Hi everyone! This is my first time on this forum! My bypass surgery is scheduled for May 14th and I am both nervous and excited! I am starting to have doubts but it’s more about the apprehension of what could go wrong. I could use all the support I can get!!

Wow! I had mine on 4/23 (bypass). I’m getting control over getting enough protein and fluids but my drs are still on this program schedule. I haven’t had any problems past my first night. However, I feel good and wanted real food so I skipped to eating soft foods yesterday. No problem at all! (Except yeah, my stomach gurgles more and I’m way more gassy). I eat fairly slow but I also suspect that I could eat a little faster than they say. Anybody try eating at a “normal” pace? Like not racing, just normal?

May Surgeries - check in!

Hello Everyone, I am a little hesitant to write about my surgery because I absolutely do not want to scare anyone. My surgery was Monday, and my doctor had 2 surgeries Monday morning—a sleeve right before me and then my bypass. As far as the actual surgery, it went well. However, my recovery on Monday and Tuesday was really rough. I had severe nauseous—I was vomiting blood—all the surgeons said it was normal, but I kind of freaked out my husband and the nurses! They gave me 3 different anti-nausea meds before I was able to start drinking water and ice chips. Pain wise was not too terrible—the gas pain is worse than the soreness from the surgical pain. I was not able to walk much on Monday because I was so nauseous and vomited every time I got out of bed. I only took pain meds on Monday evening. Once I was able to tolerate liquid and walk, I felt better—I was also able to tolerate Gas X. My husband brought me a HEATING PAD and it was a lifesaver. I strongly suggest packing one in your bag. I am home now—resting and sipping—no hunger, and I am still taking anti-nausea medicine. Oh and FYI—the other patient who had the sleeve before me—he had ZERO problems. He was up walking around and eating his hospital tray of liquids and went home the next morning. I think everyone has their own story and experience—my recovery was just a little rough because of the nausea and vomiting. -

Hello, First time poster here, having surgery this Friday, May 7th, Gastric Bypass. It's been a year since I started this journey and am so happy to finally be at the middle mark. With the pandemic, it is pretty exciting that I made it this far. Below are my why's. I am so looking forward to being at a healthy weight for once in my adult life, and finally doing something just for myself. It has taken me a long time to finally prioritize myself at the top. Very happy I kept at it and didn't give up. The pre-op diet has been tough. I've been challenged to eat and keep hydrated. In part for not wanting to gain any weight before surgery. Not a smart move as dehydration and low blood sugar has been my experience these last couple of days. I've been finding comfort and support through your posts, so thank you for that! Reading this just 25 minutes after your update! I just submitted everything to my insurance today, and I’m going with bypass. This forum actually what was convinced me, last year, to do bypass. 1. too many stories of revision surgeries after sleeve since your body still absorbs the same amounts of food, unlike bypass. I know it’s not everyone, but I saw too many to make me feel confident in my ability to comply long term without a second layer of help (malabsorption.) 2. Diabetes runs rampant in my family. I’m not there yet but it’s an eventuality I wanted to do away with. 3. Someone above mentioned that bypass is so drastic... and sure, it is, but it doesn’t make sleeve less drastic in comparison. With sleeve, your stomach is essentially amputated, and with bypass your intestines are rearranged. They’re both hard, I just had to pick the “hard” I felt was worth all the trouble. Bypass was it for me. I spoke with my nutritionist today about duodenal switch, and though you lose more weight, you have more vitamin deficiencies and it’s harder to carry a pregnancy, which I eventually want to do. I’m glad you made the right choice for you!

I really appreciated everyone’s input on the sleeve vs bypass question I posted. I did follow my surgeons advice and chose the bypass, I feel it was the best option for me!

Revision from sleeve to bypass 8 days post op
nbw1220 replied to funky's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
Had my revision on March 29th and it was a much longer surgery than we had anticipated .. took about 5 or 6 hrs but everything turned out okay.. I stayed an extra day in the hospital bc of how tired I was.. I could barely sip anything. Recovery at home went well. I did have A LOT of pain but that was probably due to the additional work they had to do and the length of surgery..I had more scarring and my sleeve was bigger than they thought..I am feeling great now..down 18lbs, no heartburn, Gerd or acid relux. It is slower this time around but I was also much bigger with my first surgery. Hello everyone! My pace is moving really fast. I had my consult on April 21st, had my EKG, lab work, gallbladder ultrasound, and psych evaluation all done by April 28th, got my letter of medical necessity on Monday the 3rd, and today will have my final appt, the nutrition evaluation. That's a span of exactly two weeks to the day! There's always a chance that the nutritionist requires another course with me, but my insurance doesn't (I have Cigna.) So, realistically, by the end of today, I could have my insurance claim submitted and will know the result within two weeks. Everything's been moving quite fast, and though I've researched WLS for a decade now, I have only been working towards it in earnest for the past two weeks. My psych recommended me for surgery and it really helps that my sister just had bypass on April 7th so I've seen her journey and her eating requirements. For those who have had surgery or are about to, what are some mental preparedness tips to be mindful of? I think it's safe to say that many people with weight issues have an odd relationship to food. Just last night, I felt sad knowing I won't be eating rice the way I do currently (as an entire meal, very typical for my culture.) What should I be ready for? Major surgery + major changes in such a short span is sort of making me nervous! TIA.

Considering Revision - 1 day post-op Band Removal
TatiBR82 posted a topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
Hello Everyone My name is Tati - 39 and seeking to get you all's input and feedback. Back in 2012 I made the decision to get Lap Band Surgery; let me say this though; it was for ALL the wrong reasons!!! I had been working out faithfully and lost 40lbs on my own until one day while riding my motorcycle I got cut off and hit ending up in the trauma unit. I lost mobility of my left arm (temporarily), couldn't work out and depression sat in and I gained it all back. So I needed an "easy fix" or so I thought, that turned out to be not so easy!!! After 9 1/2 years - Today; May 5, 2021 I am sitting here bandaged up, in pain from Band Removal and rethinking EVERYTHING! Now at 39y/o I sit at my heaviest weight in my life. I only managed to lose a total of 30lbs before complications began and I have since regained all that weight back, PLUS an additional 55lbs Now I have the ultimate decision to make; Leave it alone; or have Revision Surgery - and If I take that route; which one do I choose - VSG or RYGB. This time for the right reasons and beinh familiar with one journey; and most importantly, I KNOW it's NOT easy! May 19th, 2021 I have my follow-up for my band removal and make the decision of which surgery to go with. I initially got the Band to be "safe" because it is not permanent and less invasive. Some are saying to revise to VGS and others RYGB. I have been reading threads here and other stuff online and see that a lot of people have had GERD and other issues with the VGS and revising to RYGB. TIA -Tati -
Revision from sleeve to bypass 8 days post op

I had my revision on March 23 due to GERD. I have lost 18 lbs thus far and it definitely has been slow. How has everyone else doing? -
Had my bypass on the 8th of April only down 13 lb but that still seems like a lot to me I've had little to no pain and doing good. Sent from my SM-G930VL using BariatricPal mobile app

5 weeks post op: something doesn't feel quite right
PuraVida37 posted a topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Hi folks. I had a revision from band to sleeve on 3/26/21. I'm on stage 4 and had some ground up gyro meat for dinner last night that was a little dry, but I did OK with it. Today I feel "off". My head has a dull ache, I've had off and on dull ache in my stomach/chest, and when I took my swallow able multivitamin, the underside of my jaw hurt a little. What did I do? Is it just indigestion? Any ideas before I call my doc? Anyway, in the meantime I went back to just shakes to let my stomach calm down a bit. Thanks in advance for answering. My bypass is scheduled for June 12th! Good luck 😃🤞

Lapband, VSG, Now RNY Bypass the sequel
MSWDiet replied to Sincerely.blj's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
I haven't had a revision but I had no post op pain after RNY. Pain was my only concern but I did not need the hospital's pain med drip or Rx at home. Fingers crossed, you will have little or no pain too. I wish you well. This time around you will reach your most healthy weight. MSW -
I had the similar worries because I need a cocktail of daily meds including psych drugs. Over a decade later I'm proof that this can be done successfully immediately post bypass surgery and long term. My surgeon believed bypass was necessary although I sought him out for his experience with the sleeve. Twelve hours post op a nurse sat with me and showed me how to take 21 tablets & capsules, not including supplements. I did then and still do this 7 times daily. Among my meds are a few commonly used psych drugs. Both short and long acting drugs were in the mix from the start. My doctor did not allow me to crush pills because medical conditions unrelated to obesity required meds that could not be crushed or broken. He insisted I learn to continue my regular medications beginning on the day of surgery. None were changed to crushable forms. It took 20 minutes. I went home the day after surgery and swallowed my 3 dozen meds and supplements including psych drugs 7 times a day. Zero complications since 09'. Every single medication worked as it did before surgery. Best wishes for your success! MSW

Hi there! I am 5 days post op gastric bypass. On day 4 post op, I started to experience burping after EVERY SIP of shake and water. Is this just my stomach adapting to its new life? Is this something that is temporary? Thanks!!

Gastric Sleeve and Reflux
lizonaplane replied to Lori E's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I wanted bypass because I have GERD, but the surgeon is worried I won't be able to absorb meds I have to take after surgery for other conditions I have that surgery won't solve, so he and my doctor both recommend sleeve. The surgeon is also not convinced I have GERD, but I'm not sure why. I'm just hoping the GERD is no worse after surgery. (I'm on omeprazole now since having gastritis last year and I don't have any symptoms. I don't care if I have to stay on it). -
Any Taller People Here with Higher Goal Weights?
Soon2bFit21 posted a topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
So just a little history: I am 42, , 5’11 and spent a good 10 years of life competing in women’s bodybuilding and also did trail running and half marathons before injuries, peri menopause, and a car accident caused me to gain a lot of weight over a few years. My surgeon is insisting that my goal weight be 150-155 lbs. I have not weighed this even when I was bodybuilding and completely shredded with a full 6 pack. He even tried to get me to switch from VSG to bypass because he felt it would help me lose more weight. I started out at 339 pre surgery and am down to 308 at 4 weeks post. There is no way that I feel I could ever weigh 150lbs as I would be skin and bones! Has anyone had a higher goal weight being taller or having more muscle mass than an average person? Did your muscle mass help or hinder your progress with weight loss? I have my long term goal weight in my head as 199lbs and I’m being told that I would still be obese at this and it isn’t a good goal for me to have. -
Need for tasty foods but am I moving too quickly?
PuraVida37 replied to Pilot my best self's topic in Post-op Diets and Questions
EDITED: I didn't see that you are bypass. I'm sleeve. May be different. Orginal response: You are 2 weeks ahead of me, and in one week I can try "regular" (healthy) food, so I think you're doing ok. But your doc is the real expert. -

I had RNY gastric bypass in 2004. I have gained weight back unfortunately and a revision would be to revise the surgery I had in 2004 to help me lose weight again. They go in their resize your pouch...etc. They say revisions are not as drastic with weight loss as the original surgery but I don’t know that for sure. Some people need revisions for medical reasons. I am hoping with mine to have a 2nd and final chance to get it right. -

What is revision surgery -
I also struggled with sleeve vs bypass. The best thing you can do for yourself is research the reasons you doctor discussed with you. Then research any other pros and cons from a strictly medical perspective. I suggest you ignore opinions and preferences of other patients until after you've evaluated the objective medical facts. Patients may have strong feelings about certain procedures. I've seen "surgery wars" on many message boards. The surgeon I selected because of his sleeve experience recommended I have a bypass be it roux-en-y or duodenal switch. Like you, I believed the sleeve would be less complicated over time. However, after research I could not deny the reasoning behind this recommendation was sound. With my underlying medical conditions the sleeve would most likely have required a revision within ten years. I only wanted to do this once. Two days before surgery I agreed to a roux-en-y gastric bypass. I should have agreed to the more drastic duodenal switch. Despite knowing the surgeon was on point, I could not bring myself to go there. NO Regrets! I'm glad I studied all angles even though I went middle of the road instead of with what MAY have been best. My decision suits my comfort level. That was in 2009. Today I still struggle with ups and downs but overall I'm maintaining. Back then Gap & Old Navy had nothing for me. Now I float between the vanity sized 0/2/4 made for us amplely proprtioned American women . No revision needed but I will always struggle. Best wishes for every you decide. [emoji106] MSW

Need for tasty foods but am I moving too quickly?
Pilot my best self posted a topic in Post-op Diets and Questions
I have added some foods this week that filled some cravings - cauliflower pizza, cauliflower chips and finally gave in to my daughters pleas for Korean takeout. It’s the first time I have had take out or spicy food since my bypass 5 weeks ago. I had Daenjang stew which has spicy Korean bean paste and jalapeño broth and tofu. So tasty but I am worried it may be harmful to my stomach- I ate a cup and felt fine. Had another cup later. Still fine. Stomach wise I’m feeling fine with these additions but worry I’m moving too quickly to my favorite (nutritionally acceptable) foods. I worry too that denser foods will slow my weight loss but frankly I’m so tired of the protein shakes and chicken and seafood salads that I’m been having these past 4 weeks. -
The longest plateau ever
perfektlynrml replied to perfektlynrml's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
I think you’re right. It is harder the closer you get to the goal. I readjusted my goal for now to make it easier to achieve. I originally wanted to get down to about 127 lbs but I revised my goal weight twice. First I made it 150 but now I adjusted it to 175. As I reach the smaller goals I will strive for the next point of achievement. -
My story started in 2018 after becoming my father's legal Guardian due to him having a stroke followed by a heart attack. That woke me up, and I began to take my morbid obesity and skeletal issue more seriously. But in reality, I should have said yes the first time. My VA doctor suggested Gastric Bypass Surgery in 2013 while discussing my morbid obesity, skeletal issue, and being borderline diabetic. Now let's jump to September 2020 While visiting my PC VA doctor, I decided to get enrolled in the Bariatric program. 26Apr2021, I finished my last phase 1 checklist step, and on 29Apr2021, I received My Bariatric Bypass Surgery Date of 14 June 2021. During this time, my starting weight was 306lbs; to date, my weight is 289lbs. What did I do? Drank more water half bodyweight in OZ Cut out All Fast foods for Lunch Cut out all processed foods Cut as many GMO's as possible Cut soda's Switched to a 75/25% Plant-Based Diet (Mosaic Foods Subscription for all Lunches) Substitute more Alkaline foods in my diet Switched to Non-Dairy Milk's (Allergic to Cow Milk) Plant-Based Shakes for Breakfast (Truvani & Garden of Life Raw Organic Fit Protein High Protein for Weight Loss) I did a lot of research on here and other places. Thank all of you for your knowledge and support.
