March 23 buddies yet?
GeorgieLynn replied to ceri84's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
My bag is packed, ready to go. Check In at the hospital at 5:30 tomorrow morning. It is hard to believe that I have come this far already and the day is finally here. Although I know this journey has only just begun I have to celebrate the small successes along the way of making the decision to make a change, seeking help, making a true commitment, sticking to the plan, working the program, working on me and recommitting each and every day to keep loving me and working to improve me. We all can do this! Here's to determination! Here's to LIVING! HERE'S TO US! If it is not too difficult or stressful for you, I say go and enjoy yourself but drink your protein prior and enjoy sipping on your teas, broths, etc while they eat and you all socialize. I am on day 10 of 14 and took my son to dinner for his birthday last week with family and did exactly that and was so glad that I went and enjoyed myself. It didn't bother me at all nor anyone else as they understood (many of whom I didn't feel the need to explain the full situation but simply if asked why I wasn't eating I explained I had an upcoming medical procedure and was on a very limited diet. No questions asked. Enjoy yourself! You can't stop living! This is only the beginning of life-long changes when we will not be able to eat as others do. Good luck and be strong. This is your life, live it! ❣️ -
Length of liquid diet Post-op
Jeanniebug replied to Bandedbut's topic in Post-op Diets and Questions
I was on clear liquids until I had a bowel movement (which took a few days). And then I was on 2 weeks of full liquids. So, my liquid stage was more than 2 weeks. Then I had 2 weeks of pureed, 2 weeks of soft, then on to solid. So, I was 6 weeks + before eating regular food. -
Length of liquid diet Post-op
hills&valleys replied to Bandedbut's topic in Post-op Diets and Questions
My post-op schedule is one week clear liquids, followed by two weeks full liquid, next one week pureed, finally a week of soft foods. So, a four week progression before solid foods. I think the longer period gives our stomachs more time to heal and establishes a habit of consuming more liquid in our daily diet going forward. Plus the longer you abstain from sugar and carbs, the less you crave them making sticking to a diet easier. -
My Dr. requires 4 weeks of full liquid diet after the sleeve surgery. This doesn't count any pre-op time. Then a week (or 2!) of pureed, followed by another 1-2 weeks of soft. I know every surgeon is different, but everywhere else I read 2 weeks of full liquid. I am guessing it is because I was self pay (US), and don't have a follow up until 4 weeks after, and even then it's only by phone, so this reduces the chances of complications? I am NOT looking for permission to do something other than what my surgeon recommends (or admonitions to stick with his guidance!) I will be discussing with the nutritionist. But I'm curious how many others are supposed to stay on liquids longer than 2 weeks? Were you given clearance AT an in person follow up? When was that? What is the follow up care of Insurance patients vs Self Pay, whether that is US or Mexico. I'm a 2 hour drive from my surgery center, and was told all follow-ups would be virtual.

Sleeve Surgery Date is 22 March
hills&valleys replied to SymphonyOfDreams's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Good luck and congratulations on taking steps to improve your health and quality of life. I am less that one week post-op (3/3/23) from VSG. I feel great. I have had no nausea and the only pain I have experienced is similar to a muscle soreness as if I had been doing abdominal exercises. You got this! **my saving grace during the pre-op diet was kosher pickles** -
Sleeve surgery is April 12, 2023, Input please!

I don't think the inability to exercise is going to significantly affect your ability to lose weight. Yes, it does help - but weight loss is about 90% due to eating less and 10% exercise. I know of several people who rarely if ever exercised and they still lost a lot of weight with the surgery. secondly, I've had three surgeries since I turned 60 (although my RNY I had in my late 50s), and I was fine - but then, I don't have any major health issues, so that might make a difference. Your doctors can probably tell you if it's safe to have additional surgeries or not. as far as losing weight and keeping it off on your own, only about 5% of people are able to do that. Unfortunately, I was not one of the 5%. I lost and then gained back all the weight I'd lost about a billion times - again and again and again - decade after decade after decade. The only thing that worked for me was having weight loss surgery. I can't speak for you, of course, but that's been my experience. -
Sleeve surgery is April 12, 2023, Input please!
CountryGardens posted a topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
My sleeve surgery is scheduled for April 12, 2023. I am 5’6, 400 pounds., 60 years old. My mother and grandmother were both obese. At 16 I was 116 pounds, with undiagnosed PCOS. I had uterine cancer at 39, and had a hysterectomy. No hormone replacement as they felt it was a hormone based cancer. At 55 had a swollen thyroid removed. Each time, my weight increased. Three years ago, I had a spinal injury, which led to back fusion surgery, which caused nerve damage, and a right dropfoot. I have to use a rolling walker or cane to walk, and my back surgeon says I can’t lift more than ten pounds. I know I need this sleeve surgery, and I want to live and get healthy. But I am still nervous about doing this to my body. My surgeon says sleeve now, perhaps a revision to bypass after I have lost weight if necessary. I have five hernias which I had surgery to repair, which is why I believe he wants the sleeve first. I wonder if the potential of two surgeries is too much at my age, or just a bypass and be done with it. And I am worried about my inability to walk and exercise due to my disability. In my head I think, maybe if I just cut back on food, drink two or three protein drinks a day I will lose weight without surgery. After all, that seems to be what they want us to DO AFTER surgery! Any advice or sharing your journey would be so appreciated! Thank you! -
Three surgeries at once is really big, but you will make it through this. Each day will get better and better. Tried to take slow sips of water every 15 minutes to stay hydrated and try to stay positive 😊 Be Encouraged!

I am am self-pay, but going locally to JourneyLite. I was so close to pulling the trigger on Mexico, but I must admit that even though this is more expensive, I do not have to deal with travel, and am pretty close to the hospital. JourneyLite was definitely cheaper than the local hospitals' costs around here! By about 5k to 10k! Even though I likely do not need it, BlissCARE is available at JourneyLite. Since my insurance doesn't cover ANY weight loss surgeries or drugs, I need the peace of mind that comes with having complications insurance. My pre-op diet consists of 1 week of foods I had to buy from JourneyLite--at first I was outraged I had to buy their foods. But in the end, you know what? It is really nice to just eat their foods and not worry about anything at all. It was 1 week because my BMI was lower, if BMI was higher it would have been 2 weeks. I did start my own low calorie diet before I start the official pre-op diet. Around 1200 calories. Just to get my mind and stomach ready for the < 1000 calorie very low carb pre-op diet. I am also now weening myself off of coffee. I am *super* nervous! Surgery day will be here before I know it, and life will change for the better.

4 weeks out and scale isn't budging
Arabesque replied to lexylynn92's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Yep stall. It may last 1-3 weeks & you’ll likely experience them again. Think of them as your body taking a break in reaction to all the stress it’s been under (the equivalent of how we may want to close the door & pulling the covers over our head when stressed). It will pass. Stick to your plan, don’t stress your body further by making more changes & it will pass when your body is ready. Oh, and stay off the scales for a few days - it will only frustrate you more. -

Whenever we lose a lot of weight in a short period of time, a substantial amount of the weight loss is actually water weight not fat. To lose 21 pounds of fat in two weeks, you would have to burn at least 5,500 calories in addition to what you consumed that day. A stall is nothing more than our bodies rehydrating to normal levels. As you are regaining depleted water weight, you are actually losing fat pounds even though the scales are not moving. Don't get discouraged. Once your composition levels normalize, the scales will start registering the fat loss again. -
I just had my surgery Friday, and honestly I’m still working on getting in my fluids, and barely am hitting 40oz still… protein is no where near where it needs to be, but i can only focus on one goal at a time right now. Once I can hit fluid goal, i will worry about proteins. I couldn’t even keep my antibiotics down the first three days, so i will pick my battles at this point.

I had my surgery on Friday- and took a 4 hour flight home on sunday. I took off Monday and returned to work today. I am in a very relaxed hybrid work situation with minimal oversight— and make my own schedule. I dont know that id want to be sitting in work meeting/traveling two weeks out, but working in my environment is fine. I did take off two weeks for laproscopic hysterectomy in November 2022, and just dont see the need for that kind of time off right now. I will say- if i was in a more demanding situation i would make a different decision, because drinking fluids right now is a serious full time job and you HAVE to focus on that for your health.

I echo those above. I have eaten virtually no pasta or potatoes in the last 15 months. I can just about tolerate bread, so have been able to eat it in situations where there isn't anything more suitable, but it lies in my stomach like a lump of lead afterwards. Rice is the same - I can have two or three small pieces of sushi and then my stomach says 'no more'. It's really weird but helpful weird, IYKWIM!

4 weeks out and scale isn't budging
catwoman7 replied to lexylynn92's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
yep. It's the infamous "three week stall". Most of us experience it. Just stick to your food plan and stay off the scale for a few days. It'll eventually break and you'll be on your way again. Stalls usually last 1-3 weeks. -

My 3-week stall happened at 2 weeks and lasted for almost a month. Hang in there. And I agree, eating less than 500 calories PLUS exercising sounds like a great way to make your body hang onto every calorie it can get. -
Make sure you stick to your plan religiously, stay away from the scale for a while, and exercise as normal. Make sure you're getting enough water and protein. The stall will eventually break. It's all part of the process.

Unsuccessful revision from sleeve to bypass due to hernia mesh
prettypenny099 replied to LeighlonLove's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
Hi LeighlonLove, I am less than 2 weeks away from getting a sleeve to bypass revision due to severe GERD. However, I had a paraesophageal hernia repair done in 2018 and my new surgeon just saw the surgical notes. Apparently, my first surgeon who did the hernia repair used lots of mesh and also did a Nissan fundoplication which is not usually done with a sleeve. I now have a hiatal hernia very close to that same location and she is concerned that she won't be able to fix it because it's in a tight location (GI junction) and there is very little tissue to work with. She said a mesh repair is like using super glue so she doesn't want to to try and remove it. Her fear is leaks which would be a big problem. She has agreed to do the revision to bypass with the hope that it will take care of some of this awful GERD but not all, unfortunately. Did you and your surgeon come up with a plan B? If so, I'd love to know what was decided. Best of luck with your next step! Penny -
4 weeks out and scale isn't budging
Fred in Pa replied to lexylynn92's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
There is a three week stall that everyone talks about. I’ve thought about this and another fact that the body “initially” heals in 3-4 weeks. It makes sense to me that the 3-4 week time is when the body is slowing the heal and trying to shift back to maintaining the rest of the body. Then, coming from a calorie deficit, it tries to add weight back on. I’d also say 500cals is too low, your body may be sensing starvation. Did you team recommend this low of a calorie count? -
Business Travel after ESG
mcipanda replied to Mrs Roz's topic in Endoscopic Sleeve Gastroplasty Forum
I'm similar to you (surgery scheduled for 3/13) and around the same weight, though my BMI is higher because I'm 5'3". As a person who has worked in tech and traveled for many years, I do wonder if you're pushing it a little bit. When I had a hysterectomy (after two c-sections), I took 4 days off and went back to work the following week from home. I was so committed to my job that I didn't even consider the fact that I could have taken 6 weeks off through short term disability. I truly thought it would be easy. I mean, after each c-section, I was up taking care of the baby and my kids immediately. This laparoscopic hysterectomy seemed like a drop in the bucket, but I was wrong. My body and mind tired really fast. I felt like I constantly needed to take a nap. The work I produced was subpar and I wasn't able to contribute to meetings or brainstorming sessions properly. With this VSG surgery, I know I'll need to drink only liquids for the first 10 days... that's going to seriously zap my mental energy, all while trying to heal internally. Apart from the physical aspect, there's the emotional one to consider. This is a whole new way of life that I am committed to giving myself time to adjust to. If I just get right back up and go to work, I will be distracting myself from what I need to deal with today vs. tomorrow. These are just my thoughts of course. Only you can know yourself best. Plus, your work situation might be very different from mine. Just hope these thoughts can help give you a different perspective. Good luck with your upcoming surgery!! Wishing you a very fast, easy recovery! -
When will I see results?

First, I bet what your Dad said really hurt. I'm sorry he said that to you. I'm not sure what people are thinking when they hear the words "weight loss surgery." Sometimes I get the feeling they assume someone snapped their fingers over your body and now the excess weight is just going to melt off of you. If that were true, maybe..MAYBE you could see a difference in 3 weeks. But this isn't a magic bullet and you're not going to melt away. Your body has figured out how to store and hold that fat for many years. It's not going to let go so easily. I know this going into surgery (mine is scheduled for 3/13), but I'm sure someone will need to remind me when I'm a few weeks - and many months - in. I'm so happy you can feel the difference yourself, because you're the only one who matters when it comes to this. Take care and good luck on your journey! -
My first two weeks I dropped a lot of weight about 21 lbs but I am on the fourth week and have been stuck at about 203. I was at 201 at the end of the first two weeks then I went up two lbs. I am getting frustrated because I am exercising, hitting my protein goals/liquid goals and I am not getting above 500 calories a day. I just feel like crying (I have been crying) and feel like maybe having PCOS that this weight is still not gonna come off even with this surgery. It sucks to not be able eat most things and go through this to just be stuck like this. Even if I could just get to 199 within a week I would be happy but I see the scale is going up little by little. Everyone keeps saying trust the process but I just can't right now. November 2022 Surgery Buddies
NP_WIP replied to Crystal Leifheit's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Hello!! I finally got to starting my exercise routine and boy does everything hurt 😂 I'm back on track with my fluids and protein. I'm sort of meal prepping since I'm an accountant and have tax deadlines this week and want to make sure I do not skip meals. I had a doctor's appointment yesterday with my primary, my BP is down a lot, she still doesn't want to remove the pills but agreed that I can take half if my BP is above a certain number in the afternoon, and in 3 months we can see about taking it a couple times a week until I reach goal to remove, she will feel comfortable if I was in the 150s, a little less than goal but maybe it is possible who knows. Hope everyone is doing well and everyday closer to your goal! -

Everyone loses weight differently, for me it is first in my face/neck and waist, so it is easier for people to tell. I was told I was losing weight 1 week post op, and I had lost about 15lbs at that point, but I also retain a lot of water. I also believe that those that see you more often will take longer to tell you about your weight loss. I'm 3.5 months post op and last week my husband asked me if I'm losing weight lol. Just hang in there, keep doing what you're doing, and things will move in the right direction. -

I'm a little over 3 months out and I've lost 47lbs from my heaviest (32lbs from surgery date). People just started noticing just in the past few days. My husband of course noticed within weeks after the surgery even though my clothes still hid most of my weight loss. I tried to pay attention to all the non scale victories, like my ankles weren't swollen anymore, my shoes and slippers fit better, and my rings could fit my fingers in the first few weeks. I also was happier that my blood pressure was down and that my sleep apnea has gotten better and that happened almost immediately after surgery.
