give up the animal proteins, but I like his straight forward advice. I agree check out his you tube clips. They’re an amazing resource. https://m.youtube.com/user/DrMatthewWeiner You can post questions which he’ll answer too. I also follow him on instagram. I don’t like artificial sweeteners either (so much information about the negative side effects) & try to avoid them where possible. It’s difficult because it seems like they’re in every damn thing. I know they’re in the yoghurt I eat most days & in my protein bar but that’s really all. Neither are what you would call sweet tasting. I also avoid sugar substitutes & try to keep my added sugar to less than 10g a day. Quite happy to consume naturally occurring sugar lime in dairy, fruit, etc. A lot of my decision was to break any craving or desire for sweet. I’ll have the odd traditionally sweet thing like some dessert or cake but it is very rare & I’m happy to have just a few small bites. In the liquid stage post surgery, I only had one shake a day & ate soup/broths which limited artificial sweeteners to just once a day. After that I dropped the shakes & had yoghurt & yoghurt smoothies instead so artificial sweeteners still only once a day. I should say I make most of what I eat from scratch. It’s the only way to control the ingredients (& avoid processed foods).

    Post Op: Struggling a little

Thank you! This was helpful, reminding me to listen to my body and stick to the basics. I’m hoping once I get to purées and have more Whole Foods to work with some of the problems resolve them selves. I was over my protein goal Friday and about 15 oz short on my water. Today I was over on my water about 20 grams short on my protein. I definitely need to make hydration the top priority, protein my next and not worry quite so much about calories.

    Post Op: Struggling a little

We’re all different but I was barely eating 200-300 calories for the first weeks (I wasn’t given caloric goals). I only got to about 900 at 6 months. You’ve only just had your surgery so take the time you need to reach your goals. My surgeon was happy if I was getting closer & making an effort. If you’re close to getting your fluids in you really shouldn’t be experiencing dehydration but it’s still important to watch out for. Don’t worry if you miss your goal/s one day, as long as that’s an odd occurrence & not a regular one you’ll be ok. Headaches & nausea aren’t that uncommon this soon after surgery. The stress & anxiety of the surgery & then worrying if you are doing the right thing contribute plus you may be experiencing some withdrawal type symptoms too because of the restricted diet. If it persists, & reduces your ability to get your protein & fluids in, contact your surgeon. Many of us experience changes in our sense of smell & taste over the first weeks. Many find the shake they enjoyed before surgery is suddenly disgusting. It can affect your reaction to any food. Some can become excessively sweet or salty. Then there will be days when your tummy says nope don’t like to something you regularly ate/drank. If that happens, avoid it for a few days even a week or so & try it again. Your tummy is just sensitive & fussy while it is healing - I described mine as being like a petulant, temper throwing 2 yr old. Artificial sweeteners are awful. I try to avoid them where I can but they seem to be in almost everything. I loved when foods became crazy sweet & used the time to eradicate any craving for sugar/sweet. I only have a small amount of sugar (<10g added sugar) or sweetened food in my diet (yoghurt & protein bar only). Instead of yoghurt, what about make your own smoothie from protein powders & milk? You can better control the ingredients that way. These things all pass. Just give yourself time to heal from the surgery & feel more comfortable & confident with the changes & how you’re managing them.

    Is this GERD???

Glad you are contacting your surgeon. There are a few things you can do to help alleviate some of the GERD symptoms. Besides the bed wedge or bricks under the head of the bed, don’t eat any soIid protein before bed & don’t lie down within 2 hrs of eating. Cut out carbonation, caffeine & spicy & rich foods. I managed my reflux for years through these dietary changes. I’d only have to take a PPI maybe 5 times a year (when I’d ignore my avoid carbonation rule & have too many glasses of champagne or gin & tonics 😉).

    Post Op: Struggling a little

I did reach out and heard back, there’s a possibility it’s my irritable bowel acting up from all the protein (slowing things down). That can sometimes make me feel nauseous. So I’m starting some Miralax tonight and will continue through tomorrow. I’ll check in with my regular dietitian on Monday. If I feel worse they suggested some Dulcolax - but encouraged me to keep up with the water and as much movement as I can to help. The artificial sweeteners may not be helping either, but my regular nutritionist would be the person to make any changes to my diet plan so I will see what she has to say. Thanks for the feedback it was very helpful!!
